Came here on a Saturday morning with my daughter and it's truly a gem in Gilman, Issaquah! The food is made fresh and everything we tried was delicious. The Turkish latte is an absolute must-try. I loved the chicken shawarma sandwich, the chicken was tender, juicy, and the flavors were perfectly balanced without being overwhelming. My daughter and husband ordered the egg dish with beef bacon and eggs, and it was also excellent. The interior is neat, cozy, and inviting. This is a lovely local spot within Gilman Village! While Berna's is known for their lavish Turkish breakfast spreads, the two of us came for a Sunday lunch at 1:00P. At this time, about half of the indoor seating was available, but we grabbed a table outside on their patio after placing our order at the counter. MANTI PLATE ($27): Tiny homemade dumplings filled with savory beef, served in a thin tomato-based sauce and topped with a creamy garlic yogurt, melted butter and sumac. This was such a comforting dish and actually reminded me of pasta. It is a substantial meal for one, or perfect for sharing! MUHAMMARA ($9): A vibrant mix of red pepper, walnuts, garlic & olive oil that made for a fresh and bold dip! One order included two small pieces of bread, which wasn't nearly enough to finish the dip. They really should provide double the bread. However, the dip was so good that I was eating scoops of it all by itself! DUBAI CHOCOLATE CAKE ($9): A light and airy chocolate cake layered with a rich Dubai chocolate filling, featuring a wonderful crunch from finely chopped pistachios and kunafa. Finished with a decadent chocolate ganache, it was good and not overly sweet! MANGO JELLY ROLL ($7): This was just okay. The pastry was soft inside with a slightly chewy exterior, but it felt a bit too bready and I would have preferred more filling. On that note, the mango jelly inside was actually more like a thin custard and it wasn't as bright and fruity as I had hoped. ICED HOUSE CHANTILLY TEA ($6): I was pleasantly surprised by this! It didn't have a strong tea flavor, but offered a unique, refreshing balance of fruitiness and warm spice unlike any tea I've had before. It was served without ice, a better value for the portion, but reached room temperature quickly on this warm day. Service was friendly, our food was delivered in a timely manner and the staff came by to check on us. I'd consider pricing to be somewhat elevated, but I was happy to support this small local business. The Turkish coffee was very watered down and tasted more like flavored water than coffee. The Dubai Chocolate Cake looked nice, but the cake tasted like a regular supermarket cake. Here's a smoother, casual review that still sounds fair: I had high hopes for this place. The exterior and interior are both adorable and have a really charming vibe. We went about an hour before closing, so unfortunately most of the pastries were already sold out. I ended up trying the Dubai Chocolate Cake and the Turkish coffee. The presentation was super cute, but the food and drinks didn't quite live up to my expectations. My boyfriend loved his Turkish Milk Tea, which he sweetened with sugar. I've tried iced milk tea but I've never had it hot, and the sip I had tasted of his drink was delicious! There's seating outside but if it rains you're SOL because there are no umbrellas to cover the tables. You'd think that the owners would take care of it considering it rains almost all the time. Turkish coffee was a great disappointment. It's my favorite coffee, I make it at home often. It just didn't taste good. Good quality coffee is not supposed to create acidity in your stomach. This coffee did. Service is lacking. I don't care for overly pleasing in your face service, but still appreciate it when the staff is reasonably interested to accommodate. How wonderful to find high-quality authentic Turkish food in the seattle area!! I stopped in on a whim and couldn't have been more pleased. I can't recommend the lentil soup, muhammara, or carrot and garlic appetizer enough! Everything we had here was delicious and we need to go back to try more! The cheesecake was a DREAM and I've told my husband he needs to get me a full Berna's cheesecake for my birthday. My only critique would be to provide guests with a bit more guidance on what each dish includes. For example, I didn't realize the eggs came with bread, so I ordered pastries as well. I was also overcharged -- I paid $33 for two coffees and one pastry, and since they don't provide a receipt, you have no idea what you're actually being charged for. Later, when I ordered another dish, the waitress came over and said she had "just realized" that I had been overcharged earlier because they added a dish that didn't belong to me. She never showed me a receipt, never told me how much I overpaid, and I still have no information about when or if I'll get my refund. Berna's is located in the western most corner of this lovely outdoor shopping experience. Let's just say Berna's caught our eye but mostly our noses!! Being new to Turkish pastries we didn't know quite what to expect. Upon entering we were greeted with warmth and smiles and a glass case filled with an amazing array of sweet and savory pastries!! Too many to mention here. You need to go!! We instantly fell in love with the olive bun. It's subtle and delicious the bun is soft and just perfect.
