I was able to get my car there where they looked at it right away. He confirmed exactly what I feared and that my transmission was out. But he was able to pull some info up and found that my transmission might be inside of the dealer warranty and so he sent me on my way to the dealer. He did not have to give me that info, I was stranded out of town and he could of easily taken advantage of me... but he didn't. Very honest guy and I very much appreciate his help and kindness. I took my sports car to Big Reds about 10 years ago as a favor to a friend. It was a nightmare. They didn't even know how to put the car up on the rack without bending all of my fenders. I was having it painted next door at the same time and they fixed the dents for me since I could not deal with Ken anymore. While my car was there they let my hood fly off and had to replace it and they put the new one on incorrect. There were so many things that went wrong I could go on and on. After all the work was completed I parked my car in storage until recently selling it to someone that is restoring it. He is replacing everything in the engine only to find that Big Red did not put half of the bolts back in the car after working on it. Also some of the washers that were on the car were made out of beer caps flattened out. MGD light beer. I did not post anything on Yelp before since there was no yelp back then and even though I had a horrible experience I thought my car was fixed, not knowing that if I would have continued to drive it, I would have ruined my car. But finding all of this out now is just not acceptable. read more

We used Big Red for 2 years for our Mercedes Sprinter. We paid $1000's for preventative maintenance like changing the brake fluid, Transmission flush and many more. They also fixed things that were truly wrong like brake pads and glow plugs. The problem is they never performed the preventative maintenance that we paid for. Now we even have doubts on the rest. We took the van to an honest shop that showed us that the work was never completed, dirty transmission fluid and brake fluid that was mostly water according to the sensors. We asked Big Red to make good on the uncompleted work and we were even willing to pay again for the filters if they just covered the labor. Always the same run around on the phone that they had to talk to the manager and then never got back with us. This is a dishonest shop. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

This is my second time to come here, this time to get my struts replaced. Toyota Dealership was quoting me $2,000 to get it done, and i got it done today for a better price at Big Red's. Ken (the owner), is very professional, and honest. They get their customers through referrals, and word of mouth, which is great. Well, im here to attest that they do a great job and overall i would give them 5 stars. The staff here are nice and friendly, and there's an area where you can wait, with free wifi. I am definitely tired of going to places where they try to take advantage especially when they see you're a woman and think you don't know anything about cars and prices.... It all started when i was leaving for work, my car sounded like it was on its last leg. I made it to work barely. I took my car to big reds at almost closing, Benny looked at my car and found out it only needed spark plug and coil #4, he said he could fix it and got me a rental for the next day. Was living in Escondido temporarily when my car completely shut down on the freeway. Feared the worst. Because I was on my way to somewhere and could not take care of everything that night, I needed a place to keep my car overnight. Knowing that it would be after their business hours, Big Red's was still kind enough to stay open long enough to give me time to wait for a tow truck and have it towed there to leave overnight. I get a call the next morning and, to my embarrassment/relief, I had simply run out of gas and had killed the battery. (this is a new car for me, so I had not experienced what the car would do in this situation) They kindly recharged the battery and filled up the tank a bit for me. A week or so later, my check engine light comes on. I'm about 99% sure it is because I had left my gas cap loose, but wanted to double check. Again, they were kind enough to run the codes right then there and determined that yes, it was just my gas cap. No charge. Needless to say, even though I thankfully have only experienced minor, minor car trouble, Big Red's was kind and efficient every single time. They could have easily taken advantage of me, and it truly meant so much to find a repair shop that I could trust whenever I am back in the area. After 6 months of my car being in Big Reds I have finally decided to go somewhere else. I brought my car (Honda)in due to my engine seizing. They gave me an estimate and they started the work. As a month goes by I get calls saying the oil pump in my car went out or is bad so they replace it. I also ordered a brand new clutch for them to install. About a month later I get a call saying it's good to go and I go pick it up. First things I notice was the steering wheel was off. Not a huge problem just a small attention to detail at that point. A few weird sounds in the front of the car but I was on my way with full trust it was done. I heard a tapping coming from the engine a few hours from picking it up. I am very keen on having my car the way it was before. Fixed so I take it back. They look over it and it turns out that the brand new oil pump they put in wasn't working properly. The noise I heard coming from the engine was the crankshaft warring down on something so they had to get a new one. I get my car back a little over a month later and I am on my way again. A day or two later and I get stuck on the side of the road. The clutch wouldn't engage properly making clutch peddle loose to move around. There is also a horrible sound coming from the transmission which sounded like something went loose. I get it towed to Big Reds pretty mad at this point and say fix it. Come to find out that apparently the transmission wasn't put together properly. Two or three weeks later and I get my car back. Within 10 minutes of driving away from the shop the engine light comes on so I take it back. Over a month later I get my car back with zero problems. They ended up buying new parts because they just couldn't find what was wrong with the car. I drive the car around for a whole week which was the longest I had driven it since so long ago and I get stuck on the side of the road. Yet again the same issue with the clutch where the clutch was stuck with the clutch peddle free to move forward and backwards and a horrible rattling sound coming from the engine. This time I am stuck on base seeing as I am active duty military so I don't immediately get a tow but I decided this time I would take it somewhere else. The staff are super friendly and I'm sure can help with small repairs but I had a long 5 or 6 months of walking to and from work. Prices are fair but I didn't get the quality of work when my car was there. Best of luck for anyone bringing their vehicle to Big Reds Auto for anything more than an oil change or something simple. Update on my motor that they rebuilt. I am now at a different mechanic with the same issues. The mechanic told me "whoever machined the motor did not do a good job and it might need to be remachined". So on top of the hefty price I paid to rebuilt it the first time I have to do it again. I'm definitely hurting when it comes to trying to keep this thing running thanks to the original rebuild. read more

We brought our 2015 SPRINTER Van here last week and they were amazing. We made an appointment the day earlier and my wife brought our family van in for our schedule A service. With all of the filters and routine maintenance our cost was nearly half of what we had paid at the Mercedes dealership. They performed the work in about half the time as well. When I brought my car to them, it was to replace a Steering Pump, and fix a small oil leak. Up until that time, my car was running fine. After the Steering pump was fixed, I was told I had a right axle leaking grease, and I had them fix it. When my car was returned to me, I couldn't navigate in and out of parking spaces because of the steering. I also now had a problem of my car jumping while in idle, and in reverse. I brought it back to them for those problems, and was told I needed a Steering pump sensor (which they should have discovered while replacing the Steering pump, and that suddenly I had a broken head with no apparent reason. My car had never overheated while I had it. Then I was told my car was not driveable because the left front axle leaked all the grease. Why didn't they discover that while fixing the right axle? My car had never overheated, their shop did a pressure check on my radiator months ago, and told me it was solid, no leaks. Suddenly, I have a junker car that can't be driven. Really? read more

After reading all these great yelp reviews I was really hoping Red would be my go-to mechanic for the used Sprinter I just bought. Unfortunately, after my first experience with them, this will not be the case. Quick version: for $1500 I got slow service, sub-par communication, bad work, and they even managed to make one problem worse. I then had to fix the problem myself. Long version: Red's had my Van for over two weeks. I understand they are busy and this wouldn't be a big deal if they had good customer service.... But I didn't hear any updates from them for almost 10 days. I called to touch base and didn't receive a callback. I was told it would be done on a certain day only to have that be pushed back twice. I understand things get hectic and bad communication happens. I could over look it if the work they did was great. Unfortunately... ...the work was not great. They stripped the threads on one of the glow plugs they removed and that added $200 to the bill to rethread the cylinder. I know glow plug removal can be tricky but they also botched my radiator repair. I told them I had a slow leak that happens when I drive long distances and they replaced some hoses. After I got the van back I went to L.A. and the leak happened at a faster rate! I borrowed a pressure tester from Autozone an did a test on the radiator (something they said they did and charged me $66.50 for) I found 3 leaks from hoses that needed to be clamped tighter. One of these was from a new hose they put on. They made the leak worse and I question if I needed new hoses at all(which cost $164.46). I bet the original problem was just the other two loose hoses. After tightening all the hoses my coolant level has been holding fine. All in all I gave Red's $1,505.36 and for that amount of cash I expected a much better experience. read more

Ken and his staff at Big Red's are amazing, I have visited this shop a few times with in the last two years. Every visit has been surprisingly great, considering I was there due to car trouble. As a young female I tend to get intimidated by mechanics, because I have been tricked into paying for new parts or services I didn't need in the past. At Big Red's i never felt that way, they are probably one of the last HONEST mechanic shops around. Another thing to mention here is the great quality of work, all of the mechanic at Big Red's are knowledgeable and have great customer service!
