Porter House, Baked Potato, Texas Toast, Dinner Salad

The Best Steakhouse Is Back With Quality Steaks. The Quality Of Meat Is Wonderful. My Steak Was Nice And Tender. Well Done And Not Burnt To A Crisp. The Best Steak House Service Was Top Notch. The Best Steak House Is One Of A Kind Which Makes The Location Original With A Lot Of History. NEXT

The ordering process was a little confusing but the price matches the food. Good quick bite before going to a show in the Theater!

Came here with someone around 8pm on a Wednesday night. Wasn't busy at all which was nice with my anxiety of not feeling rushed to decide on what I wanted to eat. Haven't been to this place in 10+ years but the customer service was exceptional. I will add during peak hours especially around lunch time and when the fox therate is open it can be crowded. I ordered a steak and chicken dinner with a side salad and baked potatoe with Texas toast. As a sweet treat I got a cherry cheesecake. I took off a star simply because I don't like fatty parts of meat and my steak was just that. The chicken was well seasoned and the sauce that it comes marinating in was nice. The cheesecake as well. Glad to see this plave is still up and running after so many years. As always until next time...

Such good food always! We did a to go order and it was fresh and hot upon arrival. It wasn't a busy time so we got lucky.

I hate giving negative reviews , and it actually takes a lot for me to get to this point ........ But The Best Steakhouse may never see me again lol I waited 27 minutes for a steak sandwich with cheese. The bread at the bottom was hard the top was semi moist and it was bland. The staff drank sodas on the line , arguing about who knows what and the two cashiers kept sitting down between each order. One was on her phone cursing via FaceTime. I was ticket 76 and the light skin brother cooked his friends food before mine (3 plates ticket 77 & 78) I was hesitant about posting but with the location and proximity to tourist attractions, I genuinely want visitors to be impressed with our food scene and we are capable of better ? Right ? The fries were good tho ...... Food was ordered at 7:01 , Received at 7:28 (12-11-2024) 4 consumers in lobby (I was the leading ticket) 8 workers between grill and cashier Rating 1/5

Came here for lunch, after seeing several other people purposefully heading inside. We were wandering aimlessly, before going to a show at Fox Theater. We got in line and started checking out the menu, when suddenly the line started yelling out orders. The people in front of us started shouting out their meat order along with the way they wanted it prepared. That was a little intimidating, but we quickly followed suit. We both got gyros. I had okra, my daughter got fries. Everything moved quickly, and each person on the line asked us for the portions of the meal they were in charge of. It went by in a blur. The staff was very nice, the food was generously portioned, we ordered more than we needed. Everything was clean and efficient, and the food was delicious. We will definitely come back and add this to our out of town stops. I also had lemon meringue pie and have to recommend that too! It's a busy diner - and clearly popular with locals. Glad we happened onto it!

The food is cooked to order, cafeteria style

The best steak house was yummy and located right across the street from Fox Theater. Parking was a little hard to find, but we lucked up on a spot right in front at a meter. This is a cafeteria style restaurant that serves up steak dinners, and they are known for their "tip potatoes," which are loaded with cheese and grilled onions. The staff was nice and helpful once we made it to our table. They were super busy, so waiting in line to order took quite some time. The food was delicious, so it was worth the wait. The establishment had booths and tables to choose from.

Steak Sandwich Combo and Tip Potoatoes

When I heard I was going to the Best Steak House, cafeteria style was the furthest thing from my mind. But baby was it the best lunch for me. When you see the cafeteria line and how old the restaurant is, you think the environment won't be as nice but it looked great in there with plenty of booths and tables. I was told to know my order but still got overwhelmed by choices. The cooks do not play around so I got it together and yelled out my order when they said "NEXT". Then you watch as your steak is made and ready to be placed between two slices of Texas toast. I also had tip potatoes (like home fries with cheese and onions) and fried okra. Everything was delicious! I can't wait to go back. The service was quick and efficient. Everyone was kind and fell into the line perfectly. Make sure you know your order, pay attention, and be ready for a great piece of steak!

Lovely place just as it's always been for years. One of the staples and important cultural pieces of STL. Great menu, cafeteria style which is cool. Vast seating arrangements cause they can get full very fast! Bathroom area smells very bad, horrid in fact. But that's to be expected in Mid-City eateries in any city. Called in an order for a steak sandwich and it was so delicious. I didn't get to take a pic of the food before I DEVOURED my food so do take this review with a grain of salt. Sometimes the quality is so good, it just can't be documented.

Service line

I give it 4 Stars, not for the quality but for the ambience, the experience and it's been a St Louis institution since 1964. Of you've never been, it's a riot. Run by only the 2nd generation of the founder, you have to experience it at least once. Located across the street from The Fox, it's perfect if you have theater tickets, symphony tickets, an event at the Sheldon, or whenever. You stand in a somewhat long line but goes fast. You need to make up your mind quickly because the cooks will yell NEXT!....NEXT!....NEXT! to the people standing in line. By the time you get up toward the front, your meal is handed to you and they are asking you for your drink order. It's cafeteria style in that they have salads and desserts there to take while waiting for your main meal. The plates are the best value as they come with a large baked potato and a piece of Texas Toast. The prices are decent for what you get. This certainly isn't high brow quality. May even be a step below a Ponderosa Steak House or of the like. But, it's quick, inexpensive, and fun. Being a St. Louis institution you have to try it!

T-T - Bone Steak

When my friend's mom was a student at SLU, this was her favorite place to eat, so my friend and I came 20+ years later to try it out! You walk through a cafeteria like set up where you can grab desserts, drinks, etc. while you wait for your main dish to cook. I ordered the T-Bone Dinner which came with a baked potato and Texas toast. To be honest, the best thing here is the Texas toast which was crunchy and flavorful on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. The baked potato was fine. I never had one with just butter before and I can definitely see why people do it. The T-Bone was tender ish but you can tell that the steak isn't very high quality. I didn't really like how much fatty portions there were and you definitely need to eat this with some kind of sauce as the steak itself doesn't have a ton of flavor. Is this the best steakhouse? Honestly, not really. Maybe the best Texas toast house but the steak is very okay in my opinion. I guess this would be a fun, quick, and cheap eat if you're here to watch a show, symphony, etc.

salmon pasta and Tito's slushie

The pasta was great the salmon was seasoned really well and the pasta had just the right amount of sauce.

Gotta love this place across from The Fabulous Fox Theater! Next! Next! Next! Be ready to yell your order to the cook upon entering. A prompt cook on the grill will yell out asking for your order.... just yell it back. This is a '70's style thin steak house.... with a lot of character! I love the Monterey chicken plate with a baked potato and Texas toast. What a tasty lunch! Next!

My filet au poivre and my husband's French dip were forgettable at best. My steak was overcooked (ordered medium rare and came out close to medium well). With such a lean cut of meat, the overcooking of it ruined it. The Au poivre sauce which likely had cognac needed to be cooked off as it was extremely bitey (and salty). There was no peppery flavor at all. My cocktail, on the other hand, was delicious and well made (old fashioned) and our server was efficient, helpful, and timely. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere. I've had the crab cake before so I didn't get it this time, and it's as good as people say. It is huge and can be shared with at LEAST two people. I'd likely visit again but I'll probably stay away from these two entrees next time.

We all arrived fairly close together, so we just started filling in seats as we arrived. The had us at the back of the restaurant at a banquet seat with tables and additional seats on the outside. It was a little tight, but we worked it out. The hostess was nice when welcoming us in and getting us going. Our server was Tera, she had our large group plus other tables, so she was doing her best to coordinate. We shared menu's, they had regular menus and special menus for Valentines Day. Tara was great with keeping track of the couples when ordering. I ordered the Butcher Board as an appetizer to share with others. Everyone really enjoyed it, especially the toasted bread. The salami, sausage and Braunschweiger. There was a buffalo chicken terrine that was different but good. Grain mustard aioli and house made pickles rounded out the board. I also ordered a cherry margarita as my first of two drinks. The second one was a Hugo Spritz. Both were ok, not great. I ordered the Tenderloin from the Valentine menu. It came with fingerling potatoes and green beans with a sauce. It was delicious! The beef so tender and flavorful. The meal was superb. To go packaging was great and came in a brown bag with handles that makes it easy to carry. We had a great time, great food and service.

There was a 20-30 minute wait so we found seats at the bar and ordered cocktails. Very good. Very strong. The Block is a great space. Tall ceilings, warm & inviting, perhaps a little low lighting for us challenged folks, but nice, easy to read menus made up for it. A busser brought us water and shortly behind him was Laura-Beth, (our server) with a big smile and menus. After explaining the menu, specials, and taking our drink orders she left us to think about our choices. The menu is a little limited but includes sandwiches as well as entrees including fish option.. Being a "butcher" restaurant we both opted for the ribeye, medium rare. The steak comes only with fries which I ordered while my date went for whipped potatoes. I also went for a side of spinach. We also split a Block Salad as a starter. Choosing to split the Block Salad was a good idea. It was more than enough for two. It was great version of a chopped salad with fresh greens, bacon, smoked ham, egg, house-smoked cheddar, tomatoes, red onion, dressed with just enough buttermilk dressing. Really enjoyed it and just the right amount of salad. Only criticism is not salt and pepper on the table. Probably by design but disappointing. Next came our steaks and sides. We both ordered medium-rare. Her steak was a little under but close enough. My steak was raw in the center. I should have said something but there wasn't so much it was inedible for me. Better under than over! The seasoned fries were good and the whipped potatoes very good were delicious. The fresh spinach was cooked perfect, but under seasoned. All in all, good sides. We finished with Irish Coffee and vanilla ice cream. Kudos to the staff A special thank you to our server Laura-Beth. You were spot on friendly, courteous, attentive, and made our evening great and not just good. Overall, a good place, A bit expensive but where isn't these days. Well worth a try if you haven't.

When we were debating which cuts to order, she delivered a detailed explanation of each one, and even brought a platter of them out for us to see. Definitely an upscale place, so budget for that. Here's what we got: Roasted Bone marrow: 8/10 - came with quite a few bones, and the marrow was rich and buttery. It truly was a melt in your mouth experience, and with the addition of the arugula and red onions on the side, it was lovely. Brussels sprouts: 9/10 - these had such a lovely flavor to them and the honey Dijon sauce was delicious. We prefer Brussels a little more charred but otherwise these were a hit. Garlic mashed potatoes with Boursin: 100/10 - SO good. Best mashed potatoes we've ever had. You HAVE to add the cheese, it's so worth it. They're ridiculously creamy, flavorful, and overall, just tasty. Broccolini: 7.5/10 - this was average. We wanted them charred a bit more and also more red pepper flakes. It mostly just tased like lemon, but it wasn't bad. Australian Wagyu filet: 8.5/10 - A cheaper version of Japanese Wagyu, this cut is super tender and delicious. But don't expect it to melt in your mouth like the Japanese ones. Snowbeef Wagyu 4oz: 10/10 - The beef just melted in my mouth. The marbling on this cut is exquisite and it is SO rich. You honestly don't need more than 3-4oz if you're getting sides. It's that rich. Overall, we definitely recommend this place. The mashed potatoes especially were enough to make us want to come back.

Down Home Shrimp $26 - 3 large pieces of shrimp on top of mouth watering mash potato like sauce that you want to lick clean. You can add on additional shrimp. Single Cut Prime Rib 16oz $66 - It was cooked perfectly medium rare and very tender. I didn't love that it sat in a pool of au jus, but was delicious. Brussels sprouts $15 - Large portion, more than plenty for 4 people. It was tender and very saucy. Garlic Mashed potatoes $16 - Semi-lumpy mashed potato with bits of skin. I was hoping it might be served with gravy similar to the shrimp sauce, but there was no companion. Cheesecake with blueberry sauce $16 - Large piece of cheesecake, very rich and smooth. It was nice that the dessert selected by the birthday guest was complimentary. If you dine here and park in the lot behind 801 Fish, you can get your parking ticket validated at 801 Fish. Highly recommend this dish any day! My boyfriend opted for the NY Strip; we both agreed it was one of the best steaks we'd ever had; seasoned perfectly and cooked masterfully. There was a slight mishap whereby a food runner gave him a tasting portion of the strip (likely meant for another table); we first didn't realize and were very disappointed with the size. However, without a word from us, the chef came out and personally explained, apologized, and corrected--I didn't snap a photo of the full portion when it came out, but it was perfect and much more what we expected. That brings me to the service, which was spectacular. Several staff members gave us a personal touch and they all seemed to be genuinely happy to be there. The space is beautiful and intimate. It was moderately busy and still quiet. The atmosphere feels upscale, but not pretentious or unapproachable. This place was on my radar for a long time, and I sure wish I'd gone long ago. I ordered the 4oz filet Oscar style. The meat was tender and very well seasoned, the crab was fresh, and the homemade hollandaise really pulled it all together. My husband had the ribeye. It was a flavorful cut, a little fatty (as ribeye tends to be), but exactly what you'd expect from that cut. The steaks come with a twice-baked potato and vegetable (or you can swap for different vegetables). The potato was flavorful but fairly dense. We also did the bread service - it was good, but felt a bit pricey for the portion. We ended with the flourless chocolate torte, which was very rich and the perfect way to finish the meal - especially on Valentine's Day. Overall, the food was good and the menu is solid.
