I've been wondering if we need a new roof or roof repairs due to recent hail, and some water intrusion on our first floor right above one window. Had three other companies come out, and the first one said, need new roof soon and new siding soon, within 4 years. Next one said, need new roof immediately and could use new siding. Third one said need new roof in around 7 years. hmmmm..... Out comes Berg roofing--my 4th estimate. Guy says to me, your architectural shingles are in fabulous shape. The reason they look uneven to you is because they're very long, and overlap. They are not damaged by hail (or very little). Wait until you see see the coating that is on them in your gutter downspouts. They are coated with granules. They withstand up to 130 mph winds. That roof will last you indefinitely. Do you have leaks on second floor, he asks me. No. He goes inside house. Looks at 2 small leaks above first floor window. I ask, is it the siding. He says, no, it's probably a lack of insulation around that area, in the first floor ceiling. Is this the first time you've gotten moisture? I say, yes, first time in 16 years. He says try not to use a whole house humidifier (I rarely do, although I did run it for a month this past winter). He adds either circle them in pencil or cover them with Kilz and see if they re-appear next spring. If they do, call an insulation company or dry wall company, and have them add insulation around where the moisture appears. He says, it's not the window, not the siding, not the roof. It's a lack of insulation, and when the cooling turns into warming around spring, the area defrosts, and if there's not enough insulation, you can get small water spots. OMG! Is this the only honest roofing company out there? I was so impressed. Guess where we'll go when we need new roofing? read more

They did a poor job last year. We had someone else fix their mistakes. There were a lot a nails in my gutters, which would have ended up in my yard and gardens. The pitch in front was wrong and we had water in the front dripping in front of the door, which turned to ice in the winter. They sent someone to fix it, but he did not know what he was doing. Awesome service from call back for setting appointment for estimate to cleanup after the job!!!! There was a small snafu that was discovered just at the start of installation but it was handled well. We oversized our gutters and downspouts and only downspouts were correct at outset and we had to wait for the truck with the right size equipment to come to the job. More than satisfied. Berg was hired to re-roof a section of our roof. The job was not done professionally. They outsourced to a third party and damaged roof drip edges and didn't replace them in the tear off, left gaps in the shingles, and left exposed flashing. Seeking satisfaction required a follow up that wasn't performed correctly. I personnally had to take photos of their work to point out the gaps to the owner of Berg. The owner did not provide a professional demeanor, some verbal confrontation resulted until I showed my captured photos. It was late in the season (November) and Berg promised to return in the spring to correct the poor workmanship. I personnally had to go up on an extension ladder and fix the gaps in their shingling. They never followed up in the spring as promised. I would not recommend Berg as a contractor. read more

I selected Berg because their bid was the lowest. The roof appears to be working well, and they cleaned up afterward. I would suggest if you retain them to insist on a not-to-exceed cost for plywood replacement. I built some cost in for replaced plywood into my budget because I did have one leak. They replaced the plywood on the entire roof which brought the cost to as much or more than their competitors. I paid them all but 8% of the final price because I did not anticipate the extra cost. They are now hounding me for the 8% I have not paid yet and the roof was replaced a little over a month ago. Again they did do a good job on the roof but buyer beware of their bidding. read more

Very disappointed with service and false advertising. I had a tree limb fall on our garage and tear out 3-4 shingles. I looked in our weekly flyers and noticed that Berg Roofing advertises that they can service "Repairs Starting at $100". I called after work hours with no response and left a message. Then called at 11am the next morning and left a second message. Then left a quote message over yelp and immediately received a response back from Emmett B-Business Owner stating "Sorry we can't help you book for the season". I guess because I don't have a total roof replacement I am not a valued customer. I am writing this complaint to 1) complain and warn others about the false advertisement and 2) remember not to use this company when my roofs do need to be replaced two years from now! UPDATE...After posting the review above two things happened...1) got a reply from owner "Sorry we're a good company and are booked up. There's 2000 roofing companies in the Chicago area feel free to call one of them." and 2) finally received a call back and received a message that they will be in my area tomorrow to give me a quote on a new roof (screenshot of iPhone beta transcript). Berg tore off our old roof and installed the new one. Out of the 7-8 estimates I received, Berg came in the lowest and that was with getting all the upgrades. I may have went a little over board with how many roofers I had come out, but it was well worth it. I saved roughly $8k! Nick wrote up our contract and was in touch with me throughout the project. We had the below problems. They did give us some money off, and one of the employees came and did a good job cleaning up/ fixing the problems several days later. Because of that and because the roof does appear to be done well, I am giving them 3 stars instead of 1. I unfortunately cannot give higher than that because of this: * Berg arrived two hours late to our installation appointment that was told us * Our chimney was not painted, per our contract. * When no one was installing the new bathroom vent during roof installation, per our contract, my wife called the rep. He said he would come the same day to install the new bathroom ventilation but he never came. * When we called to schedule a new time for him to come, he said that Friday was best for him. He confirmed a 6:30pm appointment to come by but canceled the appointment five hours prior, after my wife and I already made plans and accommodations to be available. * Berg employees left a square hole in the garage roof, during installation, where wood had been taken out. * Flowers in the front of our yard were smashed by workers during roof installation. * Planted vegetable garden beds in the backyard were stepped all over with visible footprints during roof installation. * Berg employees jumped over our fence into our neighbor's yard and grabbed/used her ladder without permission during roof installation . When they were done, they hopped over the fence again and put it back hoping no one would see. * Berg employees leaned several planks of wood and tools against my neighbor's house and window during roof installation. That is not their property nor ours and makes us look bad as neighbors. * A Berg employee snuck behind our shed, after checking all directions, to urinate in our backyard during roof installation. We had offered our bathroom at the start of the day for employee use. * Berg employees broke the vent light in the bathroom, during roof installation, so that it will no longer turn on. * Berg employees broke one halogen light in the garage during roof installation. It fell from ceiling and shattered. * Berg employees left trash and debris in our garage that had fallen from the roof during roof installation. * Berg employees moved garbage cans, a patio umbrella base, and a compost bin in the middle of the yard during roof installation and then did not put them back. * Berg employees used our garden hose without asking during roof installation. read more

I have worked with Berg before on a roof replacement and the job was completed to perfection. I embarked on a siding and gutters replacement. The siding job looks good but the details and trim work are substandard. It looks like an amateur did it. Berg did respond to my request but stated it can't be better than what it is. The gutter work is fine with the exception of wood damage which they accommodated for that. I will say I had excellent customer service when dealing with their agent and I would love to rate them higher but I am a person that cares about the details. I think your project completion is only as good as the crew they send to you. Ask questions about the crew before the work starts. We used Berg Roofing & Home Improvements about a year ago to put in a ridge vent in our roof. They were very professional and friendly, and we were very happy with the end result. The past few weeks we've experienced extremely high winds where a few of our roof shingles started to pull away from the house. My husband and I tried to fix them ourselves but they weren't easily moving so we didn't want to mess it up without talking to a professional. I called Berg Roofing on Tuesday to see if they could take a look at it. I expected them to tell me that it would take over a week to get to us given that a lot of other houses had wind damage in the area as well - but they sent someone out the next day! The guy who repaired the shingles was very friendly and even fixed a bit of the metal that was pulling away from the house too. All without charge since it was an easy fix and no new parts were needed. Would absolutely recommend them for any roofing needs you may have - I know we will be using them again should we run into any further issues with our roof. read more

My wife and I are very pleased with the roof replacement we got form Berg Roofing. Our project manager John was very prompt and thorough, and delivered on all promises. PROS: 1. Lowest-priced estimate we received from a licensed roofer - by far! Came in $$$ below our insurance claim estimate. And we got a lot of bids. 2. All other bidders insisted on demolishing and replacing our roof gutters. Berg was the only contractor who promised to save our existing gutters. And they delivered. 3. No money down! This was also unique among the roofing contractors we talked to. Made things very easy with our insurance company. As expected the workers found water damaged boards beneath our old roof, and replaced them at very little extra cost. They even agreed to remove our old Dish antenna from our rooftop. Unfortunately, in doing so they accidentally dropped in onto our neighbor's house, breaking their basement window. But without any argument, they settled things with our neighbor right away. I was relieved that this didn't turn into a problem. The workers were on time and very courteous. They arrived 5 minutes early on the promised day, and were finished by mid-morning on day 2. Cleanup was thorough. I combed our front and back yards and found only 3 old roof tiles (one of which was hidden in my tomato plant). There was some damage to some of our garden plants, but that was to be expected, and was not the roofers' fault. Overall, an excellent experience. Dan is a poor communicator. He failed to keep me abreast at the progress of the project. He gave me a three week timeline for when the project would start. A month passed and I hadn't heard anything. I called them, come to find out, work was supposed to start in 4 days, leaving me no time to take off work. I attempted to speak with Dan over the phone to inform him of why I was no longer using his company, and he started in with excuse after excuse. To end the conversation, he interrupted me, told me I was not a nice person, and hung up. I don't know about you, but this is not a person I want to give my money to. read more

I say this because there price was competitive with the 3 other bids we received and we were given options with expert guidance on the pros and cons of each upgrade. My home is 40 years old and most of the windows were extremely drafty. My roof had a few years left, but there was a leak somewhere that had no obvious source. I decided to "re-skin" everything but a stone entry wall. I needed a new roof, gutters, soffit, siding, new windows, and new doors. I also decided to take advantage of a view from my patio by converting an existing window into a set of sliding glass patio doors. I also wanted to have this all done by a single contractor, to avoid conflict between contractors and get an overall warranty to cover whatever could arise. The search started with about 5 companies, and then narrowed down to 3. Berg Roofing had the most comprehensive coverage, and also the best price! John Oros of Berg Roofing was very attentive at the start of the sale and all the way through the last visit. Berg's roofers swarmed my house on the first day, and finished that portion of the job in a single day! They also installed a ridge vent on a portion of the roof that had previously had only "mushroom" vents. This portion was a challenge because while one side has a a slope, the other is flat. They ended up installing the ridge vent in a slight offset from the natural ridge. Ingenious! Berg replaced my soffits with a fully vented soffit system, which, along with better attic vents, made an immediate difference with the late summer heat. The gutters were installed with longer kick-outs, which has stopped my sump pump from needing to run almost continuously during even moderate rainfall. They found the cause of the leak and repaired the support stucture under a lower window which had taken the brunt of the damage. They also replaced support pillars for my front porch which had rotted within their aluminum casing. Berg installed 6" double insulated vinyl siding which has proven to be a great insulator against the heat and this winter's cold. Their siding crew, led by Ceasar, was incredible. They were the ones to install the new soffits, the siding, all the aluminum trim, and all the vinyl siding trim. I had no idea how much intricate work was involved in trimming out the entire house. They did a fine job around all the edges. John Oros had advised and I chose Okna vinyl windows for their style and energy efficiency. The most interesting thing about the windows was that I hadn't originally thought to change the configuration of the windows, and John ended up helping me through cycles of decision as I contemplated changing double slider windows into picture windows with small sliders on the side (so I could get an unobstructed view from the center of the windows). One expanse of windows was a bit extreme (14'), but John patiently helped me through the choices. I am very satisfied with the result! All of the workers were very courteous and careful to clean up at the end of the day. Their master carpenter, Scott, made sure every last item was completed to my satisfaction. I am happy with my choice of Berg Roofing. Having all this work performed by one company was an excellent decision, and now I am enjoying the view and the fact that my home is way more energy efficient than it's ever been! read more

Don't believe them when they say they will color match existing home fixtures. Salesman Bob told us they would match new gutters to our existing facia. Instead we now have white gutters and tan facia. Not even close and when I asked if they could fix it they told me I would have to replace the facia for another $4K. Look elsewhere. read more

Four years ago after just moving into the area, we found out our roof had to be replaced. Dan came out right away to give a quote. His quote was professional and competitive.
