We've now been here close to 10 times and I have to say they have the best chicken Parm anywhere, hands down. Mark and Liz, the owners, have made it their mission to create a neighborhood gem where you can feel at home and they have seriously accomplished it. We come pretty much weekly. With the warm weather here, don't miss out on their "swirl" two frozen wine drinks combined. Always ask what the chefs choice of the day is, sometimes it's an appetizer, sometimes it's an entree, but it's always good. Good is good. Portions are pretty decent for price. Sat at the bar because even on a Thursday it is crowded. The bread with the artichoke dip is super good. The artichokes in the dip tasted like they have been in a brine for awhile which I've had better. Still decent. I got the spicy shrimp small plate and it is not something I'd typically share. It would be difficult to share due to the grits but I enjoyed it as an entree! The ambiance is pretty relaxed. Something casual. Tried something new with my wife on New Years Day. I was able to make a reservation quite easily on their website. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated outside in the beautiful weather. And then we waited. And waited. We arrived at 1:55 and were waited on at 2:10. They were steady, but I wouldn't say that they were super busy. We were passed a couple of times by servers, and eye contact was made, but nothing was said. Honestly, the only reason this review is a 4 instead of a 2, is because the food was so good. We ordered the burrata and prosciutto appetizer, and it was simply amazing. It came with toast and each bite was magnificent. I would order this again and again. My entree was the fried artichoke sandwich, which was not too breaded and perfectly cooked, with a tangy aioli sauce on it. There was not a crumb left on the place. House chips came as a side, and they were very well made. Honestly, if it wasn't for the seemingly pointless wait when we first sat down, this could've been a 5 star. So happy to have a new neighborhood hangout! We made reservations for a 5 o'clock dinner right when they open and got a seat in one of their spacious booths. The indoor seating is pretty limited, but they also have bar seating and plenty of seating on the patio. We went to Uneeda Sicilian, which occupied the space previously, many times and they have completely transformed the space. There's plenty of natural light for food photos and the space is simply, but elegantly decorated. I had a peek at the menu before we went and I had my heart set on the frozen sangria and chicken parm. I have never had frozen sangria before, and the flavor of it was on point without having to dodge all the chunks of fruit. My bf ordered the cheesesteak, which they are known for, and it was so delicious. I honestly liked it better than my chicken parm! Their homemade cheese whiz really put it over the top. The red sauce on my chicken parm definitely reminded me of the Italian restaurants in Upstate New York, but I like a red sauce with a bit more depth than what I tasted. However, the chicken was perfectly crispy and loaded with melty cheese. The service was very attentive and we never had an empty glass on the table. Next time we go, I have my heart set on the shrimp and polenta appetizer. A great new addition to the North Central neighborhood and they have parking in the gravel lot across the street. Fantastic experience! Small parking lot across the street, otherwise street parking. Lovely patio set up with string lights and heat lamps set a great ambiance throughout the meal. Our server was kind and attentive throughout the entire meal. We started with the goat cheese and prosciutto app, they even had gluten free bread to pair with it! Entrees were all good sizes, and everyone seemed happy with their meals. I had the salmon entree which was loaded with fresh veggies and lots of flavor. The numerous pictures of cheesesteaks is what put Berkeleys on my list of new restaurants to try and it did not disappoint. I got the cheesesteak with house chips and I wouldn't change a thing. A Philly girl knows a Philly cheesesteak and this hit the spot. The meat itself was delicious. My husband got the chicken parm sandwich which was a big sandwich and a house salad. House salad was excellent with their house lemon vinaigrette. Crisp, light and flavorful. The chicken parm sandwich looked better than it tasted to be honest, I think the chicken cutlet needed a bit more of a crisp to it. Didn't hate it but didn't love it. I'm picky but I told James (best bartender in the game) to pick my meal and drink because I know you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. And James pulled through 100000%. Staff is very friendly and gave good recommendations on the menu. We ordered the Caesar salad, chicken parm, and a bottle of wine to split between 3 people. Portions are massive, and they do not hold back on the cheese! Everything was very fresh, delicious, and packed with flavor. Very reasonable prices for Charleston. After trying 4 different places on a Friday night, I am SOOO glad we drove 14 min from the main market area and ate here. Fuc*ing amazing food - I can't even express how delicious it was. I had the Chicken Parmesan, my fiancé had the salmon and he said his was so good he will be telling his niece's grandkids about how awesome it was. The meatball appetizer, chef's special beets, and hummus plate were fantastic as well. Absolutely you MUST eat here when you come to Charleston. A buddy of mine suggested this spot after Xmas and it was a great choice. We started off with the spicy shrimp and the artichoke/kale gratin. The shrimp could've probably been an entree for a single person. Tons of grits and the shrimp have a light kick to them, so nothing too hot. The gratin was delicious and is basically an upscale artichoke dip, but better. I could have probably been happy with 50% more focaccia to go with. For my entree, I had the chicken parmesan. The breading was perfect and the dish is sizable. In retrospect, I probably could have balanced out the grits, gratin, and chicken with some more vegetables, but there aren't a huge number of options outside of salads. That would be my only minor critique. I'd expect diners here to be prepared for $40pp, which might be a little steep for what you get, but the quality and flavors are there. The weakest part of our experience was service was pretty slow, polite, but slow. read more

My friends and I met one of their current chefs, Devon in a parking lot when we first moved here before he started working here and he brought us to Berkeley's. The Frozen Sangria is the best drink there in my opinion, Chef's Choice is always great and is sometimes Devon's own creation (so proud of our son). The Hummus is really great for a small dish, or alternatively the Artichoke & Kale Gratin. I've gotten the Eggplant Parm Cutlet Sandwich, and the Cavatappi as main meals before and they were both delicious. Service is always so friendly and seem happy to be there. This restaurant is still relatively new so it's easy to make a reservation, but hard to show up without one because the wait can be pretty long. read more

Having lived in Charleston for two years now I am constantly amazed at how many wonderful and varied places there are to eat. So today our weekly Charleston lunch took us to Berkeley's. Great outdoor dining space with a bar the leads into a cozy indoor dining area with spacious booths and a bar. We were quickly seated at a booth and served water and asked for our drink order upon being seated. Upon checking the menu we realized that there were a number of things that we really enjoy so we ordered a few things extra knowing we would be taking a good portion home to enjoy later in the day or the next one. So we started out with a Caesar salad which was quite tasty and plentiful for the two of us to share. Even with that we had plenty leftover to take home. We also got the meatballs which were delicious and the sauce was outstanding. These meatballs were just like homemade and so good they didn't make the leftover bag. The special of the day was a chicken cheesesteak a take on a regular cheesesteak which my wife thoroughly enjoyed. Looking for something a bit different I ordered the veggie cheesesteak which was comprised of a variety of mushrooms, onions and homemade cheese whiz. We were told that the whiz was fantastic and that was no lie, it made the sandwich quite special. So the leftovers of the two sandwiches and Caesar salad were enjoyed for dinner so Berkeley's was a double hit with us. My wife and I stopped at Berkeley's for lunch around 1:00 PM on a Friday. We sat at the bar area and had a great server named Lauren. She was very friendly and told us about the specials. We liked the sound of the Toasted Turkey Sandwich with a slice of apple, bacon, arugula, lettuce, tomato and a in-house sauce. She recommended chips that are made in-house and have a seasoning on them. My wife and I both got the special and it was delicious. The sandwich was fresh from the kitchen and the chips we crispy and well seasoned. Lauren was excellent and told us how they are adding a roof over the patio in February and they will be using the gas heaters to allow guests to be comfortable. Seating inside is limited to 3 booths that seat 4-people max and the bar that seats about 10 people. The outside patio is much larger. We are definitely returning to Berkley's to check out the patio with the roof in March '23. read more
