Really like the space. The service was very nice and the food was really good. We ordered a pretzel for the table which was good, it could have been bigger a they could have given a bigger portion of the beer cheese dip but still tasted solid. Our waiter recommended the bao buns and the Reuben which we ordered and we enjoyed bot. I thought the Reuben could have been hotter and more fresh, but all in all I'd order it again. I have been to Big Grove before, just not the one here. About a year ago, I went to the location in Des Moines and I had a great time, so I was a bit excited to see a location in Kansas City metro pop up. But after my visit, I did a memory check on why I thought my time in Iowa was so great and why my visit to the one here was so disappointing. Big Grove does really well on vibes and are hoping that you overlook the mediocre food, average beer and bad service. When I went to the location in Iowa, I was with three other friends and my company helped me overlook any shortcomings that might have happened. But here, I was on my own, sitting at a 3/4 full bar with 5 bar servers, I could sit and check out how good their service/food was. First the service. It was not good, it was actually bad. I got to my seat and waited five minutes. Three bartenders continue to pass by our group of patrons without stopping to help, I didn't know what was going on, but when the person on my left had finished his beer, a bartender immediately went to him and then to the person to my right (who didn't need service) and just ignored me. When I stopped one of them, they actually lied to me, saying that he didn't see me. I had to stop a server for everything, I stopped another bar server for a menu, for utensils they forgot to give me, for condiments they forgot to provide. There was never a time that a server actually asked me if I needed anything until I needed my bill. This is with 5 different people serving about 20-25 people at the bar. The food was not much better. My first order was not fulfilled because they ran out. My second choice was a Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich. It must have been good, as it was highlighted in bright yellow. Firstly, the food was overpriced, I've had chicken sandwiches across a dozen bars all over KC and it was definitely on the expensive side at around $19. I can forgive the price if the food is good, but it wasn't. The chicken was not crispy, which is the hallmark of a nashville style sandwich, it was both soggy and wasn't spicy at all but totally bland. It was one of the worst fried chicken sandwiches I've ever had outside of a fast food joint. What is nearly as bad is that the food looks like it was not homemade, but from a company like Sysco, which makes it more of a ripoff. The beer was okay, but when I go to a brewhouse where they brew their own beer, my expectation is that they taste better and/or different than the local or mass market beer brand. The beer I got (Silo, an Amber Ale) was not as good as a local AA, like a Boulevard Amber Ale or a Free State Ad Astra. I admit the vibes of Big Grove was definitely hip, full of people who don't care about prices, food quality or beer taste. They want to socialize, be seen or just get out of the house. For that audience, Big Grove is a decent place to hang and it was 80% full at 7 pm on a Thursday. For those who care about quality of product and prices, it was a letdown. The price of my meal and a beer, after taxes and tip (and there is a 3% credit card fee as well) was $33. read more

Great atmosphere inside away from the kids/families if you're an adult that wants time away from the children! Lunch special is good. I ordered the turkey club with "southern coleslaw," and it didn't have bacon on it as listed on the menu. I'm not sure what southern means with the coleslaw, because it tastes like Kansas slaw to me but not cold enough! The slaw was warmer than the meat on my sandwich, which lowkey freaks me out. I liked my visit and the service was fantastic! The small menu is nice in my opinion as I get overwhelmed by too many choices. Can't wait to return. read more

In my opinion, this place lives up to the hype! Arriving around 5 pm on a weeknight was safe for sitting on the patio, but by 6 it had filled up. Parking will be your biggest challenge. Our waitress did an amazing job with recommending things and bringing food out quickly. We ordered extra crispy cauliflower wings with hot honey and the rosemary focaccia. Both were fantastic! I also had a cucumber cooler mocktail. It was nice to have so many options on the menu. I'll definitely be back! read more

The food was good here! The service was great and the outdoor area was amazing. Especially for families! My wife and I came for lunch after yoga. The restaurant itself is great it was a bit pricey for us! My hamburger was plain yet delicious! I thought that a two patty would be too big for me so I got mine with 1 patty. I sat on this review for a bit now trying to figure out how to write it. And finally decided if I don't let them know what is broken they can't fix it!! *I gave two stars because I understand they recently opened and I like their beer. Otherwise it probably would have been less!! I went here at 8pm on a Sunday, my first impression walking up is they had a big outdoor area that opens up to the bar, However they also set themselves up for failure here. With having a wide open patio that opens up to the inside there were tons of people bypassing the host/hostess stand and just walking in from the outside. There is not control of entry. As I walked in the front doors the bar area to the right is very large as well as the actual seating area. about 20 feet in you get to the stand. I was told at that time that they were not taking anymore walk ins the rest of the night!! I even joked do you have an app that I can reserve a spot. Which I was told they don't. Somewhat disappointed I headed out to the parking lot. When I got there I wondered what time they closed. So I walked back in the 2 mins between they were seating people. (I was told they closed at 11PM) After turning myself and several others away. I ended up finding a place at the bar and sat down. The bar was packed with workers 6-7 people working the bar. Shortly after seating a bartender came over took the check left by the previous people and wiped down the area. I watched 3 other groups get taken care of after I sat down, an older couple sat down about 5 mins in, next to me and got taken care of right away. She had to flag someone down for me to get a beer and food order. They were also out of two of their most popular beers, again recently opened so.... Food wasn't a bad wait since the place was busy and new. I ordered the burger and fries. Since the couple next to me had it a few days prior and said it was good. It is a bit pricey even for bar food, it looked good and was a good size double patty when it was delivered. I got about 1/2 way through the burger and found that the top patty was cooked fully the bottom was still bright pink. And no I was never asked how I wanted my burger cooked. I did point it out but the bar staff just went on about their work. I had super high expectations for this place since I had heard how good the food was going to be and all of this to get service like this is horrible, McDonalds would have been better!! I will come back at some point with some friends and hope that it is a way better experience!! read more

Loved this place!! Prairie village desperately needed something like this. Great vibe & only waited 30 min for a patio table which is not bad at all considering they just opened, super busy, Friday Juneteenth where lots of people have off, and right before a USA world cup game, Great space, good drinks, and food was amazing!! I appreciate a brewery that actually has good food & cocktail options since I'm not a huge beer gal. Green chile queso fries were delicious 11/10. The inside is huge and has such fun vibes. As an Iowan, this is a dream come true to have one of my favorite Iowa City (and Des Moines) spots so close. Couldn't recommend it any more! read more

I went on opening night and it was super packed, as expected! The service was exceptional and the food was delicious. They had a great beer and cocktail selection as well. I ordered a margarita and it was great, but when my second came it was extremely sour and tart. I did ask a server about it and he explained it's been an issue with others as well and offered to bring me something else instead. I appreciated that and fully expected there to be a few kinks to work out within the first few weeks of being open. The kids play area and patio is really nice for families. Stopped in by the recommendation of a friend. It was very busy which I love to see in a new restaurant. My first thought upon entering was YOWSA this place is huge! I was happy not to sit outside because of the large amount of children playing in the outdoor space, but as it was a lovely day, I would have preferred to sit there. The indoor space is very nice, well decorated and clean,. It was busy, as I said, but our server was incredibly overwhelmed. Maybe they were understaffed, but we honestly felt sorry for him. The food was really good. The beer was pretty good. It was quite frankly not a relaxing environment, as it was loud, crowded, and filled with kids. Hopefully when things calm down as the initial "new" wears off we will be back for a nice relaxing time. For now, we will let the newness wear off. read more

Hmm, where to start. We came here during the world cup, so maybe it's not always a disaster. But after noticing all the signs indicating we were supposed to see the host to be seated, we did that. It was a long wait to sit and took an hour from when we arrived until we got the flights we ordered. The flights were not even on the menu. Our waitress was nice and apologetic and everything. Other people were going straight to the bar and maybe that was what we should have done, but it wasn't really clear and the hostess told us to get a table even if we were just getting beer. We also got chips and salsa and that also took forever to come out, the chips were okay and the salsa had olive oil poured on it? We both liked the "Lupo" beer best, some others were okay, some were not great. I also noticed a couple of things that I thought were a little funny in terms of cleanliness practices that I won't go into in case they were one offs. This is NOT a daycare. Nor is it a playground. And yet, there were children everywhere! They inundate the outside eating area and bar games - just try not to step on them, or get run into by them. They run through the restaurant, barefooted, to the restroom. I get family-friendly (we have 4 kids aged teens and up), but from what we saw, there is little to no parenting happening here. If you want to avoid the rambunctious children, you have to hide at the back of the restaurant, where you can see tv screens, but you're seated where it's dark. The food was fine. The beer was fine. The service was outstanding in our (90% adults) section. We certainly won't go back until they put some kind of restraint on the lack of parenting. Every single adult I have spoken with (from 21-57 yrs) says they won't go back - simply due to the kids having free rein at all times of day and night. My advice - find a less crazy patio to drink a beer. MAYBE management will change something and make it kid-friendly until 8pm or something. It's certainly not conducive to a nice night out for anyone but the adults with small (mostly toddlers and grade school) children. And it's dangerous to have kids literally running around by themselves in a brewery/sports bar. Not cool. read more

We were super impressed with their outdoor area complete with green space, yard games, and tons of seating; our toddler had a blast! Overpriced and very mediocre food. Not a single person in our party said anything positive about the food we received. The sweet potato fries probably saved us from calling the manager over. Service was slow though it was a Saturday. I have never felt like I needed to make a review on this app, so that should tell you something.
