Wife and I went there for the first time last night to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary. My wife thought the atmosphere and ambience looked and felt as if it were designed by John Gotti's interior designer. XD I personally thought it was fine. The physical building itself is very unique, very old school... lot's of hidden hallways and tucked away rooms. Almost like a dungeon-exploring adventure (not a bad thing). The food was good. My wife enjoyed the foie gras ($34) tremendously. I enjoyed the lobster bisque (+$11 from included French onion soup with steak) moderately. (had a non-traditional "spice" to it) My wife orders the 8oz filet mignon, and I ordered the 14oz Delmonico (a.k.a. ribeye). The filet was very good, and the Delmonico was good. Neither were out-of-this-world (certainly not enough to warrant the exorbitant price). The baked potato (which mine included butter, cheese, and bacon) had a "bite" to it, something that I did not expect (or enjoy). It might be the butter... they say it was a sweet cream butter, but there was a tartness to it all that was off-putting. I also ordered a thrice-baked potato, just to try it out. It was awful! Bern's has often been rated as the #1 steak house in Tampa, but I just don't get it. Perhaps my unrefined palette is lost on all the Frenchy froo froo stuff. I feel like I could make everything they offered better myself... for a FIFTH of the price. Everything is just so expensive there, and at those prices, I need to feel like it is the best thing I've every had in my life. It was far from this. Additionally, the time it took was very long. I get it, this is a multi-course situation, and you're supposed to take your time and not be rushed. But I personally don't generally take 90 minutes from start to finish to each my food.... I'm just not that guy. The atmosphere and intimacy were great for special occasions, but all in all, I don't think we will be going back, ever. read more

I drove 2 hours for a reservation o booked for my wife 2 months in advance. The evening started very well. Our waiter was very kind and attentive until a party of ten showed up. Someone we had never seen during our time at the restaurant delivered our food both of our steaks were raw (bloody) and we did not get our baked potatoes. We sat for 20 minutes. No one came to check on our food or experience since the meals were delivered. For as expensive as our meal was, it was definitely not worth it to me. The staff is so knowledgeable, as their training is extensiveeee, so you will not be disappointed. Besides the food and service, this is truly an experience, not just a meal. Nine years since my review and Bern's still serves my favorite filet mignon in Tampa. I've been several more times and all were perfect dining experiences. I'll admit that I almost always order the same meal and have slept on their newer menu additions. Not much has changed except the lounge was renovated with a modern aesthetic. For me, Bern's Steak House was the best steak house experience out of all the steak spots in Florida. We had zero knowledge and expectations going in, and only afterwards did we find out this place was fine dining (we were under dressed), requires 2 weeks ahead reservation (hard to get in), and offered wine cellar and back of the house (kitchen) tour. The first impression entering the restaurant was that it was packed with formally dressed people. Bern's steakhouse had second floor and a separate dessert area but in the beginning, it was chaotic with many people bustling in different directions. We were finally seated at the booth near the bar area and it was cozy. This was our first time here so we ordered some recommended cocktails, wines, appetizers, and our main entrees. The service was efficient and professional. There will definitely be a next time and when that time comes we will be skipping 2-3 appetizers because the entrees come with soup, salad, greens, and fried onion rings along with your choice of protein. The prices can be seen a bit high at first but once you see, taste, and feel after the dining experience, you will agree that the price is worth every bit. Every dish was delicious and just right, in presentation, to portion, to flavors. The appetizers definitely worked up our appetite. The soup was delicious. The salads fresh tasting with the vegetables fresh and crisp. The entrees were cooked to their perfection and they could not come out more perfect than this. I've lived in Tampa for the past 4 years and I finally tried out the famous Bern's to celebrate match day with my family. You have to focus on scheduling a reservation exactly 60 days in advance because they book up quickly! Huge shoutout to our server Tracy. She made our night feel special with her humor, restaurant knowledge and attentive service! We started with a bottle of prosecco to celebrate, and then the Resonance Pinot noir - delicious! In terms of food, I recommend just ordering one of their steaks since it automatically comes with French onion soup, side salad, baked potato and onion rings. We were so full by the end we're glad we didn't get any apps. The NY strip was to die for - cooked perfectly at medium rare. Onion rings were thin, crispy and perfectly seasoned. What a fantastic experience at Bern's this weekend. I had heard so many amazing things about the place, but I really only did about 50% of what is probably the appropriate amount of research so... I didn't realize until the morning I planned to go that they weren't open until 5. I also had no clue that there is usually a lineup of people waiting to get in as early as 4pm. I knew we were unlikely to get into the main restaurant but didn't know how the whole lounge seating thing worked or that the valet was required (unless you somehow manage to find street parking but that's largely non-existent so... ok) Anyway, arrived right after 5pm on Saturday after lots of on and off rain - which I was also hoping might scare people away? Who was I kidding - and even getting into the valet line was a struggle but we worked it out. Our valet attendant didn't seem convinced we would be able to be seated but as luck would have it, walked in and after checking in at the welcome stand we were seated in the lounge in about 7 minutes. Success! From there, things only got better. Our lounge server was Abdul and he was PHENOMENAL. Mom ordered the filet and I got the chateaubriand tips. The soup and salad were almost enough that we didn't need the entree but that entree. Wow. The steak was worth all fuss, sides were also terrific and we scored a nice portion to take home for leftovers. This was meant to be an early Mother's Day dinner, and I expect well plan the same for next year and by that I mean actually work on getting a reservation so the whole winging it thing doesn't have to happen. 10 stars and worth the trip! read more

Why. Do. People. Eat. Here. We have lived in Tampa for 10 years. We went to Bern's for our wedding anniversary thinking it would be an experience and a great way to celebrate. Pros: the service is outstanding. Everyone seemed to recognize our anniversary and the customer definitely came first. The hosts at the front door and the dessert room were wonderful. Both servers were excellent, and the bartender recommended a wonderful bottle of wine. Cons: the food, the vibe, the smell, the entire decor, and again the food. As we walked in the whole restaurant smelled awful, and it was every room we walked through. The restaurant is dimly lit which is nice for dinner but gaudy doesn't even describe the decor. For dinner, we started w the truffle steak tartare which was so dry and lacking in flavor that we didn't even want to finish it. Easily the worst tartare we have had. Then we moved on to soups. My husband had the French onion which he described as "decent" I had the lobster bisque which had a great broth but an unnecessary clump of bacon in the middle. The Caesar salad was actually inedible. Soggy brown lettuce drowning in a dressing that tasted like Italian and Caesar dressing mixed together. Shocking considering a decent salad is a pretty easy mark. The only redeeming quality of the entire meal was the Wagyu tomahawk. It was well seasoned and prepared correctly, but certainly not the best steak I've had in Tampa. After dinner we went up to the infamous dessert room which again had great service but lackluster everything else. The piano player which is the niche experience-played maybe 3 songs the entire time and the vintage chocolate "lush" sundae was basically just a super dry brownie w vanilla ice cream. I will reiterate the service was out of this world but the food was less than mediocre. There are so many better restaurants in Tampa I cannot see the appeal of eating here at all. read more

This was our 2nd time at Berns the first time we tried the dessert room only, which was great. We went back recently for my Husbands birthday and they did not disappoint. The overall vibe and theme of the restaurant is beautiful. We started with cocktails. I cannot remember the name of my drink but the spirit was Gin and it was raspberry flavor. My husband ordered the old fashion, both were very well made and delicious. Our server mentioned an oyster rockerfeller dish that they had as a special, so thats what we did for our appetizer. We weren't fans of the oysters, they were fresh but we did not like the flavor. We both ordered the 14oz Dry aged Delmonico. Each steak entree came with French onion soup, house salad, baked potato, their vegetable of the day( which was green beans) & what's advertised as onion rings but where I'm from they are onion strings, as onion rings are thicker (either way they were so good). There's options to sub the soup, I got the lobster bisque ( no bacon) which was an $11 upcharge, my husband stuck with the French onion. Both of the soups were flavorful. The bisque was heavier and I probably would've been full if I finished it so I didn't. We subbed the house salads for caesar salads which I believe was a $1 upcharge. I got the baked potato minus the bacon my husband got the loaded baker, I can't remember what the upcharge was for that. The sides were all good and well prepared. Now the steaks! Honestly by the time our entrees came we were close to full from everything before. We honestly probably could've split one 18oz Delmonico but we're greedy. I asked for medium well, our server talked me into a medium plus if I wanted a little pink. The overall steak was cooked perfectly but the filet was more medium if not a little under, so I took that part home. My husband ordered his medium and it was cooked perfectly. I had heard about Bern's for the past 30 years and finally made a reservation. They sell out 60 days in advance for anything from 6pm to 8pm however they will almost always have a few cancellations 24 hours prior to whatever date you are looking for. The building is old and feels like a warehouse with weird continuity. They ask if you are celebrating a special occasion when you reserve a spot and I imagine they seat you based on that information. I was hosting a business dinner and so the room that we were in wasn't very warm or comfortable. The server was great and knowledgeable. The appetizers were 5 star - escargot and Wagyu wrapped with Ahi topped with Caviar. The steaks were perfectly cooked and superb. Three of us went to Bern's for dinner on the first night of visiting Tampa. One of us had been there previously, so he knew the process. It was a process without reservations. Bern's opens at 5 PM; you have to get there early. We got there at 4:30 and had 6 people ahead of us. By 5 PM, the line was very long. When the doors opened, we went in, and to the right is the bar area. It is a lovely atmosphere with a large, comfortable bar. There are also tables if you are so inclined. The bar itself is first-come, first-served, and my friend said it is more casual than the dining room, which requires a collared shirt and shoes. We got three seats at the center of the bar and were greeted by a very nice barmaid who made us feel at home. The bar menu is the same as in the dining room. The selection of wine and cocktails is stellar. I had a black Manhattan, and it was made perfectly. We started with grilled octopus and baked oysters with spinach and cheese. Everything was perfectly prepared. We followed up with steaks, of course. I had the Delmonico, and my friends each had the filet. You get a salad and a small cup of excellent French onion soup with the entrees. You also get 2 sides with the steaks. I skipped the potato and had some sauteed broccolini with my steak. The steaks were perfectly prepared and were as flavorful as any I have had in other high-end steakhouses. We had a bottle of good Cabernet to go with it. All in all, it was fabulous. However, that wasn't all. My friend made a reservation in the dessert area upstairs, where we enjoyed some coffee with their flan and bananas foster, which was prepared tableside. The show was great, and the desserts were fantastic. It is not an inexpensive place, so be prepared. The experience is fantastic. It is worth every penny. Bar none, this is the best steakhouse in the country if you have food allergies and if you dont it's still top shelf. The level of care and adaptability they showed was extraordinary. It's honestly astonishing that a 350‑seat restaurant can be so responsive and precise. I made a reservation for tonight after Bern's reopened from being closed for Gasparilla, and this visit had been a long time coming. We've heard about Bern's for YEARS from some of our closest friends in the Tampa area, so we were genuinely excited to finally experience it. I also noted in our reservation that it was our first time dining at Bern's and how excited we were. We arrived on time and were seated within just a few minutes, which was great. The food itself was excellent--truly deserving of the reputation. Unfortunately, the experience with the service was not memorable. We are easy guests and truly don't need much, but knowing that Bern's servers go through extensive training for years, it's hard to understand why we didn't receive the same level of service as the tables around us. Our server, Mark, felt very transactional from the start. He immediately asked what we wanted to drink without offering any introduction, history of the room, or a rundown of the menu--something we noticed every surrounding table received. He asked whose birthday it was (it was my fiancé's), but that acknowledgment never translated into the experience. We ordered a bottle of French Barolo wine. I had one glass and later asked for a New York Sour, which unfortunately never arrived. Our glasses were not pre-bussed, and I was never checked on or asked if I wanted another drink after I had been drinking water for about an hour. Additionally, every table around us received complimentary birthday desserts before being asked if they wanted to visit the dessert room--my fiancé never received one..... It truly felt like we were being left out of the experience, and we left wanting more of what everyone else around us seemed to receive. I would still recommend Bern's because the food was truly delicious, but our overall experience felt underwhelming given the level of service we observed at surrounding tables and the reputation Bern's holds. Ordered the 10 ounce dry aged NY strip that was cooked a perfect medium rare and topped with a garlic sauce. Unlike most other steakhouses that charge à la carte the soup, salad and vegetables (including baked potato) are included with the cost of your steak which provides a good value. Made it back to Bern's last night. It's always such a wonderful experience. This time was no different. We were warmly greeted by Matt and he brought some waters and assisted with the wine selection. We settled on a few glasses of Pinot from the Russian Valley within the Willamette Valley, OR. Superb! From there we made our dinner selections. Our table enjoyed a round of 10oz filets with add on scallops. We also enjoyed the Sea Bass with pumpkin ravioli. Wow, was that dish amazing. On our way up to the dessert room, we received a kitchen walk-thru and wine cellar tour. Both are highly recommended. Here were some highlights. Each evening: 300lbs of charcoal is used to cook the steaks; over 800 salads are prepared; 1k drink orders filled; 1k pounds of steak; 150k bottles of Wine in the cellar, $49k is the most expensive and only 5 were made in the world and it is served in a large, fancy crystal vase; cellar is kept at 50 degrees and the high end bottles are stored in plastic to help preserve the labels. This was my second time at Bern's but my first time as an adult, and man was this a cool experience! I came with my family to celebrate my graduate school graduation and it is definitely a great place for a celebration! The inside has a wonderful theme and the coolest decor. The service is excellent all the way around, from the hosts, to the wait staff, to the tour guides, to the kitchen staff during the tour, everyone is so friendly and helpful! The food of course is amazing as well! While it is quite expensive, you get a lot of food for the price and I honestly think it's a good value! Everything is high quality, the steak was cooked to perfection, and even the salad dressings are made in house. I tried the macadamia vanilla bean dressing because it sounded so unique, and it was delicious. The dessert room is of course a non-negotiable as well. I got the macadamia nut sundae, and I'm so glad I did. That macadamia ice cream is so tasty and creamy, and the hot fudge is to die for. Fantastic experience; the service was great, the atmosphere was great and the food was great. Me and my husband each got the filet mignon with the baked potato side and green beans, French onion soup, a Caesar salad and a wedge salad and everything was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. We ordered several cocktails and they were very good as well. The desert room was as amazing as everyone talks about, the flourless chocolate cake and banana split were soooooo good. I also got a brandy alexander in the desert room and to my surprise it was mixed perfectly, I've had very few of those drinks that were actually good since they don't seem very common and few bartenders know how to mix them, but they are one of my all time favorites! We definitely recommend this restaurant so anyone looking for an upscale meal but also be ready for a very large price tag. The best experience! I booked 60 days before the date on OpenTable. If you want a good time on the weekend I highly recommend you make a reservation. Your dinner reservation will also include the kitchen and wine cellar tour. And most importantly the dessert room which we will come back to later. The bar is also open so you can grab a drink before dinner or you are by yourself and can dine there. Started with an old fashioned it was pretty good. We were seated before our reservation time. Our waiter was great! We ordered a couple of bottles of wine. We decided against ordering any appetizer since we wanted to leave room for the dessert. For my main I got the dry aged delmonico, med rare is wha is recommended. With the order of the steak you also get onion soup, a salad, potatoes, greens and onion strings. Steak was cooked perfectly and it was so delicious. After dinner we got a tour of the kitchen and the wine cellar (biggest private collection in the world). Then we went upstairs to the dessert room. I got a glass of sparking rose, a double espresso and the macadamia nut sundae. What a perfect experience. Highly recommend! read more

Bern's Steakhouse provided the most unique dinner experience I've ever had-- in the best way possible. I was in town for a month and made sure to book a reservation well in advance because it was a restaurant I wanted to try since I initially heard about it 5 years ago. It did not disappoint whatsoever. The vibe inside is like walking through an amusement park. Not tacky at all, just unlike anything I've seen before. They take you on a tour after your meal and the layout makes much more sense after they explain how it came to be. I give the ambiance a 10/10. I LOVED the "taste of Bern's" steak sampler. All the sides and appetizers it came with were outstanding. Nothing is overly complex, just very simple dishes executed extremely well. This place loves their wine and offers a million options, even by the glass. I just asked our server to get me a cheap glass of red to go with my steak and I loved it. I also had a perfect old fashioned. The service was top tier. Our waiter was extremely professional, and made us feel right at home from the jump. Our table of 7 wanted him to pull up a chair and join us for dinner but he politely declined. After dinner and the tour, we went upstairs to the dessert room and enjoyed a completely different experience. New table, new vibe, new server. You can request any kind of music that gets played specifically for your party. The tables are very secluded and intimate. Every dessert ordered at the table was spectacular, and I tried them all. And the cappuccino was UNREAL. We were at Bern's for a total of 4 hours. We left the restaurant at 1 AM on a Monday. I think we were the last table to leave and never once felt rushed. I consider Bern's to be one of the most memorable dining experiences I've ever had. A Florida fine dining establishment: delicious food, a large bill, gauche service, and an ostentatious yet fun atmosphere. Famous for its wine collection, multi-stage dining experience, and dry-aged steaks, dining at Bern's is an experience. The delmonico (ribeye) is cooked to the perfect temperature, properly rested, and has a nice crust. They use a charcoal grill, but the charcoal flavor is very subtle. The onion strings are exceptional: fluffy, crunchy exterior, soft interior, and flavorful. The French onion soup is outstanding- I wish I had more of it. The caesar salad is excellent. Creamed spinach is a delicious garlicky accompaniment to your steak. The blanched green beans are bland and the baked potato has too much sour cream to enjoy. The wine is exceptional and worth going with the server's pairing recommendation. The restaurant is large and over the top. Its walls are decorated with kitschy and tacky flair, such as a room whose walls are dotted with sculptures each lit by a spotlight. The wallpaper is dated. Each room has multiple bussing stations within seating areas so if you are unlucky you will be sitting next to piles of dirty dishes while tables are cleared. A true Florida fine dining establishment, there is no enforced dress code: you will see jeans, t-shirts, and the occasional suit jacket draped over the back of a chair. Bern's is proud of how it requires front house staff to train for a year before serving tables. The maître d' is not particularly friendly. The servers are polite, charismatic, and knowledgeable. They do not offer to let you taste the wine they recommend. When I asked to move tables, because I did not want to sit next to a bussing station and watch dirty plates getting stacked all night, our server said "this is where we work". He reluctantly offered another table next to a bussing station, and I had to specifically point out a better table. He resumed his professional demeanor after that, but the departure from class left its impression. The restaurant offers a tour of their kitchen and wine cellar. This tour is not worth it. If you have ever been in a world-class wine cellar, this is nowhere near as striking. You will stand in a narrow walkway, see a few shelves of wine, and look at a ridiculously large decanter and bottle they won't open until 2062 (by which time it will have probably spoiled). And that's it for the wine tour. The kitchen is like any other professional kitchen. You eat dessert upstairs. We were seated in a nice red room around a pianist - excellent atmosphere. The dessert service was friendly and professional. My grasshopper was what a grasshopper should be. The baked Alaska was striking in appearance (who doesn't love a flambé?) and tasty, although it would have been better with a different flavor of ice cream such as vanilla, and I don't think the alcohol burned long enough. I enjoyed the dessert experience. A fine dining restaurant must meet exacting standards, and this does not. Luxury lies in the details, and the details here are lost. By setting the bar high, Bern's renders its failure to match pretentious. Nonetheless, it is a fun environment, and the food and drinks are amazing. read more

So I'm going to keep this review simple... Excellent. I'm not going to delve into every little nook and cranny about this restaurant... If you're seeing this review you already know the facts -- This is a gorgeous restaurant, best service in town, you have to wait months to get a reservation at a normal time, and if you don't go to the desert room you're missing out. Even though... My desert room experience this time wasn't so great -- I think we just got a bad seating. Now for what I really want to talk about... Get the Wagyu. For as expensive as this cut of meat is everywhere else in town... It's the best bargain at Berns Steakhouse. A similar cut at most of the other restaurants in town is close to double the price compared to Berns. It's not cheap... But this is the cheapest and best in town. You can get a regular filet and/or ribeye anywhere else in town... Next time you go to Berns get the Wagyu. It was fantastic. Plus, with the complementary side, bread, soup... It's an even better value. Most of the other big steakhouses in town sell you everything à la carte. Berns is fantastic. read more

We really enjoyed our evening at Bern's. We made a reservation in January for March, so they definitely book out & I totally understand why. First, the building itself is eclectic and rooted in so much history. You're seated in one of several different rooms & the waitstaff is so well trained. My husband and I split a 10oz filet meal because it comes with a lot of food (steak, baked potato, veggie, onion straws and a decent sized salad) and i wanted to save room for desert. Your waiter/tress should ask you if you want a tour and a reservation for the desert room - if they forget to say something, make sure you do because it's worth it. The Banana Cheese Pie is to die for, as is the cheesecake. We wouldn't have found ourselves here if not for a gift card we received at Christmas but will definitely be back for special occasions (she's pricey). The only downfalls were that there isn't much room to move around when you're walking from room to room, it is a very bustling restaurant & it you get whiffs of something funky, like dirty laundry, every now and then. My husband and I planned a weekend trip from Daytona to Tampa specifically to try Bern's after hearing so many glowing reviews from friends and social media. The interior is certainly unique and you can tell it once had a "wow" factor, but much of it feels dated now, with worn chairs, faded décor, and crowded, noisy dining rooms. The lobby was chaotic upon arrival with no clear direction on where to go, and the host stand felt rushed and unfriendly. The pre-table drink service in the lobby was a nice idea in theory, but difficult to navigate while standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other guests. We were seated in a loud room next to the bathroom with a large mural that looked faded. Our server, Harrison, unfortunately offered service that did not match the reputation or price point of this restaurant. He barely stopped at the table, never checked our steaks for temperature, and we had to flag him down multiple times for refills or additional drinks. There was little warmth or conversation, no check-in about how we were enjoying our meal, and no clearing of plates--even though we saw other servers doing so at nearby tables. For a restaurant that claims extensive staff training, this felt like a major miss. The steaks themselves were also underwhelming. My Chateaubriand was tough and looked like an end cut, and my husband's Delmonico was extremely fatty. The included sides (onion strings, green beans, French onion soup, and the house salad) felt more like something from a diner than a high-end steakhouse. The upgraded lobster bisque and Caesar salad were just okay, and the house salad tasted limp and far from fresh. The oysters and stone crab were excellent, however, and the dessert room was genuinely enjoyable. Our dessert-room server was warm, knowledgeable, and made that portion of the night feel special. The cost is also important to mention. Dinner alone was $500, which already included the restaurant's mandatory 12% server tip. The dessert room added another $100, making our total for the night roughly $600. For that price, the food quality and service fell far short of expectations. I would have shared my concerns with management, but no manager ever came by to check on tables. While Bern's has an interesting history and the dessert room is worth experiencing once, the rest of the evening didn't reflect the reputation or the high-end pricing. We actually made reservations at Bull & Bear in Orlando while dining because we wanted a guaranteed great steakhouse experience the following weekend. For us, Bern's was overhyped, and we wouldn't return based on this visit. read more

We were very excited to try this place and loved the history, but sadly it did not live up to our expectations. We arrived early and had a cocktail at the bar. It was standing room only and people were constantly arriving. We were seated exactly at our reservation time and given menus. Our server explained everything since this was our first time here. For starters we ordered two appetizers, the carpaccio and the homemade chips and dip. Both were excellent! For dinner I had the 8 oz. Fillet and my husband had the Delmonico. He loved his steak but I did not like mine. It was very dry. I know fillets do not have a lot of fat on them but I have never had one taste this dry before. The salads were good, but we thought the ranch dressing had an odd taste and the onion rings were more like onion straws and were super salty. They also brought out a plate of mini toast which we didn't like either. To celebrate, I ordered a glass of Cabernet. For $54.00 a glass, it was the saddest pour. After two hours of dining, we decided to skip the dessert room and the tour. The decor is interesting but very outdated except for the lounge area. It was dark and had no windows. The service was excellent. However, the fillet, onion rings and the toast missed the mark. It seems not only the decor, but the accompaniments could use an update as well. We don't mind spending money on a good meal, but we definitely did not feel like we got our money's worth here with the food or our drinks. Plus the added service fee? We want to come try it again but not so late next time, and perhaps sit in the lounge area. read more
