Foothills Motel in Auburn absolutely lives up to the hype. I've been wanting to stay here ever since I discovered their Instagram account about two years ago, and I can confidently say, it did not disappoint in the slightest. The retro aesthetic is incredible. It has that perfect vintage roadside charm, but with a modern, fresh, recently renovated feel that is very well done. The rooms are big, warm, clean, and super comfortable. I loved everything about the design, from the spacious layout to the stylish finishes. The bathroom and shower are huge, the bed is incredibly comfy, and the large TV and private patio really made it feel like a boutique stay rather than a typical motel. The staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming, and the location is excellent. You're within walking distance of great food and drinks, including The Lounge at Foothill Bowl, which was such a fun spot. The 10 percent discount I got there thanks to staying at Foothills Motel was a really nice perk. There are also great nearby options for Japanese, Mexican, and Beach Hut Deli, so you're set for whatever you're craving. One of my favorite parts was the exterior. The property is beautifully designed, and at night it lights up in such a cool, classic way that it's worth taking a walk around just to admire it. We had such a wonderful time at Foothills Motel the weekend of August 16! We decided to go rafting in the area on a whim for my husband's birthday and stumbled upon this motel online a bit last minute- while we only spent 2 nights, it was a truly memorable experience. - Price/Value: The prices were extremely reasonable, especially for all that you get- no hidden resort fees even though there's a pool, fluffy pool towels you can pick up from the lobby, etc. There's ample parking within the hotel (only once was the spot right in front of our room not available, and even then there were plenty of nearby spaces). They even have Tesla chargers if needed. - Rooms: This was one of the instances where the pictures of the room were just as / if not nicer in person. Our room (a deluxe king) felt incredibly spacious, had a nice patio, and a beautiful bathroom (with great lighting and 10/10 shower pressure). The attention to detail was fantastic- retro-style appliances including an ice bucket, picnic bucket for the pool, mugs, glassware, keurig, a good sized fridge / freezer (much larger than a mini fridge and substantial freezer space was a huge perk given we were able to pick up and store groceries). Additionally, the rooms were fairly quiet given the location of the motel- I've stayed in much pricier/fancier spots that are much noisier with thinner walls. - Location: I don't think I realized just how close to the highway the motel was when we booked it- but even so, the motel felt cozy, safe, and tucked away despite its proximity. The area was close to all of the things we wanted to do/see (rafting, explore the city, dine, etc.), walking distance to quite a few tasty restaurants, along with a few steps from the bowling alley- I believe you also get 10% off at the bowling alley & restaurant. It's also right across the way from Ikeda's (best market for groceries, drinks, and the most amazing meat pies). The charming downtown is only about a 5-6 minute drive. Staff: Glen was simply wonderful. I called to see what time the office closed since we'd be arriving late- past 10 pm- and he assured us he'd be there until 11 and even if we arrived later we could buzz for the evening management who'd get us checked in. Sure enough, Glen was there when we arrived, could not have been nicer / more welcoming, and gave us some great recommendations. He started our trip off on the best foot possible and we were so appreciative. The housekeeping staff we met were also absolutely lovely. Overall, we had a spectacular time at Foothills Motel...so much so that we decided to book it for Labor Day (just 2 weeks later). We can't wait to return on Friday! read more

It was the best stay of our week-long journey. The motel has been refurbished in a real quality fashion. The details were noticeable. The bathroom sink shower and floors were first class. The toilet had a slow close lid. None of the higher end hotels had this touch. This was our only stay with wood floors (faux) rather than the nasty carpet most hotels use. The retro mini fridge and cooler was a nice touch. The bed was really comfortable. There is the noise from the road, but that goes away after about 9 pm. Overall we will stay here again, and look forward to it. read more

What a cute motel, didn't expect such a great experience at a "motel". Very friendly service, cute rooms well adorned with matching refrigerator and microwave, really nice hygiene supplies, a shower that two can join in with a nice shower head and great water pressure! Foothills Motel has earned its stars from me. This revamped retro-modern motel is an easy stop off of the I-80 in beautiful Auburn. So right away the motel nails it on location. The grounds and buildings are beautifully maintained. There are Adirondack chairs placed in groups around the property to socialize and enjoy the outdoors. Love it! The staff, Glen and Corey, were fantastic. I enjoyed meeting both of them. The only room available with 2 beds is a standard Queen-Queen room. Although I would've liked the opportunity to see what a deluxe room offered, the standard room fit our needs for a single night. The standard is small, but just big enough and with enough nooks (as well as luggage stand) to keep luggage out of the way. The bathroom was a very new and clean stand up shower. Great pressure and tons of hot water for my son and I. There is an adorable retro red mini fridge and Keurig. A large tv with a ton of cable channels is in room. The bed is the best part of the room. So comfortable and the pillows were great. Super glad that I we decided to stop in Auburn. I'll definitely come back to the Foothills Motel again when I'm up that way read more

Its a very cozy motel! My wife and I first stayed here last year when a snowstorm closed off I-80, and we enjoyed the cute retro style of the place. Even though the decoration and appliances are retro-styled, they're all new and well maintained! The room was clean, and the staff was super nice and helpful, and they even gave us pastries the next morning! My wife and I were looking for a comfortable, clean place to stay for a three day weekend of white water rafting on the American River. I found this 1950s motel online. After reading that it had recently gone through extensive renovations I thought we should check it out. Wow!!! What a unique treasure. The new owners spent money and time to bring a classic mid-century motor lodge built in 1957 into the 21st century. The remodel took everything down to the studs for a full renovation while maintaining the quaintness of a classic "Route 66" style motel. The property and room was clean, fresh and comfortable. All the fixtures, furnishings, art, and decor are all new with a retro theme. On top of a beautiful piece of American History, our stay included wonderful, attentive service. Glen welcomed us at the front desk and provided everything we needed. Finallly it's close proximity to American River and historic Auburn made for a perfect weekend get away. I never stay in Motels ! This adorable " Boutique Motel " is definitely different. It's clean, and it's remodeled, NEW RETRO VIBE ! Quality everything in the room including a TOTO Toilet. The room we had came with retro red mini fridge and microwave, Kurig Coffee maker. Lighted mirror in bathroom, nice roomy shower. Hard surface floors. Every room is single level which makes this PET FRIENDLY Motel easy. New landscaping is happening and even this vibe is chill. read more

They try to advertise new decor and all, but this place is not cleaned well. Is any hotel motel nowadays? But meet the damn bare minimum. I expect the bare minimum. It wasn't even met. Beds were half effort made. Not tucked in, kinda thrown and loose hanging. Restroom counters not wiped. The drawers (top mind you) had a lot of specs of particle board and dust and black specs of i don't know. ^ the poor cleaning is verified by multiple coworkers as we came for a work event. Simply awful. BED SHEETS WERE ITCHY (WHY? POSSIBLE UNCHANGED SHEETS? BED BUGS?) clearly the maid service is so badly paid or under employed this motel management can try all they want to have a nice new paint or whatever but it didn't even meet bare minimum clean. Also nothing was wiped down when we arrived except the restroom. I had to lysol wipe table tops, and clothes drawers myself. I really believe they skip bed sheet changes. I kept looking for bed bug signs, but I don't have bites. I kept feeling like sand or something under the sheets. Which is why I'm more inclined to think the maids don't change sheets in between customers. I was so paranoid it was bed bugs because I was so damn itchy only under the sheets. I also think our towels weren't all swapped for new. After getting back from town the hand towels were damp. I touched the body towels replacement and face ones and they were noticeable drier! My conclusion is they (bad management) doesn't have enough towels. I don't suspect the maid did this on purpose at all. Like no maid has ever not replaced towels properly. To clarify no I didn't use the hand towels and mistake the dampness. It's like already wet/damp. Both! No one in my party came back before me. Stay at your own risk. AC worked. Empty mini fridge and small microwave. Outdoor areas were clear of trash. The ice machine works. To be expected walls are paper thin. The included soaps are awful. Seriously being your own shampoo and conditioner and hand soap. Like. It's so cheap it doesn't lather at all. But that's to be expected at a budget hotel. The water gets hot fast. Good water pressure. Good toilets from Toto brand. Colorful place. read more

I was delightfully surprised to discover this centrally located, updated-retro, pet-friendly motel in Auburn. We booked a dual queen room that was clean, quiet, and comfortable, equipped with a fridge, coffee maker, shampoo, soap, and a large-screen TV. The check-in process was seamless, and the staff was very friendly. Conveniently, it's situated right across the street from an excellent breakfast place and a market/pie shop! Great experience! Excellent remodel on this hotel. Comfortable bed and pillows. I had a fridge and microwave in my room which I look for. If you need a hairdryer they have them in the office. Staff in the am and checkout were great. Heat pump to keep the room comfortable. There is a reason they have great reviews. Our several night stay at the Foothills Motel was a really great one. Ideally located and the retro style rooms were fun with red retro fridges, microwaves and Keurig coffee makers. We were there with a Triumph Traveller's group and it provided an ideal location for our several day drives into the Gold Country. The rooms were very clean and modern and the staff were wonderful. The motel is minimalist style. The kind you might encounter along Route 66 in days past. My room could use some wall hangings, but other than that, the stay was restful. The staff were all friendly and hospitable. The price was reasonable. And it is right across the street from the best breakfast and lunch restaurant on the planet, Awful Annies. We were recently there for a family reunion. We stayed in Room 117..the best room ever. Glen and Michael were always available for any issues we had. When we first arrived on Thursday afternoon, we could not get cold water from the bathroom faucet or shower, but Michael explained how the pipes ran through the attic and, therefore,heated up in the afternoons, plus many of the rooms were vacant at that time. By Friday morning, the water was cold or hot, depending on our need and continued to be throughout our visit. I also was not Keurig smart and did not know how to operate the coffee machine. Michael showed me how to do so and we were good to go. Thanks Michael. The room was clean, and quiet. The road noise was only heard if you went out on the balcony. The bowling alley was a plus. We did not want to come back over the pass at night after dinner with some friends so we booked here. This was a great place for us to stop and sleep. The have everything really well light up at night. I did not notice I had a black out roll down on the window at first and you do need it. Once, I found it, this was a game changer! It was very clean, recently remodeled and it was the recent reviews that made me give it a try. The beds were newer, clean and comfy just as advertised and reviews say. The fridge and coffee pot were appreciated. The bathroom was clean too with a bright white clean look and nice lighted mirror, we did not shower as we were on our way home. The room was on the smaller side so I would not do more than a night. When I booked online two weeks ago I accidentally forgot to change the date to the date I wanted and immediately called and talked to Mike who was able to change it since I booked through their site. The front desk was really friendly, and the whole place has been recently remodeled and looks really clean. It is not in the best area, but that's not really a knock on the motel. The price was good although the double queen room was pretty tiny. It would be a 5 star all things considered except the water pressure in the shower left a lot to be desired. I'm not sure if it's the new shower heads they have in there or another issue, but the shower was more of a trickle. Still recommended. read more

We enjoyed our stay. The motel certain plays up its retro vibe but I was also comfortable and well maintained. Lots of nice details. Room comes with microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker. Beds had a thick foam mattress and comfortable pillows. Ample dresser drawers for the two of us. Cute gooseneck bedside lights as well as regular lamps. Two regular outlets and two USB outlets on the nightstand. Bath room had a motion sensor light - nice that it will turn on and off by itself so you don't have to fumble for the switch but annoying when it comes on with full brightness in the middle of the night. read more

We came to Auburn for a wedding in the area this weekend and usually I'm reluctant to stay at a "Motel". I did some research and this motel has been renovated and had good reviews so we figured we are only needing one night let's give it a try. The front desk staff is beyond friendly, and the rooms are incredibly clean. It was a nice surprise to find a microwave, coffee maker along with a fridge! If you need a blow dryer, you can get one as you check in . Nice remodeled bathroom as well. I would definitely recommend this place and I would book it again if I need to be in this area. The walls are a little thin. I always wear earplugs at night regardless as I'm a light sleeper, so I didn't notice at all however my friend did.
