If I'm ever up near campus or in the Northeast area, this shop is delicious! They have both vegan and meat options. No matter what you choose the flavors and textures of each sandwich is incredible. It's self serve, lots of spots to eat/study/enjoy the sunshine. The dill fries are to die for, and the staff are always very kind and considerate. The sandwich I got was one of their specials, it was a turkey BLT, with avocado, pesto aioli, balsamic glaze, and a habanero jam. Was really looking forward to liking this place but it's somehow always a mad grease bomb - a pretty unfortunate way to describe a sandwich shop. Just now, I got the turkey, apple, and greens sandwich, which wasn't advertised as a hot sandwich, and I suppose I was expecting a standard, cold Turkey sando. But as a warm sandwich had a mountain of grease factors - the thick cheese being melted, oily pesto, and over dressed and wilted greens was super awful. The bread wasn't toasted enough to handle it and was completely filled with oil (to the point where you could actually squeeze it out meaning a spoonful of oil came with each bite.) Perhaps even the bread was griddled in oil but only enough to absorb it and not enough to toast? I don't know, it's inedibly gross. Last time I went, I got the broccoli breakfast sando and it was also dripping with oil. I thought maybe it was over oiled broccolini from grilling but the texture of the sandwich was the same as the one I got today - fully saturated in oil. First time trying some sandwiches this week and we really enjoyed them! Ordered the Italian and the vegetarian Italian, as well as the spicy grilled cheese (with gochujang and kimchi). All came with the house made chips that were lite and tasty. The Italian sandwiches were large. First time in a long time that I paid $14 for a sandwich and was impressed with how much we got. You almost don't miss the meat in the vegetarian, which has a meat substitute that had great meaty texture. The spicy grilled cheese was a real treat. Gooey cheese that strung as you pulled the halves apart. If you aren't a huge kimchi fan, don't let that stop you for ordering. Also swapped out chips for fries and man was I disappointed, especially after reading others reviews on them being so great. They had a sweetness to them, like if sugar was added, not a fan at all. This might be the best sandwich I've ever had- the roasted broccolini- and I'm not even vegan. How has no one else thought to put broccolini on a sandwich? Because whoever thought up this menu is an artist I say! Crazy flavorful and the bread is so fresh and just wee toasted. Homemade chips on the side? genius! Better Half is exceptional. I have never written a review for a sandwich place before. I have never been excited about a sandwich place before. Portland has many good sandwich places, but Better Half is in a league of their own. Everything we have tried is delicious (the Broccoli for Breakfast is the best tasting and most satisfying breakfast sandwich I have had in my entire life), the staff is welcoming, friendly, and helpful, the options are great (both non-vegan and vegan), the food has complex, balanced, nuanced flavors that I would not expect from a sandwich, and the portions are generous with at a pleasingly affordable price. Wow! We ordered takeout sandwiches today and I thought they were absolutely delicious! I ordered the turkey sandwich and normally would have them hold the lettuce but I wanted to have the full flavor experience. I'm so glad I did! What a lovely blend of flavors, and the bread was nice and soft yet crispy just enough on the inside to add the perfect texture and flavor. It was the perfect pairing for a nice, cool glass of white wine this afternoon. My husband had the blackened chicken, and thoroughly enjoyed the flavors as well. I had their vegan Italian sub which hit many high notes of flavor and texture, and I appreciate their preparation, and including napkins (!), and pickle and chips in the order. I've been to Better Half 3 times now and each time it's a HIT!!! The pork mojo sandwich is the right amount of tangy, spicy, savory, and sweet. Today I ordered the jackfruit mojo and the flavors are super similar, if not exactly the same, as the meat counterpart. It was my first time eating jackfruit as a meat substitute and I must say the texture is really similar to pulled pork. I'm a small person but I think the sandwich is filling and worth the price. Definitely kept the other half for lunch tomorrow! I also liked that the vegan sando was cheaper or equal in price to the meat counterpart -- I stray from eating vegan substitutes because it's often more expensive. The kale caesar salad is delicious. I am a huge fan of pickled onions, and their chickpeas are perfectly roasted to add a nice crunch to the salad. What I like about Better Half is that they are friendly to dietary restrictions. I like meat but am sensitive to dairy, so I like how substituting with vegan cheese without fully committing to veganism is super easy and simple here. The only thing is that service can be a bit slow and items are often sold out by the time I get there around 12-12:30. Tbh I'd rather have a restaurant sell out by the end of the day than be wasteful with their food. Ordering 1 sando is fine, but when I order multiple items online, it takes longer than expected. I wouldn't let that deter me from eating here because the flavors and filling portions make up for it! read more

Best vegan sandwiches anywhere in Portland... or anywhere. I have been looking for a great vegan sandwich place for a long time, and Better Half ended my search. Somewhat of a double-entendre Better half in addition to referring to the sandwich, also half of their menu is entirely vegan, almost every non-vegan item has a vegan counterpart. I've tried every single vegan sandwich they have and can say they are all amazingly satisfying with great portions (sometimes I save half for later). If I had to choose a favorite it would be the Vegan breakfast ham and egg. They use what looks like Just egg (vegan egg patties, which are delicious) and a tasty vegan ham. Visiting a friend in the area and tasked with finding us breakfast, a quick Yelp search introduced me to this sandwich shop that I've driven past for months and somehow never noticed. So happy to now have them on my radar. Sure, I've only tried two of their breakfast sandwiches, but they were great and definitely leave me inspired to return for their larger lunch menu. Using their website I ordered two sandwiches. Both on English muffins and with over-medium eggs, one had bacon and herbal aioli. The other had ham and spicy aioli. Both were pretty damn great! Packed with flavor, a really great texture to the muffin and the proteins, and a reasonable size for a breakfast. At only $7.50 each, I could see myself being a fat kid and ordering two, but one more than satisfied my appetite. Ordering and pickup were easy as can be, and the staff was super friendly. It looks like it would be cute inside, during normal times. Hopefully those normal times return soon and I'm able to dine in for lunch. read more

I'm not a frequent Yelper... but I just had this amazing sando and had to leave a review. It's unusual for me to blown away...by a sandwhich. I ordered via Uber Eats (I know, I know! I was stuck at the office and hungry). I ordered the Pork Mojo and thank you to a very quick Uber Eats driver, it was still warm when it arrived. Wow. Just wow. This huge serving was the perfect balance of salty, savory and crispness from the grilled bread. Well done, Better Half... well done! I can't wait to try the others on the menu. more often than not, when i get sandwiches or breakfast in portland, i find myself asking "how hard can this be?!" when presented with completely mediocre food...everywhere. i literally don't want a sandwich if it's not from here. it is consistently above and beyond excellent every single time. they understand something very fundamental about a good sandwich that most places seem to ignore: the bread has to be great or the whole thing is compromised. the bread is excellent, the spreads are delicious and clearly house made, the ratios of ingredients are CORRECT. every time. the proteins are cooked and seasoned properly- everything from the blackened chicken salad (which has no gross fatty bits) to the lemongrass tofu (i can see the ginger in the batter it's fried in) is thoughtful and well prepared. i only felt compelled to write this because sandwiches are easy if you have the right ingredients. somehow everywhere just blows it- except here. the vegan chocolate chip cookie is also absolutely mindblowing. one of the best cookies i have ever had. don't skip that. really. the homemade dill chips are good, but i don't care about them. read more
