Creme Brûlée Latte and House Cold Brew
    Jessica A.

Went here for breakfast but sadly they were out of pastries at this location. I tried the crème brûlée latte but with a non-dairy milk which is why I am assuming the brûlée sank pretty quickly. It was still tasty though. I got a cold brew for free because I bought beans and that was lovely. The patio was a nice place to sit as well. Since returning home I have been using the Mexico beans for free pour lattes and it is absolutely delicious.

Came here for a quick coffee while waiting for my car from the shop near by. As soon as I saw that they had an ube crème brûlée latte, I knew that was the one. It's all of my favorite things into one and it did not disappoint. It came complete with the torched sweetness at the top, so it was like a dessert and coffee into one. Caution for those that don't like sweet, it is on the sweet side. But for me, it was perfect and loved every sip so 11/10. They have ample seating outside, and their tall ceilings and floor to ceiling windows that open up to the outside gives it an open and airy vibe that makes the small space feel big. My one suggestion would be to have branded napkins, cups, or sleeves. With so many coffee shops, I think the effort in the small details like that would elevate the place... plus it's free marketing and branding.

I will go out of my way to get a blueberry matcha from Mostra coffee I really wish the cost was under $9 though but we can't always have everything in life. Service is always great! Honey lavender latte, yum!

Nice local coffee shop, plenty of seating indoors and out. Clean and airy. A beautiful hummingbird flew in while we were there, good luck? Maybe. I chose a iced honey lavender latte, perfect bakance and flavor. I would definitely return. Good customer service. They were out of alot of items early, so must be a popular spot. Off for a 5 mile hike, this definitely helped me keep up!

They we're out of a few items but coffee was good and the esthetic was nice. Parking was difficult due to the construction next door. The cashier was friendly but did not offer any recommendations or specials.

Located in the Hillcrest neighborhood, this was just a quick drop in to get a drink while in the area. They got the job done for us. Service was good, and the vibes were casual and pretty modern. The shop was on the smaller side, so seems more suited for a grab and go.

The location is in the heart of Hillcrest off University Ave. This coffee shop is serene. It's nestled among apartment buildings & seems more for the locals then common folks. I love the pop-up window and patio area where you can enjoy the outdoors, you can bring your dog or pet along. The staff was helpful. There were two members working, one brewing and one answering questions and ringing up customers. The only thing that I wasn't too crazy about is that you need to put your own lids on your coffee? Some coffee like the one seen in the pictures does not need a lid. But for the ones that do require lids id rather they put the lids on. I wasted time figuring out what lid goes on my cup. For the most part, the pastry and coffee were delicious and the ambience is nice on a great summer day.

Mostra is a staple in my neighborhood, and I walk my dog there often in the mornings. Even when the line is out the door, I'm always impressed -- it never takes more than five minutes to get my drink. They're super efficient without making you feel rushed. My go-to orders are the Ugga Dirty Chai and the Chagachino (if you know, you know -- earthy, rich, and not overly sweet). I've also had the breakfast chorizo burrito, which is solid and filling. Their pastry selection always looks amazing, even if I don't usually indulge. The staff is consistently warm, friendly, and attentive -- plus they always offer dog treats, which officially makes it my dog's favorite café too. I've also spent time at the Bankers Hill location, which has a different vibe -- quieter, but still bright and inviting. The indoor-outdoor setup at both locations is so cute, with open windows that bring in the breeze. It's a great spot to sit and enjoy your coffee when the weather's nice. During Pride weekend when they were out of a lot of menu items, I didn't get what I originally wanted, but the barista made a great recommendation that totally made up for it--honey, cinnamon latter pictured. This place nails it -- from quality drinks to good vibes to fast service. Whether it's your morning ritual or a new discovery, Mostra is always a good call.

    Coconut Bibingka Latte

Mostra Coffee is a hidden gem and a Filipino-inspired coffee roaster worth checking out. The Choconana and coconut bibingka latte are both must-tries, especially on a warm day. The Choconana has a subtle banana note at the end, while the coconut bibingka latte uses a dry coconut powder that gives a nice bibingka-like finish. Both are unique and very delicious.

I feel like I never noticed this place because the Hillcrest Farmers Market ran right by it or distracted me from it but since the market has shifted down the street, I noticed this spot on the corner and one Saturday mid morning, I stopped by. First thing that stood out was just how sparkling white it was. It's bright. Lots of good lighting. High ceilings. All which makes the place inviting and makes it look bigger than what it is. Theres a small patio where you can kick it and sip your coffee. I'd say it's good for about 20 ish people. As soon as you walk in, there's the counter to order. Which means you'll probably be waiting outside to get in. I want to say it's quick and easy to order but honestly it took me a long time to order because there were some interesting options. Eventually we landed on the crème brûlée and the campfire latte which has hints of dark chocolate, honey, and graham cracker. I was between that and the blueberry pancakes latte. We continued our journey to the farmers market but with the cozy outdoor patio where you can soak up the sun plus the free wifi, you could easily find yourself spending a hour there. If you're familiar with Hillcrest then you know parking is trash. They have an all gender bathroom and you'll have to ask for the code from the workers. I'm definitely coming back to try the seasonals they got and the chagaccino. Good spot to stop by before the farmers market! Oh and they sell some banana breads and coffee ground!

My go to Mostra location! The staff is always friendly, the space is clean, and the drinks and pastries are consistently delicious. Blueberry pancakes latte is a favorite, as well as ube creme brûlée latte!

    Lisa C.

Came here with high expectations due to social media presence, other reviews, and the line being out the door but for me and my taste buds everything fell pretty flat. To start with the vibes/aesthetic. It was bright, clean, and modern. Parking was a bit tough and seating was limited. And service was okay. Nothing warm or helpful but polite. As for drinks we opted for the Crème Brûlée Latte which outside of being fun to photograph and the crème brûlée layer having some sweetness--the coffee was not good. :( Turron Latte - similar to my comments of the crème brûlée latte above. And actually had a bitter taste to it. Ube latte on special- at least the better one of the options we tried and still didn't really have much flavor. Sadly it felt like a total waste of money and we will not return.

Monstra Coffee is a San Diego staple. Great coffee with a Filipino influence. Over the years this place has grown to multiple locations including inside Petco Park. I've been to the Carmel location and 4s Ranch. The Hillcrest location is nice with an open air bar seating. I came on a nice San Diego sunny day, which made me wish I could stay a while and enjoy the ambiance. I normally come for the Ube latte which is one of my favorite. Today I got the blue berry pancake latte which ended up being another solid choice. I would say just as good as the Ube latte. They've added a few more signature lattes since I last came. Monstra is as good of a coffee place you'll find in SD, let alone in any city that has exceptional coffee. There signature lattes give a reason to keep coming back.

And most of the ones I have tried does not compare to moms cooking. Because of mom's health she no longer cooks.... Husband was so kind listening to my food cravings and doing research, he found this place. First, this place is located in strip mall mostly made of food stops. Secondly and importantly, the parking is no joke! Come early and watch where you park. The parking is not plenty and the area is narrow, making it a challenge to see when pulling in or out of a parking space. When you get out of your car your sensory will be on overload on the aromas that seem to hook you by the nostrils! You walk in the restaurant and you will see the tables most likely all taken. How it works is you walk up to food counter and select what items you want. They offer different platter options. It was a lot going on up the food menu on the wall above the staff. Behind the counter it is well staffed so even though the line may be long it moves pretty quickly. Husband and I decided to go with a two item platter. My platter I choose half and half (rice and noodles) . My two items were chicken adobo and diniguan. We got an order of lumpia too. I found the chicken adobo to be pretty good! The chicken portion was pretty good. With chicken adobo there seems never to be enough of the sauce to saturate the rice. The diniguan to my surprise passed the test! It was tasty and had the right balance of flavors! I saved half to share with mom and she liked just as well. A plus for us is they serve seltzer (soda water)! They do have a self serve water station off to the side. The lumpia was good, but I probably would try one of the skewers next time. I forgot to mention that we had to ask to share a space at a table with another couple as there were no more open tables. They gladly shared. There are not outdoor seating. I would definitely visit this spot again.

Despite the restaurant not being as clean or well-maintained as one might expect, many customers, including myself, keep coming back because the food has traditionally been worth it. However, my last two visits have been disappointing. Since I now live more than an hour away, I don't get to visit often, so it's frustrating to make the drive only to find that some of the dishes I specifically came for--such as kalderetang kambing and sisig--were unavailable both times. What made the experience even more disappointing was the wait. The line was long, the weather was hot and sunny, and yet it barely seemed to move. It felt like the staff were in no hurry despite the number of customers waiting outside. I understand that food service can be busy and challenging, but the pace of service was frustratingly slow. The food is still good, and the portions remain generous, but between the limited availability of popular dishes and the lengthy wait times, my recent visits left me wondering whether the trip was worth it. I hope they can improve their inventory planning and speed of service because the restaurant definitely has the potential to provide a much better customer experience.

Crispy, light, and incredibly delicious. Every bite had great texture without feeling greasy. To finish, we got the Lobster Palabok. While I wouldn't have minded a little more lobster, the dish itself was incredibly flavorful and packed with rich, satisfying flavor. Definitely a memorable way to end the meal. They are rolled and fried fresh when you order them so I didn't mind the wait at all. He gave me a beeper and told me to wait 5 minutes. $15 dollars for 6 long lumpias. On the menu they are described as jumbo, but the are long not wide. I popped into the coffee shop because they had a feature baker pop-up. I sat down only a few minutes and the beeper buzzed. These pipping hot golden deliciousness was handed to me with the box opened for optimum crispness. They smelled so good but I had discipline to wait until I got home and not burn my mouth. The lumpia were sprinkled with Microgreens and showered in fried garlic which was a very nice touch to elevate the lumpia experience. They were served with the classic sweet chili sauce, a generous amount too. I only needed half and I dipped before every bite. It's for grabbing a mixed bag of dinner plates and side dishes and desserts, then heading home to your family, where everyone is hungry, that kind of hungry where you talk with your mouth full while you eat, but no one minds, because they're doing the same thing. It's for leftovers - awesome leftovers - that taste as good as they did the first day, maybe better, planned-for leftovers that help keep the kitchen clean and the family full and happy. It's for comfort food, though I can't imagine anyone eating a piled-high meal of pancit and adobo and pinakbet, then pushing back from the table and saying, "You know, I feel really... comfortable." R&B serves all these things, and more, for all of these reasons. And maybe it's not excellent, but it's damned good, and it does the job it's meant to do.
