This is a really fantastic bar - nothing to complain about and nothing too fancy, which would normally merit a review of the standard 3 stars from me, but there were a few things that really made this place exceptional: First, our sever was really attentive and had great recommendations for beer. She was very accommodating when I told her about my food allergies and dietary restrictions. Second, the food is fantastic! Way better than one would expect from a casual bar like this. I would 100% recommend the brussel sprouts and soft pretzels. There's a pretty good selection of beers on tap for all kinds of tastes (I'm a stout person myself and they had plenty of selection) and plenty of seating. Yelped this place and decide to try it. This is a beer garden more than a German restaurant. In fact, this is simply hybrized American-German joint. Yes they have little samplings of German cuisine but if you're looking for authentic, you may have to skip over this place. If you want to have a good drink, you could consider Bierkeller but as far as authentic German food, I'd have to say they may need to take out the German part and just consider something different. I am not even much of a beer person and I really like it here. The sandwiches and specials with their German flair are right up my husband and my alley. In March we had some fantastic rouladen and some spaetzle with roast beef and gravy. I am damn picky about rouladen so i can assure you they know German food. It was also a Wednesday so they had wheat pints for 3 bucks. As that is my preferred beer type this made me one happy camper. They also serve Flannel Mouth so that makes me even happier. We have sampled the sweaty pig (pulled pork with spicy slaw), hamembert (ham, Camembert, raspberry jam and arugula) and Bierkeller grilled cheese (with sausage, kraut and grilled onions) sandwiches. All have been delightful. I even had a lemon dill salmon in here that was tasty. The service has been good. The atmosphere is laid back. No glitches. A good place to eat with quality beers to match, even if you are not a beer lightweight like me. We will continue to return. read more

Tbh if I could give more than five stars I would here. We were here for hours and loved every minute. The service was wonderful. They checked on us regularly, even when they got busy. We never had to flag anyone down for anything. Our server had a trainee and other servers checked on us as they walked by. Our table was confused for another several times but it was amusing for us. Luckily for them we are the honest type that would let them know instead of taking free items. We were set on trying new things because German fare is not something we have a lot of back home. We tried several German beers each and even a couple local bourbons. We hail from Bourbon country so I can't say I was impressed by Michigan bourbon, but it was interesting. They charged us for a shot that the bartender said would be free because they ran out of the bourbon and couldn't give us the complete shot, but had I of noticed before we left it sure they would have fixed it. The food here was amazing! My guy is not a Brussels sprouts fan and he looked right at me after his first bite to say "damn, that's great". He is also still talking about the steak bites and how they melted in his mouth. Apparently Tuesday's are trivia night so we sat and had a good time guessing answers. This place is home. Beer list is always great and always changing. Food is phenomenal, everything I've had (Red Bird on the lunch menu, the pretzel sticks, the Hammy Sammy). Prices are super reasonable; this is not a dive, you're not going to find $1 buckets or anything, but you're not going to break your budget. More than anything, this place feels like home. The servers, the bartenders, the owners, even the patrons... You come in a stranger, you leave a friend. So warm, so welcoming. Live music on Friday, theme events and tap takeovers throughout the month, movie nights once a month... They love to keep it interesting. Lots of participation and lots of fun, not a cheap attempt to drum up business. If there's one place you need to check out downriver, it's Bierkeller. I cannot say enough good things. The fat man runeth! Go ahead and ask yourself what me (A 340lb. man) running has to do with a four star review of this german restaurant. Ok, so I'll tell you. I'm on a weight loss journey, as part of that journey I joined the Downriver Runners Club. That club meets at various locations on the first Wednesday of the month, that location this month just happened to be at Bierkeller in Taylor. We arrived around 6 p.m. and they sent out a staffer who took a few group photos of the assembled runners. Then the club was off to the races, with me pulling up the far, far rear (That's a tale for a different day though...) Upon our return to the restaurant the group descended on the place like murderous horde (Or so I assume, I wouldn't arrive back until much later.) Once I was there, the group was seated and had ordered their first round of drinks. I'm not a drinker so it wasn't a huge deal to be that far behind. I was there in time to order a Chicken and Waffle meal (Which actually came with some bacon and an egg as well.) The waffle, bacon and egg were all perfect. The breaded chicken was a bit over cooked and crunchy, but was great in the flavor department. The other runners all seemed to enjoy their meals and drinks as well, and we were all served in a relatively timely manner considering it was such a large group. Not everyone's meal arrived at the same time, but again, with a large group that is to be expected slightly. It wasn't too noisy inside, and they had the Tigers game on the TV. It was a bit dark for my taste, but then again so are most restaurants, it did add to the ambiance on the place. I found this little gem on yelp while we were out shopping. My husband was looking a little peeked so I started flipping through yelp for some suggestions. With promises of German beer and sausages we headed on over. My husband spent about a month in Germany and was thrilled to see his favorite beer on the menu. We started with a really nice soup. Potato and cucumber was the soup of the day and it was really good. I know it's sounds of but it was really nice. My husband got bratwurst sliders and they looked amazing. He was given a couple different topping choices and they all sounded good. I got a Caesar salad with chicken. It was okay. (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). The salad came dressed with a side of dressing. With the chicken and croutons piled on top I didn't noticed and dressed it twice. My salad was swimming in dressing. Outside of that the service was spot on and the locals seemed to be enjoying themselves. This is a cool place!!!! read more

OK. I really do like this joint, but I'm having trouble understanding why the quality of their food isn't up to expectations. I was here last August and ordered the Veal Schnitzel. You can go back to that review and see what I thought about that experience. Last night I opted for the Chicken Paprikash Bowl. I was underwhelmed. While the sauce was good, the dish was nothing more than a glob of spätzle that was just not good. If there was any chicken hiding in there it did a good job of staying hidden. I'm not a complainer so I ate half and brought the other half home to throw away. I admit I'm a foodie and my expectations may be higher than the average Joe, but I don't believe I'm that far off and I know for sure that they can and should do better. I haven't seen any evidence that the owner/manager reads these reviews, but they should, and they should take these reviews to heart and do whatever it takes to make their business better. I did enjoy the selection of brews, I ordered the lobster roll, way way to much Mayo, over took the lobster, they should watch a video on proper lobster rolls. The chips were beyond salty, ate 3 or 4, and pushed my plate away. I tried steak bites, they were tough, plated more like a fajita, onions, peppers, mushrooms. Love this breath of fresh air for our area. Hip, trendy and awesome selection of beer. We come here twice a week at least. Food is really good but I can tell it's starting to slip from when they first opened. Chicken and waffles are great as are the sauerkraut balls and pretzels. Gets crowded quickly at peak times so get there early but the community seating is awesome and meet some great people. Staff are normally ver patient and well educated in the drinks. Few suggestions, Rina needs to spend more time with the guests and less time on her cell phone. Get to know your customers and build your local businesses ess reputation. Taylor is a very small bar community and that goes a VeRY long way. Some of the food quality is starting to slip. Getting greasy and over cooked on some items especially fried items. They are al coming out almost burnt lately. Some of the Spaatzle has also been blah and mushy. Probably don't need to change it daily. Find a few really great ones and stick with what works. Need to manage the kitchen staff before you lose that awesome quality. Don't settle for less than excellent. You have an excellent venue here and if the owners keep it fresh with an occasional menu tweek, entertainment and beer events they will be most successful!!! This bar can compete with some of the best new places downtown. Checked this place out after hearing about its amazing selection of many craft beers, and imports; both bottled and on draught. My husband and I were fortunate enough to find a couple of seats at the bar on a fairly busy Saturday. Mark the owner, was very knowledgable about the beer menu and was very friendly and personable. What a super nice guy! He really made us feel welcome. We only tried one appetizer, the pretzel sticks with the awesome German mustard were really good. We are looking forward to going back and trying some more things off the food menu, and some more of the fabulous beer choices. Definitely a go-to place! read more

It pains me to only give three stars. I don't live in the area, but last spring while dealing with a personal crisis I frequented Bierkeller often. Nearly everyday for over a month I came in for lunch and ordered the same thing every time, brussel sprout salad, no tomatoes, chicken schnitzel style and two Manhattans. I will always have an affection for Bierkeller for that time. When I'm in the area and it's my turn to pick a location I pick Bierkeller. Before today the last time I was there was for lunch on 12/31 and it was as great as always. Today was not the same. I came in with two friends that have heard me carry on about this place for months. Jordan was our server. She was so abrupt when she took our order I was barely able to add chicken schnitzel style and never had the opportunity to say no tomato. My two friends and I waited 34 minutes for our food, a bowl of chili, a schnitzel plate and my salad. The people at the next table ordered at the same time, had their food, ate and had their bills before our food came. Once our food arrived I noticed my schnitzel and the schnitzel on my friend's plate was black on the outside. Not dark brown and crispy but black. A few bites in my friend noticed his chicken was pink. Initially we blamed it on the lighting but a few more bites in he encountered big red spots. My chicken also had a pink glow to it. My brussel sprouts weren't crispy like usual, but were soft and mushy. We were never given water refills or the opportunity to order cocktails. I left embarrassed that this placed I raved about for so long was such a disappointment. I really really hope this was a one time incident. read more

Alright - I can't say enough good things about this place. The beer selection is fantastic (especially for the area) and the food is great. Whenever I am there I can't help but order something regardless of if I need it or not - most likely not. It's also nice when a place actually uses the proper glassware for certain beers - not everything should go in a pint glass. There are a few negatives to the space but they are minimal - mostly. First, parking can get a bit tricky especially when it's busy. Next with the interior being all hard surfaces it gets loud quickly especially if you're dealing with those who are severely inebriated. Finally, and possibly the most important offense - for some reason the clientele love playing country music in this place. I mean really - it takes away my enjoyment of my beer when I have to listen to someone sing about their girl, dog, or truck leaving them. I want to love Bierkeller but honestly I can only give them two stars. I've been here three times now and its just.....not rising to the occasion. The Good: The Pretzles with cheese are yummt, the beer and alcohol selection is excellent. It has a German Beer Garden feel with big tables and woodsy atmosphere. The Spatzle is generally yummy. The Bad (which is outweighting the good right now): There are bright spots in the food but some MAJOR misses: friend got the Kellar Bowl and it was instant potatoes and canned corn and was cold, I had chicken and waffles and the fried egg on top was cooked beyond hard. By the time the waitress had gotten around to asking I had eaten enough of the rest to say no thanks to the new egg. In a previous visit my salmon was not cooked properly. Water glasses were dirty, service was slow for a dead Monday evening. So this place isn't awful but it isn't living up to the hype either. I'm very bummed, doubt I will be back. I would recommend passing on this place honestly, you'll find better for your money elsewhere. read more

Oh wow. Where do I start? The filth? Covered by the pics. The waitress, that seemed to be handling all tables and the bar by herself was doing her best. Going in I wanted this place to work. I tasted the first specialty drink and found it was rather bland in flavor. It was the Resting Peach Face. I found the flavor to be bland and somewhat cough medicine like in the aftertaste. The second effort for a drink was called a Fish Bowl. The drink was tasty, but impossible to drink. There was a large amount of what looked to be Runt candies in the bottom. This posed a slight issue. I had to play dodge the Runt candy to not have one surprise me by pelting the back of my throat (messy idea). Now we get to the apps. We ordered two apps, the homemade potato chips and some potato cakes. Those were good. I got the pork schnitzel with brussels sprouts and spetzle. I will say that the theme of my plate was HEAT. Way too much of it. The unflattened pork loin that had the appearance and texture of being frozen lacked in flavor while the flavor fell flat. The sprouts were cooked on the inside, but badly charred on the outside. They tried to mask it with the glaze, but a re-fire was obviously needed. The spetzle had an odd grayish color and seasoning that seemed unthought of and generic. Don't recommend. I know my business won't be missed. Sad read more

Look y'all, if you're a server or a bartender, having regulars is great. But if you ignore anyone who's not a regular, you're not gonna make it. Food is fine here. Portions were off and the menu is too small, but it was good. But service was horrendous. I was completely ignored in favor of a couple groups of regulars, and had to wait 20 minutes to get a check I asked for twice. Got kicked out of this bar on the day of this review cause i asked the bartender how to get a refund on the jukebox cause they the staff skipped my songs. No other songs were cued and the songs disappeared from the cue and never played and it happened four times ! The manager asked me to leave after asking the bar tender how to get a refund from the juke box and she told me not to come back. I have never been kicked out of an establishment ever! Because i treat people with respect and kindness! I didnt even have a chance to get drunk! i have to be the only sober person ever kicked out of a bar in taylor michigan in less then 20 minutes of being there and not even being the least bit intoxicated! I always conduct myself like i know im on camera 24/7 cause you are on camera 24/7 no matter where you are! The bartender and the manager were both likely drunk cause they were acting like a drunk and belligerent person. Im 320 pounds aint no way they can consider me drunk after one irish car bomb. First after they asked me to leave i tried to pay for my one irish car bomb and They wouldnt even let me pay for it.
