I'll admit I was skeptical about this place so if you're looking for some uppity Cajun spot please look elsewhere. As soon as we walked in the service we SUPURB! We were greeted and the owner gave us the history and instantly ran down the menu and made sure we knew that we could order what we wanted how we wanted it. I love a good po boy sandwich and that french baguette made me feel good all over. The crawfish was fried perfectly and overflowed the sandwich. The crawfish étouffée had huge pieces of crawfish and the rice was not over or undercooked which is often an issue at most places. The ambiance makes you feel like you're in the heart of New Orleans to a local bayou restaurant. I have no regrets and will definitely be back for the Big Easy party. read more

We were heading to UT to pick up some tickets for the football game when we seen the sign for po'boys going down 12th st. We didn't even think twice and just pulled over and parked to try some po' boy the way they should be made. Lol it's a little hole in the wall, so don't blink and miss it. The staff is always friendly. Our server was Dara and she was a sweet young lady full of smiles and extra info not on the menu. It was much appreciated because there are 3 different gumbos & I chose the seafood gumbo (crawfish, shrimp & white fish). Everything was so fresh & so delicious. The food was spicy for me but definitely tolerable & bursting with flavor. The po' boys were stuffed & delicious. The popcorn shrimp is my favorite & never thought I would like seafood gumbo but this place definitely changed my mind. I introduced my sister to this places well, so now she has another great spot to go to for seafood. I'm sure we'll be coming back over and over. This place is terrible. Seriously...terrible. It took me about an hour to get my food (crawfish poboy and hush puppies). Taking an hour for a sandwich and fried bread...smdh. They also took orders from other people who were in line behind me BEFORE me! The hush puppies were good. The crawfish poboy was NOT. I don't even think it was crawfish in the the poboy. Just a bunch of over-fried tiny, previously frozen shrimp. It also had no flavor and I had to douse it in hot sauce just to not feel dead inside while eating it. The bread was stale. Your teeth become more sore with every subsequent bite. There weren't even that many fake crawfish in the sandwich to justify the price. I paid $12 and waited an hour to eat something that would have been better prepared by Which Wich. While the hush puppies were good (6 for $3), they weren't THAT good. They're barely better than Terry's Seafood on Airport. The remoulade isn't remoulade. It's like what another reviewer posted: "heinz chili sauce and a packet of tarter." Honestly, everything I've ever had at Terry's Seafood on Airport has been better than this garbage. The staff is incompetent too. Took them like 15 minutes just to take the order and then another 10 minutes just to deliver the order to the actual cook. The place also smells like feet and ass. On my life. I have never in my life actually gotten onto Yelp to write a single bad review of a place. The idea of doing so has always made me feel guilty. This place is SO BAD that I had to. Big Easy has amazing cajun food that's affordable and indulgent, as it should be. We ordered shrimp poboys, hush puppies, and chicken & sausage gumbo which warmed my heart because it tasted just like my Mawmaw's. They are currently open for takeout behind the restaurant. I'm really confused with what happened here. We ordered the hamburger, grilled cheese, fried shrimp, and fried crawfish. We also asked for hush puppies but received none. We didn't get any remoulade or tarter sauce with our order. The shrimp was overdone and chewy. The crawfish tasted off. The burger reminded us of cafeteria food. Both the oyster Po-boy and the crawfish etouffee tasted great! However I have to mention that when I opened up the etouffee, the rice looked almost stew-like with no distinct grains (pictured). I haven't been to every Cajun place in town but this is far and away my favorite. Walking in the door is like walking through a portal straight to Louisiana. I ordered a 12" Po'boy (which seemed more like 16") that was half crawfish and half "Cajun fish" (I think it was catfish), to-go. When I got it home, my girlfriend said "You're not going to eat that whole thing... Joe... you better not eat that whole thing right now." This place is a total surprise. Best Louisiana food I have had in Austin. Better than the old Sambet's (by a lot.) Better than the chain Louisiana places. This is an African American establishment on the East Side. Appearances can be deceiving. The outside looks like a complete and total dive. From the outside you would expect a seedy neighborhood bar. Inside is a fine Louisiana establishment. The cook has a style all his own. He is not about flashy fancy-schmantzy moments on the center-of-the-plate protein. Things are not super-sweet or super-hot or super-sauced. The approach is savory. Things come out of the kitchen perfectly seasoned (not always the case with Southern places) and it is mild and suave with a nice rich taste. You think "This is sissy Louisiana. Where's the heat?" Leave the Cajun Chef Sauce alone. The heat is coming. The impact of the fire starts building subtly in your mouth. By the one third mark on your plate, you know you have been eating Louisiana spice. But every mouthful is suave and comforting. Jambalaya and red beans and rice --- are primary stars of the show here. I would give both blue ribbons for being outstanding examples of what they are. The tastes change as you go through the dish and there are many wonderful savory moments. The etouffe is milder and drier than that in other places - but is fine anyway. The bread pudding was the only item not to my liking. Their version is steeped in syrup rather than putting flavor in the bread. Steeped in syrup? Try soaked to the max in syrup. It was not unpleasant but not legendary. * The other headline story about this place is the ambiance. It is a black establishment and it is quite clear that a lot of their clientele does not want to eat there. There were three tables of people who ate in the place - me and two other parties. In contrast, the Uber drivers and food delivery yuppies were in and out of the establishment constantly. It was like all of the rich folk wanted to eat the food But no one actually wanted to be in the restaurant itself. In my opinion, that's a huge mistake. Big Easy is a nice place and I had a good time there. Even better - at 6:30, the staff turned off the program on one of the TV's and put on PBS so they could watch McNeil Lehrer. They put on subtitles, so they could read what the commentators were saying while they were working. How many restaurants do you know where the staff watches McNeil Lehrer every night? * Overall, this is a very classy place. And it is even classier when the news is on. read more

Big Easy Bar & Grill (BEBG) isn't really "new" to Austin. For those who enjoyed the Original New Orleans Po-Boy and Gumbo Shop (and it appears 65 Yelpers enjoyed it to the tune of 4.0 shining Yelp stars), don't worry. Your neighborhood Cajun restaurants has simply changed locations. The menu isn't necessarily extensive, but there are enough options to keep you entertained. We had fried white fish (not sure what type of white fish, but it was delicate and not as "fishy" tasting as catfish), fried shrimp, and amazing fried oysters that paired well with their tartare sauce. We had ladles of gumbo, crawfish etoufee, and a wonderfully smoky preparation of red beans, rice, and sausage. They had some blackened oysters covered in parmesan cheese on special so we decided to spontaneously grow second stomachs and eat some of that as well. Everything was solid, and the fried fish, fried oysters, and red beans, rice, and sausage were items I would certainly order on repeat. BEBG is also a music venue, but theirs musicians didn't show up on Sunday night. That said, it works just fine without the live music because the fine Cajun food stole the show. Service and customers are very friendly; I felt very much at home in the bayou right here in Austin, Texas. I'd recommend for those interested in good Cajun food outside of Louisiana. read more

I hate one starring a local joint but this place needs some serious help. Service started off ok but got short, clipped, and kinda nasty after I complained about a problem with my food. I ordered a pound of crawfish and they were way over cooked. One of the waitresses tried to argue with me about whether or not this was true. Right after I complained about mine this dude across the restaurant had the same issue. I saw a man come in trying to buy a po'boy walk back out after not being acknowledged by anyone at the bar for over five minutes. I'm all for family owned local places but if service is unfriendly and food is mediocre in this town you need to either fix the problems you have or recognize you're not gonna be around long. Let's get something strait. I'm not from the south. So my cajun experience only comes from California New Orleans festivals and concert events. Best damn red beans & rice and fried oysters I ever had, hands down! So flavorful. The order was a tad slow as my friend got his hush puppies and chicken wings well ahead of me. But it was hot and fresh so that is worth it imo. They even had a great blues band playing right in front of us. Did not expect that from a hole in the wall. But it is Austin, heh! What I think was the owner was super cool the day before. My license was left at the closed bar next door. He went and got for me and chased me down as I was leaving. Ordered Cajun Fish and Etoufee platter. Asked for the Etoufee on the side because I didn't want it getting my fried fish soggy on the trip to my hotel. They called up and said they could not accommodate me because having it as a side would give me way less Etoufee. I got fed up and said just bring it the way you serve it then. They brought it with just enough Etoufee over the fish to make it soggy, less than a couple tablespoons with a salad in the same container with wilted lettuce from the heat of the hot food in the container. Also, they didn't bring the dressing I ordered. You should order from here if you are developmentally disabled, because you'll be on the same mental playing field as the people who work there. read more

Not too heavy on the grease also, something that seems to be hard to find when it comes to fried seafood. I ordered the 1/3 fish, 1/3 shrimp, and 1/3 oyster (probably why it took a while).
