I love how knowledgeable our waitress was and the "happy anniversary" card on the table was a cute personal touch. I will also say that I love how this steakhouse includes sides with the price of the steak. The only thing I found slightly disappointing was the steak itself. It wasn't a bad steak but it certainly isn't amongst the best in the Tampa area. First time at Bern's was a wonderful experience. They were able to accommodate our change in reservation. It is a very unique dining experience. Our meals were delicious. Bern's Steakhouse has 5 Star Food but overall dining experience was extremely disappointing due to very poor total combined service (dinner & dessert room) that only rated 1-star. No matter how good the food is--if you are paying $150-$200+ per person for dinner, drinks, dessert-- you should expect at least 4.5 stars experience in both food AND service. This was my wife and I's 1st experience at Bern's after living here in the Tampa area for the last 2 years after moving here from Atlanta. One of our other high-end dining experiences here was at Ocean Prime where again you pay $150 to $200+ per person but the difference is at Ocean Prime both the Food & Service were high-end & both between 4.5 to 5 stars. For our dinner tonight at Bern's we started off by each having a glass of the Mollydooker 2023, 'the Maitre D', Cabernet, Mclaren Vale, Australia. My wife ordered the 8oz Filet and I ordered the 16oz Strip. We also ordered the mushrooms as a side & each of us had the standard french onion soup, and we both had the house salad with the Macadamia Vanilla Bean Vinaigrette. The wine came out fine and the timing on the soup and salad were fine, but after finishing our salads there was about a 45 to 50 min gap waiting for our dinner which is unacceptable. There was no recognition of the extended delay by the server or floor mgr in the meantime - nor was one offered when the dinner eventually came. Before we came here tonight we watched videos online about the history of Bern's & the fact that Bern's takes the service aspect of the experience so seriously that people have to train for a year before being allowed to work as servers. That means they supposedly take process of customer satisfaction and service quality very seriously. Part of the process & training should be for the staff and managers to automatically recognize when there is an unacceptable delay in getting food out in a timely orderly fashion-especially the main course. Mistakes and delays happen-- that is just part an unavoidable part of the restaurant business--however-- when there are delays or mistakes made the difference between a 5-star restaurant that charges an average of $150 to $200 per person & a 2 to 3 star restaurant is how they recognize, react to, and handle mistakes or delays-- and how they demonstrate to the customer that they recognize that there is a delay or problem and that they care & what will be done to rectify it. Ok so--now on to the dessert room--this is where the service completely fell apart. We were seated with a few minutes upon arriving at the dessert room which is good. Our server came shortly thereafter to take our drink order. We each ordered a coffee drink. My wife ordered a decaf iced Cafe Con Leche and I ordered a regular hot (caffeinated) 'Cafe Con Leche - the server spend another minute or 2 re-confirming the correct coffee drink order with us by repeating it back just to make sure she had everything correct--which is good. she then left to put that order in and said she would come back to take our dessert order once we had made up our mind what we wanted to have. So about 5 to 6 minutes later she came back--no coffee drinks yet but she took our dessert order & we ordered the Salted Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding brioche, chocolate crème anglaise, and based on her recommendation, we substituted the black walnut ice cream for the Graham cracker ice cream-- so that also was good. The dessert arrived about 10 to 15 minutes later--still no coffee drinks. We waited about 5 minutes before starting to eat dessert as we thought (even though she did not say anything about our drinks) we thought she was going back to now bring us our coffee drinks right away to have with our dessert as now it had been almost 25-30 min since ordering our coffee drinks--still nothing. We started to eat our dessert now just thinking we are not going to get our coffee as the ice cream was melting & we wanted to at least enjoy our dessert with the ice cream. About 10 minutes later we had finish about 3/4ths of our dessert & she came back to check to see how we liked the dessert & I told her it was great but asked her what happened to our coffee drinks? She had a puzzled expression on her face like "You ordered coffee drinks?" then opened up the ticket to see that we did. No apology--no offer to do anything about the mistake. The coffee drinks finally came about 6 or 7 minutes later --at that time dessert was through--so that kind of ended the evening on a very sour note. When she brought the bill--there was no apology about the coffee drinks & there was no offer to do anything on the bill. The dessert and coffee drinks were both great-- but the service was poor & there was no recognition or apology nor any offer to rectify it. What a way to spend an evening! We arrived and valet was very friendly greeting. We walked in and quickly was sat. Our server Mark was amazing. He walked us through the menus. He asked if we had been there before. Since we had not he signed us up for a kitchen tour and wine cellar walk before going to the dessert bar. Being our first time we did the steak meal option. We ordered a filet and a strip. They were cooked perfectly. The salad dressings are all made on property and made us already talking about when we are coming back to try other flavors. I thought dinner could not get better, but then we went to the dessert bar. So it was definitely unique and worth the over 400$ bill I just wish they would explain what their "service fee is" and when you order waygu- don't send out a regular filet to a person, who is a chef. It's insulting and really not what a company should do. Again, we were the last guests of the night we booked late on purpose, and start to finish this place was fascinating. My wife and I came here for our second anniversary and what can I say, Berns it's an incredible experience. Probably one of the best steakhouse experiences I have ever had, rivaling House of Prime Rib in San Francisco. The inside is very unique, there are 8 different dining rooms (and I think the lounge additionally?), each with their own theme, decor, and differing amount of tables. We were seated in the original room with many different works of art layering the walls, which was fun to look at during breaks in conversations. Our server Di was great, knowledgeable and helpful, she gave us great recommendations. Afterwards she asked if we wanted to join for a quick tour of the kitchen, which is where she explained the history of the room we ate in (which was the original room where the kitchen and 8 tables used to be). The kitchen tour is a must also, to see their giant grill, the servers running around, it's a sight to behold. For dinner we didn't stray too far and just got the steaks and the accompaniments. We started with the french onion soup, I upgraded mine to the lobster bisque, which our server brought out deconstructed to allow the lobster to show before the bisque was added. Definitely my favorite lobster bisque I've had, very flavorful. But had to be careful not to get completely filled up on it. Next was the house salad, which was ok, nothing too special, but you have multiple options for the sauce and were very tasty. My wife got the fillet and I got the rib-eye, each came with onion strings and vegetable of the day (unless changed). Both steaks were incredible, cooked very nicely and were very flavorful with seasoning and the char from the charcoal grill. I also got a side of bone marrow which was moreso just a try for me, I'm not typically a fan, but enjoyed it none-the-less. For drinks my wife had a glass of wine from there extensive collection - I've heard they have thousands of bottles and their wine book with somewhere close to 50 pages definitely confirmed that - and I had the Bern's old fashioned. The wine was very good, while the old fashioned was alright. One of the coolest parts of the night was that near the end of our dinner the server asked if we wanted to go to the dessert room (upstairs), which we accepted. The dessert room is essentially an entire different restaurant with different small booth rooms for your table to sit in with access to change the music to a few different options. The dessert menu had some amazing items on it; of which we were informed is all made in house. Having a sweet tooth and being our anniversary, we got two desserts, the peanut butter truffle and the king midas. Both were some of the best tasting desserts we've ever had, though we were struggling to finish them because of the large meal we had just ate. We also got espresso which was very good as well. For me, Bern's Steak House was the best steak house experience out of all the steak spots in Florida. We had zero knowledge and expectations going in, and only afterwards did we find out this place was fine dining (we were under dressed), requires 2 weeks ahead reservation (hard to get in), and offered wine cellar and back of the house (kitchen) tour. The first impression entering the restaurant was that it was packed with formally dressed people. Bern's steakhouse had second floor and a separate dessert area but in the beginning, it was chaotic with many people bustling in different directions. We were finally seated at the booth near the bar area and it was cozy. This was our first time here so we ordered some recommended cocktails, wines, appetizers, and our main entrees. The service was efficient and professional. There will definitely be a next time and when that time comes we will be skipping 2-3 appetizers because the entrees come with soup, salad, greens, and fried onion rings along with your choice of protein. The prices can be seen a bit high at first but once you see, taste, and feel after the dining experience, you will agree that the price is worth every bit. Every dish was delicious and just right, in presentation, to portion, to flavors. The appetizers definitely worked up our appetite. The soup was delicious. The salads fresh tasting with the vegetables fresh and crisp. The entrees were cooked to their perfection and they could not come out more perfect than this. I've lived in Tampa for the past 4 years and I finally tried out the famous Bern's to celebrate match day with my family. You have to focus on scheduling a reservation exactly 60 days in advance because they book up quickly! Huge shoutout to our server Tracy. She made our night feel special with her humor, restaurant knowledge and attentive service! We started with a bottle of prosecco to celebrate, and then the Resonance Pinot noir - delicious! In terms of food, I recommend just ordering one of their steaks since it automatically comes with French onion soup, side salad, baked potato and onion rings. Someone we had never seen during our time at the restaurant delivered our food both of our steaks were raw (bloody) and we did not get our baked potatoes. We sat for 20 minutes. No one came to check on our food or experience since the meals were delivered. For as expensive as our meal was, it was definitely not worth it to me. Went there with friends for my birthday. It's an old building with no windows. Been around since 1956 and when you walk in it's dark and old pictures on the wall and unique design. They have various dining rooms. When you look at the prices of steak don't freak out. I got the 10oz filet mignon at $72. Includes French onion soup, house salad, baked potato, veggie of the day and straw onion rings. So the price is decent. You can old to other places that charge you for each item and wind up being $112. The filet, it was the best filet I have had. They dont season it and the meat spoke for it self. I don't like French onion soup but tried the broth and it was good. Everyone at the table loved it. House salad I got with French dressing and it was a decent salad. Veggie of the day was green beans, they give you a decent portion of onion ring but I gave mine away since I hate onions. The baked potato was regular size and had butter and bacon on it. I also ordered cream corn which I enjoyed. My only issue with the food was the side asparagus my friend ordered was over cooked but she liked it that was. Also side ordered was mashed potato and bone marrow. It was very good. One upgraded her soup to the lobster bisque and she enjoyed it. Service was great server was on his game. Why. Do. People. Eat. Here. We have lived in Tampa for 10 years. We went to Bern's for our wedding anniversary thinking it would be an experience and a great way to celebrate. Pros: the service is outstanding. Everyone seemed to recognize our anniversary and the customer definitely came first. The hosts at the front door and the dessert room were wonderful. Both servers were excellent, and the bartender recommended a wonderful bottle of wine. Cons: the food, the vibe, the smell, the entire decor, and again the food. As we walked in the whole restaurant smelled awful, and it was every room we walked through. The restaurant is dimly lit which is nice for dinner but gaudy doesn't even describe the decor. For dinner, we started w the truffle steak tartare which was so dry and lacking in flavor that we didn't even want to finish it. Easily the worst tartare we have had. Then we moved on to soups. My husband had the French onion which he described as "decent" I had the lobster bisque which had a great broth but an unnecessary clump of bacon in the middle. The Caesar salad was actually inedible. Soggy brown lettuce drowning in a dressing that tasted like Italian and Caesar dressing mixed together. Shocking considering a decent salad is a pretty easy mark. The only redeeming quality of the entire meal was the Wagyu tomahawk. It was well seasoned and prepared correctly, but certainly not the best steak I've had in Tampa. After dinner we went up to the infamous dessert room which again had great service but lackluster everything else. The piano player which is the niche experience-played maybe 3 songs the entire time and the vintage chocolate "lush" sundae was basically just a super dry brownie w vanilla ice cream. I will reiterate the service was out of this world but the food was less than mediocre. There are so many better restaurants in Tampa I cannot see the appeal of eating here at all. read more

Nine years since my review and Bern's still serves my favorite filet mignon in Tampa. I've been several more times and all were perfect dining experiences. I'll admit that I almost always order the same meal and have slept on their newer menu additions. Not much has changed except the lounge was renovated with a modern aesthetic. Every other room remains ornate and reminiscent of a creepy old mansion. Temps inside vary from hot/humid to comfortable to freezing cold wine cellar. Three of us went to Bern's for dinner on the first night of visiting Tampa. One of us had been there previously, so he knew the process. It was a process without reservations. Bern's opens at 5 PM; you have to get there early. We got there at 4:30 and had 6 people ahead of us. By 5 PM, the line was very long. When the doors opened, we went in, and to the right is the bar area. It is a lovely atmosphere with a large, comfortable bar. There are also tables if you are so inclined. The bar itself is first-come, first-served, and my friend said it is more casual than the dining room, which requires a collared shirt and shoes. We got three seats at the center of the bar and were greeted by a very nice barmaid who made us feel at home. The bar menu is the same as in the dining room. The selection of wine and cocktails is stellar. I had a black Manhattan, and it was made perfectly. We started with grilled octopus and baked oysters with spinach and cheese. Everything was perfectly prepared. We followed up with steaks, of course. I had the Delmonico, and my friends each had the filet. You get a salad and a small cup of excellent French onion soup with the entrees. You also get 2 sides with the steaks. I skipped the potato and had some sauteed broccolini with my steak. The steaks were perfectly prepared and were as flavorful as any I have had in other high-end steakhouses. We had a bottle of good Cabernet to go with it. All in all, it was fabulous. However, that wasn't all. My friend made a reservation in the dessert area upstairs, where we enjoyed some coffee with their flan and bananas foster, which was prepared tableside. The show was great, and the desserts were fantastic. It is not an inexpensive place, so be prepared. The experience is fantastic. It is worth every penny. Bar none, this is the best steakhouse in the country if you have food allergies and if you dont it's still top shelf. The level of care and adaptability they showed was extraordinary. It's honestly astonishing that a 350‑seat restaurant can be so responsive and precise. My daughter was able to safely enjoy foods she hasn't been able to eat in years, and that alone made the night unforgettable. We started with the scallops, which were perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. I ordered the Taste of Bern's steak, which includes 4 oz of each steak on the menu--an experience in itself. Other members of my family had the filet mignon and the Delmonico, both cooked beautifully. My wife ordered the grouper, and it was so flavorful and tender that she's still talking about it. The service is on another level. The waiters truly cater to you, and the wine list is nothing short of legendary. The only thing I'm bummed about is that we were too full to make it to the dessert room. Next time, that's happening. Always an amazing experience at this Tampa classic! I haven't been to Berns in a few years so it was nice to be back! Loved the steak and lobster, and of course I loved the French Onion soup even more. The FO soup is to die for!!! Might be the best I've ever had! Service is impeccable as well. They are super on top of everything, they don't play any games. Steak cooked perfect and all the steaks are served with some crispy onions and green beans. You don't need that much else unless you are very hungry. We did add half lobster and a cheese board appetizer. You have to save room for dessert too! They have a whole upstairs dedicated to just dessert. They have decadent after dinner cocktails, homemade ice creams and cakes, and the list goes on. They offer live music and customizable music in each booth too! If visiting Tampa or a special occasion, Berns is a must. They do book out months in advance though!! read more

I made a reservation for tonight after Bern's reopened from being closed for Gasparilla, and this visit had been a long time coming. We've heard about Bern's for YEARS from some of our closest friends in the Tampa area, so we were genuinely excited to finally experience it. I also noted in our reservation that it was our first time dining at Bern's and how excited we were. We arrived on time and were seated within just a few minutes, which was great. The food itself was excellent--truly deserving of the reputation. Unfortunately, the experience with the service was not memorable. We are easy guests and truly don't need much, but knowing that Bern's servers go through extensive training for years, it's hard to understand why we didn't receive the same level of service as the tables around us. Our server, Mark, felt very transactional from the start. He immediately asked what we wanted to drink without offering any introduction, history of the room, or a rundown of the menu--something we noticed every surrounding table received. He asked whose birthday it was (it was my fiancé's), but that acknowledgment never translated into the experience. We ordered a bottle of French Barolo wine. I had one glass and later asked for a New York Sour, which unfortunately never arrived. Our glasses were not pre-bussed, and I was never checked on or asked if I wanted another drink after I had been drinking water for about an hour. Additionally, every table around us received complimentary birthday desserts before being asked if they wanted to visit the dessert room--my fiancé never received one..... It truly felt like we were being left out of the experience, and we left wanting more of what everyone else around us seemed to receive. I would still recommend Bern's because the food was truly delicious, but our overall experience felt underwhelming given the level of service we observed at surrounding tables and the reputation Bern's holds. Fantastic meal and experience at this legendary Tampa steakhouse. The ambience and food quality are second to none. I was seated in a nice room and started out with French Onion Soup and a salad. Ordered the 10 ounce dry aged NY strip that was cooked a perfect medium rare and topped with a garlic sauce. Unlike most other steakhouses that charge à la carte the soup, salad and vegetables (including baked potato) are included with the cost of your steak which provides a good value. Following dinner I took a tour of the kitchen and wine cellar (largest collection in the USA) before heading up to the Harry Waugh dessert room where I enjoyed piano music along with my pistachio cheesecake. What a fantastic experience at Bern's this weekend. I had heard so many amazing things about the place, but I really only did about 50% of what is probably the appropriate amount of research so... I didn't realize until the morning I planned to go that they weren't open until 5. I also had no clue that there is usually a lineup of people waiting to get in as early as 4pm. I knew we were unlikely to get into the main restaurant but didn't know how the whole lounge seating thing worked or that the valet was required (unless you somehow manage to find street parking but that's largely non-existent so... ok) Anyway, arrived right after 5pm on Saturday after lots of on and off rain - which I was also hoping might scare people away? Who was I kidding - and even getting into the valet line was a struggle but we worked it out. Our valet attendant didn't seem convinced we would be able to be seated but as luck would have it, walked in and after checking in at the welcome stand we were seated in the lounge in about 7 minutes. Success! From there, things only got better. Our lounge server was Abdul and he was PHENOMENAL. Mom ordered the filet and I got the chateaubriand tips. The soup and salad were almost enough that we didn't need the entree but that entree. Wow. The steak was worth all fuss, sides were also terrific and we scored a nice portion to take home for leftovers. This was meant to be an early Mother's Day dinner, and I expect well plan the same for next year and by that I mean actually work on getting a reservation so the whole winging it thing doesn't have to happen. 10 stars and worth the trip! read more

The best experience! I booked 60 days before the date on OpenTable. If you want a good time on the weekend I highly recommend you make a reservation. Your dinner reservation will also include the kitchen and wine cellar tour. And most importantly the dessert room which we will come back to later. The bar is also open so you can grab a drink before dinner or you are by yourself and can dine there. Started with an old fashioned it was pretty good. We were seated before our reservation time. Our waiter was great! We ordered a couple of bottles of wine. We decided against ordering any appetizer since we wanted to leave room for the dessert. For my main I got the dry aged delmonico, med rare is wha is recommended. With the order of the steak you also get onion soup, a salad, potatoes, greens and onion strings. Steak was cooked perfectly and it was so delicious. After dinner we got a tour of the kitchen and the wine cellar (biggest private collection in the world). Then we went upstairs to the dessert room. Our downstairs experience was wonderful. Phenomenal service and delicious food. The dessert room was so disappointing; as a gluten free vegan, how is it possible that in 2026, the only option is sorbet? I can get delicious gluten free and vegan desserts at many restaurants. I can even get cookies at Publix and Walmart, but not at Bern's? Makes people like me feel very unwelcome and unappreciated. I sadly won't be back for dessert any time soon. read more

Bern's Steakhouse provided the most unique dinner experience I've ever had-- in the best way possible. I was in town for a month and made sure to book a reservation well in advance because it was a restaurant I wanted to try since I initially heard about it 5 years ago. It did not disappoint whatsoever. The vibe inside is like walking through an amusement park. Not tacky at all, just unlike anything I've seen before. They take you on a tour after your meal and the layout makes much more sense after they explain how it came to be. I give the ambiance a 10/10. I LOVED the "taste of Bern's" steak sampler. All the sides and appetizers it came with were outstanding. Nothing is overly complex, just very simple dishes executed extremely well. This place loves their wine and offers a million options, even by the glass. I just asked our server to get me a cheap glass of red to go with my steak and I loved it. I also had a perfect old fashioned. The service was top tier. Our waiter was extremely professional, and made us feel right at home from the jump. Our table of 7 wanted him to pull up a chair and join us for dinner but he politely declined. After dinner and the tour, we went upstairs to the dessert room and enjoyed a completely different experience. New table, new vibe, new server. You can request any kind of music that gets played specifically for your party. The tables are very secluded and intimate. Every dessert ordered at the table was spectacular, and I tried them all. And the cappuccino was UNREAL. We were at Bern's for a total of 4 hours. We left the restaurant at 1 AM on a Monday. I think we were the last table to leave and never once felt rushed. I consider Bern's to be one of the most memorable dining experiences I've ever had. A Florida fine dining establishment: delicious food, a large bill, gauche service, and an ostentatious yet fun atmosphere. Famous for its wine collection, multi-stage dining experience, and dry-aged steaks, dining at Bern's is an experience. The delmonico (ribeye) is cooked to the perfect temperature, properly rested, and has a nice crust. They use a charcoal grill, but the charcoal flavor is very subtle. The onion strings are exceptional: fluffy, crunchy exterior, soft interior, and flavorful. The French onion soup is outstanding- I wish I had more of it. The caesar salad is excellent. Creamed spinach is a delicious garlicky accompaniment to your steak. The blanched green beans are bland and the baked potato has too much sour cream to enjoy. The wine is exceptional and worth going with the server's pairing recommendation. The restaurant is large and over the top. Its walls are decorated with kitschy and tacky flair, such as a room whose walls are dotted with sculptures each lit by a spotlight. The wallpaper is dated. Each room has multiple bussing stations within seating areas so if you are unlucky you will be sitting next to piles of dirty dishes while tables are cleared. A true Florida fine dining establishment, there is no enforced dress code: you will see jeans, t-shirts, and the occasional suit jacket draped over the back of a chair. Bern's is proud of how it requires front house staff to train for a year before serving tables. The maître d' is not particularly friendly. The servers are polite, charismatic, and knowledgeable. They do not offer to let you taste the wine they recommend. When I asked to move tables, because I did not want to sit next to a bussing station and watch dirty plates getting stacked all night, our server said "this is where we work". He reluctantly offered another table next to a bussing station, and I had to specifically point out a better table. He resumed his professional demeanor after that, but the departure from class left its impression. The restaurant offers a tour of their kitchen and wine cellar. This tour is not worth it. If you have ever been in a world-class wine cellar, this is nowhere near as striking. You will stand in a narrow walkway, see a few shelves of wine, and look at a ridiculously large decanter and bottle they won't open until 2062 (by which time it will have probably spoiled). And that's it for the wine tour. The kitchen is like any other professional kitchen. You eat dessert upstairs. We were seated in a nice red room around a pianist - excellent atmosphere. The dessert service was friendly and professional. My grasshopper was what a grasshopper should be. The baked Alaska was striking in appearance (who doesn't love a flambé?) and tasty, although it would have been better with a different flavor of ice cream such as vanilla, and I don't think the alcohol burned long enough. I enjoyed the dessert experience. A fine dining restaurant must meet exacting standards, and this does not. Luxury lies in the details, and the details here are lost. By setting the bar high, Bern's renders its failure to match pretentious. Nonetheless, it is a fun environment, and the food and drinks are amazing. read more

So I'm going to keep this review simple... Excellent. I'm not going to delve into every little nook and cranny about this restaurant... If you're seeing this review you already know the facts -- This is a gorgeous restaurant, best service in town, you have to wait months to get a reservation at a normal time, and if you don't go to the desert room you're missing out. Even though... My desert room experience this time wasn't so great -- I think we just got a bad seating. Now for what I really want to talk about... Get the Wagyu. For as expensive as this cut of meat is everywhere else in town... It's the best bargain at Berns Steakhouse. A similar cut at most of the other restaurants in town is close to double the price compared to Berns. It's not cheap... But this is the cheapest and best in town. You can get a regular filet and/or ribeye anywhere else in town... Next time you go to Berns get the Wagyu. It was fantastic. Plus, with the complementary side, bread, soup...
