So, I believe that part of my complaint here will be for something I'm sure they were trying to make special for our group of 7. They put us upstairs in a room. This was great in that we could converse with no issues, but it was too warm in the room. They had fans, but we had to turn the fans away from blowing on our food, hence we didn't get cooled down from them. The food wasn't that great either. I ordered the Chicharron and though the tostones underneath were DELICIOUS, the fried pork belly on top (and there was a lot), seemed undercooked to me. It was chewy, not crispy as I've experienced it before. I was unable to eat most of it. The cocktails were delicious and the service was as good as can be expected considering he was having to go up and down the stairs each time. Maybe they're better for dinner? Service was generally attentive, but having to go find a server when you need him could be better. We happen to come during happy hour (Wed-Sun from 3p-6p) and took advantage of the $8 cocktails and 2 for $8 empanadas. Empanadas (2 for $8 happy hour price) - The steak was a special empanada, cheese and guava was the favorite, and mushroom was also good. Maybe we went on an off night, but I wanted to like this place much more than I actually did. Our server was very, very slow and seemed to forget things (maybe she worked a double?) and food took forever. Everything was pretty pricey, which I understand for things like lobster (which I got), but at least beef up the sides to help it feel like a full entree. The four of us had dinner here for our first time. We all tried the various soups to start and they were each very good. My favorite was the gluten free lobster bisque, which is rare to find in GF. Then we shared salads and a few other little things. As we were eating I asked about bread and butter. The answer surprised me a little, as it was $2.00. Thinking that I would find some sort of unique bread and as wonderful as the rest of the food, to my great surprise there were 4 pieces of grilled Chibatta (sp). Quite ordinary and tasteless, which had me puzzled. First of all, why charge for basic bread and that was almost bland? I casually asked the owner as she made her way to say hi to her guests about the bread. She said that this was expensive bread and that was why the charge. The cost was ok, but.... About a week earlier, we ate at Truffles and I happily paid $4.00 for 4 different unique sorts of breads that were outstanding. Yes, a silly detail about the really wonderful dinner here, but I think this weakest link in their menu should be revisited if it is to represent this restaurant. Ok enough about that. We were here for brunch on Saturday. There was no street parking so we parked in Schnucks parking lot across from the restaurant. I made a reservation online couple days ago, but it wasn't really busy when we arrived. This is definitely a kid friendly restaurant since I noticed they have a changing table in their bathroom and high chairs. The wait staff here was very kind and hard working. He seated us, took our order and brought food to our table along with 2 other tables. Although he was really busy, he still came to check on us a few time. We were really happy with the service here. The restaurant was relatively small but very charming. I think it's actually a very cute spot for a date. I started off with a mimosa. It came with variety of flavors such as orange, mango, pineapple, and I went with mango. It didn't taste like mango at all but the drink was good. We got the shrimp ceviche for appetizer. I came with rice but we didn't touch the rice at all. The rice was pretty fluffy and aromatic but a toast bread would make a better combo in our opinion. My friend got a grilled salmon sandwich. The bread was a little burnt but it didn't affect the taste. Salmon was cooked just right. The sauce was very yummy. I got the Lomo Saltado with French fries and white rice. I also ordered extra eggs on the side. They didn't make the eggs as I expected. However my stomach was happy with how the beef was marinated and cooked. I stopped in here before a Yelp event for a quick light bite. The reviews really stood out to me and I had to try it! I only ordered the Patacones Rellenos with shrimp because I had decided in advance and I LOVE plantains. The in house menu is so much more noteworthy than the online menu. It made one tough decision let me tell you! The plantains were cooked perfectly crispy, a bit too salty. The shrimp had wonderful flavor but was overpowered by a lot of raw onion on top. I will definitely be back with my husband to try out more of the menu but I may choose a different topping on the Patacones because of the onion. The lighting but bright yet warm at the same time. The kitchen is slightly open in the back. I loved how the fire heaters outside added a wonderful touch inside as well. It's cold AF out here and seems like a perfect time to start working my way down St. Louis Magazine's Best Soup list. I had some errands in Maplewood so Asador Del Sur it is! There's actually 2 soups on their menu - Lobster Bisque and Butternut Squash Cream, which got no love from St. Louis Mag but I wanted to try anyway. Their menu is an incredible journey through South American cuisine. Just getting soup was almost painful. There were so many delicious sounding dishes that I am absolutely certain I will be back. But I'm on a mission here so I got both soups, a side of grilled corn with chimichurri mayo and passionfruit mousse. I only have so much willpower. First I tried the star of my order: Lobster Bisque. Luxurious is the best word to describe how it feels in your mouth. Rich, complex and briny. There are so many layers to the flavor you just keep eating to experience it over and over. And a personal highlight: tender chunks of lobster. I can't say how many times I've had a good lobster bisque but the lobster is chewy and it kind of takes away from the overall quality of the soup. Not here. Overall a dish I would return for again. I'd love to say I was able to wait to eat the grilled corn but I love all grilled corn and I was kind of amped to try it with chimichurri mayo so that was next and it was delicious! And the overlooked Butternut Squash Cream? Ohhhhhh my. That is a sleeper hit and I want to talk to St. Louis Magazine because it may be a simpler bisque but it deserves its own mention. The passionfruit mousse was airy with a light, satisfying flavor. Definitely another dish worth returning to enjoy again. So I loved every dish I got (how many times can you say that?) and I was charmed by this cozy restaurant's ambiance. What a gem this place is! We randomly stopped by at 3pm on a Sunday after shopping in Brentwood. We were the only people dining so the service was excellent but more importantly, so was the food. We tried two empanadas to start: cheese and guava and mushroom (vegan!). Both were great but the cheese and guava was a stand out. For our mains, we tried the patacones (shrimp for me and carnitas for him) with a side of fried yucca. And finally, one more dulce de leche empanada which was absolutely decadent. There were a couple minor hiccups like my Lobster Bisque arriving the same time as my entree. But, after one sip of that savory creamy and slightly sweet Lobster Bisque and it could have arrived at any time durring my meal. We started with a pitcher of Sangria. It was clearly the way to go. Fresh chunks of fruit, not to sweet wine followed by a kick. It went well with the Empanadas that I strongly suggest everyone order. You could easily just order the empanadas and another starter and be set for a light dinner. The beef filling was well seasoned and almost rich, with a tender and crispy crust. I really enjoyed the Chimmichurri Chicken Thighs. They were grilled to perfection!! Charred, juicy and they went well with the Chimmichurri that is served on the side. Great food and super fast kitchen. We sat downstairs by the bar. Ambience is ok but there are a couple tables at the front near the window which looked really nice- ask for these specifically. The food is delicious and service was quite prompt. We were served by Maria- co owner of the restaurant. We had booked through open table and it was a special occasion, but the restaurant did not acknowledge it- not even a wish. That being said, every dish we ordered was stellar- for appetizer we got chicken empanada, chorizo lamb on stick which was served with amazing dipping sauce and the best of all- fried squid! For main course we couldn't resist the grilled langoustines and chicken Milanese ( it's like a cutlet topped with a fried egg)-Both excellent. Last night was our second visit here and once again, the place did not disappoint. So, during our first visit we were seated upstairs and we started with some cocktails. I'm not big on drinks that are sweet and although I enjoyed my cocktail, I traded it in for a glass of wine during our next round. Last night, however, we were seated downstairs by the big glass window/wall. I started with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile. It was good... Different but good. My husband had a cocktail. Then we shared the patacones rellenos with ground beef. It was tough deciding because we've had their empanadas during our first visit and it was really good and tasted homemade. The patacones we ordered delivered both in taste and quality so definitely no regrets there! The ground beef was so flavorful and delicious. If I have one sad moment, it would only be due to the presence of parsley because I absolutely dislike parsley. This, however, is no fault of the restaurant. I'll ask for no parsley next time. The fried plantain was so good and perfectly complimented by the toppings. For my main, I ordered the Entrana (skirt steak) served over mashed potatoes, chimichurri and a small side of roasted red peppers. The beef was well-seasoned and prepared properly (I asked for medium rare and got medium rare). I'm generally not into skirt steaks but they actually prepared it well enough that I didn't notice it was skirt steak. It was flavorful, juicy, and tender and the mashed potatoes were homemade and tasty. My first visit, I had the mahi mahi and thought it was delicious that I almost got the same thing last night but decided to try something new. This place has so many wonderful options and I feel like you can't really go wrong with any of them! My husband enjoyed his rice and lentils with some pork carnitas as well. He ate every bite of it! While we waited for our second round of drinks, I decided to order some flan for dessert. The flan was not overly sweet which is good and the caramel sauce was a wonderful complement. Our waiter was nice and had a lovely sense of humor. He came back to check on us a few times during our meal. The Encocado de mariscos had good flavor but is one of those dishes that tastes even better the next day so I was more impressed with the leftovers. Absolutely delicious! We came here for our anniversary and they were so kind! They wished us happy anniversary and brought us some complimentary champagne. We started off with the patacones rellenos with shrimp and they were perfectly fries and the shrimp on top was so tender. We split 2 entrees - the langostinos and the steak with rice and beans. We were both so excited for the chimichurri sauce. We weren't exactly sure how to eat the langostinos, but once we finally got to the meat of them, they were SO juicy and tender. We devoured every last piece of the meat. The steak was tender and juicy and the chimichurri sauce with it was so good. I was pretty excited to try this place out because last time I came they were all booked out so I made sure to call ahead and get a reservation. The staff was all extremely nice, but I have to say that the food was very okay. - Skirt Steak (Entrana) with Fries - I was pretty disappointed with this steak as it was one of their most well-known dishes. I liked the presentation of it as it was coiled like a snail shell, but I thought the steak was too chewy and didn't have a lot of flavor at medium-rare. The fries were also very okay, the outer edges were not very crispy. - Mahi Mahi - This was definitely my favorite entree of the night, and honestly would give this place a 4 star if it wasn't for the skirt steak. I thought the Mahi Mahi was very tender and I appreciated the outer "shell"/light-crunch flavor capsule thing. My favorite part of this dish, as weird as it is, was probably the rice though as it was slightly sour from the salsa. Overall, very okay meal. I always love argentine restaurants...that isn't exactly what Asador Del Sur is, but it is close, with some of the same dishes, particularly the entrana cut of skirt steak, which is hard to find otherwise it seems. Actually, Asador Del Sur kind of improves on what I am used to: it was a large, but manageable size steak, served with a side of rice and beans, which were delicious and I loved having the accompaniment--as much as I love that steak, I don't love eating an enormous portion or taking home leftovers. My wife had pulled pork patacones, and really enjoyed them. I didn't try, but they looked great and I trust her judgement that the pork was great. She also had the avocado salad, which was very nice. I started with the blood sausage, another favorite that is hard to find. It was outstanding, and a huge portion for $5! All the portions were good for the price...menu prices look a little high until you see what you get. I'm eager to return. read more

First time at this South American food restaurant. First started with drinks at the bar. Wish I could remember the name of the drink I had - but it was very good. We had a chicken and beef empanadas. We both liked the beef better than the chicken as it was really flavorful. For dinner I had the chimi slamon which was served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. My friend had the lamb chops which came with mashed sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes were delicious- I'd substitute them for the mashed potatoes next time. We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. There is seating upstairs as well as downstairs and it looks like there is a private dining room available also. Service was good as well. 1st let me say this was our 2nd trip here and We ordered 4 beef empanadas and some fries, our order was so full of grease it was draining off of all of it and pooling in the to go boxes this was not the case the 1st time we visited they were really good cooked well and great flavor tonight just super greasy and salty. Almost 40.00 with tip is a bit much for a greasy salty mess. We ended up throwing it out.
