Steamed Rice Rolls is an Asian staple. There's a variation of it in most East Asian cultures. In particular the style here is focused on the Chinese style, and they have declared themselves the King. I am happy to say, in my opinion, that they deserve the title. Their menu primarily focuses on variations of their specialty, the steamed rice rolls. They take about 20 minutes to prepare because they make them fresh. You can tell as soon as your chopsticks tug on the rice rolls, that you're in for some good times. We tried the steamed rice rolls with egg ( with various fillings). They don't wrap the rolls around scrambled eggs, the eggs are steamed into the rice mixture so it becomes a literal part of the wrapper. Everyone loved it. The decor inside is very casual and cute, giving off vibes of comfort food and cute signs inside. They even have their own tiny parking lot, a luxury in Portland. I only have to warn people that their bathroom leaves a bit to be desired. Overall if you enjoy steamed rice rolls, I highly recommend. I've only been to SRRK 3x since they've opened, and I really dig their rice noodle rolls so much that I've not explored much else of the menu. Everything is made and steamed fresh to order, but there is a thinness and delicateness and quality here that beats out the dim sum places and is among the best rice noodle rolls at this price point. The prices are really really really cheap and is among one of the better values in town for a quick no frills meal. Besides how often can you say something is an incredible value or cheap in Portland these days? At most dim sum places serving rice noodle rolls you usually just get plain, shrimp, or beef. Here I've counted like 11+ variations of fillings which is wild. For instance, where else have you seen corn, chinese sausage, or spam as a filling option before? They had 18 different items in their snack section that were $7.50 and under including wings, takoyaki, fried mushrooms, crab puffs, fried bananas and more. The rice rolls had a great texture, silky and soft. I preferred the beef over the egg. It's really cool to have specialty Chinese food like this. I've had steamed rice rolls before, but as only a single item on a long dim sum menu. Having an entire menu of them was quite the experience. We got both corn and shrimp rolls, as well as some fried things. Next time we visit we'll try the congee, which looked good. Having been away from the Cantonese scene in Portland for a few decades got me worried, but with restaurants like Steam Rice Roll King, I am not as concerned that Portland Chinese restaurants will lose the unique Cantonese flavor. This place specializes in Cheurng Fun, or the "rice roll" often eat at dim sum restaurants. You'll find some great HK style comfort dishes too like Xiduoshi (french toast with condensed milk), very smooth juk, and others. There's a lot of variety you can choose from and customizations you can do to them. We also ordered other things to try like their chicken wings which were so savory and perfectly crunchy. These are the freshest most bounciest silky rice noodles you'll ever encounter pretty close to the Cheng fun cart in NYC. I love this place! After the Korean mama craze died down I have been here several times. The steam rice roll king dish is my favorite. It reminds me of Look Fun that you find in Hawaii. I have gotten the regular noodles and the steam rice noodles with brisket and with the dipping sauce it's fantastic. The texture was chalky, gritty, not smooth-like they pulverized the rice down but not fine enough? It was close to inedible. The only thing on the plate that made these edible was the sugar soy sauce on top. Which they drench the rolls with. Maybe to cover up the terrible texture and taste. I ate some of each roll and did not take the rest home. I ALWAYS take my leftovers. They are making a killing here, but they really need tons of improvement before I will ever return. Context I went on a Tuesday before noon. I was glad this worked out because I was on hangry energy. Food wait time was 16 mins. Steam rice noodles were super bouncy, chewy, and smooth. The Carbo-'meter went off the hook for me. There was no gritty texture as the rice batter for this was done well. Portions were reasonable too as I got full after one plate (but options are important). The sauce on the rice noodle rolls was a good amount and tasted like savory beef broth and soysauce (it was good). It was definitely not bland at all. I enjoyed the beef rice roll the most (would recommend for newbies) and will try the brisket next. Service was average and they did give me a warm soy milk when I sat down (it was so good). Also note these noodles and the ones from dimsum are slightly different. These are made in a smaller pan so the batter is pushed toward to give a folded look. They are more like street style steam noodles. The ones at dimsum are done in a giant sheet pan and only folded one or two times. So those are more even. Phone will be ringing off the hook because this place is super popular with elders and families. A lot of people order To-go. Seating is simple - don't go in groups of 3 or more it's hella small inside. Wear a coat as some of their seating is by the door. Yes they have a bathroom. I went here for lunch one day and although the food was not bad, I had a terrible experience. I came in at 12pm, and was told that there was going to be a 15-20 minute wait. I was totally okay with it but that 20 minute wait turned out to be 40 minutes, and I was getting hangry at this point. Once we were seated, it took about another 20 minutes just for our order to be taken. Despite being the only ones waiting for the duration of the 40 minutes, all the other tables had their order taken before us (no exaggeration, I believe it's because we were in the back corner). As someone who worked in service, I believe it's only proper to keep track of who has arrived first and treat them in that order. People who arrived after we got SEATED had their orders taken before us because they were ready and closer to the front. AND to top it all off, they serve the food table by table. For example, they will deliver the entire order of a table before they start serving on the next one. So, since our table had our order taken last, we were the last to have our food delivered to our table. This took another 35-40 minutes. The tables that arrived after we got seated (but their orders taken first) had left by the time we got our food. I really tried to be understanding because there was only one woman working the front, but to wait for 2 hours for the service was insane. And, the food was just alright. There was only one person attending to the tables, which made it more difficult. When we finally were seated, we were given menus and a warm cup of milk, which was amazing by the way and brought nostalgia back from when I was a child. This is where having 1 waitress became a bigger burden and we could see why the wait time took awhile. From being seated, another 20 minutes elapsed to finally putting in order in, and then another 20 minutes to getting the food. The rice rolls were really good, but I would skip the noodles and just order rice rolls if we were to come back. We sat for another 10 minutes after telling the waitress we were done only to realize that we should just go up and wait at the front counter to pay.
