Popped by while on vacation with the family a few days go. Place was busy. The service was slow. They seemed to be understaffed so it wasn't a bother. Ordered a fish platter which consisted of seared wahoo, panko crusted shrimp, conch fritters, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, and cornbread. The good parts were the shrimp, veggies, and potatoes. Cornbread was ok. The fritters we're almost burnt and not good at all. The worst part of the meal I had the highest hopes for, ie the seared wahoo. Wahoo is a wonderful fish. Unfortunately it was so overcooked it practically turned the texture to that of overcooked chicken breast. Was really disappointed. Oh and I almost forgot about one other thing....the sweet tea. Yelp wins again. Came in late, 9pm place was booming earlier. The menu is enormous as are the portions. The fish and chips is very good. However the fried shrimp is amazing. The food is so good and the menu is so huge that we are here twice on our vacation in the Keys. The good... The food is delicious. The portions are huge. We could have split the entrees between two people they are so big. The not so good...both times we ate here, one of the items we ordered was not prepared by the kitchen and did not come out with the entire order. While the waitresses apologized profusely, they did not offer to comp the entree. In most cases, I don't expect for restaurants to do so, but both times everyone else in our family of four had finished their meal before the late entree arrived. Clean place but the food is not great. Their menu is way to huge like a Cheesecake Factory. And if you are in the keys....there is no need for a 100 food selection menu. That should tell you right there they can't cook. They must throw away tons of Tator Tots! I ordered an egg sandwich and it was way to big! They served it on sourdough which I hate. The side was tator tots and they must have put over 75 tator tots on my plate and I felt kind of bad that I only ate a few bites and did not want to take the meal home because it was so bleh. I do not give five stars often. A small restaurant and obviously locals know it, Late lunch after a long day and the place was packed. We grabbed three spots at the bar and Carly greeted us right away. Menu was huge....only bust I could make because if there is so much how can you do it all great. Our group ordered from three different parts of the menu. and they did it great. BE WARNED THE PORTIONS ARE HUGE. My chicken philly was great. Not greasy but very flavorful. Bread was soft. Fries were not....they were perfect. Refills and a to go drink as we headed out.....The seating was a little hard to figure out with a mishmash of tables booths etc. As other has mentioned in reviews the service was awesome. Our server Carly and a few others as the mingled past were talkative and engaging. There is risk in the huge menu but I am confident if you were not happy they would make it right. Terrible Experience for Take Out I hate to write this review but our take out & customer service experience was so bad. We ordered over $100+ of takeout (+11 in tip), including the very pricy lobster rolls and a veggie sandwich with NO cheese. We waited over an hour in the parking lot waiting for our food with the Server saying - "will be 2 mins", "will be right out", "wrapping up now", finally after getting out food we took it to the beach to eat and had no silverware and the veggie sandwich had cheese on it so one person could not eat. I called about this poor experience and the manager said "so sorry" come by and she would comp me with a giftcard for the entire order. *The Reason* for this review - I called back the next day to confirm that if I made the 20 min drive to the restaurant she would in fact comp me with a gift card for our entire purchase, the manager said yes as long as you have the receipt, which I had -- when I got there it was a different story - instead of comping us with the $100+ order which took 45 mins past the pick up time - she said she would only comp $25 for the veggie sandwich which they messed (not including the $11 tip we left). I left without anything. DO NOT tip ahead of time & make sure you check your order for takeout! Very disappointed in the lack of respect from here. Plus the lobster rolls were just OK. read more

Made me walk to her. Also found a large dark red hair in the food. Not sure what happened to this place but the quality if far inferior to just two months ago. Ok so I'm born and raised in the keys and as someone who lives in the lower keys, take out is important. Especially when you work in key west and get home too late to start cooking. Well, I wouldn't recommend the Big Pine Rooster, formally known as Bucktooth Rooster, and Big Pine Coffee Shop (excellent) prior to that. There's a reason why my family has only physically eaten here twice, but this time I said let me try take out and see what happens. After calling to place an order, I find out (though answering machine) that they don't take orders over the phone .... Take out orders need to be placed online or in person at the restaurant. So I go online, only to find out that I can't place a custom order, such as adding or removing items from a quesadilla for example or it only has "soup of the day" but their menu shows corn chowder so which is it? I'm not going to blindly pay for something that I don't know what I'm getting. I then turn to placing a physical order at the restaurant. So I take the 10 mins to drive there. Walk in and wait a couple of minutes. The waitress comes and asks if I need help, I say yes, I need to place an order to-go. She looks at me and says, "Well you're going to need to wait a minute". Ok, so I wait, 10 more minutes and at this point I just decided to leave because I felt their customer service was crap from the moment I tried calling to place a pick up order to all the time spent just to try and place an order that was never placed. read more

Driving up Route 1 in the Keys, we lamented the closing of Springers. But recommendations from vendors at the BPK flea market took us to Bucktooth Rooster. Friendly greeting and service. Walking in, it looks like a bar and local hangout, but true to the recommendations, the food is outstanding. We had the special, crab-stuffed Lobster; the lobster was perfectly prepared. There was so much food, we took the deviled crab part home for the next day. All the items other patrons ordered looked expertly prepared and delicious. When this establishment used to be the Bucktooth rooster it was outstanding quality, quantity, and value. We ordered two ceasar salads, one with salmon and one with scallops and shrimp for delivery. The salads barely had any lettuce, and even less parmesan cheese. Can you spare some lettuce and cheese? We asked for side dressing, and they both came dressed. The shrimp and scallops were two small shrimp and two medium size scallops. The salmon was the only fair portion, but was undercooked and quite raw in the middle. You too can have all this for the whopping price of $47.00. That's right folks, for two skimpy salads we paid over $50 with tip. Such a shame to see the new owners aren't up to snuff, especially with locals who would have placed orders on a regular basis. The pandemic is no excuse to rip people off. Just a shame. read more

Biggest mozzarella sticks I've ever seen! A patron at another table had a baby back rib platter that made my husband drool. We just had apps and drinks, but the food and menu were really good. Let's start with the bad... get that out of the way. When we enter entered we were kindly greeted and told that they were no longer sitting anyone. It was 7 pm and they close at 9 pm. Needless to say we were a bit confused. We asked if there was a wait time or if they were done seating for the night, they said it was for the night. The waitress said goodbye and told us to have a good night. We walked out and decided to get a carry out. I went back in and I spoke with someone else who said they are seating people just in a short time (5-10 minutes). Now for the good part, the second person I spoke with (gentleman in chef's pants) was very polite and kind. We were seated outside and safely distanced away. They do have a thermometer at the door as well. In terms of Covid it was very clean and comfortable. The food was absolutely outstanding. We had the shrimp Alfredo and fish and chips as well as the key lime pie. The ONLY negative thing was how we were initially turned away and greeted. It definitely left a bad taste in our mouths. Local, this is the second time there in a year, the first visit was a nightmare and food was gross, how can u make a burger disgusting, try one here, this morning ordered a simple 2 egg breakfast and after a 40 min wait (only 4 other tables, not busy) it was cold, over easy eggs were solid , toast was old , bacon was sour and please dont get me started on the grits or pancakes. Your better off eating road kill iguanas off the highway. Dont waste your time or money it sucks . Hopefully, they will close due to health violations and someone that can cook will occupy the space. Sad to see this place like this. As big pine locals we have stopped going here because of the decline in service and quality. After the name changed from Bucktooth to Big Pine it has gotten even worse. It had been about 6 months from our last visit but we figured we would try one more time. This time we did a take out order and after 30 min I arrived. When I walked in I stated I had a Togo order. One of the wait staff said ok but never asked for a name or what I ordered .. after sitting there ignored and not offered a drink or a status update, 35 min my order finally was placed in front of me. While waiting 3 guests walked out after receiving their food because it was " uneatable". When I got home .. the entire order was overdone or undercooked. There was not one thing in the 75.00 we spent that anyone enjoyed. Was a waste of time and money. Will not be going back agin. read more

Hair in food= bad Hair in food twice= two bad we came. But in all reality please check your food before you eat it. Oh and you even get ONE FREE refill on your fountain soda. How kind.. The food was pretty tasty before discovering the hair. We showed the waiter and asked for a different menu item and it promptly came out. Highly disappointed: this place came highly recommended, so we came hungry after a day on the water. Unfortunately, this place was horrible. I ordered the Ultimate Seafood Dinner which was supposed to have fresh never frozen Mahi, fresh shrimp and a crab cake. They were out of crab cakes, so they subbed extra shrimp. I love blacked Mahi so I ordered everything blackened. When it arrived it was way over seasoned, the blackening was caked on. I was able to scrape most of it off the shrimp and eat those, they did not taste fresh. Next up the Mahi, the fish was rubbery and again did not taste fresh at all, I did not eat it. Then we get to the sides... mashed potatoes were actually fresh and had a good flavor, fresh fruit was also good, but the cornbread was a solid brick and not eddable. Today, Sunday, i took my brother to breakfast. We both had the buffet. On the plus side, the sausage patties were tasty and the bacon was good, but...The restaurant is small and not set up for a buffet the dining room resembled a Chinese fire drill. the eggs and pancakes were passable but the grits and sausage gravy were the consistency of modeling clay. The biscuits were dry and hard and tasted as if they had been microwaved. If you go to this restaurant, go for lunch or dinner as the food and choices for these times are quite good. My advice for the management is go back to made to order breakfasts and forget the buffet. read more

I have to begin by saying that the service here is great. The staff had the right mix of relaxed and attentive. They were always available when something was needed but they were not overwhelming. I liked their overall friendly demeanor. The food on the other hand was average at best. I ordered stir-fry vegetables over yellow rice. Unfortunately, they coated the veggies and rice heavily in teriyaki sauce which rendered it inedible even for me. The waiter was extremely helpful when I asked for plain rice to scoop the veggies onto, but I will not be ordering that dish again. I think in the future they could've chosen to use less sauce over the veggies (none o the rice) or they might consider putting the sauce on the side. A nice soy sauce would've been fine too. The teriyaki was a bit heavy for the squash that they chose to use. I went with my friend and he got a chicken salad wrap. I'll tell you one thing, they do not skimp on portion sizes. This thing was a monster. It was definitely enough for two meals. While I did not taste it, I was told it was too heavy in mayonnaise. I cannot say either way, but I thought I'd add the info for anyone considering this item. What a pleasant surprise! Clean, lots of room and good food and drink. Our server was particularly good. Some women have a knack for making people feel at ease and welcome with just a look; and so it was with this girl. The decor at Bucktooth is natural pine with a glossy seal. We sat in the bar area and enjoyed our food while watching an addicting TNT channel that was showing film clips of boat accidents. It was hilarious and I could not stop my gewgaws and horse laughs watching people flip their boats, run into docks or get thrown from their boats and watch the boats jet away at full throttle to crash, overturn or who knows what. I could have sat there all day and watched the mindless clips. This entertainment coupled with alcohol and comfort food is an unbeatable combination. Unfortunately, I noticed the women had little interest in watching these things. There was more curiosity in why we men were finding the misfortune and destruction of others so entertaining. I will not pretend to understand women. Some things are self-evident and there be no need for explanation. Watching someone slip on a banana peel or crash their boat into the dock at full throttle is one of those self-evident incidents. Whatever. I'd go to any bar that showed those clips. Better than sports. The food at Bucktooth is good and they had an obscure IPA that worried me because it was a citrus flavor; but it was just a hint, so it was plenty good and put me in that happy and warm zone so I could enjoy my crab cakes, watch the mayhem on TNT and listen to Sofie tell me things while she ate her lobster reuben. Sofie relished her lobster roll with lip smacking delight! We discussed why I love Bucktooth Rooster and hate NoName Bar and Grill. You already know why I love Bucktooth, but you will have to look up No Name to get the scoop on that place. Better yet, drive to No Name, walk in, walk out and go to Bucktooth Rooster to give extemporary exposition: "Contrast and Compare Bucktooth Rooster to No Name Pub" - a 10 point item on your Florida Keys exam. OMG, I can't say enough positive things about the food and Service at this restaurant. We've been in the keys for 16 days and the best food we've had has been consistently at Big Pine Rooster. The wait staff are very attentive. The prices are decent, but the food quality is amazing. I've had breakfast here about 6 times and I can't stop ordering the pancakes and eggs. Thank you for selling The Impossible Burger!!!!! This restaurant came up on a search I made when looking for vegetarian or vegan options on a trip from Key West to Islamorada. Not only do they have a huge menu for the meat-eaters in my family, but they had lots of veggie options for me!! The have so many homemade items and you can tell they take pride in the quality of food served.
