This place used to be good. It is slowly turning from an old fashioned hamburger place to a Mexican restaurant. This WAS the place to go to so one could reconnect, not anymore. I couldn't come up to Ashland and not stop by Big Al's for a club sandwich. I kept thinking about the one I had last year. This time, I think the wife was working and she was so sweet! Said she understood not having fries because this sandwich is BIG! This was also the first time in a long time that I forgot to tell them no toast on the bread. However, the bread was grilled with butter!!! OMGEEE! This was a game changer! Made the sandwich so much better!! So now I really have something to look forward to! Love coming here! read more

Cute little restaurant with a lot of history. Big Al used to own the place. Now a friendly man named Arturo owns it. Very tasty burgers and it's rare that I feel like I had too many fries . Great location, parking and super comfortable seating with a good crew of construction workers finishing up lunch - always a good sign. The pastrami sandwich was quite good with plentiful meat but the rye bread could use a little beefing up. The onion rings were excellent. My family has known the owners for years. Arturo is always friendly and greets everyone with enthusiasm. After growing up in Ashland and spending nearly 35 years there, I moved into a residential treatment facility in Grants Pass! We take group outings to Ashland every few months, and Big Al's is always our go to dining place. Arturo knows my order by heart, and the chicken strips were excellent. They use a different type of batter, almost a fish and chips batter, and give you three large pieces along with a hearty portion of fries. I believe my meal was 14.50, which isn't bad for three large pieces of chicken. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, and we'll definitely be back again. read more

It has been several years since I visited Big Al's; today it was much the same but a little run down--espcially needs new upholstery. The ortega chicken sandwich was excellent. A large slice of ,juicy (slight citrus flavor), tender grilled chicken breast was larger than the big hamburger bun. Also inside the bun was some guacamole, a slice of tomato, lettuce (lots of it) and the ortega chili. (I skipped the mayo.) There were also crisp, crinkle-cut french fries. It isn't trying to be the fanciest or freshest or most creative, but instead serves reasonably priced and well-loved comfort foods (burgers, burritos, BLT, shakes, etc.). Everything we have had was enjoyable insofar as meeting expectations without reaching further towards outstanding. It feels a bit like stepping back in time with the history seeping from the building's walls - fun atmosphere. Friendly and fast service. I've been unfortunately spending a lot of time in Ashland due to my sister being in the hospital. Big Al's is the closest restaurant from where she is. ALWAYS pick up the phone and call the restaurant before dropping in there because it doesn't matter if it's 6pm on Friday or Saturday, they could be closed. Food is good but you need to check your sandwich or burger to make sure the Hoagie is on a roll and not sliced white bread like I got one day with bacon missing from the Turkey/bacon hoagie sandwich. I go there less and less now and it's a bummer their hours are so unpredictable. read more

Stopped on a trip to Nevada and googled the best burger. This popped up, and it was just down the street from our hotel. The hubbo ordered the jalapeño burger and fries with a peanut butter milkshake. I ordered a children's cheeseburger and a peanut butter milk shake. I did steal some of his fries with yummy goop. My hubbo stated that it was the best, freshest Jalapeño burger he had ever had. My cheeseburger was huge for a small size. It was delish. The manager came to ask if we needed anything and if we enjoyed the food. Staff were kind, sweet, and very knowledgeable. The restaurant was very clean. Would I recommend this restaurant again? Let me start by saying that the banana shake was unbelievably delicious, best one I've ever had. The tots are great and the fry sauce is really tasty too. They lost a star because the patty in the burgers are the same size and quality as McDonalds. The burger is okay because there's lots of fresh ingredients around the meat, but the meat was disappointing. Also their bathroom is really dirty. But otherwise, it did its job as a rest stop lunch and I'll never forget the shake. read more

The food here is ok; it's your basic diner stuff, a lot of frozen and fried things but it's not bad, exactly, just kind of unremarkable, which is a tough sell in a town with a lot of great food. Where it fails is customer service, which can be pretty terrible depending on who is manning the counter, and pricing, which is kind of all over the place but generally way too high for the quality of the food. read more
