I'm just now getting around to visiting Benji's: SHAME ON ME Calling Benji's a "Bakery" or a "Cafe" is doing them such a huge disservice. They are so much more. This place reminds of a spot in Honolulu that has been featured in 18 food shows and always pops up on IG....except we have them right here in our backyard. I get a Hawaii vibe mainly because the food is so eclectic and has a heavy Asian influence. It seems to meld various tastes and culinary ideas from varied cultures together and...it works. Here's what I mean: boba tea: Taiwan ube: Hawaii/Okinawa/Philippines matcha: Japan/China Bahn Mi: Vietnam bacon baked goods: 'Merica Croissants: Austria (seriously, I learned this today, look it up) Cruffin: Australia/'Merica The baked goods here are works of art. They are beautiful, bold, and enormous. If you want to be the star of your job, bring a handful of these in! The fact that they have multiple ube-flavored options also pokes at my Hawaii memories. The other major food items are their Bahn Mi sandwiches. The bread is delicious and perfectly crusty and crisp. The ingredients (I got the grilled pork) strike a perfect balance of sweet/savory/spicy/crunchy. They also have various fancy beverages. Many including tea, milk, and coffee. I got the matcha blast, it was most excellent. I love those little tapioca balls. Service was out of this world. They warned me it would take "a while" since there were lots of orders ahead of mine. This is by far my favourite boba place in any state. I've tried quite a lot of boba in search of somewhere better, currently impossible to find. Service is typically fast even with a line; I'm a regular customer always able to get my boba fix with no issue. Chicken Bahn Mi is my go to if I'm hungry but the Chowder is good as well and the bread is always perfection. Well, I must say, I'm completely satisfied and surprisingly blown away. I was very curious what this new spot was like. Once I saw the review Rory wrote, I had to try it. This is a very unique bakery. I love when you walk in and see someone preparing or decorating something for the case. When you first walk in there's a window into the kitchen. While you're standing in line trying to figure out what you want, you can watch the employees work in the kitchen. Delicately powdering cruffins, drizzling caramel on croissants, or topping one of these creations with something equally yummy. I initially just wanted to grab something to share with the kids, but after looking in that window for 5 minutes, I ended up getting everyone their own thing. Lol. My daughter is two and she got her own. The pastries are good sized. That's how much I didn't want to share. Lol. The atmosphere is really chill. They've got music going in the background. Top 40 or maybe just the radio. Not sure I was distracted by the pastries. They also have 4-5 different types of chowder. They have a strawberry lychee milk tea (that's not pictured) that was guzzled down in record times by the kiddos. It's not a huge spot, but there are places to sit and enjoy your goods. It's very clean and well kept. There were a lot of people there for a Sunday evening. This is a very trendy place so far. If you haven't, you need to get down here. The only reason they got 4 stars is because they're open until 9pm today, but it was only 5:45 when I went in and they were out of A LOT of stuff. Even the boba for my milk tea. I'd give them 3.5/5. We came here later. If you're looking at their baked goods, they will always be sold out so go in the morning. I can't attest to these. I ordered the classic milk tea boba... which was very underwhelming. They don't advertise customization options on sweetness but I believe it is available. Their banh mi was pretty tasty. Honestly, a good ratio of veggies to meat. You could taste the flavor of its meat. The spicy kicked in from the fresh jalapeños. The bread was nice and crunchy; one of the more better breads (not best) but high up there. Slap on some more pate and I would've given them a 4/5. Sandwich made great for passing through the airport. It was about an hour before closing time and I had snagged the very last bread, so I suggest going early!!! read more

Great place to go to after traveling and you want a snack. They sell a variety of different pastries such as chocolate monkeybread and marshmallow pastries. They also sell milk tea and different types of boba drinks. I tried the papaya and watermelon flavors with boba and almond milk. I love the watermelon flavor, but not so much the papaya flavor. They are $5.75 as a one size. They don't have the option of picking the sweetness level or ice amount, as the boba places back home always have. The slushee was still delicious. I don't know what kind of magic these folx are putting in their pastries and teas but it sure is WONDERFUL!! I stopped by on a whim at 6PM and there was a literal line out the door! When I finally made it inside the pastry counter was pretty much empty aside from a couple of cookies, and a few cronuts and those were flying off the shelves. I expected the low supply due to the time of day so it was NBD to me I just had my fingers crossed that they wouldn't sell out before I got one. I lucked out and there was some stuff left so I grabbed a matcha cookie and a cronut both were delicious. But TBH the highlight was the super yummy tea specialty I got! Some sort of pomegranate, butterfly tea with watermelon pearls....to the best of my recollection. Whatever it was I will 100% be back for that yummy tea concoction. Went in around 6pm on a Thursday to get my cruffin fix and they were sold out of all but one cruffin! Scooped that up with the last guava cheese croissant! These have got to be in the top 3 best croissants of all time. Perfectly crisp around the tips, flaky buttery crust, and soft and buttery inside. The ham and Swiss with jalapeño was delicious. The milk tea was pretty watered down and the peach tea was syrupy. Service was great - the woman who helped us was super patient and helpful in describing each item in the case even though a line started to build. Stopped in right before closing on a Friday night. The service was great from the moment I walked in the door. The lady behind the counter described what each of the unique pastries were in the case and the manager gave me 4 extra cruffins for free since it was closing time. I also purchased a Thai milk tea which was a bit sweeter than I like but good nonetheless. The cruffins are impressive. One word. CRUFFINS. I think it's somewhere between a croissant and a cupcake. I loved the two Cruffins I got!!! One was horchata and the other was fruity pebbles. The lamination and layers of the croissants with the cream filling was so light and it gave a happy middle ground of sweetness. It's hard to describe but it's like a donut croissant? I've been a huge Benji's fan since they opened but had the WORST service experience today. The young man working the counter was cashing out two young women who he chatted with for a long time and then he came out from behind the counter and joined them at their table to chat . This left myself , and then two others waiting in line. We waited for a long time , with the long getting longer while he continued to visit with his friends. Finally someone came out from the kitchen. As she was cashing me out I commented it was the first time I had not felt that I was a welcomed customer and she said it was really chaotic. I mentioned that it was really poor customer service for the man to leave the counter to go flirt/visit with friends when there was a line waiting, and she said "right." Benji's has great food, and I love supporting local but I doubt I will return after this experience. Edit: the owner called to apologize and recognized that they have a staffing problem. I appreciate him owning the problem, not making excuses and hopefully they can get the customer service issues addressed. read more

Who would have thought you could find such a place in Anchorage? It's one place where you can find sandwiches, pastries, soup, bubble tea and all kinds of other goodies. The cruffin (croissant muffin hybrid?) was such a fun treat. The ube one even came with a little topper which you can squeeze out to infuse your treat with extra filling. Perhaps because this is one of the few boba places in Anchorage, I gave it one more star but the prices are pretty steep and the quality was not great which is why two is the most I'll give it. I ordered the matcha blast with boba which was more than $5. I wanted it to be 25% sweet to only have the person making it tell me that they make their matcha mix ahead of time with condensed milk so it is what it is. Could not taste any matcha and it was really really sweet. The boba was clumped together so drinking it through the straw made it a mission. The boba was hard and somewhat chewy. Pass if you're in the mood for boba. read more

The new new update: Benji's has continued to innovate with amazing flavor combinations and visually fun pastries. This place is not your common bland bakery. There's a reason they sell out often and take time to restock midday. I've tried pretty much everything by now and love it. The owner is staying firm to the quality over quantity rules they made when opening and it shows. Even the boba is made in house and just like the pastries it is limited. Make sure to not wait until the last hour if you are craving your favorite treat because it may be all sold out. YES! We've been waiting for a quality boba place! Benji's has been open for 4 days and had people lining up outside waiting for the doors to open. They're working on perfecting their hours to have the right amount of ingredients which caused a delayed opening today but well worth the wait as they were polite while explaining the delay. We tried their grilled pork banh-mi and it's just like I remember from having them in Louisiana, atleast in regards to the bread. Nice French baguette soft on the inside and crusty and crunchy on the outside. The bread is baked fresh daily and the pork was flavorful. Only comment is to ask the customer if they do or don't want jalapeño so they're not surprised when they take a bite. Drinks we ordered were the taro coconut milk tea and tropic like it's hot. Both were delicious. My biggest complaint with most of the places in AK are the sweetness level of the drink and the texture of the boba, Benji's seems to have the right recipe. They also had an assortment of pastries that quickly sold out today. Thankfully we were one of the first in line so we were able to try the taro cruffin (croissant/muffin), taro coconut bun and lychee croissant. Not too sweet, beautiful buttery layers.
