This spot wasn't quite what I expected--it's a full restaurant, but with a self-service twist. You order at the counter, bus your own table, and refill your own drinks. It felt more like a sports bar, but with a family-friendly vibe that made it comfortable and relaxed. I ordered the one meat, two sides plate--but judging by my serving, it looked more like double sides! Everything was extremely tasty and satisfying. If you're looking for a laid-back place with good food and don't mind a hands-on dining experience, this is worth checking out.

Came in on a recommendation. It was late and they were unfortunately out of brisket, turkey and mac & cheese. Opted for a teo meat plate - pulled pork, pulled chicken with potato salad and collards. Chicken was moist and the sauce really made it special. Pulled pork was just ok, didn't get any of that Smokey flavor one expects from Que. Potato Salad was creamy with hints of pickle and some dry mustard heat. The collards were tender and full of flavor, no need for any pepper vinegar!

Honestly, this is still one of my favorite BBQ places in town. Yes, the atmosphere feels "lived in" (in the best way) because they have been around just that long... But it makes you feel at home.. It's an icon. A beacon. A Charleston OG! And it has stability for a reason. The staff are friendly, the food is solid, portion sizes are on point and the prices though they have gone up have kept in line with inflation and the times.

Stopped at Bessinger's BBQ for the first time yesterday. When you walk in you place your order at the counter, then you seat yourself. They call your name when your foods ready. Our food was ready in about 10 minutes. My wife and I ordered the Big Joe Pork sandwhich basket. The basket came with a large pulled pork sandwich, stake fries and a large battered onion ring. They offer severaI different bbq sauces at the self-service counter. I would have to say it was some of the best bbq that I have had here in Charleston. As far as the atmosphere this is a laid back, casual, family friendly restaurant. Note, they do not serve liquor but they do serve beer. I would recommend that you give Bessinger's a try.

Food, awesome. Service, quick. We decided to sit inside and it wasn't that busy. But the drive-through was booked and busy honey! This was my first time here and everything was delicious. I went with the brisket, pulled chicken with a side of fried okra and greens. Cooked to perfection even though I like my okra fried a little harder than what they had, it was still good. Will definitely be going back when I'm on that side of town again. Oh and the bbq sauces were top tier.

Bessinger's Barbecue on Savannah Highway is a must-visit destination for authentic Southern barbecue in South Carolina. This family-owned establishment has been a staple for decades, and it's easy to see why--it's the perfect combination of rich history, delicious food, and warm hospitality. The star of the show is their signature mustard-based barbecue sauce, a true South Carolina classic that perfectly complements their tender, slow-cooked meats. Their smoked brisket is outstanding, with a deep, smoky flavor that keeps you coming back for more. The sides at Bessinger's are just as memorable--the golden, crispy onion rings are legendary. We were too full for dessert sadly because we heard we needed to save room for their banana pudding which is said to be the perfect sweet finish to a hearty meal. Next time for sure! The casual, welcoming atmosphere makes it a great spot for families, friends, and travelers looking to enjoy a relaxed meal. The staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring every visit feels like a special occasion. If you're in the Charleston area, Bessinger's Barbecue is a must-try. It's not just a meal; it's a true taste of South Carolina's barbecue tradition! Quick in and out fill you up meal that's affordable, flavor filled with ample parking. Located on a busy multi lane highway so just take precaution pulling in and out.

The platinum standard of barbeque! The pulled pork is juicy and delicious, add any of sauce and make the angels smile! Mac n cheese, done right. Hash over rice, first time I've had it, not bad, I'd have it again. That cornbread...let the church say amen. The jalapeños aren't over powering but let you know they up in derre. Soft n sweet, so good, put it in my casket. Definitely worth cheating on your diet for. You'll burn the calories off walking around the beautiful city of Charleston anyway.

Small parking spaces so you would have to rely on street parking on busier days however I was lucky to park behind the restaurant on a Wednesday evening. Service was excellent! Let's talk about the food! I ordered a 3 meat combo: Brisket, Pork Ribs, and Pulled Pork. My favorite was the brisket however I wish it was sliced not chopped nevertheless it was tasty. The Pork ribs were delicious as well but I wish it was more tender. Pulled pork was nicely seasoned but not my personal preference of meats however it was my first time so I had to get a little taste of everything. I will definitely be back to try their brisket sandwich! The sides: Collard Greens, Mac & Cheese, and Cornbread that all come with the combo. I enjoyed these sides as they hit what southern sides are all about. No problem there!

The restaurant itself is not at all fancy, even rustic one might say, but I came to eat, not look at decor. You stand in line and tell them what you want and they slice it right there and you move to the next station for sides and then drinks. So we got two whole beef cheeks and the Puerto Rican beans. I asked the fella behind the counter if I wanted the hash and rice or the beans and he said definitely the beans. Boy was he right. Make sure to get the house made pickles and pickled onions as they add the perfect amount of acid to the rich beef cheeks. I am a barbecue pork fanatic. Even after living in Texas where brisket and the beef rib are king, I favor pork. Today I jumped to the beef side. Beef cheeks that is. So tender that no knife was needed. Smokey with a flavor I can't describe because I never had them before. Heavenly. Those Puerto Rican beans also had a combination of flavors I haven't had before. LOVED THEM!!! They did not have wine although the website said they did, but I lived. Dog friendly as well. My daughter is coming from NYC and I can't wait for her to try them. You should as well.

The ribs tasted like they were boiled, slathered in seasoning, and baked until bone-dry and soggy all at once. The mac & cheese was stiff from far too much flour and stingy on the cheese--the crust and color were completely deceptive. As for the barbacoa, it had the texture of unflavored glue melting in your mouth. To top it off, almost everything tasted like it was drenched in smoked paprika. The last time I was lied to about food like this was when we were deceptively lured to "Smokehouse Destination" for pure smoke and mirrors. Here, I was waiting for the hype man to burst out at any moment and declare "tendernism!" on this tray. Sure, it was tender--tender and flavorless. I honestly feel like I've been "Punk'd." I guess Terry Black's and Goldie's in Texas have ruined barbecue aspirations for everywhere else, because this experience was one where literally everything on the plate was awful... except for the pickled onions and the barbecue sauce.

I wasn't a fan of them without the dressing. They were also a little dry. I would give them a 3 out of 5. - The appetizer, the cornbread itself, had a nice butter topping for it. The cornbread seemed to have corn bits in it, which were chewy, but the cornbread was also dry, so I'd have to give it a 2 out of 5. - The empanadas themselves were cooked a little long, but the filling was really good. The flavors of the corn and everything together made it a 5 out of 5. They were a little pricey for two empanadas, but it was the star of the meal. I would definitely say the empanadas are a 4 out of 5 only because of the quantity that you get for the price. - The mocktail that they made was super sour. It needed some simple syrup to tone it down, but flavor-wise, it was good. I would have to give the entire experience a 3 out of 5.
