Literally the rudest experience ever! I rushed to get to the store before closing arriving right before 9pm, there was still one customer in the store, as I was rushing to the door some white lady "I guess the manager" started yelling at me and literally slammed the door in my face! I proceed to ask her through the window, if she could just help me do a quick return (and I had a receipt), because she saw me coming and the other customer just walked out. She got extremely angry and grabbed the metal pole and pulled down the metal gate slamming yet another loud bang of a gate this time in my face. Never have I ever had a door slammed in my face my entire life! I never expected it from a long time a local sporting goods store. It's really sad if she's the manager and the experience she brings to an establishment. She could have been nice about it, even if it was 9:01pm no one deserves to be treated that way. read more

2 Stars is because I've been coming here for years and they usually have what I need. the deals are usually good when they have them. But the last two times I have been here was just a bad experience. I went in to buy one thing so a quick visit. I found what I was looking for. Last visit, there were two employees at the front desk and there was no greeting no smile. Very minimal eye contact. I keep forgetting why I don't go here as often. Came in today with my husband looking for Nike shorts ! As we walked in we were immediately greeted by the cashier ! Went back to the women's wear and the manager came back and greeted us and then helped us find my size ! He went above and beyond helping us and answering my many questions and this isn't the first time he has been so helpful ! I personally love the great customer service I always receive from him ! Packed to the gills with sports apparel, gear, and camping accessories, the store is hard to maneuver in. Its only saving grace are the occassional sales. Other than that, it's been my experience that many of the employees here lack the interpersonal skills necessary to be in a customer service position--the inattentive, retail sales drones that don't seem to be going anywhere, anytime soon. No one should expect royal treatment from a bargain sporting goods store. But no one should feel unwelcome and ignored, either. read more

Horrible, horrible customer service. Maybe because it's Vallejo and this city is bankrupt, and the people hate their job, who knows. I purchased a heart monitor that was like $100 and think I may return it because no one even knew, was helpful or was product knowledgeable enough to work it. When is biking not a sport? WTF. I went shopping for a bicycle and figured I'd check it out here and you know what they had?? I'll tell you, They had one bike for a child up on the wall completely out of reach and one other bicycle (a sweet 3 speed black cruiser) wedged in between the wall (covered with merchandise) and a huge box. How lame is that? I asked the cashier if they had any bikes and she's like "yeah we do!" I said... where? she pointed to the boxes filled with the black bike... "Is that it???" she points to the one on the wall... I walked out so fast... that was completely unsatisfactory. All my childhood my father has taken me to Big 5 for all of our sports things so to go here now and be so dissappointed really is a downer. Why dedicate the back wall to tennis shoes and only have 2 bicycles? And trust that anyone in a wheelchair better roll right along to another store because there is no way you'll be able to maneuver through that place. It's more than a challenge. read more

I love their sales like when I recently purchased a total gym pull up bar for 20 bucks! The store has been there for as long as I've been living, and sadly, has not changed one bit. You walk in and immediately feel as though you are in a garage owned by a junk collector. They don't always have what you are looking for because it is a small store, but it is Vallejo and it's all they give us. Customer service is a hit and miss and there is definitely a loss of excitement in the employees eyes, but who is happy with their job now a days? It's sad to see that this once a hustling Navy town loose it's steam over the years. Boo to all the current and past city planners and council members and mayors for failing to do their jobs. The only thing the city developed in the last 10 years was the east side automall area, and the west side transit and ferry parking garage. I mean how do you expect people in Vallejo to buy new cars when the city don't bring in new businesses to employ it's own people creating an income for them to purchase the things we sell (basic economics?) I look at Fairfield, for example, and they are having exponential development. They got a remodeled westfield mall, a ton of restaurants, an IMAX theater, a gargantous 24 hour gym, Mercedes Benz, a sports authority, an active air force base, a business park, Hilton hotel, budweiser, jelly belly, chuck-e-cheese and scandia! We got a huge amount of unused land. We got mare island and the city isn't doing a single thing to it. Our waterfront is real corrupt looking with a lack of fine waterfront businesses. I mean you could fit an In&Out burger and BJ's restaurant right there to attract all of the tourist and commuters when they are hungry to spend money in Vallejo to help us regain our deficit. Why are we sleeping on such great potential? Getting back to my review of Big 5, if you need something real bad and cannot wait for online shipping or don't feel like driving to walmart (which we had at one point in Vallejo), then Big 5 should meet most of your very basic needs. Quality wise you will be better off driving to the new sports authority at the Fairfield mall. read more

I agree 100% with Marsha's description of this place... Maneuvering the premises is quite challenging and good luck trying to find somebody to help you out. In fact, a classic Dilbert scenario manifested itself while we were there. A solo cashier was swamped as some 10 of us crowded the register. Of course, we were patiently waiting in line, if getting slightly frustrated with the length it took to pay and check out. Finally as we were getting ready to close the transaction, the manager strolled in nonchalant, eating some gummy bears, and proceeded to "take charge" and call for an additional cashier. Of course, by then, there was nobody behind us. :) I'm giving them 4 stars nevertheless because I scored a sweet set of golf clubs for $199, regular price $399. I'm not sure what's wrong with them, if anything, but considering I've got a handicap of par + 100, I'm sure it won't make much difference. While this place isn't ideal, it's pretty much the only game in town if you want sports-related equipment. read more

True. I've found an occasional low-priced soccer, track or baseball cleat here, and been damn-well-pleased about it. But, the service? SUCKS. I figure like this... if you want to work in a retail environment where you need not know the products intimiately, then work at a grocery store. But, if you work at a SPORTING GOODS store, hence the name, "Big 5 SPORTING GOODS," then make it your business to know at least a little something about eveything. I keep going back, yes. I've deliberated that fact, but it is ONLY because I live in the neighboring town and I'd rather go directly to a sporting goods store for a quick purchase and wander aimlessly from store to store at the Solano Mall looking for cleats, or shin guards, or socks, or whatever thing I need that's not for me. Called today around 5:30pm today with 1 question. I was left on hold for 12 minutes. I hung and tried to call back. The line was busy for the next 15 minutes, you know, because I was still on hold on their end. I called back again to ask my 1 question, and advised I was left on hold previously. That didn't stop the guy from leaving me on hold for another 25 minutes. I called back a 3rd time and asked for a manager. To my surprise, someone took my call within a few minutes. The manager was prompt and kind, apologized for my long holds, asked how long ago I called and said he'd speak with his staff. So, if you call this store, just start with asking for a manager, or you'll be left in a bottomless black hole on hold. read more

I went there tonight to purchase a 500.00 shotgun and no one would help me. I waited 15 min being totally ignored. The manager and employee had to ask me to move out of their way twice but never asked me if I needed help. Its cramped in here! The 2 female employees at the registers kept talking as if their convo was more important than their job. I didn't mind it, until I overheard one of them talking smack about the costumer who just walked out. As I paid, the employee was still busy talking and didn't bother saying a word to me, not even a greet of hi or bye. 1 star. I purchased a wooden bat today (first time purchasing a bat) along with batting gloves and grip tape. I received a sales receipt and items purchased, thats it. I went to the batting cage and batted about 50 pitches and the bat broke. I came back to Big5 to exchange, return, or even warranty it. The manager Steve said there was nothing that could be done. Another manager hands me a paper (that should have been given to me at the point of sale from the associate) stating their wooden bat return policy. It also has warranty information on that paper. I tried to reason with the manager that I didn't receive this policy when purchasing it. Steve pretty much he told me I was S.O.L. (Sh*t outta Luck). I then asked to talk to someone higher than him. He gave me the 800 number for Big5. Me being a manager before I have experience in customer service. What I received today was just complete bull sh*t. I will admit that I was pissed off at how I was being treated and and one "F" word flew, just ONE! And the manager Steve kicked me out of the store. They did not try and help me solve my broken bat problem. I would not buy anything else from this location as I hope you wouldn't either. read more

I left Big five because the clerk was too busy "chewing out" another clerk to help me. when I tried to ask for help, she stuck her hand in my face palm toward my face and said "Just a sec!" in an annoyed tone. I left, drove across town to Target and got what I wanted. Their customer service has always been awful, but the other day was the last straw. I am never going back to this store. and I recommend driving across town or out of town to anyone who needs sporting goods. For those of you looking to purchase a gun.....this is for YOU..... I just got off the phone with Steve at Big 5 in Vallejo. Boy, Steve REALLY knows his stuff about the laws pertaining to purchasing/owning a firearm. He has it down to a science! He asks 4 questions. Depending on your answer to each of those questions will determine the outcome. Sorry to say I have to go through a process so that I may possibly be able to buy and own a firearm. But the best part was that Steve did not waste my time, and he knew all the things that needed to be done, answering every question I had directly and was very understandable. I give STEVE a 5 STAR RATING!! One thing is that you NEED TO BE HONEST IN ANSWERING HIS QUESTIONS. If you lie, the process will catch you.....maybe later rather than sooner but by then you may have even more trouble than if you had just told the truth in the beginning. Because even if the answers you receive aren't the ones you hoped for, there are steps you can take to possibly turn them around to be the answers you hoped for. Just call Steve. He'll definitely take care of you!! (Ever consider a pellet gun? Understaffed and uninformed staff. Broken and misplaced stuff everywhere. Piles of stock still in packing crates blocking aisles. Dark, under-lit.
