Had a very nice lunch at Kimbop. I tried the beef bulgogi bento box and my wife had a couple of sushi rolls. We thought the sushi was pretty, and had good textures, but wasn't very flavorful. The bulgogi was less pretty, but tasty, with rice and glass noodles and a standard salad. The miso soup was good. The place is small, but there are a half dozen tables, and everything is decorated and there is music playing. It seemed cozy and cheerful. The server was very helpful and quick to respond to questions or requests. We will have to come back to try the fried chicken and the ramen and see what we like best. read more

I've ordered takeout from Kimbop in the past, but this was my first time dining in. The place is a little bigger than I expected! We started with crab Rangoon, which we both enjoyed. For our entrees, we both ordered sushi. I wish I could remember the name of the roll I ordered, but it disappeared from my mind the moment my friend's food came. I ordered one sushi roll, which arrived in 10 pieces on a regular plate. Whatever it was, it was fine. Meanwhile, my friend ordered 2 crunch rolls, which arrived on a massive wooden platter. Twenty pieces in all, but substantially more food than you'd expect from two rolls. And, it was really, really good! We ended up sharing both of our entrees, and had an entire crunch roll leftover to bring home. A few weeks later, I'm still thinking about that spicy crunch. The menu was plentiful with a lot of fusion options between sushi and Korea dishes. I got the rice bokki and bk roll to share with my mom. The prices were a little higher than other places, but the food tasted pretty good and it was filling. The rice bokki is sweet and spicy with an egg, fish cakes, and rice cakes. The bk roll was a monster, filled with shrimp tempura, beef bulgogi and spicy pork. If you don't finish the piece in one bite, then it's falling apart. Service was friendly but really slow. They didn't have too many people working so there would be no one up front sometimes because they're fulfilling take out orders. I had to go up and ask for a to-go container and our bill. The restaurant feels a bit cramped but there's lots of tables in a row for parties of 4 or less. There's a lot of decorations that makes the restaurant a bit cluttered. And they have kpop videos playing in the background which is fun. It's a good place to get quick, take out Korean food. 06/15/24 - Today we went back to take advantage of our Groupon purchase. We bought $30 worth of food for $15. This time we both ordered poke bowls. I ordered the salmon poke bowl & my wife ordered the tuna poke bowls. They were both delicious Both were served over a bed of rice w/masago (fish roe), shredded crab meat, lettuce, roasted garlic, diced cucumbers, diced green peppers & cilantro. Of course my wife's had tuna & mine had salmon. We mixed it up so all the ingredients could be blended & eaten (like halo halo). I added hot sauce to mine. Awesome meal very filling and nutritious. For me, this restaurant is a mixed bag with some elements to like and some not to like as much. Outside of the food, the restaurant is somewhat small but just large enough to accommodate some tables for dine in. Given the size of the restaurant, the menu variety is actually pretty good with lots of options ranging from fried chicken to poke bowls to bibimbap to kimbop and other Korean favorites. Service is friendly and the decor is appropriate for the restaurant. For me, the food is not the best and not the worst. Portion sizes skew a little on the smaller side, though prices are not much different from competitors nearby. This also doesn't come with ban-chan that you'd get from many other Korean restaurants nearby with your meal. The ingredients do seem to be pretty good, but not really any different from the large number of competitors nearby on Milwaukee Ave. With that said, the flavor of the food was fine -- like the salmon poke bowl was done fairly good, though fish pieces could've been a bit bigger. The bulgogi was tender and lightly sweet, but not the best version of this that I've had. Presentation overall was pretty good. Overall, a solid performer in the category. Good for a reasonably priced hot meal if you'd doing something nearby in the area like visiting the Wheeling Town Center. read more

Decided to grab some dinner before a movie at the Cinergy movie theater in wheeling. Gives a small local Korean pocha vibe. Had two tuna kimbops, spicy dduk bokki, crab rangoons, and fried chicken rice bowl. Their fried chicken is legit, and kimbops were solid. They are generous with the ingredients in the kimbops too. I've had better bokki and crab rangoons though. They have more food options in the online/kiosk menu compared to their paper menu. Definitely a spot I would try again soon. My roll was packed with fresh ingredients, juicy and plentiful beef bulgogi, and rolled tightly together. I can make a meal just out of this alone. I also ordered the bibimbop bowl with bulgogi and it's another winner! Just the right amount of rice, fresh vegetables, plenty of meat, and topped with a sunny side egg (they ask how you want your egg prepared)! It was one delectable bite after another! Now... as I'm craving Korean food, specifically kimbop rolls and bibimbop, I couldn't resist ordering their wings! Korean style wings are a food group on its own! Don't ever compare it to BWW or any of those wing places. Korean wings are crispy, juicy, tender, crispy, covered in sauce and yet still sooooooo crispy crunchy! I've been here several times and must say that the food is extremely hit or miss. It's mainly a takeout place though there are tables available for dine in. Our experiences have been strictly take out only. I'm all for supporting small businesses but I hope Kimbop will improve with constructive criticism. Let's start positive with the good. Items I would get again on the menu are definitely the Kimbop (I've enjoyed all 4 variations I've tried), the yakisoba, and the rice cake skewers (these are addicting). Our most recent trip was extremely disappointing. Fried rice was sad, had a few pieces of carrots, no scrambled eggs, and had zero flavor. Couldn't even taste the soy sauce. Bibimpop was more of a joke - a bed of rice with stir fried cabbage/mushroom on top. Again zero flavors. Idk how they can get these basic dishes so wrong Food aside, I would say their service needs the most help. The food is NEVER ready when we come (we usually order on phone 15-30 min before arriving). I see other delivery drivers also having to wait for their orders. I feel that their food is also not consistent in quality; sometime sesame seeds are sprinkled other times not; Sometimes the dish comes with a fried egg other times not. They also seem to have lots of trouble with their register -- there has been issues with payment each time we come. They also failed to refund to us an item and they forgot to include in the order; we didn't find out until we got home, spoke to someone on the phone who said well get a refund and never did. When we came back for a second visit, the manager had to resolve the issue for us. I may come back just for their Kimbop or the rice cake skewer appetizers if I choose to ignore the bad services. I had a surprisingly delightful meal (take home meal) at Kimbop. We tried a bunch of different items on the menu. I was surprised at how big the portions were. The portions were bigger than what I imagined from looking at yelp pictures. Everything we tried was really good and there was not one thing I wouldn't get again. - Salmon Poke Bowl: This was as good (maybe even better) than some of the poke bowls that I've had at other places that specialize in poke. Maybe slightly pricier, but it included crab meat, seaweed salad, avocado, and lots of tobiko (fish egg), all of which usually cost an extra $1 each at other poke places I've been to. The salmon pieces were large, the taste was great. - Seafood pancake: This was larger than I expected. This was really good with lots of seafood in it. And a nice sauce (spicy, but good) that came with it. - Chicken katsu: Chicken katsu was good and exactly what I expected. Sauce that came with it was perfect as well. - Pork cutlet Kim bop: The kimbop was big and better than I expected. I'd get this again! Seating is minimal here. It was nice and crunchy! -Salmon in maki was fresh but very chewy (scraps that should not have been served in large pieces) -Tuna on top of maki was not fresh tasting -Large maki was not rolled properly/tight (every piece fell apart, difficult to eat, still very tasty) What needs to be done is to improve fish quality a bit and make sure the large maki is properly rolled. It is super possible that I ordered too close to closing time, and that is why the fish quality was not great, but everything else was super fresh. I will certainly try this place again. I placed an online order and it was ready within ~40 minutes on a weekday evening. Prices are still reasonable but some menu items seem to have increased since some previous menus were posted. Hubby and I shared LA kalbi, cheese ddukboki, rainbow roll, and caterpillar roll. The rainbow roll started to fall apart as I was picking it up and was filled entirely with crab mix and didn't have any cucumber or avocado on top. However, it did have plenty of avocado on top and was skimping on the fish. Both rolls did not taste fresh and I would probably avoid sushi altogether from Kimbop. The LA kalbi was decent but only came with two strips of meat (it was cut up but I counted the number of bones). The cheese ddukboki was also okay but had a minimal amount of cheese. It wasn't too spicy either. Hubby commented that he could tolerate the spice level and he is weak sauce when it comes to spicy food. I was originally excited after seeing all the positive Yelp reviews but was left disappointed. I tried this restaurant out for my bday and it was alright. I ordered the spicy tuna kimbap and my friend ordered the spicy chicken plate. The pieces were huge and I liked the spicy tuna kimbap, but I do think the texture was kind of weird to me on the tuna. Maybe I expected it to be more like sushi. I also wish it were more spicy too. That would've made it more interesting! I would probably rate it a 7/10 on taste, size, and price. The spicy chicken plate was okay. It tasted kind of like a Chinese food court dish. The flavor of the chicken was more vinegar-y and my friend didn't enjoy it as much because of that. For the taste and amount of chicken, I don't think it was really worth the price, especially if you can get similar dishes for $9 at panda express or food court restaurants. The employees there were really friendly and they let us sit outside even though we ordered for take out. Overall, my experience was just okay. I think my rating is more of a 3.5/5, but because of the employees, I'll give this place a 4. I'm not normally this guy, as I respect how difficult it is to get orders out to people. However, I felt this situation warrants a review. I ordered my food around 11:30, and it advised me online that I would get my order at 12:23 PM. Normally, when I place the order, I get a text advising the order is in, and then another text when the driver is on their way. I did not receive these, nor my food. So I called the associate on the phone, and she advised me that 3 people came in looking for my order, and she gave it to a guy. She finally confessed that the guy never was checked, and the other two people actually showed my order on their phone. The guy wasn't verified, and thus he stole my food. Once she realized she did not verify the guy, she could've called me or just made the meal again. But nothing happened until I called the store. Once I did call, the remedy the manager came up with was to refund my original order and have me place another order online. That is completely unacceptable. Refund me so I can just pay for another order? I have done business for quite a while here, but I just can't again after this.
