The second time I visited Dr. Steven for my yearly eye checkup, something was off. He was in a hurry or disappointed that I didn't want to get my lens fitting done, not sure. I refused to do lens fitting since I just got it done less than 8 months ago and I knew exactly which ones I wanted and my insurance covered it. May be they didn't like that I didn't want fitting which would have cost me $90 out of pocket. Anyway, the doctor gave me a prescription which was 0.25 less than last year's on both eyes. I got the glasses made elsewhere and then the nightmare started. I got headaches everyday, with super watery eyes. I never get headaches, but this time I could tell that my vision is not corrected well and I used to have severe headaches whenever I work for long hours on computer or watch TV/ drive. My eyes water a lot. I would not go back here, since more than caring for the patient and spending time to find out what their needs are, they are interested in making money. read more

I moved to San Jose a few months ago and needed to find an optometrist after realizing that I would not be able to pass the DMV test with my current vision. I searched my insurance's list of providers and yelped them as I went along. I had narrowed it down to two and Berryessa Optometry won... and I'm so glad they did! My wallet hates this place, but I personally, love it. Everyone there is extremely nice and very customer service oriented, which is fantastic, as it is apparently rare to find places where people do their jobs with smiles on their faces. Anyway, Cindy was great when it came time to find a frame for my face. My face is super round (very similar to a basketball's shape) and Cindy was uber helpful and patient with me. We found frames I love and I've received numerous compliments when I wear them - so thanks a bajillion times to you Cindy! David was super nice as well, as was Ariel. I saw Dr. Mac and he's great. Very thorough, and listens to what you have to say. He doesn't hold the same douchebag persona that many other doctors I know have. To wrap it up - this place is awesome! Came here for the first time and I'm pretty sure won't be my last. It's super close by to where I live and super helpful and friendly staff. I called and inquired about their business and the staff I spoke with on the phone was direct and helpful. She worked with my crazy schedule, which was nice, and when I came in for my appointment everyone was nice and friendly. Came in a little early for my appointment, but the staff constantly asked me if I needed anything while I wait. They expalined to me what to expect in their office and when the Dr arrived he was friendly and helpful. He was very patient with me and he explained every question that I asked. All in all I had a wonderful experience with my Dr and their friendly staff compared to where I use to go. They really make sure you understand any questions or concerns you may have whether it's regarding your vision or purchasing glasses. read more

Dr. (Thomas) Lim is very friendly & nice. The exam was thorough, but took freakin' forever unfortunately. I had a vet appt to be at (3pm) and my eye appt was @ 1:15pm, I got there about 5 mins early for my appt and didn't get out till 3:10 pm! Since I didn't even have time to look at any kind of eyewear and etc I'm coming back here again. Apparently, he won some kind of award or something and has examined the eyes of SJ Sharks (unrelated, but Thorton is hot). Mostly chose this place cause it's ridiculously close to my home and they accept my insurance. Overall the staff is friendly, professional and the office seems clean. The friendly staff presented me a line-up of close to 20 frames to choose from. Being picky kind myself, I had a hard time and spent over 1 hour to finally decide on one. I cannot compare with other places in terms of frame choices though since I have not been to anyone else in a long time. Finally I mentioned I am out on vacation soon, so the gentleman said he would rush on my order. That was Thursday. haha everytime I come here, I just think of the song Return of the Mack because my optometrist is Dr.Mac. Definitely a side note that should not take away from the awesome experience I have had for the last two years here. I have been here for my yearly exam since they accept my Anthem insurance. I would definitely call the office and make sure that they take your insurance and if they do, you should head on over. My insurance makes me pay copay and since it only covers a glasses exam, I had to pay the difference for a contact fitting. You can get purchase your contacts here as well and they give you a discount for purchasing there and a rebate but I opted to get it somewhere else. They have glasses frames to choose from as well if you are interested. I am fortunate enough to have Mac as my optometrist because he is a very nice welcoming optometrist who likes to get to know his patients. I have always had this innate fear of the optometrist because my eyes have been terrible since I was a kid but he definitely calms nervous people like me. The check up takes a little less than an hour so you should be in and out pretty quickly. It is a pretty easy breezy process and it doesnt hurt that Mac is the nicest doctor out there! I highly recommend this office and Dr.Mac if you are in need of any optical services. He gave me some solution and contact samples so that is always nice! **TIPS** 1) Check in and get a free chapstick. I've been coming to Berryessa Optometry since I was in elementary school (over 15 years). Ever since I was little, I always enjoyed coming here and seeing their large selection of glasses and sunglasses. They have a lot of great brands and always have up to date style frames and sunglasses. Dr. Mac is great. He is friendly and very informative. He always takes the time to explain things about whats going on with my eyes in order to give me a better understanding. He also gives great advice on how to take care of my eyes and glasses. Dr. Mac and the rest of the staff have always taken care of me. They work with you and your vision insurance in order to help you save money. I remember a few years ago, I had lost my only pair of glasses. My prescription is pretty bad! So driving around without glasses or contacts was not a good idea. I had called and explained what happened and they were able to schedule me the next day. They were kind enough to give me a few pair of contacts while my lenses were being made. Since then, I've learned my lesson by always having contacts and I recently bought a second set of glasses. I highly recommend Dr. Mac and his staff. I had the most amazing experience at Berryessa Optometry! This was my first visit, so I was a little nervous, not knowing if I'd feel comfy or if I'd like my doctor! But, as soon as the doctor walked in (Dr. Thomas L. Lim) I felt at ease! He is extremely personable, funny, knowledgeable, and answered each question I had. After my appointment, I had to pick my glasses, and they have a beautiful selection!!! I was being helped by Ben who is also extremely knowledgeable and answered all of my 1000+ questions :) Overall, the staff are professional, friendly, and knowledgeable!!! I have had glasses for my whole life and his was by far the worst experience I have had with a office. I brought my prescription in to get some glasses since they had a good selection. I knew that my new prescription was going to be a bit different then in the past. I actually ended up getting two pairs one for sports and one for everyday which cost me a $600+ since one was out of pocket. When choosing glasses I didn't get any recommendation which would fit my prescription best. So I choose 2 I liked. This is where the frustration started: I went back 12 days later to pick up my glasses and as soon as I put them on I knew something was wrong. I could barely see anything. I could honestly see better without glasses then with these. I mentioned to the guy helping me that something was wrong. He insisted that I just had to get used to them since the change was a bit more then normal. I continued to ask for him to check since I knew something was wrong. He insisted again that nothing was wrong! He took my current glasses and scanned them to show me how different my prescription was. Again I mentioned that I know how new glasses feel and that this was different. He INSISTED i give them a try tomorrow morning and that nothing was wrong. He was so confident that they didn't do anything wrong. So I took the glasses and went to my optometrist where he confirmed that they were made wrong. Not only made them wrong but were off by a full 90 pts on the axis. Not only that but my optometrist mentioned that the thickness of the glasses where on the bigger side and to ask how we can correct that. This was very upsetting since I insisted that there were made wrong at here and they would not believe me. Now I wasted my time and money driving back and forth with my optometrist and them. Just to come back and show them the glasses were made wrong. When I came back to talk to him he finally took my new glasses and scanned them to find out they were wrong. He obviously apologized AFTER being proved wrong. At this time I mentioned the thickness and he explained why but at this point the credibility of this place was low. I asked if I can return both pairs all together and he said I couldn't because they were custom made. That's ridicules since they made the mistake. Now I am stuck waiting another 2 weeks for my glasses to be done from a place I wish I never went to. In the end the guy offered me 10% off. Not really what I was looking for. I wouldn't recommend anyone go here. Rather go to LensCrafters. read more

Berryessa Optometry is really a first class, professional business! I just started a new job where I have to work on multiple computers and write. It was getting to be a hassle squinting at the screens and lifting my glasses to write. I didn't want bi-focals and have to deal with moving my head up and down, plus, that would make me feel too old! Dr. Lim listened to my concerns and suggested getting computer lenses instead. I was hesitant, but Dr. Lim insisted that those would work perfectly for my purpose. When I wore the new glasses at work; I was amazed at how clear the print on the computer screens were and how I didn't need to make any adjustments looking at things near or far. I LOVE my new glasses! Being able to see clearly has really boosted my self-confidence at work, and I am so thankful that Dr. Lim was so patient with me and took the time to really tailor the product to my needs! read more

My mother broke her frames and I needed to have her existing lenses put into new frames. I went here to see if it was possible for them to do this for me (because I was turned down by other places - Lens Crafters at Eastridge and Optima in Santa Clara wouldn't help me and had horrible customer service). I dealt with Cindy and Ben and they were both soooo helpful. When the new frames came in, Ben put the lenses in and the glasses look really nice. I just received a postcard from Berryessa Optometry to come in for my yearly appointment. My husband and I went to Berryessa Optometry a year ago, approximately July 2016. Our first time, wanted to go to a local optometrist, unfortunately, this was not the place to go for both of us. We got our eye exams, then got up sold on glasses. We both got our prescription glasses, I got one pair and my husband got 2, I could not read with my pair and my husband, both pairs were not done well. This is an overdue review... It has been a while since I had my eyes checked. My sister referred me to Berryessa Optometry and was seen by Dr. Lim mid last year (2013). He's awesome and such a great person. He did a very good job and was super thorough on the exams. The entire staff are very welcoming and knowledgable. It took a while for me to decide which frame I want and the person helping me was very patient and helpful. I didn't feel rushed at all. I can't wait to pick up the glasses he helped me pick. My husband and son had their eye exams done here as well and they were happy about their experience. My husband was helped by Christine, she's really nice and knows her stuff. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a great optometrist. Look no further, our entire family goes here. My sister and her family has been going here for over 18 years. Dr. Mac is the best optometrist ever! You can tell he is passionate about his work. My wife and I recently got our glasses from Berryessa Optometry and all I can say is everyone here is amazing. But the real star was our optician Steven. He helped us pick our glasses and with our fitting. He was great because during the fitting he actually listened to what we wanted done to our glasses. I've had a couple appointments here and chose this place because it's close to my house. The service is great. Very attentive and professional. I went back for my annual check up and had to get my lens fixed because of scratches. The whole service including lens repair(not under warranty) cost me almost $400. I have insurance too. They gave me 2 weeks worth of contacts to hold me off. I wasn't able to get contacts because the price of the check up and repair were so high. I wasn't expecting that. When I got my glasses back, they didn't fit anymore. They told me glasses usually become looser overtime. I've only had my glasses for 2yrs. They tried to heat them to bend to my head but to this day I have to wear the straps to keep them from falling. Again, they're very professional and accommodating but very pricey. read more

This place is way overpriced to have my lenses done. To have my lenses done for a single vision, they charged me $580 and since I am in their network, my insurance paid 80% so I paid $114 out of my pocket, while at Costco to have your lenses done for a single costs $73.99 with the same option features and that's without an insurance and for out of network, insurance 50% so I only have to pay half of that. Without an insurance, Costco charges people way less. If I knew this office overcharged me, I wouldn't come and have it done at all. Next time, I am going to Costco to have my lenses done. I guess I was in the hurry to have my lenses done that I did not do enough research and I realized I was charged way too much after I got a quote from another eye doctor who told me for a single vision, the price should be from $250-$350, but the quote from Costco that has the best price. After I found out I was overcharged, I suggested my husband to go to Costco to have his glasses done and they did a good job and they gave him a really nice case for his glasses while this office gave me none except glass cleaner. Anyone who wants to save money and want to have a good service and quality, they should consider going to Costco to have their glasses done there. read more

The only positive in my experience was the doctor. Very thorough exam, however the staff was horrible and need to brush up on their customer service skills. was calling around for a basic eye exam (i needed to fax the results to a potential employer) and spoke to christina. although very friendly and eager to answer all of my questions, christina seemed very confused. after i asked her if they offered an eye exam she said that they did not BECAUSE they are berryessa optometry with TWO optometrists. i became concerned after this and explained again that i just needed a basic eye exam for a potential employer... i wasn't looking for glasses or contacts (yet). christina reluctantly quoted me $207!! the last two offices i had called quoted around $60. christina even put me on hold to confirm this price. needless to say i will NOT be going to berryessa optometry any time soon! read more

Professional, Personal, Convenient, Prompt and Clean! I am the daughter of two optometrists, so I KNOW optometrists! Having recently moved to the Bay Area, I needed to find a local optometrist. Knowing of his reputation, my optometrist mom handpicked Dr. Lim as her recommendation. I must say (sorry Mom and Dad) that this was the best eye care experience ever! FAST: After check-in, I was immediately greeted by a staff member who took me directly to pre-testing for the start of my exam. STAFF: The entire staff is friendly and very professional. When choosing frames, I had a lot of options and was having difficulty finalizing my selection. Several of the staff joined the process and helped me make my final decision. DR. LIM: He's the best! Super professional and intelligent and also extremely caring (great people skills). I didn't feel rushed during my eye exam (which can sometimes be intimidating during the "which is better, 1 or 2" part as I tend to take forever to make up my mind). CLEAN: The office is bright and clean and the staff wipes down all eye equipment frequently which left me, the germo-phobe, relieved. read more

I brought my two children in here to look at the different glasses that were on display. My 3 year old daughter needed to use the restroom so I asked the receptionist at the desk where the restrooms are. The terrible lady sitting at the desk obviously either does not have any children of her own or had PMS that day, told me very rudely that restrooms are for customers ONLY! WTH, showed no sympathy that when a child needs to go pee it is usually an emergency when they speak up. No way I'm coming back....just hug on to your toilets and your glasses for all I care. I ended up getting my glasses at Costco, price is cheaper and quality is better. Advice: Hire front desk staff that are more friendly, they are the first to greet your customers and if they piss them off you will lose big bucks without even knowing it! I used love going to this place not only because it was convenient and the doctors and staff are friendly. I recently called to make an appointment and the doctors were booked everyday I was available, so I waited for the following month to make an appointment. When i called the receptionist put me on hold for quit some time to check my insurance policy, even though i told its the same one and its active. I felt like she didnt want to help me unless I had insurance. I understand that they need to make money, but to be so upfront about it made me very uncomfortable. Anywho I finally booked an appointment and they cancel the day before. I will be taking my business else where. read more

I went to this office for the first time because most of the people gave 5stars. I assume this office would be awesome. I went there and had appointment with Dr. Lim for routine exam. He ended up giving his name cards to me to introduce this office to my friend. I don't feel that is the right way to do it, but I let it go. And then, he told me to get the retinal picture and refraction because i am a new patient there. Those tests are required- Dr. Lim said. I ended up paying $46 which is not cool at all. I don't want to take those extra exam but they force me to because they keep telling me that i am new patient. I feel this office take your money too much. I' ve been going to this optical office for over 13 years now. My husband and I are always pleased with their services and trusted them the pricing for everything. Unfortunately, I had encountered a bad experience today so I have been aware that this office has always overcharged me for over the last 13 years. On June 29,after an eye exam with Dr. Mac,I decided to make a new bifocal progressive lens for my glasses. After all the deductible of my insurance coverage, they charged me with the total of $384 for just the new lens, I still reuse my own frame. Then July 5, my husband and I went to Lens crafters at Valley Fair Shopping Mall. My husband was interested to make a new pair there and amazingly the total cost that I had to pay from my own after all the deduction was just $ 212 with the frame from designer Burberry and single vision lens. In the mean time, Lens Crafters also offers a promotion of 40% off of the second pair of lens if you purchased a new frame for the primary pair. I have learned that with this deal, I would just have to pay from my pocket after my insurance coverage deductible is $199 only with all the same specifications. I was shocked with this comparison, I quickly called Berryessa Optometry to cancel my order on June 29. But the answer is "no" because the order was electronically proceeded according to the personnel staff. Later of the day, I stopped by the optical office in hoping they would resolve the matter in a satisfactory way. Then, they sent Ben out to negotiate with me. According to Ben, as a former Lens Crafters employee, he ensures this office charges the customer high because it provides high tech, superior materials much more higher than Lens Crafters. He would neither cancel my order nor make any changes for the unreasonable overcharges. My husband and I had been loyalty to this office for a long period of time, but they take advantages on our trust. They don't run their business with the best commitment of making customers happy. read more

I was satisfied with my visit on my Pre-tests and test with Dr. Hung Mac, but I was not satisfied with the staff's helpfulness with my requests. I was having questions about the Anti-reflective lenses and the higher quality lenses (both which are scratch proof) and she couldn't really give me a thorough explanation on how one lens was "more" scratch proof than the other, if both are scratch-proof. Also, she did not explain to me what exactly I was being charged for since I got new frames and a pair of Ray-Ban Sunglasses Prescribed. The sunglasses were already purchased before hand, and my total for my sunglasses was about $160 NOT Polarized with Prescription and Tint, when my old optometrist in Saratoga was only $80 for Polarization, Tint, and prescription. I felt like I was very overcharged, even for my new frames (Which came out to be ~$300) I may or may not come back after experiencing this. I was pretty disappointed because Berryessa Optometry had very high reviews on yelp. Also, their selection on frames were very low-end. It seemed like 3/4 of their selection were all plastic frames as I prefer Metal Frames. When I told the assistant that I prefer square metal frames, they only had 3 available that were all $250+ (when my insurance covered $130) which didn't really give me a choice after all the tests I went through. read more

He was very nice and explained to me some of the newer anti-glare technologies namely the ones that help blockout harmful blue lights from electronics. He asked if I had ever considered contact lenses, and actually helped me to put some on since I had never tried. Now that is customer service! First time here! Customer service is top notch! Which is a real surprise, since the location is a little "spotty." When you walk in, staff members are not shy and as mentioned earlier, customer service Is "top notch." They really go out of their way to make you feel "important." Dr. Mac is a "class act" and very personable, easy to talk to and a great conversationalist. They also pay close attention to the details when it comes to their eye exams and really helpful when choosing the perfect frames and lenses. There is no "upselling" here, but they do take their time and explain and offer different options. All in all a great experience and a great find! read more

I have very difficult eyes that are extremely dry, and I was looking for contacts that would work with my eyes, and there were NO lenses that I was feeling comfortable with; They went dry and gave me a headache after 5 minutes of wearing them.
