Masa was basically my non-only seafood fare on a recent Connecticut trip. I appreciate both the wonderful staff and the two friendly locals who graciously steered me in the right direction when my internal monologue became external. With its Latin American focus, I felt like the Peruvian chicken would be the best bet. Plus it was listed first on the menu (unlike concert setlists the best isn't usually saved for last - what's the deal with The Killers opening with Mr. Brightside? - but I digress). This was superb, partly thanks to the salsa verde, but also due to the excellent basil bread. I also enjoyed the mint lemonade. The local customers, like many Yelpers, raved about the Chinese BBQ sandwich and said I should get it next time. I had a moment of indie-rock snobbery and thought I can get Chinese sandwiches anytime in NYC, but I was curious about the emphatic praise. For a second I pretended I couldn't possibly get a second sandwich. So with some self-delusion combining "I didn't eat breakfast" and "these nice people told me to get another one" I got the BBQ sandwich. Their food is delightful! I have previously crossed paths with the owner, who used to work at Oyster Club in nearby downtown Mystic. I ordered the Peruvian Chicken Sandwich, which tasted so fresh and well seasoned while also being quite filling. However, as I observed them continue to make incredible looking food, I ordered an Onion Soup empanada. It was phenomenal! Like it sounds, it has caramelized onions while also adding in a couple cheeses. Be prepared for this one to be juicy and wet; however, the flavor is worth needing multiple napkins! The staff are incredibly kind and you can tell that the staff genuinely enjoy working together and making incredible food. There is a cozy Latin American feel to the space. There is an abundant feeling of love during your visit and in the food itself. With it being located within the Velvet Mill, you have an opportunity to check out other small businesses. Anytime I return to Mystic, I will make sure to stop by Masa! read more

Grabbed lunch on a quiet Wednesday. Great, low-key atmosphere. 4 counter seats overlooking the kitchen, and then plenty of tables in the covered atrium. Staff were very friendly. Had the special, seafood risotto, which was pretty hearty, and had a good amount of seafood. Preparation was perfect. Also tried an empanada, which was seemed a touch pricey when I ordered, but it was very large compared to empanadas I've had elsewhere...and delicious. It's rare for me to leave a Yelp review, but I had to for Masa because of how amazing the food was. Everything was so fresh and delicious. I tried the Peruvian chicken sandwich because it seemed like the most popular item, and it was the best sandwich I've ever eaten. The beef empanada and pork carnitas tostadas were also excellent. I loved the food so much that after a walk around the Velvet Mill, and despite not being very hungry, I went back and tried their birria sandwich. It was somehow even better than the chicken. So. Good! Get the basil bread. (They also sell individual rolls, I bought 3!) Everything is fresh, unique, and impeccably seasoned. They are taking sandwiches to a new level. This is a great addition to the Velvet Mill, and depending on the time of day, you can take advantage of excellent coffee or Beerd beers located in neighboring stalls inside. We popped in for a late lunch and split the Peruvian sandwich, which was amazing, and the wings, which were so tender and covered in great spices and sauce. You MUST try this place. It's unique, fabulous service and as fresh as it gets. The eggs and peppers breakfast sandwich called my name all week and was even better than I remembered. Incredibly flavorful. I couldn't stop audibly making "mmmmm" noises while enjoying. I've gotten the tapioca bread every time, warm and cheesy and so unique. Can't wait to try to the 3 empanadas I took home for dinner tomorrow. The staff are kind and enthusiastic about their food. Let's keep this place thriving! For those unfamiliar with the Velvet Mill, it's a fun place to explore with great food options. Just make sure you leave room for Masa. Wow. I just had the best Cuban sandwich of my life. My wife and I are addicted to the French onion empanadas! Today we tried the Cuban and wow. Flavor galore! The meat was perfect. Great people and love being able to eat in the mill! read more

We have eaten here several times. Today we had the beef empanadas, and they were outstanding. Last week we had the onion soup empanadas and another fantastic meal. The squash soup is good also. Everything I have had here has been amazing. The sandwiches look simple but every bite is extremely flavorful and filling. I debated heavily on making this review. As a new place with few revives I understand one negative review can really change a rating but I decided to with it. I strongly believe If an establishment is going to offer a vegetarian option it should be worth ordering. The person at the counter was friendly and the decor was modern and inviting. Those are the positives. As a vegetarian I didn't have high hopes for an "artesian sandwich shop". I skimmed the menu and almost walked away as I wasn't in the mood for goat cheese but did see they had a veggie empanada. After reading the description I was skeptical and found calling it "the veggie" misleading as there was only basil (from the pesto) and onions. But I love empanadas so I went for it. I got it to go and when I lifted it out of the bag it felt very limp, not a great sign for an empanada. (side note my partner also ordered an empanada and now the rid them had any labeling) I could not lift it out of the wrapper since it was so soft which made eating it difficult. On top of that my first bite was a disaster. I had a hot goo oozing out and spilling on to my hand and the wrapper. The filling was soupy and disappointing. There was a small amount of cheese and any onion must have been blended into the pesto. After this experience I have no desire to go back and give the other vegetarian options a try read more
