Wow. This place has changed. I used to eat here a lot a long time ago but was shocked and frustrated with my recent experience. I came in early evening (around 7-ish) and was ignored by the staff (servers and chefs). Looking around, I saw that they were busy so I stood there patiently giving them space because I understand that it can get crazy and I get that. The sad thing is, there were customers leaving around that time and they were acknowledged by the staff (all the while I was standing there awkwardly). There were seats available on the bar and I even made eye contact with some of the staff, but they continued to ignore me, not even saying "please wait for a moment because we're busy, etc..." or anything that would at least let me know that they've noticed me. After more than 5-minutes of awkwardly standing and feeling invisible, I left. I'm not asking for a royal treatment. I'm just a customer who expects proper etiquette and decent professionalism from the staff. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. I'm definitely NOT going to this place anymore. read more

I'm from Hawaii so eating good sushi is especially important to me and I've tried one other Japanese restaurant in this town and I thought that other restaurant was just okay for its price. But, Bento Plus was regularly priced for sushi ($$), but worth the money you spend. It had many different options with its own style and you could truly taste the flavor and freshness of it, I tried the T&T roll because I love shrimp tempura & spicy ahi combined and it was so good! Best sushi in Gresham for sure. True, Gresham doesn't really have many options, but still, it's high quality food at reasonable prices. The service is friendly and efficient. The sake selection is good. The rolls are pretty big and there's a nice variety. I'm a bit of a purist, so I usually only go for sashimi and nigiri, and the fish was fresh and well presented. But the menu is comprehensive enough even for the raw-fish-phobic. My only quibble is that the lights are pretty bright, and I wouldn't mind a bit more mood lighting in the evening. I'm happy this place seems to be thriving and I hope more people give them business to keep them around for a while. read more

Food: The food is decent/average quality. As one review stated, you can get this quality of food from most any other Japanese place. Value: Good-sized portions at more-than-reasonable rates. This is their huge upside. Dining Room: Small; but it IS a strip mall, so, it's ok. Service: Not good! Being Japanese-American and familiar with Japanese/Chinese/Korean and American cultures, I thought I knew what to expect. This place is not run by Japanese. We were judged and scolded for letting our 2 year-old use a fork because it was "dangerous." I mean, I get CYA and liability, but there has got to be a better way to address it than loudly upbraiding your patrons in front of your other guests. Servers weren't exactly rude each of the four times we ate there, but they were dismissive and inattentive. Bottom Line: I am a repeat customer, but ONLY for the bargain prices. We call ahead and do take out. I suggest you do the same, and in the end, it's better for them as well, saving on their labor. They won't have to wait on you, which they don't appear to like doing anyway. read more

There are few changes at Bento Plus and love them all! Have been a regular customer to this sushi place and recently they have changed their seaweed and cucumber salad and it is very fresh. There are new faces around restaurant. They are nice and give great service! There is bit of wait time for food but it is alright, new people seem to be trying to get use to the business and the food is worth the wait. Will come more often! read more

With what was available with their limited menu, the food wasn't bad but the service was absolute garbage. After we ordered my family and I sat and waited for food, and when the food came we asked the waitress who spoke little to no English for some silverware for all of us and she nodded her head and walked away and proceeded to clean another table. When we got her attention again she looked at us and none of her head yes and then proceeded to walk away and help another table. About three minutes later she walked by us and asked us if everything was OK and we told her no because we don't have any silverware which we had asked her for five minutes before. Not once did she ask us our food was once we were able to eat, not once did she come around asking us if we needed more water. The food itself was good but the service was garbage I have had better service at McDonald's and Taco Bell then I did at this place. My recommendation is get food from there but get it to go do not dine in. read more

Bento Plus needs to change their name! They blend in with all the "bento" places up here and by name alone can easily be dismissed. They should be calling themselves ' EAT BEST SUSHI EVER HERE". Or something like that. It is one of those places where when located in the middle of a strip mall it can also be easily dismissed. Luckily there are enough people that know of this place to keep it alive. I talked to the couple that owns the place and they have been there for 5 years doing a steady business. I have been shopping at Cosmo Prof for 2 years now ,which is at the end of this strip mall, and have NEVER thought to go in there until the other day. We were starving and it said sushi in small print on the door so we decided to try it. YAHOO! My stomach did a roll the second we walked in, you could smell the clean freshness of the place. There is a sushi bar on the left side with seating for 8 and about 10 tables on the floor to sit at. This isn't the place you come with a large crowd it would be way too much for this tiny space. There was a steady lunch crowd in at the time but we didn't have to wait long for our food so that was our first of many pleasant surprises. The husband is the sushi chef and the wife is the waitress. They are a cute couple. She brings you water immediately along with the huge menu. The size of the rolls are as big as the menu. I have never seen so many combinations and for the price it is an incredible value. You could eat there for a couple months every day and try something different. Seriously. I want to! Their miso soup is perfection. Just the right amount of tofu and green onion and salty goodness. I ordered the Bento box with shrimp tempura and california roll. Teriyaki Chicken was so tender and seasoned just right not being too sweet with the gloppy sauce on top. This is what usually happens at bento places I have been to, they over compensate on the sauce to try to make the chicken more tender. Wrong! This was actually marinated in the sauce then cooked the proper way with just a dash of sesame seeds on top. No glossy coating necessary folks just tender bite after bite of chicken. Onto my favorite- Tempura. I have never had better! The batter is light yet plentiful and covers the veggies that have already been slightly grilled. YUM. There is a sweet dipping sauce that accompanies the tempura nicely, I think there is honey in it. When I went back the other day to just have the appetizer tempura it was a huge portion in which I had to take leftovers home. I ate it cold later on and even then it was super tasty and not spongy at all. Now that is a good tempura folks! My hubby had an assortment of rolls and I sampled the eel one and it was delicious. The eel was so fresh and tender. We only ordered the bento box and four roll combos and had to take food home. Now leftover sushi is where the tell tale sign of a good shop is. It was as good 5 hours later! I am so happy we stumbled upon this treasure chest of sushi goodness. I can't wait to go back and try more goodies. read more

Bento Plus is one of the few places I feel safe eating vegan in Gresham. It's owned by a really nice couple who are there everyday making sushi. They have many options for vegans - edamame, veggie tempura, fried tofu. There's tons of vegan sushi - super veggie rolls, inari, avocado,cucumber, veggie tempura rolls, buddha rolls (mushroom and cucumber), and inari rolls (inari and cucumber). Everything is prepared fresh by the sushi chef and is inexpensive but still great quality. I have never personally eaten the fishy rolls, but my non-vegan friends rave about the sushi. The restaurant is small, but usually everyone fits...unless it's dinnertime, in which case you might have a little wait. Bento Plus is a rare thing in Gresham - a delicious independently owned place in a sea of chain resturants. read more

We frequent many Asian/Japanese/Sushi restaurants and this was by far one of the worst experiences. Unfortunately, we went there due to the largely positive reviews. We had sushi at another restaurant last week, so decided to try other traditional Japanese offerings. My wife selected fried tofu with vegetables, which was served with flavorless fried tofu and their version of "vegetables" which was cooked cabbage, shredded carrots, and one tiny piece of broccoli. Also tasteless. I had a Donburi bowl of sukiyaki beef, egg and rice and what arrived was one of the strangest renditions of Donburi I have ever seen. Call it Donburi SOUP. Sukiyaki beef was really poorly done, vegetables were the same as in the tofu dish, and the whole concoction had the appearance of pig slop. Also was totally tasteless. We did have a vegetable tempura appetizer and that was well-prepared. For the combination of the three dishes and a tip, we were out $25 and this place will never see us again. We walked in to eat with our 8 week old baby and were not even greater or seated. Good value. The sushi was beautiful and delicious. I had a vegetable tempura roll (outstanding), a Philadelphia roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and avocado, and a creamy scallop maki, all for about $13.50. I used to be a regular at Bento Plus and loved it a lot! But after the place got new owners... the place has been turned in to a horrible place. The service is awful and the sushi isn't anywhere near as good as it used to be. Today I went in and ordered some rolls to go, the lady who took my order was very rude and snobbish. She was in no way friendly... Then when I got my order she just walked up to me with my bag of food and didn't make eye contact or anything, just held out the bag to me and didn't say "have a good day" or anything. Horrible customer service. When i got home and opened my box, i noticed that my order of "White Cali" that i paid extra for to have cream cheese in didn't have any cream cheese. Also all rolls have gotten very skimpy. I am extremely disappointed and I will not be returning to Bento Plus. read more

This place was great! Sushi is affordable and good quality. I took my mother who is a bit leery of sushi and has not had it many times. But the presentation was good and she enjoyed it. Also she was able to order a fancy veggie roll which she was more comfortable with. The rolls, especially the veggie roll we ordered, were a bit on the large side and hard to keep in one piece while eating. More so than some other places. It is not the most elegant sushi you will ever eat. But on the other hand, we had a fun time making a mess and reassembling our rolls into more manageable bites. In addition to sushi, my mother had a salad - I didn't try it but she said the dressing was really good. Also ordered edamame which was served HOT, just how I like it. Not just borderline warm. And we had green tea mochi ice cream which was a nice little dessert for a nice little price. Just the right size for our full bellies. read more

Hands down best sushi place around this area of town. We try to rotate through all the different fun rolls they have, but we really love the T&T so we get that with 2 different rolls. They do not skimp on fish or ingredients like some places we go to and everything is always fresh-never fishy. They are quick and efficient and the guys behind the counter know what they're doing. I like to watch them while we wait for our order. They're prices are also very fair and I tip them heavily. We have several places closer to us for sushi but I do not mind going out of the way to get here. I have been to quite a few other sushi places in the area and I hate when I get something and I have to question the freshness. I have never done that here. I know it's safe to eat and indulge on. We haven't tried much of their other food, but it looks go. This review is mostly for their sushi. Good work keep it up! read more

My husband Michael and i love bento plus they make the best and freshest sushi in Gresham!

First, I want to say I love this restaurant; my favorites are sushi, udon and ramen. I always get beef udon or beef ramen. The beef has a slight sweet taste and the broth is YUMMMMM! On rare occasions, I get the restaurants takes on some special sushi rolls which are delicious; my favorites are the Lion King Roll and the Godzilla Roll. Second, and bad news, they HAVE ROACHES. REPEAT: AS OF JANUARY 2014, THEY HAVE ROACHES. We were at the restaurant, it was a busy Friday night. We could see all the tables were filled and the only seats available were at the sushi counter/sushi bar. We stood around for about a minute and a server asked us if we wanted to sit at the sushi counter/sushi bar. The place was packed so as they moved us to our seats we stood as someone behind us was getting up. My eyes wandered and I saw a white dish towel sitting in front of the cash register area. If you have not been here before, the sushi bar and cash register are part of the same tabletop/counter which is the same sushi bar/sushi counter. On top of the dish towel was a COCKROACH. Based on my personal experience I could tell this was an cockroach; I've seem them personally and on several TV shows which highlight unclean facilities. It had the same characteristics as a exoskeleton; chitinous, moving antenna, sprouty little legs; this looked like a roach. The server who escorted us to the sushi counter/sushi bar had left to greet guests so I could not alert them to the cockroach. I immediately alerted my party to the cockroach and it was clearly visible to them. As it's antenna were moving, I could tell it locked eyes with me. It stared at us, antennas moving, for at least one minute. I thought it might have found a home on a dish rag. I didn't know roaches liked bleach. I discreetly asked my party to leave. There was no WAY I WAS EATING SUSHI AL A ROACH. As I was advising my party, the hostess saw we were alarmed or in distressed. I pointed to the cockroach, which started to run at the same moment. The server immediately started hitting/whipping the towel where the cockroach was last at with their own dish towel. On the way out there was a couple waiting to be seated and one member of my party approached the couple. The party member leaned in and warned the couple that the reason we were leaving was because there was a live cockroach on the bar/counter. It was not confirmed killed. The server looked around to see if anyone had seen the incident. I couldn't tell as I only wanted to get out of the restaurant. I hate cockroaches. As we walked through the parking lot, I could see the couple we had spoken to exit the restaurant. I thought they made a wise choice not to EAT ROACHES. read more

The lady there came to drop off water to us at the table but quickly walked off before i could open my mouth and tell her we were ready to order. We thought she would come back maybe 5 mins later or so but after waiting 15-20 min later and seeing the lady walk pass us twice to help the table next to us, we decided to just get up and leave. Okay, sorry but I have to disagree with the reviews...maybe it's just my experience and just this one time..in which case, it's just plain ol' bad luck! The ambiance: Cute little Japanese restaurant near Mt. Hood. Very basic interior decor... you have your sushi counter and then the tables + chairs. They have some interesting decorations and you can read the history of sushi (that was cool...I didn't know it started out as fish preservation!). The food: Okay, there are A LOT of choices. Kudos to them! The portions are GINORMOUS! A bonus! However, since I'm rating on the quality of food...I stop praising them there. I ordered the Charishi bowl - sashimi + rice. The rice was plain rice (should be using Japanese moist rice!) and didn't have any of the vinegar taste to it. Also, the rice was cold...which meant it probably was sitting out or old. The fish - although plenty...was not cut well. I totally underestimated this factor in good sushi. The sashimi was not only awkwardly cut (lumpy and bumpy in areas), but it was cut too thick. Now I know that the cut is a definite factor to making sushi good! My friend + fiance ordered the power bentos. Again HUGE portions...lots of tempura...we had so much food that we had to take back leftovers! But ... again, the sashimi + rice...make it a 3 for me...unfortunately. Maybe a 3.5 just because of the sheer bulk of food. The price: VERY reasonable for the amount of food they give...this is why I would say this is closer to a 3.5 than a 3 rating. I would've paid more to get better sushi, but hey. The teriyaki was not bad. It's about $5-8 for "exotic" sushi rolls...a steal! The service: decent. eh, not much else I can say about it. This little gem has everything great going for it from the chef to the waitress to the food of course! The food is always consistently fabulous, prepared perfectly, and presented with great appeal. The waitress always remembers what we order - down to the drinks, and, if you're lucky, once in a while the chef will spontaneously present you with a dessert surprise (just don't expect it!) Similar to most everyone else on this planet, if the owners are treated with respect, you'll be respected in return. read more

First time here and we didn't have the highest expectations. We really wanted some sushi and there isn't a lot of good options in Gresham. Bento Plus is definitely more than just Bento. I was not only pleasantly surprised but very satisfied. It's not the least expensive sushi around but everything we had was well worth it. Have been looking for decent sushi since moving away from our favorite in Tualatin. We have finally found a place that exceeds our previous fave! The rolls here are huge! The tempura shrimp is simply amazing if eaten right away and we love the fried gyoza dumplings. Only drawback is the seating area is small and groups larger than about 5 are hard to accommodate. read more
