We stopped by for a quick bite to try their steamed rice rolls. We ordered the beef rice roll, egg rice roll, fried mushrooms with garlic, and the dry chili lo wontons. The rice rolls had a great texture, silky and soft. I preferred the beef over the egg. The fried mushrooms were tasty, though the menu photo showed oyster mushrooms, and what we received were regular white mushrooms. The wontons were good, but I preferred the beef rice rolls more. I also liked that dining in comes with a complimentary glass of warm soy milk, which was a nice touch and not overly sweet.

It's really cool to have specialty Chinese food like this. I've had steamed rice rolls before, but as only a single item on a long dim sum menu. Having an entire menu of them was quite the experience. We got both corn and shrimp rolls, as well as some fried things. Next time we visit we'll try the congee, which looked good. The soy milk was also tasty. I do wish they had tea, though. The decor is also delightfully 60s.

I liked this place!! Unassuming, your typical mom and pop shop, Steam Rice Roll King serves cozy cantonese eats that are authentic and homemade. Service is friendly and after you are seated you are greeted with a fresh cup of housemade warm soymilk. Not too sweet - perfect for the Asian palate. We got the shrimp rice roll and the beef rice roll. The rolls were not heavily seasoned and were light in flavor. The texture was chewy, fresh, and had a "QQ" texture. Definitely a step up from dim sum places! While I didn't try their other offerings, they look worthy of a return visit!

This place is very good! Food came out quick. The rice rolls were so soft and tasty. I only wish that the roll was hotter. When it came out, it was luke warm. The beef brisket noodle soup was very flavorful and the meat was tender. They were unfortuntely out of the soy milk so I could not try that but I hope to come back!

Having been away from the Cantonese scene in Portland for a few decades got me worried, but with restaurants like Steam Rice Roll King, I am not as concerned that Portland Chinese restaurants will lose the unique Cantonese flavor. This place specializes in Cheurng Fun, or the "rice roll" often eat at dim sum restaurants. You'll find some great HK style comfort dishes too like Xiduoshi (french toast with condensed milk), very smooth juk, and others. You'll want to try the different Cheurng Fn variations, including the shrimp, cha-siu, and beef versions. Servers are very polite, and the eating space is maintained well. Highly recommended for some good Cantonese style comfort food eats.

We ordered; Golden Beef Rice Noodle Salted Bone Congee Salt & Pepper Chicken Tips Shrimp Rice Roll Beef Rice Roll Fried Chinese Donut Wait - It was just the two of us. 40 minute wait. Restaurant was full at 1:00 pm. Be prepared to wait a long time! Service - One gal working. I'm sure she was overwhelmed, but didn't show it. I wanted to help her clear tables. We waited about 20 minutes for the first few dishes. Food -The Golden Beef Rice Noodles had a robust, flavorful broth. Recommended. Salted Bone Congress's was too salty. I would not order again. Chicken Tips are just that - if you like bone and skin. It was ok, but not ordering next time Rice Rolls - Nice "que que" texture. It was good. Recommended. Chinese Donut - Typical greasy fried dough. Rancid tasting. Oil needs to be changed. Overall, I would return and will go right when they open.

Ordered take out from here and also got some homemade soy milk, which I forgot to take a picture of. It was delicious and I hear it's free if you eat in store so I'd def like to do that sometime. The steamed rolls are quite good, just a little bland, I would have liked two containers of the sauce for extra flavor. The fried mushrooms were okay, probably wouldn't get those again. The golden beef rice noodle soup surprised me with how good it was! The broth had a lot of flavor and was delicious. Congee was pretty good, the shrimp steamed rice noodles were also a little bland. I added some chili oil to help. Wontons were decent but not amazing. Overall I'd say it was pretty good food and I would still want to try more of the menu, maybe more of the steamed rolls and with extra sauce.

Pros: they make really good steam rice rolls, I mean, better than what I had in Seattle, Vancouver BC, Taiwan, and maybe HK! Rice noodles is also decent. Fast service. Friendly staff/owners. Cons: typical Chinese restaurant hygiene (good enough not to get sick but you just know there is room for improvement), wontons are so so.

The rice rolls are the best (maybe only) in Portland. I was impressed by how thin they were and the flavor was solid. I would come back for the rice rolls!

We arrived on a weekday for brunch and were seated right away. They gave us warm soy milk. It was sweet, warm, and nutty! I ordered the Si Chuan Spicy Sauce Lo Mein, Beef Rice Noodle Roll, and Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll. Fyi: the lo mein had pork! It wasn't what I was expecting but it was overall ok. Not too spicy. As for the rice rolls, they were good!

I was taken here by my friend as she had been raving about the steamed rolls for quite a while, and that got me excited about trying Steam Rice Roll King as well! When we arrived at noon on a Saturday, we found ourselves waiting in line since seating was very limited. When we finally got seated, we ordered a bunch of rice rolls and the staff quickly brought us complimentary hot soy milk which was a nice treat. All the steam rolls were very tender as they were made to order. The texture of the homemade rice rolls was smooth and tender, which is hard to come by in the US. While the rice roll texture was great, the favor was a bit lacking. We ordered several rolls and they seem to taste mostly the same somehow. Also I wish the dining area would be more pleasant. The entire time we felt very restrictive as tables were close to each others, and the waiting customers cramped in the entrance area. Overall, we did enjoy the food and might order take out next time we crave some freshly made rice rolls!

First thing's first, the rice roll texture is really delicious and fresh here. Unfortunately it lacked a bit of flavor and needed a lot more soy sauce imo. The shrimp was a little tough and overcooked. Im curious to come back here and try a different meat filling. The bbq noodle soup was decent. The broth wasn't too heavy and the bbq pork was salty enough to balance out the light broth. For $13 it's a great deal for a meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant is bustling. The servers are busy but they attend to you pretty quickly. Really awesome service considering the crowds they pull here!

Found the Rice rolls on this side of the PNW! Plus a variety of complementary dishes on the menu! They're experts on the rice rolls - we had the beef and the pork and it was perfect - the meat was blended so well into the rice rolls and the sauce that went over was a perfect combination. We also tried the lo mien noodles and the brisket sauce was a plus. cooler days called for us to add the won ton noodle soup and it hits the spot - the broth was tastefully made! Don't forget to try the Chinese donut plus the congee - it's the perfect pairing! Quick service and beautiful decorations - make you smile the whole time! A good sized parking lot although - definitely support a local business here!

Ask the Community - Steam Rice Roll King

Are the rice rolls gluten free? (A previous answer says the rice noodles are not gluten free because they contain rice flour, so I would like to clarify that rice, even glutinous rice, is naturally gluten free.)

Yes, all rice is gluten free and steamed rice roll are gluten free. However, you should look over the menu to check if they serve other non gluten free items to avoid cross contact if it's a serious allergy. Also most sauces contain some kind of… Read more

The fried rice's flavor was pretty muted..I prefer a little saltiness in my fried rice and it honestly had barely any salt? It tasted like plain rice with a little soy sauce and maybe oil flavor? Just not very aromantic in general.. I disliked the Mandarin Crispy Chicken the most as I had an issue with the breading. It was very thick and each bite felt more breading than chicken..The flavor of the sauce was good but with how thick the breading was, the inside of the chicken had no flavor at all once I bit in.. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items, but I don't think I'll be back to try any others at least for now. The service was good and the staff was attentive during our visit. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: Hand-Ripped Youpoo Noodle: The absolute star of the meal. The wide, hand-ripped noodles had the perfect chewy texture you look for. They were tossed in a deeply savory, slightly spicy chili oil sauce and topped with a generous amount of perfectly seasoned minced beef and fresh bok choy. It was incredibly satisfying and a must-order. Popcorn Chicken: This was a bit of a letdown. While it looked golden brown and came with a sweet chili dipping sauce, it was not special at all and lacked any unique flavor or punch compared to the other dishes. Spicy Chili Oil Wontons: These were packed with flavor! The wonton wrappers were delicate, and the filling was juicy. They were swimming in a robust, aromatic chili oil that had a nice kick and a touch of vinegar sharpness. Why 4 stars instead of 5? While the noodles and wontons were excellent and the service was good, the atmosphere was a bit uncomfortable. The restaurant was completely empty when we went, but it was super cold inside because the window was wide open. Between the chilly draft and the fairly generic popcorn chicken, it misses out on a full 5 stars.
