Yes, island prices abound but if you need to stock up here before heading to Waimea Canyon for a hike, or before your trip to Port Allen or even to Po'ipu, this market has the basics. Most associates are nice and there's a good discount on at least some fruit (kiwis!) and there's ample selection, although nothing in our opinion screamed amazing deal. the managers and several workers are super racist!! worst store experiences ever . i live very close and do not have a car but due to the way i am repeatedly treated because i do not speak phillipino and im white, from now on i will take a bus to Lihue to shop at safeway for grocerys. Worst shopping experience ever. often out of things so they must not understand how to order products. things are way more expensive than other stores. and the workers are rude and lazy and never concerened with even doing thier simple job! read more

Big Save is owned by Times so if you're trying to price shop on the island, you're going to find the same prices unless you're going out of your way to find a Safeway, or you're driving to Lihue to go to Target, Walmart or Costco. Store is older and the shelves need a good scrub and the ube in the freezer section looked freezer burnt with ice crystals in the package. Prices are high, but not nearly as high as they are up north in Princeville. My husband and I ended up getting Shaka Teas and then leaving as everything is pretty pricey. I went to Big Save in Eleele and found some awesome Hawaii wood puzzles and Hawaii hard books at very reasonable prices! A fraction of what I saw similar books for at other stores. Good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables and frozen foods for a small neighborhood grocery store. However, BEWARE the ground pork and beef! Have had stomach issues EVERY time I bought ground meat there in last 3 years, a total of maybe 5 times now. Seriously, don't buy the ground meat there. The whole meat seems okay. The refrigerators feel cold enough, so I dunno if they're thawing previously frozen ground meat at the wrong temperature, or just mixing old ground meat in with fresh, but something's wrong. My late husband was a chef for many years, and before he passed away in 2020 he had noticed a couple bad batches of ground meat I'd bought there, and told me not to buy ground meat there ever again! Unfortunately, I did again this week after not doing so for a couple of years. Big mistake. read more

Solid option for speedy and inexpensive poke with a huge array of meat options if you're in the area for a cruise, Waimea Canyon hike or lazy beach day. The ambiance here is very unfriendly. I feel like I'm being made to be uncomfortable just because homeless people are unwanted. So last week I had an hour wait for the next paratransit bus and decided to wait it out at Macdonalds because there are no longer benches outside the Big Save store. I was pushing my shopping cart over there and it locked up. I forgot that there are automatic locks in the wheels if you go past a certain perimeter. Another slam on us because of a fight to keep homeless away. So I left the cart and picked up my two big bags and was lugging them to Mc Donald's when I tripped over the curb and did a face plant right in front of the main entrance. People eating their lunches inside were treated to the sight of a 76 year old woman, blood on her face, sitting on the sidewalk surrounded by groceries. I guess I probably looked homeless! In ER I was diagnosed with a broken nose. So looking back on all this I sure wish that Big Save would find a little charity in their hearts. The biggest complaint I hear from older people about the place is there's no place to sit. read more

I live here.... so I go shopping here around 5 times a week. Yes, it is expensive compared to the mainland, but very conveniently located for those of us who live here or visitors that want to pic up a few items. 1. Alcohol is to your right, behind the cash registers. 2. Ice cream is all the way in the back on the right side. 3. Meat is to the left of the store and ground turkey is hiding in the top row in the middle of the meat section. 4. There is a water refill machine to the front of the store on the right (out side). 5. They are not strict on bags, so if you forget to bring your own they will give you a recyclable paper bag. Smaller size, less clean, & less selection than other Big Save markets on the island. My condo is in Po'ipu. I've stopped here twice while on the way to Waimea. Even though I'm a nice tawny skinned Italian who always smiles with aloha & dresses local style when in Kauai, I get distinct bad vibes from the other shoppers and the staff when in this market. Typical haole hatred. Head over to the Ishihara market just down the street, instead. read more

Just to update as of December 2017. This is a disgusting and embarrassing grocery store. The recent 2nd change in ownership has done nothing good. Quality, selection and value are abysmal. Lowered from 2 stars to 1. Buyer beware. Truly a horrible grocery store by any standard. It even smells of roting food and has for years. Also watch for being charged wrong prices. Unavoidable but that's the sad reality. Much worse and more expensive since Washington based owners took over from prior owners the Kawakamis. read more

I was looking into purchasing the poke bowl for my three kids. Poke bowls that come with rice. But first, the guy working the counter laughed that he didn't make rice so poke bowls weren't available. This was only 5pm. I mean, yes I could've made rice at home but we were hoping for poke bowls. And the counter man just laughed to his coworker about NOT making rice. For locals to the area, I'd say this is the most convenient place to get what you need and at decent prices. Not unless you're particular with brand names and such, you can go right on ahead to the nearest KMart, WalMart and/or Costco about 20 miles from there. I'm not complaining about the products. In terms of what IS there, you are met with a selection of sweets when you come in, and to the immediate left is the produce section. They have an array of food and produce items to satisfy your shopping needs. Potted flowers are usually on display near them as well. I don't have to explain much because it's almost parallel to the items at the local Safeway. It's also not the most attractive and appealing place, but I appreciate the cleanliness. Parking: Even on the busiest days, there are still a lot of spaces. Con: It's not exactly open 24 hours - but then again what IS open all day here? Not much. read more

I am forced to check one star. I would rate -5 stars. I accidentally left my ckbook on counter w several hundred dollars in it. I personally know checker. She did not do. But Between person behind me and clerk who received and looked through my ckbook they helped themselves to 200.00. Am thankful got ckbook back but thievery by my own neighbors and local mkt store staff is unacceptable. Shame on management and security much less honesty of their staff. read more

You have to leave a watch with the customer service rep to use the restroom. The lines are very slow, and there was a lot of condensation on the cold items along the back wall (makes you worry about the food safety). I'd suggest going to the Safeway in Lihue instead, if you can make the drive. Otherwise, it works if you're willing to put up with the issues. read more

First, I am a senior. On Mondays when the other Big Saves on the south side have been picked clean by tourists I can come here and find what I want for 5 ,percent off. Good dairy section with great yogurt prices. Nice vegetable section. Lots of treasures in the frozen food section. Cheap postcards. Friendly staff. No hot food section like other Big Saves. They are slow to refill the coffee to go in the mornings. I have been shopping here for 15 months since moving from California and have always felt welcome. Park in the back in the Ace Hardware lot and avoid getting nervous parking and dealing with overflow from MacDonald's. It is an old time supermarket like the Gristedes I remember from Manhattan in the 1970s. Plus lots of ethnic items. read more

Grocery store located 5 minutes away from my parent's house so it's more of a "shop here because it's convenient" thing. It has the basic necessities you'd find at most grocery stores. I do have to say though that they have made improvements over the years. They now have a hot foods section and are slowly starting to sell more products in their store. I went to Big Save looking for something for dessert. Yuck. Its a nasty grocery that is expensive and is primarily there to sell locals staples and visitors booze. I drove down the street to the market at Princeville that was much nicer, but just as expensive. Such is Kauai! read more
