We visited the Best Steakhouse for first time after seeing one of Tyler Perry's premiere stage plays at Fox Theater on N. Grand (across the street). It has been a very long time since I visited this restaurant. We were going to the symphony hall afterwards and decided to go. We parked on at Powell symphony hall parking lot and walked to the restaurant. It would be difficult to find a space on the street, without paying. Reservations are not needed, so be prepared to stand in line and be prepared to know what you want when called. The cooks seem to remember your order and how to prep the steaks, amazing. The ambiance is a little dim and the seating is outdated. We were able to find a table to eat in the back of the restaurant, it seems to be pretty expansive. We did not have a particular waitstaff, someone would come around to fill your glass. We both ordered steak, medium. The order came with a baked potato, toasted bread and butter and a salad with Italian dressing. The steak had good flavor, it was chewy, as if a lot of membranes. The potatoes were cooked perfect and the salad was also crispy and good. We shared a slice of carrot cake which was moist and delicious. Big shout out to the folks at The Best Steak House‼ our first visit at The Best Steak House, as my husband and I were walking in, it became busy, so quick. I finally made it to the infamous Best Steak House! Finally no line, finally a chance to see the hype. Walking in I had no direction and no understanding of how this cafeteria style line works. Apparently you read the menu quickly because all you hear is next! That means yell out your order so you can let the cook know what he is cooking next. Grab your tray, utensils and dessert of cakes if you choose before you get to the register. You wait right there until your food is cooked , pay and then sit down in restaurant. I ordered a pork chop dinner which consists of 2 chops, baked potato and Texas toast. Meat was bland no seasoning. Dessert I ordered a chocolate slice of cake. A lot of icing but ok. Came here with someone around 8pm on a Wednesday night. Wasn't busy at all which was nice with my anxiety of not feeling rushed to decide on what I wanted to eat. Haven't been to this place in 10+ years but the customer service was exceptional. I will add during peak hours especially around lunch time and when the fox therate is open it can be crowded. I ordered a steak and chicken dinner with a side salad and baked potatoe with Texas toast. As a sweet treat I got a cherry cheesecake. I took off a star simply because I don't like fatty parts of meat and my steak was just that. The chicken was well seasoned and the sauce that it comes marinating in was nice. The cheesecake as well. The best steak house was yummy and located right across the street from Fox Theater. Parking was a little hard to find, but we lucked up on a spot right in front at a meter. This is a cafeteria style restaurant that serves up steak dinners, and they are known for their "tip potatoes," which are loaded with cheese and grilled onions. Came here for lunch, after seeing several other people purposefully heading inside. We were wandering aimlessly, before going to a show at Fox Theater. We got in line and started checking out the menu, when suddenly the line started yelling out orders. The people in front of us started shouting out their meat order along with the way they wanted it prepared. That was a little intimidating, but we quickly followed suit. We both got gyros. I had okra, my daughter got fries. Everything moved quickly, and each person on the line asked us for the portions of the meal they were in charge of. It went by in a blur. The staff was very nice, the food was generously portioned, we ordered more than we needed. Everything was clean and efficient, and the food was delicious. When I heard I was going to the Best Steak House, cafeteria style was the furthest thing from my mind. But baby was it the best lunch for me. When you see the cafeteria line and how old the restaurant is, you think the environment won't be as nice but it looked great in there with plenty of booths and tables. I was told to know my order but still got overwhelmed by choices. The cooks do not play around so I got it together and yelled out my order when they said "NEXT". Then you watch as your steak is made and ready to be placed between two slices of Texas toast. I also had tip potatoes (like home fries with cheese and onions) and fried okra. Tonight, I wanted steak and my family decided on a local favorite, Best Steak House. Previously known for its quality service, tasty food, and affordable prices, much has changed since my last visit. Tonight, we ordered three T-bone steak meals for about $74 (very pricey). To our surprise, the food was extremely bland. The steaks were cooked very well. The baked potatoes were still hard; not a pat of butter or a pinch of salt in sight. Fries had no salt. There was absolutely no flavor on the steak; no seasoning, nothing at all but a pool of steak juice at the bottom of the container. You only knew what you were eating based on the change in texture. Imagine a nice picture of a steak meal in a magazine spread. Well, I'm sure the printed paper in the magazine had more flavor. Safe to say, definitely not on places to return any time soon. read more

Run by only the 2nd generation of the founder, you have to experience it at least once. Located across the street from The Fox, it's perfect if you have theater tickets, symphony tickets, an event at the Sheldon, or whenever. You stand in a somewhat long line but goes fast. You need to make up your mind quickly because the cooks will yell NEXT!....NEXT!....NEXT! to the people standing in line. By the time you get up toward the front, your meal is handed to you and they are asking you for your drink order. It's cafeteria style in that they have salads and desserts there to take while waiting for your main meal. The plates are the best value as they come with a large baked potato and a piece of Texas Toast. The prices are decent for what you get. This certainly isn't high brow quality. When my friend's mom was a student at SLU, this was her favorite place to eat, so my friend and I came 20+ years later to try it out! You walk through a cafeteria like set up where you can grab desserts, drinks, etc. while you wait for your main dish to cook. I ordered the T-Bone Dinner which came with a baked potato and Texas toast. To be honest, the best thing here is the Texas toast which was crunchy and flavorful on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. The baked potato was fine. I never had one with just butter before and I can definitely see why people do it. The T-Bone was tender ish but you can tell that the steak isn't very high quality. I didn't really like how much fatty portions there were and you definitely need to eat this with some kind of sauce as the steak itself doesn't have a ton of flavor. Is this the best steakhouse? Honestly, not really. Maybe the best Texas toast house but the steak is very okay in my opinion. This place has charm! It is near (walking distance) from all the Grand Center venues. When you walk in, there's a line. You have to shout out your order and by the time you get to the register it is ready. I had the weekend special, which is a T-bone steak, 5 fried shrimp, baked potato, and garlic toast. My husband had a porterhouse and had a side of okra. The food highlights were the shrimp, okra, and baked potato. The shrimp is really good in an old timey way. The okra was good and crisp, not greasy. The baked potato tasted like one. If I go back, I will skip the steak. Not sure why the t bone and porterhouse were so grisly and overcooked, but it was. I've been going to the Best Steakhouse for over 30 years now. When I was a kid it was one of the places my mom and I went would frequent often with her best friend and daughter. When I became a young adult my friends and I would also go before a concert at the Fox theater(right across the street). I can't count how many times I've been here. Recently I was visiting home and my mom wanted steakhouse, now I haven't been since moving away 10 years ago. So I said what the hell let's do it....Lol We were going to a jazz show down the street so it was perfect. Went it and it was just as I remembered, like I don't think anything had changed and I was perfectly okay with that. I didn't get my order in as quickly as Mr. Neeeext(rip) would have got it in but service still moved fast. Ordered the chicken plate and tip potatoes with onions. It was still as I remember delicious!! I still don't know what the secret sauce on the chicken is but whatever it is it does the trick everytime. Places like this have been in the city for years and served generations. I went on a Tuesday evening, oddly many restaurants are closed on that day--anybody know why?--but not BSH. It was already 8:15PM and customers still left and came as I entered the establishment. I quickly ordered a pork chop sandwich and a steak sandwich. I decided to change from dinning in to take out. No problem, just had to walk over to the take out counter to pay for my order. Less than $10.00!! I took my order outside and decided to eat it at the car, a dance competition going on at the park just around the corner. As I started to enjoy my Pork Chop Sandwich, I was approached by Raymond, a 55year old STL original. We started a conversation and I gave him the steak sandwich. This unassuming steakhouse across from the Fox theater is not to be missed. It's cafeteria style, you read the menu board and yell out your order. I had the best burger which is a hamburger on texas toast. It was possibly the best burger I have ever eaten. I also had fries. Real fries, served hot and delicious. I'm not sure how late this place is open, but this would be the epitome of a late night drunk dinner. When you walk in there is a easy to read menu, they ask your order and then 2 guys crank it out. The speed and quality of service is great, the food looks and tastes awesome. I ordered the burger and that's exactly what you get. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5, is the steak that came with the chicken and steak combo was a little fatty and undercooked for my husband's liking, but that is what he gets for not ordering it well done. We were worried that we wouldn't be able to find a seat with all the people in the restaurant, but somehow it works out to be a steady flow of people finishing and leaving as others are looking for a seat. Cashier will get your drink and then you can wander off with your tray to find a booth or table Since it is across from fox theater plan your visit accordingly.
