What an amazing restaurant! We stopped by here with the family and loved everything we had. The appetizers were amazing, especially the Utica greens. I was excited to go here because it's always off-season when I drive by there, so it was nice to actually have the opportunity to go inside this adorable building! You walk into a patio type area that's all enclosed, then there's a bar, then the back room has lots of railroad memorabilia. I would have liked to learn more about this specific station. We were the only ones there, two folks order the prime rib special which was good and came with salad and choice of potato, I ordered the crab cake and my friend ordered the haddock, shrimp, and scallop dish. The service was fantastic, the food was good. Not the best food in town, but it was nice to have the opportunity to enjoy a meal here! read more

I've driven by this place a few times and decided to stop in for a Saturday lunch. They do have a reasonable lunch menu prices were reasonable portion sizes were good. Service was good and I really enjoyed the old train station with all the local and railroad history throughout the place. My wife ordered a salad with grilled chicken nice portion size and really tasty she enjoyed that. I had their take Philly half sub with fries, good size good taste and I especially love the role that it was on very fresh and soft I enjoyed it. My daughter had a grilled cheese sandwich and fries and she enjoyed it thoroughly also what kid does not love a grilled cheese sandwich. We did get a look at their dinner menu and I must say I'm going to have to make the trip out to big moose station to check out some of those items they really look tempting. read more

I really hate giving reviews like this but out meal was that bad. Let me start off by saying that the place is a cool old railroad station. Lots of old pictures on the walls and a very rustic atmosphere. We had a reservation for 6:30 and I the place was completely empty except one table of two. We had 9 adults and 2 toddlers. The entire time we were there not one other party came in. That should have tipped me off. The service from our waitress was the only bright spot of the meal. She was very attentive with drink refills and pleasant. Every single dish we ordered (veal, seafood platter, chicken, pasta) was disgusting. Everything tasted like a microwave dinner. The veal and seafood were overcooked and mealy. The veal looked like cat food. No one finished their meal. When we mentioned this to our server she was very apologetic. She took off 50% of two of the meals. Not nearly enough for inedible meals but I don't think it was her call as she went to the back to speak with someone else. Our family comes to the ADK every year and this year we decided to break away from our usual go to restaurants and try something different. Big mistake :( read more

3.5 stars... The Big Moose Station bar and restaurant was originally a train station that was built in 1926 (which replaced a train station built here in 1892). The station is actually at the highest elevation of any train station east of the Mississippi at 2,044ft. After finding the place on Yelp and checking their online menu I came here for breakfast to try their biscuits and gravy. Unfortunately the website isn't kept up to date and that item is no longer on the menu. The breakfast menu is very small but reasonably priced (almost everything is under $7). I wished I could say that the place was amazing but it was just average. For $7 I got 3 eggs (which were dry and not very hot), 2 pieces of toast, a small amount of hash browns, and 2 strips of bacon. I may have been inclined to round up but a few waitress quirks made rounding down the more reasonable decision. When refilling water or coffee our waitress took our mug/glass into the other room and came back with it refilled (a strange practice). I'm also not a fan of when a waitress congratulates me for finishing my food and comments that I must have been hungry. I'm good friends with a girl who used to waitress at a nice restaurant in Boston and she told me you could get fired for saying such a thing to a customer where she worked. I'm not discouraging patronage to the Big Moose Station as the food was decent, the waitress was nice, the prices were cheap, and they take credit cards. I'm simply putting out there that the online menu is off, the breakfast menu is on the smaller side, and the food is average at best. read more

We, meaning my family and any other friends that happen to be with us, take weekend pilgrimages to the Adirondacks throughout the winter. Big Moose Station is always on our hit list when we're in the area. Opening early for breakfast and serving dinner until 10pm, this place never disappoints. The scallop entree on the dinner menu is a must try, we must have consumed this item 10 different times over the years and the scallops are always cooked and seasoned exactly the same, delicious! Rick offers Wiener Schnitzel, a favorite of his, which is also always excellent. The atmosphere is rustic and friendly, the service sometimes requires patience but they don't frown on serving yourself a beer from the cooler when they're busy. The restaurant is right off snowmobile trail 2 or 3 and on Big Moose road. They are definitely snowmobiler friendly, about a thirty minute trail ride at moderate speeds from Old Forge. Worth the drive for good food and to hear the stories from your hosts on how the local tourism began with the advent of the railroad and this original train station now turned restaurant. Watch the local paper for their weekly specials but everything on the menu is good! read more

We were driving through the Adirondacks for fall leaf season and drove out Big Moose road to go to the Station for lunch. Weather was iffy. As we approached the restaurant there was a neon "Open" sign in the window and the lights were on. We parked in the small lot and got out in the rain. Door was locked. Two "closed" placards in the window. Staff inside ignored us at the door. We went back to the car in the rain. I called them from the car and a woman answered. She couldn't tell me why we were ignored. Passed me off to the the owner/manager. He said they were full as if I couldn't see through the window that the place was empty. I suggested that if they were not open that they turn off the "open" sign that I was looking right at. He got angry with me. Needless to say, I will NEVER drive out to go to their restaurant again. I suggest that you not bother to go there unless you call from Rt 28 before driving the 10 miles up Big Moose road. In reading the other reviews, looks like the food would have been subpar anyway. Give the owner my regards! We went to the Little Fox just down the road and got great food and friendly service. I suggest that you go there instead. read more

The Big Moose Station is a hidden gem that you should most definitely seek out if your visiting the Central Adirondack region. This bar and restaurant is a converted train station from the old Adirondack line. When we first went there, it was right between the lunch and dinner menus and the place was a bit slow, it was October though, but the owner/cook was more than accommodating. He took the time to explain the menu, answer questions about the building and even showed us around. He takes his work seriously and they make a mean cheesesteak, we found out that hes from the Philadelphia area. But do yourself a favor and check this place out, its a little bit of a ride off of Rt. 28, maybe 10 miles or a little less, but the scenery is beautiful and the food is worth it. Also their bar looks beautiful, so have a drink or two. read more

For Father's Day my family and I went to the Big Moose Chapel. I wanted to find a place for us to eat and knew about the Big Moose Station but hadn't been there in a long time. I called to make reservations ahead of time only to find out they had not started opening for lunches yet only dinner. When I told the person about our Father's Day plans and having a hard time finding a place for lunch he said to come anyway he would open just for us. It was Rick, the owner I talked to and I was amazed he would do that for people he didn't even know. There were 9 of us and we had a delicious lunch. Everything was fresh and tasted so good. We even had desert and the waitress was kind enough to put a candle in my daughter-in-laws cheesecake so we could sing happy birthday. Service and food were excellent. Made my 86 year old father very happy. We will be back! read more
