Heat pump died 4 years in; Warranty didn't apply; Zero flexibility. After successfully accomplishing a challenging installation, with a good bid and good communication, I was hopeful about this company. Unfortunately the unit died 4 years in. They offered me a very expensive repair (almost 5K) or a new unit for about 10K. I asked if they would do it at cost because they installed the defective unit, but the rep said there was "zero flexibility." I got back from an 8 day vacation to a 43 degree house and a non functioning furnace. The furnace was only 4 years old so I was hoping it still had plenty of life left in it. I reset it a couple of times with no luck.... I called the company that did the installation but they didn't have any availability to come out for two weeks, so I called places all over town. This was one of the only shops that could both get me in that week AND were kind and understanding of my situation on the phone. Not only were they able to come out that day, they solved the problem right away and were able to get the part and install it within an hour of them being there. Best part is they are upfront and fair with their prices so you know exactly what you are going to get with them. Great guys, I started doing business with them 4 years ago and have had nothing but great experiences. I signed up for the Maintanence Program where they come out twice a year to clean and upkeep my system. Never any problems and always super thoughtful. The techs are great and respectful, and whoever is training them appreciates the customer relationship, they're super honest and the one time I didn't listen to their advice had me calling them in the middle of a heat wave to fix my A/C because of a part failure that they warned me should have been serviced/replaced. I recommend them every chance I get, they're not the cheapest they're the best and their prices are the fairest out there, if you're looking for cheapest, move along but if you need fair prices where you don't get gauged then call 72 Degrees. If I could give 0 stars I would, and this is the first time I've felt compelled enough to give a negative yelp review. 72 degrees is dishonest, lacks transparency around pricing and the diagnostics, and has the worst customer service I've ever experienced. They will tell you something cost $1000 but will not elaborate on the itemized pricing for parts, labor, etc.. We had an issue with our hvac system and the technician was smiling as he presented the costly repairs to us. It was evident his pay day was the top priority. As temperatures rose on Sunday of Labor Day weekend, we found our A/C unit was not turning on. Called 72 Degrees and left a message with the answering service. Less than a half-hour later, the owner called (covering for his team members, so they could be off for the holiday) and said he'd be there in under 3 hours. He arrived in 2, diagnosed and fixed the problem quickly. Charge was far below what we had expected, particularly for an emergency, holiday w/e call. We have worked with this company for years, and they are always professional, skilled, and thorough in their explanations. They show up when they promise, and they price fairly. Our experience has been quite a bit different from these glowing reviews. We purchased our Lennox unit from this company three years ago. Naturally, it failed last week during the hottest week(s) of summer, but that's just the end cap to this experience. First - the system we had installed did not meet our needs. While it cools the bottom floor of our home adequately, the upstairs is typically 8-degrees, on average, hotter. Since this is primarily where we live and sleep, it would have been perhaps important for the sales person to tell us that one unit wouldn't be adequate for cooling a 2400 square foot residence. In other words: we don't feel like we got full disclosure when this was sold to us. Because of the cooling issues upstairs, we had them come out to try to attempt a "fix", which was a costly service call to build a makeshift scoop to funnel more air upstairs. Did nothing, of course. We had anorher tech out for routine maintenance for our upgraded filter system, but they didn't bring the right filter and left after installing one much less expensive than what we'd paid for. We were told they would "make it right," and that never happened. Which brings us to the catastrophic until failure. We called, and of course no one could come out for several days. It's been over a week now, and I've paid another company to diagnose, which is how we know the issue. 72 degrees can come out, of course, but will also charge a diagnosis fee, as well as labor for fixing or replacing the 3-year-old unit. My family, including our two year old, have been displaced from our house for over a week now. My wife called the company and asked for the owner to call back - which he never did. Their website advertises "satisfaction or it's free." Does this sound like satisfaction? Are they going to make it right and fix it free? Is this blatant false advertising? You be turned judge. IMO - there are other reputable companies out there that truly are responsive. This is not one of them. read more

They were able to get us in on short notice, Aaron not only diagnosed the issue that we were having with our AC that was causing the sale of our home to be on hold, but, he left to get the parts and came back within an hour to do the work. I can't say enough about 72 Degrees Heating and Air Conditioning. I have a less than 3 year old HVAC system I (mistakenly) purchased from another company. On the coldest day in Portland in years, today I have a furnace that is absolutely struggling to run and keeps shutting off. I did not even expect to be able to schedule. Trevor Smith came and quickly diagnosed the problem, and had the cool air back on about 30 minutes after he got here. He was very good at keeping me informed of his progress, and had the part on his truck and got things fixed quickly! Our heater decided to have problems again this winter. I called 5 places (2 of which never even called back) and had 3 come out to our home. The first two couldn't find the problem. After having Trevor come out we finally had heat !! He actually took things apart and showed me what the problem could be while the others would just say it's working right now. When we needed a new furnace, we caused them a lot of trouble through various back-and-forths, indecisions and misinformation caused mostly by what turned out to be an erroneous bad review here on Yelp--that reviewer has since deleted his review as 72 exonerated themselves from that rant that was caused by a hilariously shoddy second opinion--ask 72, it's quite amusing--but 72 came through with flying colors. The whole crew, from the boss who came out to reassure us along with his chief engineer, to the person on the phone who took our cancelations and delays, were always professional, always accommodating, always friendly and always polite. When we saw the light and did get them in, they worked late and stuck to their quote despite the job turning out to be much trickier, time-consuming and parts-demanding than expected. They kept the house clean, they were good with our kids and dog (and me) getting in the way all the time, and all this after we gave them the run-around at the start. I can't begin to explain how happy we were with your technician, Trevor! We just moved to Lake Oswego and have had a couple issue with our Heater. We had another company out and without looking it over to closely recommended a new Heater for about $5000. Trevor came out and went over everything with a fine tooth comb and turned out the problem was rain water in a pipe that was preventing it from starting up. This was a very unique problem and resolve for about $275. Trevor's goal was to fix it as efficiently as possible while the other company only wanted to sell me a new system without putting the effort to fix correctly. Was quoted $1386.00 for a new induction motor for a Bryant Plus 90 furnace. The reason behind the quoted price was that it is a level 6 repair service, but I didn't get a reasonable explanation of what a level 6 repair service was. The furnace broke on what felt like the coldest week of the year. Mother Nature was pressuring me to get it fixed, but my own frugal nature took over, and I stated to the repair technician, "Well, that's not going to happen today." The technician went to his vehicle, and came back apologizing. He let me know that he accidentally misquoted the price, and that the actual cost to repair the furnace was now only $759.00. By that time I had already researched induction motors for my furnace online. They sell for roughly $300.00, which comes with the blower assembly. I asked if he could give me an itemized list of the costs for repairs, he could not. Weighing the options of a cold house, or spending $759.00 to get it warmed up again. I reluctantly declined, and decided to call the other local repair companies. The technician from 72 Degrees seemed very non-threatening, he wore shoe covers when entering the house as their website claimed. He was very friendly. He seemed knowledgeable, and quickly diagnosed the problem. However, the initial $1386.00 quote gave me reason to pause and question my trust in the business. If I would have nonchalantly agreed to the service, would he have later noticed the misquoted price, and charged the lesser amount? I'd like to think he would. The website portrayed the company and employees as people I could trust, and I love having faith in people. Unfortunately after my experience today, I decided to look elsewhere. I then called all the competing businesses in the area and tried to get quotes on having a technician come and replace the induction assembly. The earliest I could get an appointment was the following week, and they all charged more for diagnosis, and wouldn't waive that fee, nor did they sound nearly as friendly.as the people I talked to at 72 Degrees. In the end I ordered the part from Amazon, studied YouTube tutorial videos, and replaced the part myself. However, next time it breaks I'll call 72 Degrees, and accept their second quote! It wasn't a great experience but 5 stars for "Woohoo! As good as it gets!", seems the most accurate summary of my experience after calling the competitors. read more

Last year, I had 72 degrees come out to do maintenance on my furnace, they did an inspection and showed me some tiny screen and said my exchanger had some small crack in it, and then shut off the gas to my furnace during the coldest week of the year ( around 20deg all week ) while offering to replace my furnace for a pretty hefty sum. The tech that was out stated that he only saw maybe 2 cases of cracks in heat exchangers per year, so I figured it was just my bad luck. I ended up having someone else replace the furnace ( frankly I was pretty mad they shut off my heat when it was so cold out side ). Yesterday, I noticed that my neighbor was having their furnace replaced by 72 degrees, and got the exact same story that I had about having a cracked heat exchanger. Now I'm not saying that 72 degrees is necessarily scamming people, it's possible that my neighbor and I both had the same issue, but if I were to go back in time I'd certainly get a second opinion before committing to have my furnace replaced. They were definitely professional and seemed up front but I'd still be cautious of working with them. read more

Spoke with the manager about the disparity he was polite and offered to knock $25 off but not willing to make right the fact that they had over-estimated their labor time by 400%. I had two other bids and I did not feel they had the level of knowledge and experience that Steve had. We have a contract with this company since they installed out HVAC system in Feb 2012. It included a 10 year warranty of all parts and labor. Recently it malfunctioned and the 72 Degrees technician indicated that the Zone Board needed to be replaced. He told me the Zone Board would cost approximately $1200 which seemed extremely high. The next day I talked to a lady at their office in Raleigh and she agreed the work would be under warranty. When the tech arrived to do the work he told us that the Zone Board was NOT covered by the warranty! I called the manager who told me that he had no record of them doing the original installation of the Zone Board. He said that the Zone Board is not considered part of the HVAC "system" and they just used the Zone Board that was already on the system they were replacing. I knew this to be untrue since I have a record of a repair they did "UNDER WARRANTY" on one of the Zone Board Sensors two years after they installed the system. I explained to him that if they knew the Zone Board was NOT theirs, why would they have done WARRANTY work on it previously? He told me regardless of the paperwork I had on file, they would NOT do the work under warranty. What is worse is that while we were on the phone, I went online and found numerous Zone Boards for 2X and 4X systems; the prices ranged from ~$99 to $200. I asked him why the huge difference in price? He stated that that have a mark-up on the cost in order to make money. A mark-up is understandable but a 500% mark-up is unethical. He said labor is included in that price. I asked him what the labor charge was and he said they have a standard labor rate; so I asked him to tell me how much of the $1200 would be labor. At that point he hung up. This company engages in disreputable business practices and the community should be warned not to do business with them. They do not honor warranties and price gouging. read more

They were supposed to service our interior unit (this was gone over with them 3 times) NOT the heat pump (it was just repaired) but when they came out, they looked at the interior unit then went out and cleaned off the heat pump! When asked if they finished servicing the interior unit, was told the owner said only the heat pump. Tech (was very nice, professional, felt sorry for him as he was just doing as instructed by owner) contacted owner and informed him of our dissatisfaction and he said heat pump only ... obviously does not care about customer satisfaction! Tech then presented us with bid $210 for cleaning the coils! IS THIS NOT MAINTENANCE??? Took our money for the maintenance and inspection offer, did nothing but redo what was just done 2 weeks ago!
