We visited at lunchtime on a weekend and the line, though substantial, moved along steadily. We got beef ravioli, eggplant parmigiana, and meat arancini--all to go. First, the good: the arancini was quite tasty. We had a mixed reaction to the eggplant, with some of us liking its smoky taste and others wondering of that was intentional or if it was just burned. Now, the bad. The ravioli was horrible. The pasta shells were mush--barely solid. In fact, they were so mushy that we wondered if they had been fully cooked; they could easily have been partially raw. The tomato sauce was sweet, which was divisive among us. They give you a good portion of the buttery and savory meat. The roll was very soft and fresh. It just melted in your mouth. My wife and I usually split some beef raviolis and beef meatballs. The beef raviolis are meaty pockets of pillowy soft goodness. I know I said this before in my previous review. But it's so true! The marinara sauce is sweet and flavorful. Never a drop goes to waste! One of the beeest sandwiches I've had in the South Bay! And, don't sleep on the ravioli either. I ordered the not-so-secret Chris Combo after seeing raving reviews about it everywhere! Honestly, I couldn't find it on the menu and didn't really know what was in it, but I trusted the process and the sandwich was AMAZING. The only thing was that the sandwich was smaller than what I've seen in photos... I took one bite and that one bite took all of the pastrami that was in the sandwich lol. We also got a quart of beef ravioli to share amongst 4, and wooow did this wow us. The ravioli was light and pillowy, and the tomato sauce tasted fresh and flavorful! We came on a Saturday after lunch and the place was BUSY. To order, you grab a number towards the right right by the cashier. Then, they call out numbers one by one. The person who calls your number is the person who preps your meal and helps you with checkout. Was in the mood for some Italian food and decided to give this place a shot, considering the good reviews and my lack of familiarity with Italian cuisine. The service was quick, and the interior is designed as a typical deli with a fair number of people in spite of how small it was inside. We decided to get one box of beef ravioli as well as a Chris Combo sandwich, which we found to be really salty. It was manageable for me, but if you lean more towards lighter flavors or have a low salt tolerance you may find it to be too much. We also did not realize that we would have to cook the ravioli ourselves, which was a minor inconvenience but also entirely on us. The ravioli was a lot more enjoyable to eat, with a good balance of flavor and texture, and the tomato sauce that came with it was great too. There's something about that sandwich that hits all the right notes for me, and hard to replicate at any ol' deli. When I worked in MTV 2020-22 and finally figured out my gluten issues, a monthly pilgrimage to grab my Chris Combo ensued. Whenever I meet anyone from Willow Glen, La Villa is the first thing discussed to get on the same page. When I found out my boyfriend grew up in Willow Glen, we made a deal to visit the South Bay asap to get ravs. I'm writing this review now because my sister and her husband are in the process of moving to WG and the first thing I told her was - "we'll visit any time so long as we get La Villa!" ;p BF and I finally found ourselves in the South Bay on a week day at the end of December (closed Sunday, Monday). We didn't think too hard about our visit, but in hindsight, will reconsider going the Thursday before a holiday. I believe it was about 45 min from grabbing a number to sitting down outside to eat -- not bad considering the line was wrapped around inside and slightly out the door. By the time we left, the line had extended out the door and nearly to the end of the block. They work very efficiently, but sandwiches are made to order, so don't expect to be in and out, unless you call your order in way ahead of time. While waiting in line, I found out my boyfriend had never had the Chris Combo *shock* so it made the visit all the better. His eyes lit up with his first bite and our only complaint is we wish the sandwich was larger so we could have leftovers. Next time we'll probably get an extra for the next day, it's just THAT good. The shop is stuffed floor to ceiling with Italian foods to make your best authentic dishes at home, so no indoor seating, but they have a ton of tables outside + a canopy to shade some from the elements. The Italian combo was also very delicious and had a little bit more of a yummy sauce on it. You should also consider trying the ravioli while you're there. So let me keep it real: as a native New Yorker that's been working in the Bay Area for the last month, one of the handful of things I've missed (and have openly been seeking out and asking for recommendations): a traditional, old school Italian American deli with actual east coast food and ambiance. Met three people originally from the tri-state area, they said the food is good for the area and they also all told me to NOT waste my time looking for any semblance of real pizza out here. LOL. Thanks for the heads up. And after some light sports and neighborhood banter, my number was called and I ordered an Italian combo sandwich and ricotta ravioli. In a few short minutes, it was time to eat and... Let's just say the ravioli was NOT anything near Queen Ann or Pastosa in Brooklyn. And I also get it that I should never expect to have a Red Hook Defonte's or Wall Street Pisillo's proper sandwich BUT since when did "Italian" anything feature mustard AND mayonnaise? Major let down. But hey, maybe it's just what the locals look forward to eating. No joke, I wrapped up the half I did not eat and handed it to the home less guy outside the classic-looking Starbucks on the corner. Hard pass. And yeah, the bread was meh, but I understand that I will never get a proper loaf of semolina out here. So that was no surprise on my end. I'm giving this place 2.5 out of 5 stars because, well, the ambiance was great, the staff were friendly, the people on line struck up some great banter but for an Italian deli, the food was subpar. A long time staple in the Willow Glen downtown scene, Bertucelli's is a small Italian deli that serves up some amazing hot food (as evidenced by their long lines & wait). It's got a real local San Jose feel to it, I especially love the Sharks memorabilia that covers one wall ceiling-to-wall. Very down to earth people working behind the counter -- friendly and no-nonsense. While they sell a variety of Italian goods (e.g. dried pasta, sauces), their real specialty is their house made food. Bertucelli's operates on a take-a-number system: after walking in, grab a number from the ticket dispenser by the front cashier, and then get in line. The line is there for convenience / efficiency since the deli space is quite small. On to the food.. before you even ask, yes. The Chris Combo sandwich really is that good. So are their beef ravioli's and their lasagnas (all 3 of which are in regular rotation in my orders). The Chris Combo sandwich is a semi-warm sandwich, with a soft roll bread, cheese melted between deli meats, and some sort of Italian mayo dressing. The beef ravioli is stuffed with the filling, and the lasagna is equally as hearty with a ton of cheese and sauce, just the way I like it. Marinara sauce that is ladled in with the ravioli and lasagna is a tad too sweet for my taste, but good! La villa is awesome! On this trip I got a turkey and parma prosciutto sandwich and the Chris combo. The turkey is super fresh and the prosciutto is super delicious. It just melts in your mouth. The Chris combo is an amazing explosion of flavors in your mouth. It's not on the menu so ikyky. For the Chris combo they don't allow any changes so either you take it the way it is or you don't get it at all. But honestly no changes are needed because it's always amazing. Their sweet French roll is a must because it's super soft and pillowy. It's definitely my favorite of the bread options. The ravs are awesome and the lobster ravs with the vodka sauce is my go to. You can only get them by the pint and totally worth it. Do you yourself a favor and call them ravs and not ravioli only newbie's call them ravioli. When you walk in grad a number because yes you need one. My biggest pet peeve is when a new person is there and doesn't get a number. Or doesn't know what to order. You wait so long and then you take more time trying to decide when then finally do call your number. Do yourself a favor and review the menu before your number is called it's makes things go so much faster. So at this point if you are still trying to decide if you want to go. Stopped in after work one day to pick up some beef ravioli that was highly recommended to me by several coworkers and also grabbed a calzone and some breadsticks and I was blown away by how good everything was. Oh dear Lord. Someone from my house stumbled on this place by mistake a few months ago and came home with some vegetarian Lasagna and Eggplant Parmesan. It was so amazing that today when I was in Willow Glen, I had to stop in and pick up dinner. I love this place. It's has a very family feel to it and a wide variety of things to choose from. The ambiance is very Italian and has a cold bar and a hot bar as well as a grocery section. I could have easily spent a few hundred dollars just stocking up on things from the store. I grabbed our favorite Eggplant Parmesan (which by the way is a very healthy portion with lots of cheese) and the Vegetarian Lasagna (which is also a huge portion they cut in half). Plus we decided to get some cannelloni. I have some pictures of each but the lasagna is half eaten and half the cannelloni I got was gone when I shot the picture. The service was excellent. Wasn't able to get back as early as I wanted to take care of my Chris Combo craving, but to ensure it was met this time I ordered 5 sandwiches (for 4 people!) a pint of raviolis, a pint of meatballs (pint = 5 large meatballs), and a quart of their marinated mushrooms... it was hard not to get a bag of their biscotti (really, really hard!), but I did go back for those just before Easter! Mmmmmmmmmm! Everything was just as delicious as always! The standouts were the meatballs and eggplant parm (good portion and really loved the eggplant being grilled, gave it a nice roasted veg flavor). The raviolis were too doughy, but still tasty. Their sauce is on the sweet side and it's good to balance it by adding crushed red pepper. Couldn't try a sandwich because they ran out of breads...got there later in the day, before their usual Sunday and Monday off, so also understandable. Was walking down Willow Glen checking out some local businesses and was suddenly drawn to the smell of pasta sauce. I saw a small line of people going in and out of Bertucelli's Deli and after seeing their Yelp page, I had to go in to see what was going on. This deli is apparently famous for their fresh, handmade raviolis and sandwiches. It's very small and intimate, with a nice selection of authentic and imported Italian goods and a hot bar and deli counter filled with lots of appetizing food. I immediately got in line and thought about what I wanted to order. After about 20 minutes, it was my turn but I realized I didn't grab a ticket at the front of the store. They were really nice and took my order since I did wait with everyone else and it was an honest first timer mistake. I ordered a tub of beef ravioli, a slice of lasagna, half of the roasted chicken, the tiramisu, and the raspberry lemon cake ($40 before tip). I had pretty high hopes and I wasn't disappointed. The ravioli was amazing and so extremely fresh. The beef filling was tasty, with a slight hint of sweet and tangy from their tomato sauce. The slice of lasagna was large and hearty, filled with layers of cheesy goodness. Their chicken was nice and succulent, with the skin being slightly crispy. I also really enjoyed both the tiramisu and the cake. Honestly wish I ordered more after everything was finished. I was lured here by tales in the local paper of the famous Chris Combo, a sandwich beloved by South Bay sports franchises and so secret that they won't even disclose the ingredients to you. It was a pretty standard selection of deli meats & cheddar cheese, topped with some kind of Italian dressing and a bit too much mayo, all in a very soft and forgettable sandwich roll. Years later and it is still fantastic! I have been dairy free for years but decided to splurge after a rough week and had about 5 raviolis. They were almost sweet from the tender tomatoes in the sauce and pillowy soft. I was stoked to have my son try them for the first time and as a carb lover, he was also impressed. No chef boyarde around here! What was an unexpected and delightful surprise was their freshly baked sourdough and I may have eaten half on my way home. Who can resist warm bread?! Bertucelli's La Villa - The Friday special! Roasted chicken, veggies & ravioli! - Sandwiches Near Me - San Jose, California

Love this place! I've been here a few times years ago, then stopped going when I had to go on a gluten free medical diet. They do have roast chicken and veggies that would work for gluten free people, but not a whole lot else. So I avoided la villa's out of sadness. Well recently I've been able to reincorporate gluten and have been wanting to visit this popular deli again, and it surpassed my previous memories! My boyfriend suggested going late in the day to avoid the worst crowds, especially since it was Saturday. We showed up around 2:30 and took a number. There were 20 customers ahead of us so we walked around the block and window shopped first. We came back when there were 10 people ahead of us and pushed our way to the different displays to see what we wanted. I wish they would only allow a certain number of customers in the store at a time. If you're not comfortable pushing through crowds, it will be a challenge to get a good look at what's available in the display cases. I decided to get the Chris sandwich. I always used to get the Italian, but the Chris seems to be soooo popular that I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I also got an espresso crème brûlée, and my boyfriend got a single arancini, a meatball, and some stuffed shells. I love that you can get random small amounts of a bunch of different items from the hot bar. Everything was delicious. Standouts were the meat arancini, (I'm definitely getting one for myself next time), and the espresso crème brûlée (perfect flavor, great texture, and came in a lovely reusable glass that I saved). The Chris sandwich was quite tasty and really hit the spot. I liked how saucy it was. It really needed more acid though. Luckily I had pickles at home which I added and that was perfect. Next time I'll see if they can add pickles and if not, I'd only order it if I have pickles at home. One thing I hate is that the ingredients aren't layered well so you have to reassemble the sandwich yourself to avoid getting huge bites of meat on one side and almost none on the other. That problem is completely worth it though to enjoy the deliciousness of la villas food. In the future I want to try their famous ravioli, definitely more of the arancini, and more of the desserts. I'd get the Chris again too as long as I can have pickles. So good, I'm still thinking about it the next day! read more
