I went here for lunch today per the 4/5 stars & the fact that it was comparatively cheaper to other surrounding BBQ joints. Brought the food home but for a restaurant on one of the main town roads at lunch time on a Saturday, I had no wait time...there were MAYBE 5 families in the entire restaurant, Very, very, very average BBQ. So much so I'd say it's the BQQ equivalent of a Chili's. The brisket was dry, the BBQ sauce was way too runny to grip onto the meat, the Mac & cheese was tasteless, the banana pudding was from a mix or store bought, the baked beans were mush after the first chew, and the rolls are bland and dry. The ONLY notable bit from my lunch were their green beans which seem to have been simmering on the buffet line so long that they picked up notes of bacon with each bite-it was actually pretty tasty. With all of the being said, it seemed like the man, woman, and teenage son (that were preparing my food to be taken away) were a family and I do admire family restaurants! I could have done better grilling at home. I ordered two 2 meat dinner entrees; brisket, turkey and ribs. Mac & cheese, green beans, fried okra & french fries as sides. The meat was ok. The bad news was the side dishes. The mac & cheese was bland & watery, the BBQ sauce was watered down as well. The green beans and fried okra was ok. I mean you can't really mess up green beans and okra. The other side dishes; served similar to buffet style were dry and looked as if they had been sitting for several hours. Wow! This place is an amazing, family/friend oriented BBQ restaurant. You order at the counter. I ordered the lite size. My husband got two meats. The brisket was so tender and tasty. We met our friends from Lewisville here on our way driving from CA to Houston, TX. We had a great reunion. Restaurant wasn't loud at all. Plenty of seating. Very helpful staff. I thought this place was wonderful. We are from Austin and we have a plethora of great barbecue restaurants to choose from. So I have a very good basis for comparison. While not beating out the top restaurants in Austin this one does a great job for the price and location. And we love the retro atmosphere. We felt like we were in another place completely. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The brisket was super moist, tender and delicious. And the ribs and sausage were great. The jalapeño beans were just OK but the green beans were exceptional. My sister had the fried okra and she said it was to die for. Don't look at all the grumpy bad reviews. Juicy, flavorful, and just what all the fancier places SHOULD be doing. I will admit that I discovered Big Jacks by accident. I was tasked with bringing food over for a get together with friends and I randomly pulled into the parking lot of this VERY unassuming place. When I arrived at my friend's house, there was a small celebration about my choice. A couple folks were already huge fans and the rest rapidly converted. It was a small worship service at the Altar of Meat. Don't judge a book by its cover. This is the BBQ you want. First of all, the service was good and the staff very friendly when we walked in. Ordered the St. Louis Style Ribs Plate with coleslaw and baked beans on the side. The ribs were probably the worst I've ever had. Bland, tasted old and like they had sat in a crockpot for several hours too long. For sure not grilled or smoked. Sure, the meat technically fell off the bone, but not the way it's supposed to. The barbecue sauce was super watery. The sides were pretty standard, nothing special, about as good as you'd get from a grocery store deli. Was a pretty disappointed considering all the rave reviews on here, but I've legit had much better BBQ at Dickey's, which is pretty low bar. read more

Let me first say that being from the south, I've had so much bbq. I grew to just dislike the taste due to the flame and char. This place has restored a little more joy for bbq. The meats were tender, juicy, and quite flavorful. The rolls fresh warm and soft. They just melt in your mouth. I made myself slider bites. A little drizzle of bbq sauce, it was finger licking good. Hopefully they didnt see me doing it. The sides, oh my some one has stolen grandmas recipe. They complimented the meal so greatly. I would most definitely come back to this spot. Yelpers....you let me down. I was hoping this would compare to hard 8, but I was sadly disappointed. My favorite part: free ice cream like Dickey's. The prices seemed a little high for what you were given. The sides were a little bland. Could have been what we ordered I guess. The meats didn't have much flavor though. The sauces were also really thin. The inside of the restaurant was like a mess hall. Bus your own tables and whatnot. Not super impressed and I likely won't be back. I tried to like this place, and with a 4.5 star review on Yelp I thought I would. I tried two different times but both were the same. The BBQ is mediocre, and the potato salad was like runny mashed potatoes with potato salad flavor. To me, true BBQ is tested by the brisket, and Big Jack needs to learn about better spices and smoking. It was just okay, and definitely nothing to write home to Mom about. I brought my mother with me and she agreed! The sausage was good but like most other places. The fried okra was hot, but only because they just made it for us since the guy at counter said we wouldn't want the okra that had been sitting out. Haven't been there l in a while and I was craving bbq. Went a couple of weeks ago for take out and found the brisket to be drier than usual so I sauced it up. Things went downhill when I found a long hair intertwined in a rib. It wasn't my hair as my hair is nowhere near that long. So gross that I threw everything out after this. For Mother's Day my son's asked where I wanted to eat and I told them about Big Jack's, I went and picked up our meal, I choose the XL Family Wagon, 3 lbs. of meat with all the fix'ns Boy were my Son's surprised with how good it was and the amount of food you got for your money. I had a $5.00 off coupon so the cost was lower. Needless to say the boys said WOW Mom glad you wanted this for your special day meal. But really once you add the sauce it does balance out the flavor. And mix the reg and spicy bbq sauce for a custom blend. Sides: Cole slaw. Wow, look at all these wonderful reviews on Yelp! Those are what led me here and boy was I disappointed. It isn't often that Yelp lets me down, but this one of those times. Being a Texan, BBQ is in my blood and so it is with a sad heart that I leave such a review. I really do not know how the reviews are so great. Let's start: Seating/interior: Plenty of seating although due to being sectioned off, makes one part kind of odd to get in/out of. There is only one door to the place so you have to walk all the way around to leave when people are entering. No biggie, but still would be nice to have better access than going against the flow of entry traffic. (although there was no line while I was there) Price: Might be the only good part. BBQ can be pricey. Big Jack here has a bit lower prices, but only by a small margin. Really didn't even notice other than to write this review. Food: Here we go. I got a three meat place so I could try different things. I got chicken, brisket and jalapeno sausage with potato salad and green beans for sides. The potato salad was basically pureed taters that you could call baby food. Flavor was ok, but nothing special. Green beans were a bit too sweet for my liking and needed some seasoning. The meats; the meats were just blah. None of them had that smokey flavor that you want in good BBQ and the chicken had more than the other two. The brisket was tender and had a nice smoke ring, but again, the flavor just wasn't there. Jalapeno sausage was not bad on the flavor scale, but again, nothing to write home about. No snap to the casing. The sauce, which they pour on your meat for you, was not thick enough nor was it spicy enough. I couldn't tell you what region of the country this sauce was modeled after, but it wasn't Texas. Unfortunately, this is one BBQ place that I won't be visiting again. Big Jack's replaced another BBQ place that had been there before. The other place was solid, but also kind of gloomy which is why I never really went. Big Jack's spruced the place up quite a bit and now the restaurant has a more open and inviting persona about it. The two guys working (I think they own the place) were super friendly. I liked that they had a large selection of sides in a self serve buffet style table up at the front and even though it towards the end of the day the buffet table was clean and all the sides looked appealing. I took home some rice for my self and mac and cheese for the Mrs. both were tasty! Nobody really goes out for BBQ to enjoy the side. but I thought it was classy of them to have some variety. Whenever I check out a new BBQ place I like to get a little of all the meats. This time I think I got everything except pulled pork and chicken. Sausage was tasty and had a nice smokiness to it. Brisket, was solid it cut into nice strips and was not mushy or the sawdust that passes for brisket in so many NTX establishments. My only criticism of the brisket would be that there was no bark. It's not a dig on the place, it's just that I really like a nice bark on BBQ. Ribs were good and cook about perfectly with nice flavor. My only complaint about the ribs would be that they were Baby Backs and not Spareribs. I prefer spareribs myself and would gladly pay more for them. The turkey breast was delicious and what will get me back there again. Juicy, smokey and cooked perfectly. Like the brisket there was no bark, however, this turkey was so damned tasty, I didn't care. Big Jack's does run out of stuff, which I respect because it means their not reheating yesterdays food and trying to pass it off fresh. There is a lot of BBQ places to choose from in the Lewisville area, but I would recommend giving Big Jack's a try. Don't let the strip center location fool you... This is an extremely high quality smokehouse! The brisket and jap sausage is excellent... (close to Hutchins level) The sides are great and they always give you a sample of whatever you're considering... not to mention they typically give big portions so the value is there... $12.99/lb for just about everything.
