The doctors here is definitely a smart guy and that's why you have to be careful. Last time I was here they told my brother needed reading glasses. It didn't cost us much because insurance covered it but if we didn't have insurance it would have been costly. Every time he used those glasses it gave him headaches so we went to another place to get a second opinion. Turns out his eyes are fine and he doesn't need those glasses. Although I felt like this doctor is out for the money (which doctor isn't? Why pay so much for med school? That's right... because you make bank when you start your practice) he does know what he's talking about and if you do have a big problem with your eye, he'd know what to do. Also he has the latest equipment to make sure the procedures of your visit is as comfortable as possible. read more

I've gone here for a few years, already. Dr. Mac is very friendly. He shows lots of concern for his patients. I have diabetes, as well as the hubby. He always suggests things we could do to improve our health, not just our eyesight, which diabetes can greatly effect. They do about three or four different tests on your eyes, and that's before you go in to see the optometrist. Their frame selection is very good. Lots of high-end brands, some lower costing ones. Frames are pretty much the only thing I wear in terms of names brands. Last time I got Calvin Klein eyeglasses and Oakley sunglasses. This time around, I'm ordering Hugo Boss and another pair of Oakleys. They have Fendi, Dior, Coach, YSL, also, for you brand whores! ;-) So, they're a little pricey. If you've got a flexible spending card through your work, at least you buy them pre-tax. Dr. Mac even convinced me to consider contacts. I've always worn glasses, at least since I was in 6th grade (so most of my life). But he suggested if I wear contacts casually, I could get some disposals. He's quite the salesman, as well! The staff is always friendly, as well. From the front desk, to the assistants helping me fit for glasses! Oh, the kicker, and most genius thing that ever happened to me...Dr. Mac gave me one-day disposals to use while I was trying on frames! If you've shopped for glasses before, it sucks trying them on without your vision. Your face is right up against the mirror, just to see how they look on you! Not this time around. I think I'm in love!! After many years of sitting in front of the computer for work and school, I found myself squinting more frequently and unable to see many things from far away. I knew I needed to get my eyes checked ASAP. I normally do not like writing reviews for places that do not involve food, but I couldn't help it this time. Whenever I feel very strongly about a place (whether good or bad), I just have to review! Of course, every optometry's office contains the same - staff, doctors, glasses, etc. What really differs from location to location is the customer service! The customer service for this place deserves an A++++. Whether you call on the phone to schedule an appointment, the moment you walk in, or when you're picking/fitting your specs; the amount of warm and sincere energy you get is fabulous! No matter how many times I called with questions or asked the front desk during one of my appointments, they helped me with the upmost courtesy and as if I was the first person they've helped all day. After eye exam, I felt my vision was so blurry. Made me headache too.. When I drove to home, I got a phone call from staff, I had to go back their clinic. Optometrist forgot something to check on me before I left. What kind of treatment process was that? He did not even say sorry to me. I got my glasses prescribed from Berryessa optometry in November 2013, where I was informed that I can get my current sunglasses prescribed with them as it was covered in my vision care. When I actually went back to them to get my sunglasses prescribed, they asked me to get new frame instead of using my old frame ( with reason of prescription). They should have informed me regarding frame at very first time... Conclusion is they just try to rip you off... read more

As you can tell, I love patronizing my local shops. hubby and I went here as it's 1 mile from home and will certainly make it easier to keep those pesky yearly appointments. Dr. Mac is fabulous! He's down to earth and explains all the details you want to know or learn about your eyes. He's chatty and friendly...but then again, so are the whole staff. Stephanie was super nice as hubby and I tried on about 30 pairs of frames. I opted for the cool Gucci frame while the hubby requested a frame that makes him "look older and smarter - so that I can get a big raise" frame. to top it off, they give you 20% when you order your frames. Don't go here if you have any other choice at all; the worse DR. and everything else who comes with it I have ever seen since I moved to the bay area 15 years ago. Lets me start with my 18 years old son who wanted a contact: THIS ONE IS FOR CONTACT LENSES ok with DR. Lim First lets me said that we have one of the top insurance for vision so the payments are not the issue here, we got everything covered. My son come in for an appointment but he still had to wait half an hour at the waiting room, that OK if the DR. knows what he is doing on my opinion. The visit went fine we thought until he went back to try on the contact they order for him, they had the contact prescription on the wrong side of his eyes, so he couldn't see a thing when he put them on, then they had to return it and had to test his eyes again and waited another 2 weeks to complete everything. I didn't make a big deal out of it because I live near by so I was being lazy I guess I didn't want to travel far. Then I wanted to have my daughter eyes prescription renewed before school start so I call to make an appointment on 08/15/2012; at the time of the appointment my son told me to find a different Optometry he told me that they are incompetent but of course I didn't listen and went ahead and make the appointment anyway, today I wish I would have listen my son, he was so right about everything. THIS ONE IS A GLASS : DR. Lim 8/15/2012 She did the eyes exam and everything seems to be fine, somehow they manage to charge the maximum of the insurance allowance which is about $ 700 and I think that where everything went wrong because they wanted to get every single dime in that insurance so they added what ever possible to get the more money out of it, even though they know that she didn't need it and may damage her eyes. She picked a cute little frame and order it with speed so it will arrive before school. The glass come two weeks later which was fine with me, she went in and tried it on then went home, while we drive home she told me that this glasses are not working because she cant see on them, again I told her that she needs to get use to them after a while they will be fine; then a few days later I noticed she was wearing her emergency glasses we purchased online, that when I start to investigate about the glasses and what wrong with it, we realize that they put something she didn't need on it but it makes the glasses more expensive so even she didn't need it they put it anyway so with this on she can't see anything in her side at all, to look in the side she needs to turn her head around, she was basically blind on both side when she wore the glasses, so she refuse to wear the glasses and we had to take it back and she had to make another exam appointment, then got canceled then got moved because DR. LIM has to go to the Giants game so he has to cancel our appointment again, canceled about 3 times. Finally we got the appointment done then they had to re-send the glasses back again and never come back or at least we were never told that the glasses were ready. BY the end of this we manage to purchase 3 glasses online from her old prescription and they work better than the $700 glasses she picked there. Finally on 01/31/2013 I walked in and asked if the glasses were ever come back and sure enough they had it there all the time but they never called us and lets us know because they already received all the money long before this time. I don't like to give a bad review but they really deserve this, and yes they have lost my family service I am looking for a new optometry for my family now. read more

Today was my first visit at Berryessa Optometry. The staff were all very friendly and made for a very pleasant experience. I liked the fact that they had my essential information all typed out by the time I arrived. I merely had to verify that my info was correct, added my email address, and that was all for the new patient check-in. The first time exam (for new patients) was very thorough. I was given a preliminary check-up by a friendly technician (sorry, didn't catch her name). Then I got the main exam by Dr. Lim. What really impressed me about Dr. Lim is that he dialed into, and explained, some of my vision issues that no prior optometrist had ever discussed with me (over the past 25 years!). This was more than the "routine" eye exam I was used to, and I am very glad to have found this business. I have been visiting Dr. Mac for 2 years now. He's a specialist of my condition and been checking my eyes and fit special contact lenses for me ever since I left my college optometry and got introduced to him. Everyone here are very friendly and helpful. Dr. Mac also gives very personal care and explain each steps and results carefully. I've been going to Berryessa Optometry since 1992. Dr. Lim was my doctor for the first 15 years. Dr. Lim doesn't work on Saturdays so I have been unable to be seen by him ever since I moved away from San Jose. I saw Dr. Mac last year and Dr. Chung this year. Dr. Lim is by far the best. He remembers you (even tho you only see him once a year) and he makes conversation with you that's beyong superficial. He's very helpful and always provides great service. Dr. Mac and Dr. Chung are both very nice as well. However, I can't comment much since I've only seen them each once. They did the routine examination and that was about it. The staff here is also great. They are friendly and take their time to help you pick out frames (even if you're indecisive) and readjust glasses. One receptionist sounds a bit snooty on the phone but I have yet to figure out who that is. Minus 1 star for: -they said that someone was going to call me on Monday (I went on a Sat) regarding information on Lasik. It's been weeks and no one has called me. -When I had Dr. Lim, I was always told to go back for a follow-up examination whenever I bought new contacts. If I yelped after my eye exam, I'd probably would've given 4 stars. However, a couple hiccups occurred since then. Had I yelped after my follow up appt for my contact lens fitting, I would've given 3.5 stars because the young lady at the desk almost charged me for another exam. I had to mention I had a follow up exam and that I shouldn't be charged. She didn't sound very confident in what she was doing. May be she was new. Thinking it would be easier for them to order a pair of frames I liked (since they had my insurance and all), I actually called a couple weeks ago and asked for them to price out a pair of Gucci frames. The person I spoke with said she'd call me back in half an hour. Well, she never called me back. I couldn't help but think it was the same young lady who almost charged me for a follow up exam, but who knows. Less half a star bringing them to 3. i should've taken her name down. Why the 2 stars? I was at another optometry office TRYING to order a pair frames last week (the ones I called Berryessa to price out, but never called me back). I couldn't order them because I was told Berryessa Optometry claimed my eye exam and materials, which is strange because I hadn't bought contacts or frames using my insurance. I also left work early to pick out my glasses so I was frustrated. They told me to call Berryessa Optometry to clear things up so I called the next morning and spoke to Arielle. However, she told me to call that other optometry place back to get a release. Obviously, I was very frustrated at this point. She was apologetic, I give her that. (I also know she wasn't the one I spoke with when I asked for a quote on those frames.) I told her that I'm frustrated but I'll get this sorted out. Instead of calling the other optometrist office, I decided to call VSP first. Thank God I did! Long story short, I paid $89 out of pocket for my contact lens fitting so it wouldn't be applied to the frames/materials but they claimed it with VSP! No wonder, I couldn't order my frames. The VSP rep called Berryessa Optometry and apparently they were aware about the mistake and they were meaning to fix it, but hadn't gotten around to it. To think, I had my eye exam in October. It's December when I tried to order my frames! They didn't have enough time to fix that? ** Edit** I do intend to go back and see Dr. Mac next year. I have to say, after this year's round of check-ups (contacts and glasses), I remain a loyal and happy patient of Dr. Mac and Berryessa Optometry's. Doc Mac is incredibly thorough and conversational, the latter of which is hard to find in a doctor. (And, I'm also a nursing student, so I've dealt with my fair share of crappy doctors.) He tells me what to watch out for, and I appreciate that. At the same time, the front desk receptionists are always so nice. It makes you feel like the docs are very conscious of the image that they put out, and believe me, the patients appreciate it. Dr. Mac wrangled with my insurance company and filled out a pen-and-paper chart just to change my vision plan to accomodate for "medical necessity". Didn't have to pay for my contacts this year! I suspect the high reviews here are written by themselves The prescription I did here is wrong, and their response is you can't define what is wrong and right, because even they are wrong more than +- 0.75 in cyl, or +-80 in axis, you can't still sue them for incorrectness. well, they are so confident you can't sue them, so they just do whatever they can to your eyes. what people exam their eyes every year for? if not to find out the difference of +- 0.75 in cyl, or +-80 in axis. They say you paid them for their service, no matter whether they are qualified to tell you whether you have grown this +- 0.75 in cyl or not. not to mention the PD they measured for you is more than 4 mm wrong. Good luck for those who buy glasses in their store and use their PD not to get your eyes destroyed because of their disqualified work. Because they only want your money for their disqualified service and time, and they don't care about whether they have the ability to serve you correctly. They don't care about destroying your eyes, waste your money, and your time. For those of you who have done eye exam in this optometry, if you really love your eyes and not your money, get check in another optometry to get the second opinion, you would be surprised how much you have been fooled. read more

I was experiencing blurred vision and was in dire need of an annual check up. I visited this office and was pleasantly surprised at the interior of the establishment. It was very modern and spacious for an optometrist office and the customer service was prompt. I was greeted immediately upon my entrance and completed the a new client paperwork. I was then escorted to have pre-eye exams completed and Dr. Lim then conducted the remainder of my appointment. Dr. Lim was very personable and took the opportunity to explain the results of my exam. I was referred by a friend. Convenient location in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Staff is professional, friendly, patient, and super accommodating over the phone especially because I have a schedule that's hard to work with in making an appointment. They are open on Saturdays, which is nice when your work won't let you take time off. Inside is very nice, clean, and new looking. The exam seemed very thorough with multiple tests done. Dr. Mac was very thorough and what I liked the most was that he explained everything that he was doing and his rationale for the results he found throughout my exam. I took my sister here for her annual eye examination for the first time this year and I know we will be coming back. My mom wanted to come along for her examination also and they were able to fit her into their schedule at the last minute. The office is big and very clean with modern decor. The front desk staff got in touch with my family's insurance before our appointment, so they were very knowledgable with what we were qualified for. My glass legs are twisted and went there for fix. I asked by phone said they can do it and I only need to sign sth to ensure that is not their responsibilities if it broken. When I came there, they said they need to charge me $5 for that services. I went to many glass stores that fix it for free and really a warm greeting. This Berryessa optometry let me wait for 20 min there and charge a service fee there. Compared with other stores' services, I really dont recomment this store and wont come back. read more

So after my initial visit, I was told that it would take roughly a month for my glasses to be done. They didn't have the frame that I wanted in stock and had to order it. Then it had to go to whoever makes the lenses and then back to Berryessa Optometry. Very reasonable lead time in my opinion. I went today to pick up my sunglasses. The going lady that helped me was really friendly. She remembered me from awhile ago. I think her name is Christine or Christina. Bad of me to forget but anywho, she gave me my sunglasses and helped adjust them. Also helped with tightening my glasses. I called since the box to my new sunglasses had smashed a bit. It was probably me. When I came back to swap it out, I waited by my car and the gentleman was nice enough to bring the new ones to me. The staff is also very helpful - they are good at assisting individuals pick out the right frames for their face. The only thing I don't like is that they send you a postcard with a set date for your next appointment - without your input - so you must call to reschedule (if necessary) or be sure to show up because they will charge you for a no-show...even if you didn't have a part in the decision-making of the appointment date. I've required corrective lenses for over 10 years and have gone to the same optometry office. I decided to venture out and with the help of Yelp, discovered Berryessa Optometry (also conveniently located in my neighborhood). The treatment I received from the staff, assistants, and Dr. Mac was extraordinary. The professionalism and levels of experience blows me away! My case is a bit different, seeing as though I'm "legally blind" (pretty embarrassing). Christine and Dr. Mac made sure I was comfortable with all aspects of the contacts and glasses I was getting. Christine even went above and beyond by: 1) Making sure the lens on my glasses will be as thin as possible... so I won't look like I'm wearing two magnifying glasses on my face. 2) Manually crunching numbers to ensure the lowest cost came out of my pocket. 3) Informing me that I get discounts for non-prescribed sunglasses because of the type of insurance I have. 4) And icing on the cake - Making me feel normal, since she is as blind as me! I've been going to this place for 10 years or so, and to this day, I'm still impressed with their professionalism and friendliness. The place is always accommodating and clean with always a reasonable wait time to see the doctor. From the time I got in, I saw the doctor within 15 minutes. Both Doctor Lim and Doctor Mac are a pleasure to be with during the eye examination since they make me feel at ease during the eye exam. I just feel comfortable during the whole stay there. Even when I temporarily moved to Gilroy some years ago, I still came here for my exam. December 31, 2011: my yearly VSP lens/frame allowance was just hours away from expiring and I was frantic. As an avid Yelper, I couldn't just go to ANY optometrist - of course I had to hop on Yelp and scope out the lay of the land. Too lazy to drive more than a few miles out, I started calling the places in the area with 4+ stars. "Sorry we're all booked today" and "we can't fit you in" were common from most places - until I got in touch with Berryessa Optometry. Honestly I could have had just a mediocre experience and I would have still been happy, as it was my fault that I procrastinated until the last possible moment. But mediocracy was not to be had at Berryessa Optometry! The front desk staff were friendly and prompt, and within minutes I was seated with an Optician (sorry I forgot your name!). We ran through the normal eye exams and I was then escorted to Dr. Mac. He did a great job taking the time to explain all the different tests/exams and results. After figuring out what my prescription was, I headed out front to pick out my new glasses (the fun part). They have a really great selection of frames here and I picked out a pair of RayBans with the help of the Optician (since I have no sense of style myself). Overall great experience, clean office, and knowledgeable staff. Things can get a bit pricey here if you don't have good insurance, but I absolute LOVE the glasses I ended up with. A+... They were so incredibly nice. The two people at the front desk were super nice and accommodating. The technician was really nice. They were using really high tech stuff that I've never seen before. The place looked very bright, clean, classy, and modern. Dr. Lim was super amazing; really friendly, talkative, informative, very thorough, and an answered all my questions with a bright smile. Being a person that doesn't really visit they Optometrist, I didn't know what to expect when I went to my first Optometrist appointment. I was very glad to see that the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The front desk was really welcoming. Isabella was really nice and helpful during the initial eye test. Dr. Mak really helped me understand all the different things he was doing and answered all the questions I had. I was very glad to see that everyone was patient with me and did not rush me in any way. I took a long time looking at different sunglasses. They were also helpful in helping me decide between a few pairs I had in mind. The only thing that is preventing me from giving it a perfect rating is that they don't have as wide of a range of men's glasses. They have a ton of female glasses, but seem a little more limited in men's glasses. Still, I was able to find a par that I really liked. If I could, I would give them 4.5 stars, but it doesn't look like that is an option on yelp. I would recommend going to this office for a good experience with a great staff! read more

This is the best optometry in the area, and the best one I have been to. Office: clean like a whistle; various equipments for different exams for your eyes. Staff: super friendly; they are so helpful in explaining my insurance coverage and selecting different options for my eyeglasses. The last time, I was trying to choose a pair of eyeglasses, Ben was diligently helping me, even though we went over the office hour. Doctor: Dr Mac is a genuinely nice guy. If you said he put your best interest first, you wouldn't be wrong. He looked through both my spouse's and my VSP plans, try to explain the best choice for both of us. My family and I will definitely be coming back to this place. Booking an appointment was extremely easy as long as you call in ahead of time. Even after that, I was able to change the date for my appointment through the website they use to confirm it. Appearance: Rated on cleanliness, plain walls, and overall look of the place. Given the size of the business I wasn't expecting a crazy big selection to chose from when it came to my frame. Parking: Depending on what time you go, the plaza can be extremely busy. Don't schedule your appointment around 4-6 unless you either live within walking distance, or don't mind walking cause cause the parking lot fills up quickly. Staff: I was greeted within 15 seconds of entering the store. Extremely friendly people that made me feel really welcomed especially considering it was my first time there. They explained what every procedure did and went in-depth when asked about it. I never felt uncomfortable or forced into anything. What made this business standout more than other places I've been to is definitely this. I felt really well taken care of and I feel comfortable coming in for minor adjustments should anything happen. Examination: The examination itself took no more than 15-20 minutes in total. Standard operations and procedure when it came down to it. Choosing a frame: I was given time to look on my own for what I would like to try on and then was given recommendations (which I asked for). The lens and different options was ELI5 (explain like I'm 5). Not all of us understand how the different technologies embedded in the lens work so they made sure I understood where my money was going. After reading all the good reviews, I decided to pay a long overdue visit. And Berryessa optometry didn't disappoint. I had an appointment 2 weeks away and the receptionist called me as soon as an earlier appointment became available so I can come in sooner. Checking in was quick and everyone was professional and courteous. Dr. Mac was nice and made me feel comfortable. I took forever to select a frame but everyone was so patient and nice and gave me wonderful suggestions. Sure the materials were expensive but that's how it is with getting glasses nowadays. And the staff gave me a clear break down of the price and offered different options. Even though I didn't end up ordering from there, I still really appreciated their help.
