Wow! Wow! Wow! We were visiting family on a Friday during lent. They ordered fish fry dinners for us to dine on. The fish was a generous size, super fresh flaky fish that tastes as if we were in New England. Absolutely loved the coating, it is lightly coated and enhances the fish. Their sides are generous in size. I especially enjoyed the creamy coleslaw. Our meals were take-out and arrived home hot. Wish there was a Bill Gray's in the Capital region...excellent fish! This was my first time ordering online. There are advantages most notably that you can see all the options for cheeseburger toppings such as many choices of cheese. No misunderstandings like when you call in by phone. Prepay and just grab and go when you get notification of your order being ready for pickup. You can still use their online coupons by noting the 4-digit number and entering it at checkout. The burgers and onion rings were the best I've had from BGs. Bill Gray's has gone downhill. They are overpriced, skimpy and inconsistent with their food. The two burgers on my Great Plate the other day were so small, that they would have equaled one burger elsewhere. They also skimped with the fries and toppings. I won't be back. I stopped in here for lunch today and it was a comedy of errors watching the six workers manage to screw up almost every customer's order while I was waiting for my food. My order, however, made it out correctly, and then I got to watch my bagged food sit there and get cold while the staff tried to fix four or five incorrect orders. If you are an assassin and you are contracted to take someone down here, it's Kill Gray's. If the person who hired you will inherit lots of money, then it's "Will (and Testament) Gray's." If you watch a sitcom just before you do the deed, then it's "Will (and Grace) Gray's." And if your shot misses, and you get arrested, and the person lives long and prospers and is still at the restaurant even as we speak, then it's "Still Gray's." This is one of the busiest Bill Gray's I have ever been to. I've now been here 3 times total. Once was awhile back and was just for custard. Once was a few weeks ago and I had a World's Greatest Cheeseburger as usual (which was good, but not the best one I've had from a BG), and some custard, and then the third time was just 5 days ago. The employees here are "medium." In a hurry, a little brisk, but still friendly enough. They score between a 3 and 4. The food is between a 4 and 5. So it averages out to a 4. I'd come back to this location mainly for the custard. I prefer the food at Bill Gray's Henrietta and Bill Gray's Penfield, not to mention the service at both of those locations is excellent. However there is nothing too awful about this Bill Gray's so it scores a solid 4. It's a decent place to come and get your Fill, Gray's. read more

Tap room is huge! The bar section was nice and spacious. The booths are big as well. There is enough room for a pool table on the other side of the room. They did a great job expanding, you can sit wherever you want. And the server will come up to you with popcorn and politely take your order. I love me some Bill Gray's! Their garbage plates are solid and pretty consistent every time. I like the white hots with mac salad and home fries and extra hot sauce. I've tried garbage plates elsewhere and a lot of places i find the hot sauce falls flat and is bland but not here. I like the spiciness and the heat. Lots of flavor, not overpowering. They also have a coupon on their website for two cheeseburgers and an order of fries for 9.99 ....you can't beat that. They have an excellent Burger. It's well seasoned and juicy. I think some of their prices are a little high or a might give them 5 stars but if you're looking for an excellent garbage plate can't go wrong here especially on Tuesday's when they are 6.99! read more

This location is very spacious, more so than the location in Buffalo Road. It does not have outdoor seating here, but you have to be careful of that anyway because of bees. The service was quick and friendly, they were able to seamlessly scan a mobile coupon (2 cheeseburgers and a fry for 9.99, if you order a beverage your total saves you $5). Waiter appeared to be new but I don't blame him as several others walked right by us until I stood up and flagged someone down. Frequent visitor of this establishment. I appreciate the hard work of Wes and Gabby but I can't help to notice the lack of support they receive. On Tuesday's the place becomes packed and every table is full and you can clearly see the two working hard but it kills to see them with little help. It's kinda trash. The only thing good about bill greys now is the meat sauce. Except. They always forget it. So eating a $13 overcooked smushed frozen burger burnt with no meat sauce shows how bad it has gotten. We ordered 4 things. They literally messed up each of those 4 things the last 4x out of 5x we have gone there. The one time they remembered the meat sauce, they didn't put the lid on and wrapped them upside down pouring everywhere and wrapped it up anyway. I saw her do this, mentioned it and she shrugged. Then, she walked away. I never get a manager but yep, I did indeed escalate and mentioned they forget 1 of 2 burgers, 1 mozz sticks, the shake, the marinara sauces and the meat sauces incident and the manager also shrugged. For real?! This for $50 burger meal managerial apathy. This isn't an isolated Incident either. This is the last 5x we have gone there they mess up one to four things each time. So today we took my Mom to Bill Gray's Chili Avenue. I took her cause she likes their burgers; assuming I would not be able to eat a burger with the roll due to my gluten allergy. When I asked for a burger no bun, the woman who took our order was very knowledgeable. She asked if it was an allergy and guided me as to what I could have (toppings on burger) and what I couldn't have. When I went to the counter to pick up the order my burger was in a GF roll. Not only was it a great surprise but they didn't charge me extra which always happens other places. Two men working asked us how we were doing and were interested to know our impressions. Burgers were delicious. Lettuce was fresh. Tomato was ripe and fresh. One of the men held the door for us as we walked out. Really above and beyond. The best Bill Grays experience ever. read more

Bill Gray's is a bit like Nick Tahou's and Wegman's in the sense that everyone in Rochester seems to LOVE these places, but when you go it's sort of a letdown. It also makes you wonder if people around here don't travel much. World's Greatest Cheeseburger? I guess, if you're world includes the area immediately surrounding the nearest Bill Gray's. I tried it finally the other day, and it really isn't anything special. It's better than true fast food (McD's, BK - I'm talking to you!), but nothing to get excited about. It's also a bit overpriced imo or what you're getting. They always have coupons hanging out everywhere you look and make sure you grab one or you're going to walk away feeling like you just robbed. It's a steakburger, kind of small, and it honestly a little dry, and maybe a little rubbery. Again, not horrendous, but they should get rid of that tagline, because it boosts expectations too much relative to what they serve up. The bun tends to overwhelm the burger, the buns are pretty good though - that was the highlight of the trip. Plenty of seating inside, servers were pleasant. Curly fries were okay. read more

This is quite possibly the worst restaurant experience I've ever had in Rochester NY. The best part of the visit was my walk from the front door to the counter and ordering. After that.... it all went down hill. Trying to pick a place to sit, there wasn't a single table that wasn't sticky. Either sticky to the touch or visibly sticky. I was one of 10 people, 3 tables in the restaurant. I don't know what they had to do, but cleaning tables wasn't one of the things. I often come from work where everything I'm touching is communal an I shake lots of hands, I want to be clean when I eat. After washing off a table with a wet napkin I went to wash my hands. The outside of the door to the men's room, shockingly was sticky. I've been in male teen's bedrooms that are less sticky than this Bill Gray's. It was gross. And, stop me if you know where I'm going, everything in the men's room was sticky as well. The sinks, the urinals, mirrors. I'm 99% sure that the only reason the paper towels weren't sticky was because people threw them out when they were done drying their hands. I was afraid to pee, I thought I might get stickier and I didn't want to deal with that mental anguish. I get back to the table, I bring a wet towel to make sure it stays clean. My meal comes (Burger, Sweet Potato Fries, and I ordered a milk shake but it wasn't ready. The burger is good, nice medium, good toppings. The sweet potato fries are under cooked. I go up to the counter to ask for new ones, but the only person apparently working is helping the next couple people in line, and I'm still waiting for my milkshake. I wait, and wait, and wait, about 5 min and when the girl behind the counter is done with the next people in line, my fries are cold and I just want my drink, so I skip the fries and ask about my milkshake. She was in the process of making it when the next guests came in. It's at this point I see 2 workers in the back of the kitchen. They're talking. I go back to my table, try to enjoy cold fries (you can't enjoy cold sweet potato fries, no matter how much honey you have). I'm done with my burger and I've eaten as many fries as I can w/o bringing them up again. 2 Minutes later young girl who apparently does everything here comes over with my milkshake. At this point I'm done with my food. I think she forgot the milk. It was..... well it wasn't good. And normally you can count on Bill Gray's for a milkshake. To top all this off it was $20 for burger, fries, and a milkshake. I think next time I'll take my chances with fast food. Then I'll take the other $12 and save it for my next meal. Couldn't even leave our table and get the bar tenders attention for a drink refill because she was busy chatting. Our waitress disappeared. They were so disorganized they were walking around asking if we were missing a glass of wine. Chicken sandwich came out warm, dry and tough. Service was slow. No check in, no refills no extra beer. I always regret coming to this location. Each time I think it must be a fluke, maybe they are having an "off week". The oil tastes bitter like it never gets changed. They have raised their prices while reducing portion sizes. The chicken tender kids meal used to have two huge tenders. Today's tenders were no longer than my two year old's hand, still only two. The staff at this location is usually pretty friendly and they are pretty fast unless it's super busy... which this location does tend to get pretty busy especially around dinner time. Unfortunately, there have been several occasions when they have gotten orders wrong and there are several items listed on their menu that if you try to order them they tell you that they no longer serve that item... but yet they leave it on the menu. I'm not a huge fan of their hot sauce... too sweet for me. To me, hot sauce is supposed to be spicy and savory, not sweet... but that's just my preference. The rest of their food is really nothing to rave about in my opinion. It's not that the food is bad it's just not as great as some make it out to be... it's average for what you would expect from this type restaurant. As for "world's greatest cheeseburger," again they aren't bad but I've had better. Another problem I have with this particular location is that I've never seen it actually really clean... almost every time I've gone in there I find that almost every service is gritty and sticky and that's a huge turn off for me. First I wanna start by saying WOW!!! My family and I were in tonight at about 7:30 and it was phenomenal. Went about 2 months ago and wasn't to fond of it. But we thought to give it another shot. First thing we noticed when arriving was there is a new managers name on the door. The place was quite busy the manager said it was due some type of "Garbage Plate special". My wife and I were very impressed. Not long wait times at all. We received our order about 7 minutes after placing it and the food was very hot and fresh and tasteful. We went back up after eatin our dinner and got some great Abbotts desert. I got a milkshake that was to die for and my wife got a flying saucer. She enjoyed it so much she snuck up and bought a whole pack of six to bring home. We couldn't resist it giving that everything In the front freezer was looking so delicious. We normally go to the Gates location because it's closer to home but I think it's worth the little further drive to go to Chili were we got hot food, great service, and GREAT desert.
