Stopped by Rays for the first time for lunch. It was 1:30 and there was still a line to order. It seemed that everyone was loading up with the blackened grouper sandwich, although the shrimp po-boy was looking pretty good. I ordered the grouper anyway. The sandwich comes with garlic fries which were good. The fish tasted fresh, however it was still undercooked in the thicker part of the filet. Looking to take a drive and have a lunch outside so we made the trip over to Tampa and Big Rays. Never been here before I got the grouper Reuben. It just sounded good. With a side of coleslaw. Very delicious. So many great flavors and all combined for a perfect bite. Loved the non creamy coleslaw. A nice touch. Deb had the lobster corndog. Huge! It had to be 2 lobster tails. Breading was light and crispy. Lobster was cooked well and tasted yummy! Great no nonsense spot for having some good food while enjoying the florida sunshine! Nice little spot with outside seating. The food is good and everything is fairly priced. The staff is friendly and even the cooks are great at taking to customers. They have a long menu so there are more than enough things to try. Hot sauce and ketchup should be in small containers instead of bottles. Seafood lovers rejoice! They have shrimp, grouper, oysters, lobster, and so much more you just tell them blackened or fried and it's coming out hot and fresh, cooked to perfection! They have a couple locations in the Tampa bay area, but the Interbay Boulevard location is exactly my speed; it's a really cute outside seating area with plenty of picnic tables, everyone of them is covered so no one is stuck sitting in the Florida sun, plenty of cool cross breeze coming through, and the best part is you can smell the lobster corn dogs being made while you're waiting for your order! Ran in for a quick lunch to grab a seafood sandwich. I've been here a few times, and Big Ray's always delivers. I ordered the blackened shrimp burger for a change of pace and waited a few minutes for my food. It's beens while since I've been here, but the food and service were just as good as I remembered. The prices have risen, but that's true of everywhere. My sandwich was great, with fresh lettuce and the perfect blend of spices and crispy crust on the "burger". What I ordered was good, but I think I know the food that would have been great. Before child, I used to write super long reviews about everything I thought of a restaurant. Now, I basically write so future Christina knows what she should or shouldn't order. Here we go with the bare basics (sorry, my reviews are no longer meant to help out anyone but myself, but if you benefit from these, great!) Since Big Ray's is about thirty minutes from my house, I sent my husband to pick up food from here for my birthday lunch (when else can you convince your husband to drive an hour round trip for food he's not excited about?) In the future, I think I'd want to consume it on property. Unfortunately, the fries and onion rings were lukewarm and soggy by the time it got home. Not Big Ray's fault at all, but good to know for future me. I got the Grouper Reuben. Next time I should get the Grouper sandwich (blackened). The thousand island dressing and the swiss cheese overpowered the fish IMO. The fresh fish really is the star of the show here, so there's no need to dress it up. I also found the onion rings oddly bland. It could have used some seasoning and see above about how it doesn't travel well. They were out of fish dip, so I went with conch fritters instead. Love these! I still want to try the fish dip next time if it's available, but I thought the conch fritters were super tasty and filled with conch. I did get a grease headache from my meal, so next time if I do get conch fritters I should forgo the onion rings (and maybe even the fries). Husband got the hot chicken sandwich. He did not like the dressing (it smelled like thousand island, but I didn't taste it and my own thousand island might have just been overpowering all other smells). He ended up wiping it off, but he really liked the sandwich. The chicken portion was huge. It came with parmesan fries. Next time get the sandwich sans sauce. We got my son the kid's corn dog. I was reading reviews about a lobster corn dog and kind of thought the corn dog might randomly turn out to be lobster. I don't think the lobster dog is on the menu anymore, his corn dog was definitely a hot dog. But it was a solid hot dog. My husband gives his corn dog two thumbs up (my son barely nibbled on it, but that's him). My son did eat his fries. The kids meal is huge, so if you have a picky eater, you can probably share. I'm not going to go out of my way to come here, since the food doesn't really travel well, but if I'm in the area, this is top of my list to eat at. read more

Visiting my nephew in Tampa and he really wanted us to try the blackened grouper sandwich here. I was blown away how delicious it was and the garlic fries were also so yummy. It seemed a bit expensive for a no frills place but it was a generous portion which I actually split with my husband and we were both full. Wish I lived closer but will definitely be back whenever I am in Tampa. read more

It may not be the most visually pleasing on the outside, think hole in the wall, but it makes some seriously awesome seafood. I highly recommend the grouper cheeks. Not sure how this place received such high ratings. Came for the oysters they were all out, food was mediocre, and the $7 corn dog was swimming in oil. All the seating is outside and could not find one clean table. They were dirty picnic tables and had to be swatting flies. Ketchup bottles were empty. Had to go inside to ask for condiments when there were 3!people working and not doing anything and we're the only customers there. I don't mind rustic outdoor seating but keep it clean. We drove out to Tampa bay after going to Busch Gardens based upon the reviews from Yelpers. This is a small place away from the water that serves seafood. You order at the counter, then you can either eat outside, or at one of the 4 tables in the small indoor area. The blacken grouper sandwich was flavorful, and delicious. The fried shrimp and fried grouper sandwich were nicely fried with light coating, but lacked flavor. We tried eating outside, the tables were old and rough. There were so many flies outside that made it difficult to enjoy our food while trying to swat them away from our food. We then moved inside to the equally rough area, that had a small wall air conditioning, and I felt that the cramped space was uncomfortable to eat there. We felt the food was good, the lady at the counter was very nice and helpful. But we are unlikely to rush back anytime soon with the prices that are now $25 a grouper sandwich and not a great dining experience. read more

Big Ray's has been on my radar for a while, but we just never seem to get that far down in South Tampa to stop by. On our way back from Brandon, we decided to take the detour and head over to check out the "famous lobster corndog". We arrived to the aroma of fresh batter and a line out the door. Despite being a bazillion degrees outside, the picnic tables on the patio were very well shaded and the fans kept us cool. Hubby was expecting more of a restaurant atmosphere but once the food arrived, he officially became their newest fan! Usually when I suggest lunch out, it means "atmosphere". Well despite being rustic, the atmosphere is there! I can imagine that at night, once those cafe lights illuminate, there's probably a lovely vibe going. Especially in the cooler weather. The lobster corndog was more than I could eat by myself. Don't get me wrong, I tried, I really did. The onion rings were perfectly crispy but I was so busy filling up with lobster that I failed to give them proper attention. Hubby got the Hot Chicken Sandwich and it had just the right heat and crunch. That's an important ratio. We got a slice oof Key Lime Pie to go, but he ate that himself. It looked good. Portions are huge! Service was fast and super friendly! Great for a lunch for two or even a bigger crowd. It's a small kitchen so a little wait is to be expected. Was there last year quite a few times. Enjoyed it. However, went there for the first time this year as we live out of state. We here for the winter months. We were very disappointed. Service was Ok. The shrimp basket that we normally order was very old batter. Oil must have been old as we both commented on this. Shrimp were smaller and there was a price increase. This hole in the wall is known for their blackened grouper sandwich, which I ordered. It's pretty simple and comes with lettuce shreds, onion, tomato and tartar sauce on a sesame seed bun. For this price, I would have loved to get a brioche or better quality bun, but beggars can't be choosers. The sandwiches came with fries, cole slaw, (or onion rings for a $1 upcharge). They were out of the conch fritters and oysters when I came, otherwise would have ordered one of those. Seafood, seafood, seafood! If you are a fan of all things seafood, this place is a must try. The portion size was good given the price and the food was delicious. But heads up! It's very heavy depending on what you order. We ordered the Blackened Grouper Sandwich and the lobster corn dog... and we were stuffed! The blackened grouper sandwich was a jaw dropper. As you can see from the picture, it was a HUGE sandwich! The grouper was amazingly seasoned and most importantly it was juicy! The lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and tarter sauce complimented the fish so well but one thing I felt was too overbearing were the buns. The buns were really thick and unfortunately hid the above mentioned flavors. I had to remove the bottom bun and eat the grouper with one bun. Overall, I really enjoyed the grouper and the added fries were BOMB! Super crunchy and seasoned well (I believe with Parmesan and garlic). Lastly, we had the lobster corn dog! We expected the lobster corn dog to taste like batter and lobster meat... but man we're we wrong. The batter had a distinct citrus flavor (similar to a key lime pie). I don't know if that's because they use the same batter to fry the key lime pies they make or if that was intentionally how the batter always tastes... but it was delicious with the lobster. It added a depth of flavor we were not expecting and the dipping sauce was amazing! Would we order this again? Probably not, it was more of a novelty than anything but man was it fun to eat. Big Ray's Fish Camp makes the absolute perfect fish sandwich that's about the best on the planet. It's my favorite kind of place. Simple food done perfectly. It's a little out of the way down toward MacDill AFB, but well worth the effort to seek it out. It has parking available, and for seating offers a nice set of picnic tables or some indoor seats. My wife and I made the trek down during a work stay in the Westshore area of Tampa by the airport. This was our third excursion down to Big Ray's. Each time its just been fabulous. I had the Grouper Reuben and my wife had the fried Grouper Sandwich both with amazing onion rings. It's just done so well. Perfectly cooked fish on the fried Grouper Sandwich Flakey, but not greasy at all. Great toppings. A Grouper Reuben just sounded so wrong the first time I saw it on the menu. Then I tried it. This was one of the higher rated restaurants around Tampa and when I saw there was a Lobster Corndog, I was sold. There was a line out the door when I arrived, but it didn't take long to get my food ordered. There is seating outdoors and indoors. I was the only one sitting indoors for a while. It was busy but peaceful. I knew I wanted the corndog but asked for suggestions as well and they were happy to provide! The Lobster Corndog was good, but not worth the hefty price. The lobster was a little tough and hard to get off the stick. The honey mustard sauce was good but I think a garlic butter to dip it in would be even better! Overall it was cool to try but I wouldn't order it again. The garlic parmesan fries though...those were top notch! I also got the Smoked Fish Dip which was delicious (not sure where my picture of it went). I would definitely go back to try other menu items even if it is pricey, it's worth it! In 2015, The Tampa Bay Times featured this restaurant & its popular entree-- the Grouper Sandwich w/ side of fries. Not much has changed since then. The wonderfully friendly & helpful young woman @ the register (w/ the dark hair & wrist tattoo) recommended I order my Grouper blackened. She also suggested I order my $10 Grouper Cheeks fried; she was spot on regarding both entrees-- SEE PICS! My refrigerator is smiling w/ all the delicious leftovers within:) I also ordered a side of fries (included w/ my Grouper Sandwich) & a side of Coleslaw ($2). The herb & Parmesean fries were good, but I'm just not a big fan of any fries coated in flour before cooking. The slaw was not for me. It wasn't mayo-based (I tasted vinegar, which I detest.); it was slightly dry; & it had some heat. The added pepper added to that heat. (I'll try the Onion Rings on a return visit.)
