This is one of situations where I "found" this place again after many years. Used to come her back in the 80s when I worked in this area. Almost weekly. Great big menu, lots of great sandwiches, soup, chili and even dessert. Meatless sandwich options too. Ordered the Tomato Bisque Soup, an amazing Turkey Avocado on focaccia and a Pastrami Sandwich, on rye made the traditional way. No pickles. Great little shop, family owned. When he described his father I knew that was the man I used to order from back in the day. Walls show plaques and pictures showing their contributions to the community such as sponsoring many baseball teams and a proud sponsor of dozens of Rose Bowl Parade floats. A grade, clean, plenty of seating but for the most part I think people get it to go. Still can't believe it's been here for this long and I was here 40 yrs ago. . Yelp hours are incorrect, better call and see. Also closed Sunday and Monday now. Prices were very cheap, however the owner stated the menu is changing soon. Seems like this is the last place to raise their prices like everyone else's. Def worth a visit. When back the next day and got a Tuna Melt which was also good. Best around. After an afternoon stroll at Descanso gardens, my wife and I came across Berge's threshold. It is a delightfully immersive experience to a genuine sandwich shop. It was fantastic throwback when ordering a Reuben Sandwich was without regret or avocado. The bread was crispy and thick enough to not fall apart in to a soggy mess. The high quality ingredients including the corned beef because pastrami isn't in a Reuben, that is another sandwich, was heartwarming. We also took an Italian hero to go which was equally impressive. We've driven passed Berges several times and I had a hunch that it would be good. It has that old established neighborhood deli feel. I'm so glad we decided to come in and give it a try. We ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich and a hot pastrami sandwich. The turkey was stacked high with a generous amount of avocado. If you like abuse, then this is your spot! The manager was condescending and over the top rude. I was trying to order a sandwich for my husband over the phone, who was having surgery and needed the person who was picking him up to grab something for my husband to eat in the car on the way home (1.5 hours away). This was the most challenging experience for what should have been easy. I felt berated and worn after placing the order and when I asked to pay, he told me they don't take payment over the phone. I hiked Mount Wilson a couple weeks ago and decided to stop by this bookmarked spot for late lunch/early dinner. My date and I were in the mood for pastrami sandwiches. We walked into this cozy, wood paneled sandwich shop and were greeted by the owner and one of his employees. We talked to the owner for a while about the quality of the food and the processes to make different sandwiches/plates, and eventually my date was talked into trying the tuna melt sandwich instead. After more conversation about the history of the place and their past location, the owner asked if I wanted a pickle or pepperoncinis, and when I said pickle he said "well you're getting both." I'm glad he let me have both, because I would have missed out! The peppers were spicier here than I've had elsewhere, so maybe they pickle their own veggies? Anyway, the pastrami sandwich was absolutely delicious. You MUST try it the way it comes...with the mustard and rye bread. You don't *have* to, but I recommend you do. My date ended up trying some of mine and wishing he ordered that instead, but he said the tuna melt was very good...for a tuna melt lol. I don't like them so I didn't try it. I was told that this family-owned sandwich shop has been around for over 50 years!! I had their meatball sandwich, while my bf got their specialty "submarine". We shared their infamous tomato soup that comes with bread for dipping. Let me just tell ya, the tomato soup was out of this world!! Very friendly staff. I came in here for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon and ordered a tomato garlic bisque and a grilled roast beef sandwich. The roast beef was superb! I don't know what it was, but it was super flavorful without being salty or too moist or too dry. The soup was just okay. I wouldn't consider it to be a bisque, as it had a plethora of veggie chunks on it. It wasn't anything I'd order again. But I'd definitely come back for the sandwiches. read more

It feels like comfort food and really hits the spot on rainy days or cold nights. The sandwiches are perfect. My usual gripe with sandwiches is that they're light on protein and you end up with a mouthful of bread. Not here!
