And the small paint samples were less expensive than at another Benjamin Moore location ( and much smaller and cheaper than what was available at Sherwin Williams!). Gabe helped me with color matching a cabinet paint given a sample. He's one of the best color matching experts in the Bay Area. Please watch out before you buy from this store. I had an incredibly disappointing experience at Benjamin Moore South bay Paints.my client has already purchased the paint over the phone and I ask one of the team member to go pick it up. All my team member were company T shirts with logo on it and he was there to pick up the purchased paint but instead they sale another time the paint before we leave the shop we figure out the problem and call them for refund and they refused and blaming him that he didn't say it was a pick up order.the problem get worse When I asked to speak to the manager, I expected some sort of resolution, but it only got worse. The manager was just as rude and completely uninterested in addressing my concerns. They offered no assistance or apologies, making it clear they didn't care about their customers. I won't be returning and I highly advise others to avoid this place as well. We ended up paying about $800 for 5 gallons of paint. read more

Unfortunately, when I returned to pick up the stain match, I got the cold shoulder from him, and a smart ass response. I love this place. They carry a great selection of Benjamin Moore paints, including the Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware collections. The guys there are ENDLESSLY patient, and I do mean endlessly...not only do I have some pretty ridiculous questions but I have stood behind ladies who take like an hour to go through paint samples WHILE standing at the counter. Note to paint choosing peeps, they have a cush mahogany table in the front of the shop where you can park your booty down and be way more comfy than in line holding other people up. Big perk for the new Aura line which is low VOC (paint fumes) and also Natura which is like nil VOC...also their Aura line has these huge paint sample sheets that are something like 18x18 for EVERY color they offer, and they are like $2 bucks. DEFINITELY worth it when you are trying to see what a color looks like on the wall cuz we all know that the little 1x2 swatch is not doing anything but making your imagination work overtime. Great selection of little 2 oz paint samples as well... and this place is fast and easily friendly. You can stop in at 3:50 on a Saturday when they close at 4 and they will not blink an eye as you rattle off $175 worth of paint order that you need right there. Negatives...a little pricey and they always seem to recommend way more paint than I need (as in a whole quart extra), but I love shopping local so in this case it's worth it. read more

This is paint you have to use if you love to paint.. You better love to paint because if you use it you will have to paint a lot of it. Its like painting with colored water, my daughters bedroom took 4 coats to cover. Big mistake on our part. I have gone twice to choose some paint & there is a guy who claims he had been working for paint for 16 yrs. well he was no help what's so ever. He is rude too. Every time I ask him for help he got technical on me. If your such an expert then u should b able to say, hay this might go good with the color u chose. This place ROCKS!! The staff here is knowledgeable, helpful, patient (very with me!) and they don't try to push stuff that you don't need! If you're looking to use Benjamin Moore paints, which I personally feel are the best interior color choices and quality, this is the place to shop! Benjamin Moore paint is not cheap, no matter where you buy it. If you have kids, use the Aura line because you can actually wash your walls once they're painted, the paint is that good! But if you're looking to save money on material costs...go buy Home Depot paint...but good luck with that! These guys know their stuff and are super helpful. They took time to listen to what I wanted, helped me choose the colors and didn't rush me in the least. They carry Benjamin Moore paints so I did my purchase of a trim color for my baseboards. Nice shop with attentive staff, prices are a tad high $30 plus for a gallon. My old paint store was cheaper in Concord but; WE'RE NOT IN CONCORD ANYMORE" About 30 % higher cost here. Never the less a good spot and I'll work on the pricing. read more

I have no shame in admitting that I am dumb about painting except that I shouldn't kill my friends when they are nice enough to offer to help paint my new pad. After two weeks of internet research, I decided to go with Benjamin Moore paint because of the good reputation and their line of Natura paint (zero VOC). South Bay Paints is one of the four vendors in the San Jose area. When I strolled in the store, the guys looked suspicious/worried. It was pretty obvious I had no clue what was what. Sure enough, they had to endure my dumb questions. The second time I walked in, the guy said, "Oh yeah, I remember you." I replied, "Yes, not that many people are as clueless as I am," and he laughed. Rightly so. Three gallons of Natura primer and 6 gallons of Aura paint later, my bank account is screaming bloody murder. However, it's all worth it. The dingy white walls are now vibrantly yellow. My friends are alive and well albeit muscle soreness. My right forearm is ripped. I probably owe MFH half a dozen massages and will have to be on best behavior for months.(Not that many guys will spend 14 hours straight painting with you and then volunteer to come back for more slave labor. I know I've got a good deal). A gallon of paint is supposed to cover 350 sq. ft. surface area, although I think it's quite a conservative estimation. I have plenty of paint left over from the living room project. Take measurements before you go, so you don't end up looking like a dumbass like me. Natura is the zero VOC line. Aura is the low VOC line. Aura, I was told, is almost half primer and half paint thus it covers very, very well. If you have yellow on your mind like me, it is the most translucent color and you won't be able to use just one coat like the rest of the Benjamin Moore colors. It takes ten minutes or so to mix paint. You can call in ahead of time if you need to, esp. if you need Natura (They only have one mixer). Be prepared to spend hundreds (Aura was $56 per gallon). This is quality paint and meant to last a decade (unlike cheap paint which will last about 5 years). It takes less than 2 hours to dry in between coats, long enough of time to fix boo-boos and short enough to finish your work within a day if need be. The odor is very faint and doesn't irritate my over-sensitive nose at all. I'm happy to give a local store business and glad that I did. read more

(Gabe) After talking to him I was very happy with the recommendations he gave me. He brought out wood samples to see how the colors will match, also recommended a nice accent wall color that I would have never thought of. Everyone is friendly and helpful! Great paint place! Everyone was very helpful and they put up with some of my confusion when I was buying samples. The fellow that helped me strongly encouraged me to look at the paper swatches in the light at home because the store light is such a contrast. I didn't even think to do this and it saved me a lot of money on buying the samples. I would not hesitate to buy painter here again in the future. I'm not sure I would rate them down because you don't like BJ paints? Don't they sell other paints too? That's just one of the lines they carry but maybe I'm confused about that. I'm not sure how the prices compare but paint in general is a lot of money lol. I'd rather pay a little bit more and give what I am presuming to be a small business some, well, business. :) read more

Love, love, love this place! I'm going to sound like a shill but this place really impressed me. We are remodeling a house and painting the entire interior and exterior, so I needed a lot of paint. I was already a fan of Benjamin Moore paint, particularly their Affinity line. (I'm told the new Color Stories line is very cool, but besides a couple of colors for our kid's rooms, I haven't used them. They seem like great colors, but not as restrained and safe to decorate adult rooms with as the Affinity paints.) Everyone here was super friendly. But best of all, they have very knowledgeable people who are happy to help you work through a paint decision crisis. Our first choice of exterior paint color turned out to be a disaster. They helped me adjust the color twice until we found something we liked. As for the person who claimed the paint didn't cover well, I'm not sure what they were using. We painted our house with Aura paint for the walls and Regal for the ceiling and it covered very well. My contractor thought that one coat had covered sufficiently for several of the paint colors we had chosen. And I was in the house while they were painting and found that the paint had very little odor compared with other paints. The Benjamin Moore paints are quite a bit more expensive, but like I said, I love the Affinity line -- which other companies can't precisely recreate -- and I had their paint in my previous home and found that it held up really well to all the scrubbing I was forced to do because of my kids. First of all, I was very, very surprised to read the reviews on yelp?? My experience was far from good when dealing with the guys at Southbay Paint. Let me see if I can summerize my experience: I had picked a paint that was the perfect shade but maybe a hair too dark. I had already ordered the paint as it was but called to see if I could have them add 10 drops of white (suggest by color consultant that works with BM Paint). They said they would do it to only one of my 5 gallon containers so I could approve it. When asked what i was trying to acheive, I gave them the name of another color to show how light I wanted it but asked them only to add 10 drops of white to a 5 gallon and we would see where we were. At the end of the day, they completely changed my color to the other shade, which was clearly NOT what I asked them to do. And to top it off, they changed ALL 15 GALLONS! About $500 worth of paint! I think the drop in communication came when the person I spoke to on the phone passed the info onto another gentlemen and something was lost in translation. This is not the worst of it! After going to look at what should have been the shade I ordered w/ 5 drops of white, then realizing they completely changed all 15 gallons, the gentlemen at the front basically started to yell at me whilte there were other customers in the store. He preceeded to tell me what my request was although he was not on the phone when I made the request. I have to say, I have never been treated so unprofessionally in my life. I am in sales and sell printing, so I understand how subjective color can be. I know that I made myself clear when I called the store. If you are looking for a good deal on Benjamin Moore Paint, go to the Decor Paint in Los Gatos, previously The Avenue. They are MUCH more professional, extremely helpful and will match the price of South Bay Paints but you have to ask them to do that. Well worth the extra 5 mins than to deal with South Bay Paints. read more

I brought a paint sample to a well-known big chain hardware store to get some paint for touching up my apartment walls. The color they mixed was way, way off and I was totally bummed seeing it on my walls. I thought I'd try a place that actually specializes in paint, found South Bay Paints online and am so glad I did! At first (as they were busy) I was going to have to come back later when it was done, but when I explained I didn't live close by, the man who was helping me (I think he said his name was Yoel) (hope I got that right) said he liked a challenge and went to work matching it with paint samples and then tweaking it several times in the mixing machine based on visuals. It was a very subtle, creamy yellow color, but this guy NAILED IT!!! He matched it so perfectly that you can't even tell that I did any touch ups on my wall. I will absolutely go to this place again.
