Came here for lunch on our trip to Asheville and it was great! There is an interesting history to the restaurant which has it's roots with four African American women restauranteurs from the '60's, very cool. And their menu reflects their roots and the local growers. The staff are very knowledgeable and super sweet The pulled pork grits were outstanding. I highly suggest you try this dish. The pork was crispy, the grits creamy and the cheese and eggs and pickled onions were a great complement. The trout grits were also delicious but a little salty. We were staying at the attached Foundry hotel and opted to eat here three of the days of our time in Asheville. BoE is a solid choice for those in search of a hearty Southern breakfast. We had the cornmeal pancakes (very corny!), country ham (can't go wrong with it), smoked trout sandwich (the cheese is housemade), three-egg cheese omelet (don't worry - the sauce is not that spicy), yogurt and granola and two bowls of steel-cut oatmeal across the three meals we enjoyed here. The sandwiches are not necessary meant to be eaten by hand. I had the egg and country ham sandwich and the egg came out over easy. It was good, but hardly the kind of sandwich I could eat with my hands. Service was good (Thank you Ebonie() and got better after the weekend crowds went home. This is a vastly under-developed asset. It has a horrible menu. The pricing is totally ass-backward.....$21 for yogurt & granola; $15 for two sliders. If the place were worth a damn it would have a captive audience at the Foundry. Steps away from it's $50 breakfast for 2, is Pennyacup. $10 for much much better coffee and bagels for 2. In the right hands this could be very successful. Not with the current ownership/direction. read more

Carefully crafted flavors and friendly staff combine to create an incredible atmosphere! Great wine selections by the glass or bottle. Stumbled upon this place on a Tuesday night with no reservations. It was stellar. Trey, the server, was on point, very accommodating, and helpful with the drink orders. The food was well seasoned and local. I'm a gin girl, and none of there menu drinks featured gin. I asked for a Bees Knees and what Brian, the bar tender whipped up was on point. My enjoyed his Dark and Stormy. The local greens appetizer was perfect for two. The spiced wings came with an amazing dip. My Jerk Cauliflower was sooo good. The coconut rice and peas that came with it were savory and perfectly balanced the dish. My husband had the Joyce's farmhouse chicken and felt like his dish was balanced with the sorghum berries. Pretty nice dining environment but below average food quality. We ordered chicken and pork chop. Chicken was incredibly salty and pork chop was dry. Chucked down two glasses of water after a few bites of their food and waiter didn't come back to refill water...it's probably covid safe as chef doesn't taste the food for sure. Came to Asheville to spend a few days visiting our son. Our first meal was at Benne on Eagle. It was a great choice. The staff and our waitress were very attentive. We started with the gizzards, meat, and pickles app. It was perfect - something for everyone to share. All of our entrees hit the spot. The Chicken Confit, the Pork Shank, and Trout Two Ways were all great. I wish I had taken pics. The lone disappointment was the chocolate bread pudding. It was served like a piece of pound cake and it was very dry, not anything like we would expect of a bread pudding. I would certainly recommend it. read more

Not impressed. I think the menu changes seasonally because the October 2020 was absolutely not southern comfort which is how the restaurant is described. Nothing on the menu was particularly interesting to me or memorable. My smoked scallop Caesar salad was pretty terrible, but my husbands chicken was okay. The service is decent but the hostess kind of ruined it for us. She didn't seat us for a good 5 to 10 minutes even though our table was open because she was busy texting. Benne on Eagle street was an incredible evening for my wife and I, the drive from Knoxville to Asheville was well worth the adventure. Chef Malcolm took extra care of us with his French specialty dishes, completely off the menu I might add. The menu alone would be enough to satisfy any foodie though. Our waiter Nehemiah was extremely helpful discerning the menu selection for us. For selfish reasons we had hopes of meeting Ashley Shanti who was no longer there. The complexities of the food flavors were nothing like I have ever experienced. My partner and I arrived late right before closing time after a 10-hour drive, famished and exhausted. This was truly an amazing start to our first experience in Asheville together! We started with their Mac & Cheese ($8, not pictured) and Fried Okra ($9) to start, before diving into their Roasted Half Chicken ($26) and Sunburst Trout and Scallops ($33) for our mains. By the way, I love a good seasonal menu, and we were both impressed by how fresh and innovative their ingredients were. If you enjoy soul/fusion food, you'll appreciate the twist that Benne On Eagle makes to their dishes. I still wish that I'd tried their Korean-inspired Cabbage and Mushroom Pancake to complement the kimchi in my trout entrée. This is a hidden downtown gem on Eagle Street behind the Fire Department. Had a salad, the "lollipops" (chicken legs) appetizer, and the short rib. The fusion of jerk spices with hoe cake and honey drizzles gives the food a spicy sweet flavor with roots in traditional southern soul food in a cozy and interesting ambiance. It may be a few steps off the beaten path of the typical touristy hubbub, and every step is worth taking to get the chance to taste their food and experience their friendly and fast service. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Asheville. All is flavorful. I've been twice and had small tastes of roughly 25 dishes. As for apps, the fish cakes, the buttermilk britches, the chicken wings, and the Mac and cheese are dope. When ramps are back in season, the charred ramps are dynamite. One of my dinner buddies thought their fish was slightly too salty, but chose to return given how tasty everything else was. I tried half the current entrees and they were all worth ordering. All their desserts are splendid and there's a nice variety. I definitely plan on returning many times. I could eat the buttermilk britches all day long. read more

The duck ham cornbread was dry dry dry and $10 for two small bites. The dates and ricotta small plate desperately needed salt (asked our server twice and never got it). I ordered the Haitian Griot which arrived cold. It was then returned dried out after obviously being placed under a salamander to reheat. My husband's New York strip ($38) arrived without jus. More fat and gristle than meat, it was seriously underwhelming. The mac and cheese side ($15) was the best part of the meal but way overpriced for the portioning. Stayed at The Foundry and found ourselves at Benne for breakfast...twice. My wife is a very straightforward breakfaster and enjoyed scrambled eggs with cheese and crispy bacon...both days. I had the eggs benedict on a biscuit one day and biscuits & gravy the other. TIP! Ask for the housemade hot sauce! That was absolutely AMAZING on the biscuits & gravy. Coffee and lattes were good, too. Service on our first breakfast was excellent, less so the next day (took our orders without writing it down--only to discover things weren't done as we asked). So Benne in Eagle.ok here goes typos and grammar issues abound these are all stream of consciousness. So let's start with the GOOD! Decide is cool has a nice vibe. Somewhat bright for dinner where we were sitting. The bulbs on the booth walls are abit distracting as well as the LED pars on the track lighting. Small point source so really contrasty and harsh. The leds shining on the wall over the bench seat wall could just use a dim down honestly. But over all nice vibe. Ok now to the service. Not much to say pretty average I tipped over 20% which is my average, so above average service I'd say. The food So we got the catfish and waffles. Portion size for this app was great more like a small plate portion. The waffles seemed very eggy and not super firm which was a bit of a turn off. I like a little snap to my waffles. The cinnamon spice in the batter was nice for the first few bites but got old quick. The fish was not seasoned well really kind of soggy and no crunch to it at all. I have to say for the real asheville folks they'd remember the soul food place that was up the street on eagle towards Limones. That had some killer catfish. Anywho the slaw that came with the dish was excellent still crunchy and not to saucy had great flavor. Now my last bite was the best which is usually very rare. Combo of fish wafer syrup and slaw. Was nice. Maine course. The pork meds Alaina Nd porks belly were great. Best pork belly I've had in a while the medallions were tender and had a little char from the seat in there great flavor. The sweet potato dumpling feeds so so. And the braised red cabbage was so soft and to sweet. Now the Mac n cheese is home style and a good portion for a side. It was nice. Above average. But not off putting in any way. Usually Mac n cheese is to rich it was balance very nice and had a great amount of crunchy edge cheese on the cast iron dish. The bbq ribs. (uGLy) so first bit. Man. I thought inward getting sick and had an acid reflux moment. Then I realized no i. didn't the ribs were so acidic with the vinegar sauce. Oh man I mean you know that taste when you throw up a little in your mouth and it has the metallic acidic flavor. Well that was it. That rob in a nut shell. Now that was just the sauce. The rib itself wasn't bad. A little to tender in my opinion. Seemed steamed for to long. The cho chow. Man so bitter. Not sure about that plate in general. Savory vinegar ribs with butter chow chow. I mean bitter. Pickles bitter just bitter. I think that the braised cabbage would be a better paring honestly. The great. Oh man the collars on the side those were terrific. I'd go back for the side of Mac n cheese and collards and the slaw. Anytime. These collards were big beautiful leaves perfectly tender and well balanced with a generous portion of shredded ham hock. Slightly sweet with an ice kick of spicy vinegar. Man. I'd eat a tub of those if I could. Just got for those. And you'd be happy Now. I know some Might think me harsh. But I'm honest. I'd go back and try some new things for and get the stuff I like from this trip again too. The cocktails all Looked good my wine was really good. Things are pretty well priced.
