I had to get a dish with tornado eggs, after watching so many videos of them online. I opted for the U.S. fried rice. It did not disappoint! The eggs were perfectly cooked with a slightly wet top and beautiful swirls. The tomato fried rice was superb--with the perfect amount of sweetness and tang. The accompanying meats were all good, especially the sausage. The fried chicken was kinda overkill, but made for nice leftovers. Beignets aren't really my thing, but they were perfectly cooked and the two creams were tasty. My friend's fried chicken sandwich was huge and the fries looked great. Service was very good. After my initial failure to secure beignets, I was on a mission to obtain them when I had errands to run in North Park. Street parking both free and paid was still extremely difficult to find during late weekday afternoon. Because of this, I ordered takeout and brought it home. Beignets - I didn't eat these until 1-2 hours later and they were easily the best beignets I've ever had outside of Louisiana. The dough is dense but airy and has a nice soft chewy texture with a slight crispy exterior. The black sesame and matcha creams were also so good and went well together. Overall not too sweet. I bet they would've even been better hot. Duck and waffle - this dish was okay for us. The waffle wasn't anything special. It was a dense waffle and not really fluffy. For the price I would expect more waffle or a bigger waffle. The duck was cooked well though. Side of fried chicken - this was solid and a good piece of chicken Hot black sesame latte - I was really surprised when I picked it up and it only fills half of the cup. Is this only 4-8oz? It's okay though because the black sesame fell to the bottom an was so thick that when I added more liquid and stirred, the drink was good. It had very strong lovely black sesame flavor. Went around 1030am on a Sunday and only waited about 30 minutes for a party of 2. Service itself was a bit slow as it was prime brunch hours, which was understandable. Food was good! Got the beignets, shakshuka and curry hamburg. Shakshuka and hamburg were great. Beignets themselves weren't anything special, but the matcha and black sesame dipping sauces they were served with were fire. I'd say they're worth trying since they're one of the popular items, but you aren't missing much if you skip out on them. I also got the black sesame latte, which I thought was really good. It wasn't too sweet and had very good black sesame flavor. Parking is pretty standard for North Park. They decorated for the holidays in December so gave a nice festive experience. It's downtown so of course parking is not easy, but I was able to find street parking around 10:30am after circling a couple times. I made a reservation about a week before for the weekend, and we were seated right away. Fried Maitake - 8/10 This was my favorite dish and would go back to eat this! Matcha Tiramisu - 7/10 I just had to try the matcha tiramisu. Normally I like just straight matcha but I had to try this fun sweet drink, and I enjoyed dipping the lady finger in the drink. For a sweet drink, this matcha was also not sweet!! Just the way I like it!! Shokupan Toast - 7/10 It's hard to find good shokupan toast outside of Japan, and Between Us actually used decent shokupan toast! You can tell by the sweet taste and the texture. Duck and waffle - 6/10 I ordered the duck and waffle because I normally love chicken and waffles so of course I have to try this. It was not for me because I did not like the sauce that they provided and would have preferred a regular sweet sauce like maple syrup for the waffle. The duck was a bit dry in my opinion. My friend was raving about Between Us (she said it was so good that she and her bf went back twice on the same trip to SD), so I immediately added it to my bookmarks and decided to check it out on our latest trip! Obviously, I also scoped out their Yelp and looked at a bunch of pics and the menu before I went. Looked good but didn't seem like anything too special. Well let me tell you - it was indeed soooo good and def something special. Probably the best meal that we had on our entire trip, and this is including all my local faves like tacos el gordo, lobster west, oscars, dunedin, etc.! First, the drinks - I got a salted maple cream matcha and the bf got a nitro cold brew. I don't remember if I tasted the cold brew, but the matcha was yummy! More comparable to what you would get at a matcha spot than a restaurant or brunch spot. The salted maple cream made it super creamy and slightly sweet (but not too sweet). The bf got the duck and waffle (which was highly recommended by my friend). It was a fun trust on chicken and waffles, and I really liked the passion fruit guava syrup! The standout for me was def the shakshuka. It was unlike any other shakshuka I've had. Now hear me out - the ingredients listed on the menu do look a bit odd (but intriguing imo). Fish of the day, boursin cheese, snap peas, runny egg, and focaccia in a spicy tomatoey sauce. I would have never expected these ingredients to go together so well, but gurllll they worked!! The pairing was amazing. When I had it, the fish of the day was some kind of white fish, which was smooth and tender. Something about the smooth fish, the heat of the tomato sauce, the creaminess of the cheese, and the sweet peas just created the perfect balance. And the focaccia - I'm not normally a huge focaccia person, it's usually just ok to me - this homemade focaccia was heavenly. Slightly crisp on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and the perfect vehicle for picking up all the yummy sauce. Super adorable brunch spot near Saigon Coffee! All their drinks were so cute and there's a lot of natural light. Staff was super friendly and food came out pretty quick even on peak weekend times! Parking can be difficult. It's worth coming with a reservation and plans to stop by other cafes or small stores in the area. The owners of the Thai eatery across the street at this North Park intersection on 30th St have opened a farm-to-table gastropub that has replaced a longtime local brewing company. Between Us made its debut earlier this summer, and judging by the long wait during my recent weekend visit, the buzz and interest in this place remain strong. I don't know if this happens frequently, but there was a flower kiosk set up on the corner in front of the structure. It obscured the hostess stand and didn't do anything except create congestion. I was fortunate that a space opened up at the bar fairly quickly after my name was added to the waitlist. The tap system from the previous business was retained so that a nice variety of brews was available. I ordered a Yuzu-Ade for a beverage. It was yuzu juice mixed with still or sparkling water. I chose the former with light ice. The drink tasted like a light lemonade. The food menu had typical brunch offerings but also some Asian-influenced items like the US Fried Rice. My pick was the Curry Hamburg which seemed to be popular based on how many times I saw waitstaff bring it out from the kitchen. A house-made beef patty was served with Japanese brown curry, tornado eggs, mushroom rice, and a dollop of whipped ricotta with chives on top. The curry was mildly spicy, but the entire dish was very hearty and satisfying. I could have used more rice to sop up the curry, however that's nitpicking. The service was okay as the bartender came by periodically to check how I was doing. I am not sure I would wait an hour in line for a seat as there are plenty of brunch spots in this neighborhood. Ordered the salted maple matcha latte for a drink- I would not recommend the matcha here, it was $9 for a really small glass with mostly ice and milk. I really enjoyed the food. It can be really difficult to be innovate with brunch since there are so many classics but I really liked how creative the food was. I got the mushroom chazuke (delicious!!) and latke eggs benedict which was quite good as well. Portions were on the smaller side for the price; I will let it go this time since the dishes were so good. Service was fantastic. The only downside is parking. For the curry hamburg, we were actually pleasantly surprised by the flavor of the curry! We were worried it would just taste like generic box curry but it was more flavorful than that. Between Us is probably my new favorite brunch spot! I would assume it gets busy during the weekends, but it was quiet during the week. The space was open and welcoming. I had read that it's owned by the same folks that run Thai Time across the street -- and you can taste a little bit of Thai influence! We started with a hot hojicha latte and ice hojicha latte with house strawberry syrup. Loved the hojicha latte, but we had to ask for the hot one to be made because it was barely lukewarm. The food overall was delicious, and the portions were very generous. I really enjoyed the "U.S" fried rice, which is a nostalgic Thai dish (which may have been created during war times, influenced by American ingredients). I used to order this dish all the time growing up in Bangkok, so it was so fun seeing it on the menu. And the tornado eggs were the perfect topping. The highlight of the meal was the beignets. I don't know if they're considered traditional beignets because they are reminiscent of Thai-style Chinese donuts (aka patongko). They were light and lovely with the black sesame and matcha creams. This spot kept popping up on my IG and it started to look like instagram-able dishes. I was worried that it would be all looks with no taste. Thankfully, I was proved wrong. What I love most is that if it details a specific flavor, you're going to taste it. Like the yuzu hollandaise or the sesame mascarpone, you get a lot of yuzu or black sesame. The flavor is there. Drinks: Matcha Tiramisu Latte - not too sweet which you know is the compliment. The cream helps lighten the bitterness from the matcha and it's a well balanced drink. Black Sesame Latte - this is not sweet. If you're not a fan of black sesame, you won't like this. We also added a shot of matcha which made it a little bit bitter. However, the drink was still tasty. I would probably skip this the next time. Food: We ordered three dishes & one starter to share family style between the three of us. It was the perfect amount of food. Beignets - if you like beignets, get these. Light fried dough with very flavorful side sauces. I would order this again. Shakshuka - my favorite dish. The flavors are different from your typical shakshuka in the best way. The fish today was delicious and I wanted to lick the sauce off the plate. Would order this again. Curry Hamburg - big bold flavors. Felt like we were back in Hawaii eating breakfast. I personally could have used less salt. I would order this dish to share. I think this would be a lot to eat for one person. Latke Egg Benedict - a well done Benedict with a really good latke base. The yuzu hollandaise was really fresh and bright. We ordered the beignets, curry hamburg, and mushroom chazuke. They tasted good but there were some aspects that could be improved. My husband noticed some of the rice in the mushroom chazuke didn't seem fully cooked while the hamburg patty was a little overdone and tough. I also ordered the matcha latte tiramisu with oat milk which wasn't too sweet but the cream did start to overpower the matcha flavor a little as I mixed it in. Service was pretty slow - it took almost an hour for us to get our food and the server had also spilled some of a drink over our table and also dropped a knife into someone in our party's lap. Honest mistake and it happens! But maybe there could be a bit more training in the overall quality of service. The interior is really nice and they decorated it for Christmas which was a really nice touch! It's a nice environment to sit in especially with a group. The matcha with strawberry was yummy and not too creamy or sweet. The sweet beignets were kind of skimpy on the powder sugar as you can see in the picture. The dipping sauces aren't strong on flavor so the sweetness of the powder sugar was missing for sure. The latke eggs Benedict was kind of a miss for us, prepare for a mix of smokey and sour/ acidic flavors if that sounds good to you. The service was fine. There was so much talk around this brunch spot, and I saw so many social media posts around it that I felt like I had to try Between Us out! - PARKING - Street parking only, and it can be pretty difficult to find a nearby spot if you're dining at peak brunch hours! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Looked like you could make reservations ahead of time, which I would definitely recommend if you're eating on the weekend. Otherwise you can wait in the walk-in line and put your name down, which is what we did. We went on a Sunday around 11:30am and waited about 30-40 minutes. The first half of the restaurant is fairly bright, but we got seated in the back area where it was very backlit depending on where you sat. Staff is pretty attentive, they kept checking in on us throughout our meal. - FOOD - Beignets ($12): Limited quantity so we ordered them immediately! This was one of my main reasons why I wanted to come to Between Us! The beignets were soft and pillow-y, and I loved the Matcha cream and Black Sesame Mascarpone! Would definitely get these again. Bacon Scone ($11): These were also limited, and only available on the weekends. You get 2 in each order, and although I did enjoy it, I don't feel the same urge to reorder like I do with the beignets. Duck & Waffle ($24): The duck was very well cooked - super crispy skin, juicy meat! The waffle was pretty standard, but I was looking forward to the passionfruit guava sauce - it ended up tasting not that great to me, so I ended up just using more of the beignet creams. - OVERALL - I liked the fusion of flavors here - some hit and some didn't, but I am still curious about a few other items on the menu that I would be willing to come back to try! read more

Came here for lunch on a weekend. It's a busy place during brunch/lunch so I recommend making a reservation or calling ahead to get on the waitlist. The parking is awful since it's street parking but this place was well worth the hassle lol. We ordered the matcha tiramisu and pumpkin spice hojicha for our drinks and both were really good! I could taste all the flavors and it wasn't too sweet. For food: Curry Hamburg: flavor was pretty good! It's a bit bold with the pepper flavor but it's great. I really enjoyed the tornado egg on it. Shakshuka:10/10 I would come back just for this dish. The serving size was decent and we ran out of focaccia and they were nice enough to give us some extra focaccia with no extra charge! Beignet: the beignets were really tasty as well. Very airy and soft on the inside. It went really well with the black sesame and matcha dip. The service was really great! It's nice, family owned and the decor is nice. Server was kind, a touch busy but she was cool. Food here is unique and slightly off. Portions are in charge but it's missing quality and authenticity. Our food was also a touch cold, barely room temperature. I got the latke Benedict. Again large but the latke had that specific flavor profile but was covered in maybe Costco quality salmon and a giant pile of lettuce which I removed. Loved the hollandaise though. Wife got avocado toast. Again smothered in lettuce. They really like to cover everything in produce to doll it up. Overall it's fine but it's not a destination spot. There are a lot of turn and burn restaurants in north park. Even Lucha Libra left. This spot maybe has 2-3 years then it may go missing. read more

My review is only about the café -- I haven't had a chance to try brunch yet. I love that you can walk right up to the front counter to order drinks to go. I got an iced matcha latte and was in heaven. They use really good, traditional, high‑quality matcha -- rich green color, smooth, and just genuinely delicious. Service was fast, and the staff was friendly. The whole space looks like an absolute dream brunch spot. Worth the try: beignets, mushroom chazuke Beignets ($11): deep fried pastry with with powdered sugar, black sesame mascarpone and matcha cream. Light, fluffy, and crisp perfection. Dare I say, better than Disneyland? These were an absolute treat and not too sweet. Definitely order them if they're available! Comes in 4 pieces. Mushroom Chazuke ($19): seasonal mushrooms (maitake, shiitake, king trumpet) with koshihikari (Japanese short-grained) rice, served with mushroom dashi, perilla seed, garlic chips, and chives. This dish blew me away--the textures and flavors blend together perfectly, and the crispiness of the garnishes still come through with the dashi. Tons of umami! Shakshuka ($24): Catch of the day fish (we had salmon) in tomato-chili sauce with Boursin cheese, fennel, egg, and broccolini, served with house-baked foccacia. This was probably the best shakshuka I've ever had. The tomato flavors balance well with the fish, nothing's too acidic or salty. And even though there's a lot going on, everything comes together harmoniously. I personally hardly reach for shakshuka but this dish kept me wanting more. SERVICE: Came for a weekday lunch, so there were only a few groups, but the servers were kind and attentive. ATMOSPHERE: Cute shop in the heart of North Park. Great spot during a sunny day. PARKING: Limited street parking available nearby. My friend and I were looking for a nearby lunch spot and decided to check out Between Us. I'm glad we did because everything we had was DELICIOUS. They are doing fusion right because every dish we had blended their flavors perfectly. Would definitely recommend trying this place out. Arrived around 10am on a Saturday and they were able to seat us quickly. Great service, the food came out fast and the inside has al lot of seating. The matcha latte was bitter and I'm glad I got it with the fruit purée. The latke Benedict was amazing and the duck and waffle was good. read more
