I had to give 5 stars cause I've been coming here since I can remember. FOOD: The donuts are yummy, but what it stands out to me more is that it is consistently so. It is hard to find consistency at small bakeries but their donuts have been the same for years. I always know where to go if I want a good donut or a place to quickly grab a dozen to bring home. If you go earlier in the morning they have fresher donuts which are so so good. The people who work there have been the same for so long and occasionally they throw in a few donut holes or something which is really sweet. They have a nice variety and most of their donuts are light and puffy. The old fashion donuts are also good, but they tend to be a bit greasier and are more cake-like. I wouldn't recommend keeping the donuts around for more than 2 days cause then they get a bit gross. SERVICE: Definitely points for loyalty. They are usually pretty nice and friendly, but also it is a very small shop and LOTs of people tend to come as it gets later in the mornings or on the weekends, so they might seem a bit rushed. Ambiance: It is very casual and very local. The facilities are old and could use an upgrade, and to some, it may seem gross (just cause its old not cause it's unsanitary) but to me, it's like a sort of time-capsule like place. It has been almost exactly the same as when I first when I was in elementary school. Not too much seating, but also not really the kind of place where you stay and eat. Parking: Not very much of it. I moved to Hermosa Beach thirty three years ago. I was in heaven when I found Best Donuts. Kim and Henry (the previous owners) really cared about their customers and the quality of their food. I miss them. When the new owners took over at first the were friendly and the food flavor maintained the great flavor. Fast forward to the last few months.. I'm never going back and below are my reasons. 1) We adore Sofia (the M-F girl) she is super sweet and always greets us with a big smile. 2) The baker/s Monday - Thursday are not consistent. The flavor is dry, little to no icing on the glazed. 3) The other girls (owners) not so sweet and hardly never smiles. We (my husband and I) getting the feeling they are feel as though they are doing us a favor by waiting on us. 4) I've been trying not to eat so many sweets but I can't give up my morning sweets to I switched from getting a glazed or glazed twist to a few donut holes. Over the last few months, I've seen the amount of holes go from 5-6 for 0.50 cents to 2 holes. WOW...yes, really. 5) We go on the weekend mornings for our sweet fix (when the other owners are working) there is often no parking. At first I'd think, WOW..they must be packed in there but nooooo they take up the front store parking for themselves. I don't understand how owners of a business thinks its ok to be so inconsiderate to their customers. Last week, I witnessed an elderly lady park her car over by the grocery store and walked over (more like hobbled, she had a brace on her leg) but I guess she really wanted her donut fix too. Not the best donuts.. Took a drive to this place and I'm sorry to report that it wasn't worth the gas. Nice enough service, the employee was actually pretty friendly. The inside was old school and the decor was run which didn't help either.... but the kicker was the chocolate, it tasted a little like plastic and the donuts were kinda dry. The main lady behind the counter, who I assume is the owner, is by far the most miserable person I've ever dealt with in food service. I shit you not last week I got a text to add more doughnuts to our order and she had already taken her plastic glove off and looked at me like she wanted to stab me in the face because I had the audacity to ask for another dozen and just let the glove fall out of her hand. If you happen to have the kind of nuanced taste buds that can differentiate from many donuts then you may have missed your calling and should probably quit that job at the bank and become the worlds foremost donut expert. Best crumb cake donuts I've had. They're the perfect combo of flavor and crunchy texture with just the right amount of moisture in the middle. They have a combo with a bacon, egg, & cheese croissant, one donut, and a small coffee for less than $8 and it's my favorite on the weekends! My hotel window berrated me with the Best Donuts sign all night long for a week. I fought it as long as I could but finally acquiesced. I walked into a lovely display of freshly baked "dough"nuts neatly arranged as pretty as Christmas decorations. It was midday and they still had every flavor you could imagine. Glazed, frosted, cake, twisted, EVERYTHING, it was like pornagraphy for the tastebuds. I am a purist and chose my lifelong friend glazed donut. The dough was yummy, not too thin, not too bland, no lard aftertaste left in the mouth. The glaze was heavenly. Soft and gently sweet but not too sweet which other places use as a mask for their not so good batter. Best Donuts makes me realize all the things that are wrong about those fast food donut chains. Best has no bling, no flash, no fancy falsities, just delicious baked goods. And THAT is where I want my money invested, in the food, not in the flash. This donuts shop has been around for many years and is open 24/7. It is located on the corner of a busy intersection (PCH & Artesia). It was my go to place to grab a pink calorie buster box to share with my co-workers. No-frills here, basic donuts and very dark, bitter coffee. Shop is run-down and could certainly use a little TLC. I guess it wouldn't bother me as much if the service was warm and fuzzy, but I haven't experienced that. The few people (I'm assuming it's family owned) who I have seen here are grouchy and seem uninterested in helping me. The last couple of times I've been here I was very disappointed and a little grossed out. Nothing looked fresh, not even the guys apron. There were bugs inside the donut case, some resting on the maple bars (yuck!). I know I shouldn't be consuming donuts on a regular basis, but I am looking for a new place to try out.
