We have stayed here twice before, once many years ago, and more recently about two years ago. Its always been a standard B.W. with nice rooms and a basic continental style breakfast. This time was different. We booked a pet friendly room with 2 queen beds, only to find out that the owners used the full hotel and a wedding (?) event as an excuse to.jack up the room price by over 30%!!! Final room charges with taxes was well over $225. Not a good experience in this already expensive time for family travel. Call us feeling used and abused. read more

Internet has gone from bad to worse over the past year. I had to complete a meeting earlier in the week on my phone's 5G because the WiFi here is so bad. This was an excellent stay! The rooms were so clean, I was expecting the worst since they allow dogs to stay (a very reasonable $25 extra), but it was really really clean. The sheets were immaculate - crisp, no weird stains, very comfortable. They provided everything you would need, including small things like shower caps and makeup wipes. There is even a potty area for your dog and poop bags are even provided. Everyone we talked to was friendly and provided great service. The breakfast was surprisingly good (6 to 9 am on weekdays). There's Tesla superchargers within walking distance too. Would come back in a heart beat. read more

We stayed here overnight on a trip to Tahoe for skiing. The room was nice, clean and warm. The mattresses were fine. No complaints about the room. The breakfast next morning, however, was disappointing and lacking. We came down at 6:30am when nobody else except one other lady was there yet. The yogurt machine wasn't ready and there were no sandwiches. The cereal selections included Raisin Bran and Cheerios. They had instant oatmeal, apple sauce cups, banana and hard boiled eggs. As we were waiting for sandwiches, a 3 person family who sat down after us was given priority for the sandwiches. The lady making them literally handed them over to this 3 person family sitting at their table instead of putting them down where the sandwiches go. I was fine with that except we were in a hurry. When I asked for them next (assuming she went by those who asked her first), she did not give it to me but put it in the sandwich section. At this time, there were 10 more people already. The problem is she only brought out three at a time. A lady took one and I took two for our family of four and I had to feel terrible about it. Later, I heard from the 3 person family that they didn't even want all the sandwiches. Needless to say, I am extremely unhappy about this breakfast experience. We left at 6:55am. Please tell the staff to have sandwiches ready at the breakfast hour at 6am as listed. Also please tell the staff not to hand sandwiches to people whilst there are other folks waiting for them. We stayed here last month for a work trip. I was so thankful they had a room with such short notice after we checked out of a filthy, smelly hotel a few doors down. I made reservations just minutes before arrival. I was relieved to smell bleach mixed with other cleaners. Beats the stale smoke at the other place. Our king room had laminate wood floors, colorful artwork, and a comfortable bed. There was a taqueria next door with a drive-through and lots of other food choices nearby. Auburn is a town over & what was perfect about this Best Western's location is that it's literally around the corner from the road that leads straight to Foresthill. Nice & clean hotel. Friendly customer service. Typical roadside hotel - no frills kinda place. We didn't notice any sound coming from the freeway being so close as other reviewers said. The room was nice, clean, and odor free. They had pergo flooring or something else other than carpet, which was nice. At first, I thought the bed was too soft and I would feel it in the morning, but to my surprise, no backache or neck kink. All is well! LOL. Complimentary breakfast - make your own waffles, Jimmy Dean sausage muffin, cereal, oatmeal, bananas, oranges, bucket of cooked sausages. I have to say I was not expecting the great stay that we had! When we arrived the staff were super friendly and accommodating. So let's get to the nitty gritty... The property: You are right off the freeway but you can't hear it (well, I didn't), walkable to more than 1 restaurant and a little grocery. Pool and spa are still closed but who knows long that will last? The room: the interior looked like it had just had a major remodel. - hardwood floors! YES! - heat lamp and strong fan in the bathroom - two vanity sinks w/ small window nearby - comfy beds! - line for drying clothes that extends in shower - great water pressure - good sized room - CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! Keep in mind some rooms have a table and 2 chairs, some don't. If you need the extra seating, confirm with the desk staff. Also, the Awful Annie's next door has amazing food! ENJOY! read more

The employees were friendly and the room was clean. Mattress could use an upgrade. Breakfast sandwiches (sausage patty/cheese) were advertised but only 2 breakfast sandwiches were brought out at a time and rather slowly. We wanted to stay in Grass Valley; but, the price of hotels there was out of our budget. Best Western suggested Golden Key hotel 22 miles from our destination at about half the price. When we checked-in we were assigned a room on the second floor, no elevator. We are in our 70s and do not do stairs very well. The staff quickly got on their computers and found us a ground floor room. In our younger days we stayed in a lot of Best Western hotels. We were able to park just outside the door to our room. The room was everything we remember a Best Western to be, a clean comfortable room. It took me a few minutes to figure our how to make the air conditioner work, and, by setting the fan on low, it was not too noisy, almost like white noise. The only real negative was the temperature control in the shower. While taking a shower the water temperature varied from almost too hot to cold, just like hotel showers did 50 years ago. The complimentary breakfast is about what I expected in this pandemic times. Almost everything was pre-package: bread, bagels, muffins, pastries, yogurt, and bananas. I had a toasted bagel with cream cheese, pastry, yogurt, and orange juice. I did not try the coffee. As we were checking out, we told the clerk that we were eating breakfast at the restaurant next door, she gave us a 10% discount coupon to use at the restaurant. We now have a place to stay when we are visiting the Auburn CA area. read more

Update: I got a survey from the hotel about my stay and I let them know what I thought of our entire transaction. I figured I'd never hear back as one rarely does with those surveys. Imagine my surprise when the manager sent me an email. She apologized for the way the situation was handled, they're going to work on providing better customer service in the future. She issued a full refund and made sure my points were put back into my account (I used points towards my stay). She delivered on what she promised and I feel that should be acknowledged. Would I try staying there again in the future? Perhaps. But I think I'd wait awhile before booking in the hopes that the staff has had better training by then or new staff to replace the incompetent ones. I'm still not impressed with being told not once but TWICE by two different staff members that the people waiting to check in were far more important than a customer calling in. Had they held me with as much regard this whole thing could've been avoided as I tried calling the day before our arrival to warn them in advance that the snow might prevent us from getting over the pass (the storm pattern changed, a small storm became larger than originally anticipated). I called again from the road to let them know it was closed and we were going to try another route. Nope. Too busy to take that call as well. They always sound overwhelmed when answering the phone. Does not instill confidence in the business, ya know? But I got my refund and my points returned. So I'm grateful for that. read more

I'm giving this hotel a 1-star. Room #128 at the Best Western Golden Key in Auburn, California smells like Urine. We informed the front desk representative. He said there's nothing they can do about it as their hotel is booked. We asked him to call the manager. She (name unknown) said there's nothing she can do. In the meantime, I requested some air freshener . That worked for maybe 5 minutes. We spoke on the phone with Courtney, from Best Western Customer Service directly following our conversation with the front desk. Courtney's suggestion was to have him change the sheets or go to another hotel. She said Best Western could not pay for it in either situation. I-80 is closed. We can't just leave unless someone either refunded us for this reservation or they pay for us to stay somewhere else. This is super inconvenient on a Grand scale. If they remedy our situation in any way, before we depart, I will upgrade the 1-Star to an appropriate rating. read more

The employees were very friendly, the room was clean (and smelled clean), the grounds were very clean and well kept, there was no trash on the ground, there was no riff raff, and there were quite a few guests who attended the nice breakfast spread provided by the staff. The pool was clean, the water was clear and blue, and the guests were actually using it! Everytime I went outside I observed an employee engaged in cleaning or grounds keeping. Not one issue with the room, the bed, the fridge, the bathroom, or the TV. The staff also had fresh homemade cookies in the lobby. I passed on several hotels and inns in favor of this place, and I am 100% not disappointed that I did....cheers!! read more

The staff was nothing but warm and welcoming the whole time. We stayed a couple nights for a more affordable base camp for skiing. There is a pool and hot tub but they are both closed not sure if it's weather, repair, or covid related. The breakfast room has a pretty full variety buffet style breakfast, I was impressed considering a lot of higher priced hotels are handing out gross pastries. The place has simple rooms that don't feel too crowded for 2. We stayed upstairs and only heard a neighbor once, our immediate neighbor slammed the door so hard the building shook the first night we were there, woke us up from a deep sleep. The beds are firm but still comfortable, the blackout curtains do well but could stand to be longer if you are super sensitive to light. The water pressure is typical for California and warm enough but my shower was definitely not hot. The hotel is clearly trying to keep updating but you can tell the structure is older. You will hear road noise all day and all night, if you are sensitive to this this place may not work for you. read more

Had a long day and knew I wouldn't make it back to San Francisco. I stayed here a while back and remembered a comfortable stay. That hasn't changed. Check-in went smoothly with a friendly gentleman behind the counter. The room was clean and well appointed. The bed was comfortable, the shower great, and the breakfast had many offerings. There initially was a problem with the TV but the gentleman who checked me in quickly came to the room and fixed the issue (the power cord from the cable box got disconnected). Also, When did everyone start backing in to parking spaces so that when the run their engines for a half hour warm up the gas fumes go straight into the rooms? We have been trying to find a good hotel in Auburn and we have found the one. The shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are so luxurious and is exactly what we need after a long day of snowboarding. The water pressure is awesome and the water gets hot quick. We haven't gone in the hot tub but the pool area looks nice. They offer good breakfast and everything I enjoy-- bagels, yogurt, oatmeal, waffles, and strong coffee. Front desk is very friendly upon arrival and departure. read more

Stayed one night 2 adults, 2 children , 3 small dogs. Room had 2 queens and pergo floors. Perfect for dogs. I had to ask for assistance two times and they came quickly and solve the problem. When was TV didn't have sound. The first room AC wasn't working and they moved us to another room right away. The room was very clean and nice bedding. I would stay here again. The wife and I recently spent the weekend in Auburn, and found that the choices were someone limited when it comes to hotels. Since I have status with BW, I checked the yelp reviews on this one, and found it acceptable enough to make a reservation. While BW has tiers, in general they're fairly similar (although there are certainly some amazing exceptions). This one is definitely exactly what you'd expect from a BW lobby and room perspective. NIce breakfast area off the lobby (more on that in a sec), with free cookies at night on the first table. The rooms are, as I said, pretty standard, clean, with wide screen (42" ish) TVs on the wall. They are reasonably quiet, and while the AC/heater is old school, it works. The loss of a star was for one reason and one reason only. I'm not a kid. I really don't want cereal, or cereal, or cereal, or toast and cereal, or waffles toast and cereal, to be my breakfast choice (processed flour first thing in the morning? Or for that matter, any time? Nope). Most BW's have eggs and some form of breakfast meat available. This one has nada. Just processed flour-based products. NOT a winner. LUCKILY, Awful Annie's is right next door, solving that problem for us. So to wrap it up, typical BW, just go expecting that you're going to spend a bit more the next morning for breakfast than you normally would when staying at a BW. That said, Awful Annie's is awesome (see my Yelp review) so it's all good. read more

We went to Foresthill due to sad family circumstances and stayed at this hotel for one night. We were pleasantly surprised by this experience. I have very high standards as far as hotels are concerned and this place proved that the number of stars does not matter when there is an efficient staff who likes what they do. The room was sparkling clean, and everything including the sheets and bedding smelled freshly washed. The bed was comfortable and the amenity kit in the bathroom was spot-on. The staff was friendly at all times. Wifi and breakfast are included in the price and there is plenty of parking. The hotel is also conveniently located near the freeway. When we arrived our room was not ready yet so we went to have lunch at the Awful Annie's restaurant on the same street (they offer 15% if you are a guest at the hotel). I would stay here again. Booked a 1-night stay on their website with AAA rate. I called 1 day before arrival and asked if early check in was possible and the lady on the phone was really pleasant. Check in was smooth. Both women behind the counter wore masks and were friendly. Our room was neat and clean. The bed was comfortable enough but the pillows were half the standard size. Small shower. Great Wi-Fi. For a room that size, I don't think it needed 4 lamps. Breakfast: plenty of options but could use another hot item like scrambled eggs/sausage. I have to admit, I'm a bit perplexed by all of the 5 star ratings, but I also admit that I stay in a lot of hotels (because I work on hotels) and so perhaps my standards are different than the average person. That being said it is probably easier to just list the pros and cons of the hotel and let you decide for yourself. Pros: Friendly Helpful Front Desk Updated Room Clean Pet Friendly Good Water Pressure Cons: Sits right next to highway (you will hear it all night) Beds are older/cheaper (meaning if anyone on the bed moves, the whole thing shakes) The old air conditioner is not great (not terrible) Super bright lights coming from the bathroom (sleep with door closed) and main window, so if you need blackout conditions this will be difficult. Overall, for the price, I would have expected a little more, but it is certainly not a bad hotel. read more

Had to get away from fireworks. Had previously stayed at a hotel a few blocks away but chose this hotel because of the good reviews and it is pet friendly. The registering people were very welcoming. The room was very clean and pet dander and smell were not apparent. A breakfast is offered from 7-9 am and was quite a variety. Cold cereal, waffles, Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich, mini muffins, hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee, and juices. The temperature outside was 90* but there are trees and a lawn area next to the pool and hot tub that give relief from the heat. Even though fireworks are allowed in Auburn, we only heard a few safe and sane ones from across the highway. A Raleys supermarket is 1/2 block away, Ikeda's fruit stand and Awful Annie's Restaurant are 1/2 block away in the opposite direction. No jake brakes. That's good. Easy access to all the best restaurants and attractions in Nevada and Placer counties. It's recently remodeled. Comfortable. Clean. Safe. Great for doggies.
