Unfortunately, the service is where this place falls short. The staff came across as unwelcoming and inconvenienced by customers simply placing an order for an already expensive coffee. During my visit, employees were openly discussing customers, using profanity, and creating an atmosphere that felt more dismissive than hospitable. In a market where coffee shops are everywhere, service is what sets a business apart. I'd rather get a mediocre cup of coffee from Starbucks on University and be greeted with genuine appreciation than pay premium prices and feel like an interruption. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, because the location and concept have potential. As it stands, the customer experience leaves a lot to be desired. Came here for a quick coffee while waiting for my car from the shop near by. As soon as I saw that they had an ube crème brûlée latte, I knew that was the one. It's all of my favorite things into one and it did not disappoint. It came complete with the torched sweetness at the top, so it was like a dessert and coffee into one. Caution for those that don't like sweet, it is on the sweet side. But for me, it was perfect and loved every sip so 11/10. They have ample seating outside, and their tall ceilings and floor to ceiling windows that open up to the outside gives it an open and airy vibe that makes the small space feel big. My one suggestion would be to have branded napkins, cups, or sleeves. With so many coffee shops, I think the effort in the small details like that would elevate the place... plus it's free marketing and branding. read more

The location is in the heart of Hillcrest off University Ave. This coffee shop is serene. It's nestled among apartment buildings & seems more for the locals then common folks. I love the pop-up window and patio area where you can enjoy the outdoors, you can bring your dog or pet along. The staff was helpful. There were two members working, one brewing and one answering questions and ringing up customers. The only thing that I wasn't too crazy about is that you need to put your own lids on your coffee? Some coffee like the one seen in the pictures does not need a lid. But for the ones that do require lids id rather they put the lids on. I wasted time figuring out what lid goes on my cup. Mostra is a staple in my neighborhood, and I walk my dog there often in the mornings. Even when the line is out the door, I'm always impressed -- it never takes more than five minutes to get my drink. They're super efficient without making you feel rushed. My go-to orders are the Ugga Dirty Chai and the Chagachino (if you know, you know -- earthy, rich, and not overly sweet). I've also had the breakfast chorizo burrito, which is solid and filling. Their pastry selection always looks amazing, even if I don't usually indulge. The staff is consistently warm, friendly, and attentive -- plus they always offer dog treats, which officially makes it my dog's favorite café too. I've also spent time at the Bankers Hill location, which has a different vibe -- quieter, but still bright and inviting. The indoor-outdoor setup at both locations is so cute, with open windows that bring in the breeze. It's a great spot to sit and enjoy your coffee when the weather's nice. During Pride weekend when they were out of a lot of menu items, I didn't get what I originally wanted, but the barista made a great recommendation that totally made up for it--honey, cinnamon latter pictured. I feel like I never noticed this place because the Hillcrest Farmers Market ran right by it or distracted me from it but since the market has shifted down the street, I noticed this spot on the corner and one Saturday mid morning, I stopped by. First thing that stood out was just how sparkling white it was. It's bright. Lots of good lighting. High ceilings. All which makes the place inviting and makes it look bigger than what it is. Theres a small patio where you can kick it and sip your coffee. I'd say it's good for about 20 ish people. As soon as you walk in, there's the counter to order. Which means you'll probably be waiting outside to get in. I want to say it's quick and easy to order but honestly it took me a long time to order because there were some interesting options. Eventually we landed on the crème brûlée and the campfire latte which has hints of dark chocolate, honey, and graham cracker. I was between that and the blueberry pancakes latte. We continued our journey to the farmers market but with the cozy outdoor patio where you can soak up the sun plus the free wifi, you could easily find yourself spending a hour there. If you're familiar with Hillcrest then you know parking is trash. They have an all gender bathroom and you'll have to ask for the code from the workers. I'm definitely coming back to try the seasonals they got and the chagaccino. Good spot to stop by before the farmers market! Oh and they sell some banana breads and coffee ground! read more

Came here with high expectations due to social media presence, other reviews, and the line being out the door but for me and my taste buds everything fell pretty flat. To start with the vibes/aesthetic. It was bright, clean, and modern. Parking was a bit tough and seating was limited. And service was okay. Nothing warm or helpful but polite. As for drinks we opted for the Crème Brûlée Latte which outside of being fun to photograph and the crème brûlée layer having some sweetness--the coffee was not good. :( Turron Latte - similar to my comments of the crème brûlée latte above. And actually had a bitter taste to it. Ube latte on special- at least the better one of the options we tried and still didn't really have much flavor. Was very disappointed to come and see half their drink menu unavailable and absolutely no pastries/snacks. We stood outside for a minute to review the menu and approached the counter. The 2 girls continued their conversation on the side. One made eye contact but did not come over or tell the girl talking to her that we were ready. After locking eyes for a second time the other girl was ushered to take our order. Like another review said, it felt like we were bothering them even though we were just trying to place an order. Their machine was also down and had a note to use the other card machine. The girl finished our orders and walked away. My husband had some issues using the other machine and after multiple attempts the other girl happened to walk by and do something in front of the register. She noticed we were having issues with the payment and reset it for our payment. She stayed until the payment was completed. The customer after us also had issues with the machine and actually walked to the handoff thinking it was complete. The following customer started ordering before she was called back to complete her payment. The vibe was great with an open air concept and some patio seats. However, the construction and run down neighboring buildings was very off putting. We got our drinks and the tea was fine. The coconut cold brew was horrible. Did not have a strong coconut scent, mostly vanilla. The brew was also off, a little on the lighter end and with a very sour/acidic taste. There were a plethora of coffee shops in the area. Monstra Coffee is a San Diego staple. Great coffee with a Filipino influence. Over the years this place has grown to multiple locations including inside Petco Park. I've been to the Carmel location and 4s Ranch. The Hillcrest location is nice with an open air bar seating. I came on a nice San Diego sunny day, which made me wish I could stay a while and enjoy the ambiance. I normally come for the Ube latte which is one of my favorite. Today I got the blue berry pancake latte which ended up being another solid choice. I would say just as good as the Ube latte. They've added a few more signature lattes since I last came. Monstra is as good of a coffee place you'll find in SD, let alone in any city that has exceptional coffee. There signature lattes give a reason to keep coming back. read more

My friend and I found Mostra Coffee in our search for a local cafe within walking distance of our Airbnb in Hillcrest. We arrived on a weekday morning, and the cafe felt sleek inside with an all white interior, yet it was also noticeably busy. Mostra has limited seating with only a small bar area available, so it feels like this location is intended for grab-and-go. My friend and I decided to dine-in to enjoy our coffees, and I ordered the ube creme brûlée latte and she ordered the Turon creme brûlée latte. I loved the Filipino flare, and the creme brûlée was torched on top which added a nice toastiness to the first few sips. Mostra has been recognized as one of America's Top 100 Small Businesses and 2020 Roaster of the Year, both of which are impressive and well deserved. We've been wanting to try this place for a while and we really wanted to like this place because it's always nice to support a local coffee shop. Unfortunately, our experience today was disappointing. The person at the register wasn't very welcoming. No greeting, no smile, just a pretty cold interaction that set the tone right away. It may have just been an off day, but it didn't feel very inviting. As for the drinks, we ordered a 16oz cinnamon honey latte and a 16oz iced chai latte. The cinnamon honey latte seemed to be missing the honey entirely, and the iced chai was very weak and watered down. For $12 total, we expected better quality and a little more care in both preparation and service. I understand everyone has off days, and I'm open to giving places another try. Love the design of their bar. It's a smaller coffee shop but it has a ton of seating. I wanted to buy a bag of beans to bring home for my dad to try, since the owners seem to be Filipino. My only gripe was that the airplanes were flying so close so it was so loud and it scared me the first time. Some things sound good in its original form, and are a bit odd in a repurposed fashion. I was a little bit skeptical of trying the turon latte because banana flavor in a coffee, does it belong? But I love, and miss the fried Filipino dessert, and thought why not try it! Well, I'm happy to report that Mostra has a delicious turon latte done right! It totally works! I saw Mostra trending on Instagram a few months ago and bookmarked one of their locations for my San Diego trip. Luckily, there's several Mostra locations throughout San Diego and the Hillcrest location was a short drive from our hotel, and we had already decided on brunch in Hillcrest anyways. I easily placed my order online for pick up while finishing brunch and was quoted 15 minutes. I ordered the turon latte (can only be hot) and got him a cookie butter latte iced regular sweet. When I got there, our drinks were nicely put in a two-cup holder in a paper bag; so thoughtful! The top was torched like how a crème brûlée dessert is, and well balanced between sweet and coffee, though at the bottom got really sweet due to all the syrup collecting. I did notice more banana flavor than jackfruit syrup though, but jackfruit is pretty mild to be honest. His cookie butter latte was like a light milkshake! It was ordered regular sweet but I think slightly sweeter would've been a little better to have the flavors come through a teeny bit more. Both drinks in regular size were just under $7. For the purist, they offer regular classic coffee drinks, teas, and caffeine-free drinks. Next time we're in SD, we'll definitely be hitting them back up for a tasty caffeine buzz. read more

I love Mostra coffee! This location is great to people watch and hang out before checking out the Sunday Hillcrest Farmers Market. It's right across the street from it all. The lighting was gorgeous in the early morning as the sun came through the windows. Compared to other shops, this one has tall ceilings so it doesn't make you feel enclosed. It's quite open and relaxing. There's seating outside-- some in direct sun and others in partial. There were several flies out n about, but when there's food~ when isn't there flies? Also, there were also termites flying. One landed on the table and the other landed near my bag! Just be aware (: try not to slurp any down. After checking out the menu and thinking about it more, I'm really confused where they get their pricing from for their iced specialty latte drinks. The pricing differs greatly and it's kind of odd. Like the iced blueberry pancake latte was $7.15 and the iced salted caramel latte was $6.95 ... and then they had another iced specialty latte which was $6.75? These prices are quite on the expensive side for specialty lattes and it was in a regular sized cup~! These drinks are def for if you want to splurge a bit. Love their coffee and the staff is very friendly! They have minimal seating inside but they have big windows they can open with a counter that's inside and out and then tables outside on their patio which is quite large. They won an award for roasting and their coffee is very good! The manager is very friendly and nice, and they always have a big bowl of dog biscuits by the register... I always take my dog to coffee in the morning. They are in the first level of the Evoc building on normal street and hopefully, after all the construction is done, their business will increase, but still seems like a steady flow of people. And they also have a bathroom, for public use, which is really a good thing when you're drinking coffee lol. read more
