Don't understand the ringing endorsements for this place. The hostess was friendly, the waitress was impersonal but efficient. The food reminded me of what you get at some catered events, a meh entree with some soggy frozen vegetables. The mashed potatoes were definitely not freshly made either. The crab cakes tasted nothing of crab--more like a vegetable patty with burnt patches, and it didn't come with the tarragon mustard sauce. It was pretty tasteless and DRY. The waitress didn't stop by to see how things were. So I ended up using the honey mustard dressing that was for a salad, and squeezed as much juice out of the two little lemon slices that were a garnish. The shepherds pie wasn't great either. The pretzels were the only good thing. The prices are good, but I would rather pay more for better quality food. Needless to say, won't be giving this place a second chance. read more

The sweet potato fries were fresh and good and everyone else's meals were outstanding according to my group. Seriously service-oriented staff also to add to the colonial tavern ambience which must be mostly original. Owner pays attention to these reviews and I really want to help, down to four stars from 5. Delicious Lamb chop last night, very tasty sauce but someone lost count and added a bunch more salt than needed. Vibrant flavor at first bite but rapidly became cloying. Wife's duck was perfect, filled with subtle flavor. Another downside, easily fixed: the blue cheese dressing was horrible - thin, vinegary for some reason - go buy some institutional/food service sized Marie's or Ken's, both are better than what we had last night. I've been pretty disappointed the last couple times I've been there. The fries are still solid, I still love the pretzels... but my meat was dry both times. The stuffed pork was just so dry that the cheese and bacon couldn't save it, and the German sausage hoagie had grilled dried out pieces of sausage with fried onions (I'm not sure why it was cut in pieces and overcooked instead of just the whole sausage with toppings), and it was just dry and bland. I'm sorry, I have never been to a restaurant in my entire life that puts what tasted like kidney beans or chili on *potato skins*. I bit in and was simultaneously perplexed and disgusted. The corn fritters tasted off, there was a crispy exterior that just didn't seem to work. They have the distinction of serving the heaviest mozzarella sticks I've ever eaten in my life, even my husband only had one of his, and that is saying something. The nachos had what tasted like an overwhelmingly heavy cheese sauce which rendered them inedible. The chicken tenders were overbreaded. The pretzels were too buttery and the accompaniying cheese sauce was too heavy. I barely touched my food and neither did my husband (and he is hardly picky). We will not be returning. read more

I love this place for its unusual variety of foods. You can also get all of your comfort foods as well. The chef is great. They serve warm pretzels before your meal. Took the family to Bill's for the first time. We had the Bill's sampler to begin our meal. The corn nuggets and potato skins were my favorite. The chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks were just ok. They brought out complimentary hot pretzels which were great. I had the flank steak with mashed potatoes. I was surprised by the fact that my meal was barely warm, truly disappointing. My daughter had the buffalo wings which did not have enough sauce, too dry. Buffalo wings are meant to be messy. My wife's shepherd's pie lacked flavor. I really wanted to like this spot, considering I live two minutes away. Sorry Bill's, don't think we would go back. I will add that the waitress was great! read more

Heard great things... my friend from Canada was visiting me for the new year, and I decided to treat him to dinner at this supposed excellent, historic spot. Made reservations as requested when I called for NYE. Drove over an hour. Arrived just behind a party of four to find a sign reading 'Seat yourself', which we did. Had to retrieve our own menus. Sat at a back table by a fireplace; was told 15 minutes later by a waitress, who clearly wanted to be anywhere but there, to move as 'that section was closed.' We moved one table over, about 3 feet. The table was sticky, the utensils and napkins were dropped in the middle of the table about 5 minutes later. The same waitress took orders from the party of four in front of us, then took our drink and appetizer order. Orders (panko pickles and deviled eggs, not panko, not fresh, not recommended...) were brought out timely, dinner orders were placed. The waitress then came back to our table with 'bad news'. She neglected to put our dinner ticket in in time, and the kitchen was now closed. We would not be served dinner. She then left and returned with the food order for the party of four. We called her over to discuss this, that the kitchen was clearly open as she had brought out the other party's food, and that patrons at the bar were being served food. She just restated that the kitchen was closed, uncaring. Presented with the bill: $33 for one sliced dill pickle, two eggs and two sodas. Sorry so long, but in summary: AVOID! Definitely a must-go-to! My boyfriend has eaten here several times and never had anything bad to say about it. So when it came time to throw is surprise 30th birthday party, this was the perfect place! I was in communications with the owner throughout the process, he was prompt with getting back to me and super helpful! The staff on the day of was AWESOME, we couldn't have had a better time! EVERYONE who attended raved about how wonderful the food is! We have been back since, and will continue to keep going. Have plans to visit this weekend with friends! Great place to go at any time of the day. I love the unique dinner specials. Service is unbeatable. Every time I drive by, It saddens me to see how rundown this historic landmark has become. Why would I bother going in again, when the same broken windows upstairs can be see from the street. Caution tape adorns the front porch along with a hastily constructed fix-up for the failing roof front. When your outside looks like that ....it makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like. This bar is definitely the best you will find in Hamilton. They have great live music and an even better patio area for the warmer months. The bouncers are super nice but also very on top of things. If you're getting food, the boneless wings were really good! The bar staff have been great almost every time I've been, especially Melissa, she's always smiling and very attentive. The only time I had any issue was with the younger male bartender who probably has the worst attitude I've ever seen as a bartender and is the only reason I am not giving 5 stars. He only paid attention to his friends and ignored everyone else. When he finally did come over he was extremely rude and arrogant. Other people that were there said he is always like that and gets away with it bc he is family to the owner and it's best to sit downstairs bc he usually works the upper bar area. Worst customer service I've ever seen I've been a waitress for years and it's insane how they treat customers at this place

We moved to the Hamilton area about a year and a half ago and have dined at Bills probably a handful of times during our time here. Unfortunately, there is one flaw that has ruined our experience two of the last three visits there...the hostess or host. The two times that I refer to include arriving to the restaurant with the host or hostess not at the front podium for at least 10 minutes. With our visit today, I had to go into the restaurant and ask to find the hostess, the waiter curtly told me to be patient and they will come up to the front soon. She did arrive, without apology, then told us she might have a table for us soon. When I went inside, I saw quite a few tables free. We waited another ten minutes and just left due to being ignored or treated with the same patience that we were trying to show. The food and the ambiance is very good, sorry to say that this being the second time that the front person went MIA for some time, may force us to seek out more alternatives in the area. read more

Went there on Friday night at around 11pm. They have an outdoor tent for "social distancing", but people were packed like sardines inside the tent. There were so many people in the tent, the crowd began to spill outside of it, and into the parking lot area. They were still taking drink orders from the people standing outside. They were serving patrons who were standing inside the tent, when they are only allowed to serve people seated at a table. They were well over their pre-covid capacity, let alone what should have been allowed with covid rules for bars. There was a group of people who seemed to know the bartenders, so they were allowed to sit indoors at the indoor bar area to have their drinks. Completely unprofessional, not to mention illegal. When I took pictures documenting all of this, I was threatened and told to leave. It's a shame they don't care about public health. I've been to trashy dive bars that exercised better caution than this place. read more

Honestly what ruined the whole experience was the bartender. It was way too much attitude. She took the drink order of half our group and then left. It took about 15 minutes for me to finally order my drink. We actually asked someone else walking past if she could help but she just said that the bartender needed to help us and didn't attempt to get her attention for us. As soon as I finally managed to order my drink she wanted the cash right away and didn't ask if I wanted to open a tab (we were there for awhile) and then brought me a mediocre drink and huffed when I asked for water. My entire group was getting annoyed and it's not like they were at all busy. We also ordered "truffle fries" and they just tasted like dry burnt fries. The bathroom is tiny, there is only one stall in there and the lock is broken. When I went to use the bathroom the bartender was in there putting on makeup. When I left my friends were waiting to pay for their second round of drinks and we had to wait another ten minutes until we could leave. read more

Terrible! Our visit was our first one due to a Groupon offer. We arrived around 5:30 & were seated promptly with no wait. There were 3 tables seated around us & a dozen empty tables. Our waitress was young, dressed appropriately & friendly. She did not explain the menu nor did she advise us of the daily specials. It took a while to decide what we were going to eat & the waitress came back a couple times. We ordered the Panko Fried Pickles & the Ultimate Nachos for appetizers. My friend got the Bill's Chicken sandwich & I ordered the 50/50 burger but was told they were out so I had to make another choice & chose the Fish and Chips because it had a "thumbs up" icon next to them leading me to believe it was one of their specialties. I was a bit annoyed that the waitress did not start out by advising us that a few of the daily specials had run out & that after I had chosen a daily special that was not offered because they were out, I had to revert back to the menu to make another choice. She was able to take our order & was able to accommodate & remember any special requests without having to remind her. The food came out fairly quickly. The fried pickles: There were 4 quarters and were heavily breaded & fried to the point that the breading was a dark brown & the pickles turned to mush. I took one bite and the hot slimey pickle slid out of the overfried crust and burned my lips & chin. I had to spit it out instantly to avoid burning my chin & lips further. My dining guest suggested I cut them up and eat them with a fork... Still not an easy task, the breading crumbled, the pickle was mush. I always thought fried pickles were supposed to be crisp cold pickles lightly breaded and fried quickly to maintain the crispiness. The Ultimate nachos portion was small, they were served on a Fajita iron drenched in salsa, beans, chili, sour cream, jalapeño peppers and black olives. The whole mass pile was put in the oven and baked to a point that the chips turned a dark brown and had a burned taste to them. There was so much stuff on them that the chips were soggy and the flavors were overdone. The Bill's Chicken sandwich was average. A bit chewy and tasted like a frozen patty fried to order. Bacon was thick and tough. It had an eerie familiar taste like a chicken sandwich at a fast food restaurant. Hard to explain, It was edible but nothing to write home about. The garden salad that came with the fish and chips was VERY cold - I do not think I have ever had a salad that was so cold it hurt my teeth chewing it. It was tasty and was crisp but it was obviously made in advance and chilled in an ice box. The Fish and Chips were the final straw that ruined the meal. The fries were soft and limpy, like they were made an hour ago and kept under a heat lamp . They were not crispy and they were a bit overdone. The fish - two small portions of Cod were lightly breaded and over fried to the point that my fork would not pierce the crust. I tried one bite and my teeth could not break the crust so I used a knife and still struggled to get a piece off and into my mouth. I chewed and chewed and chewed and realized after a minute of chewing, nothing was happening but an unpleasant experience of overcooked dry chewy fish so I spit it out and pushed the plate aside. It was totally inedible. The waitress came by about 5 or 10 minutes after we were served and asked how we were doing and I told her that I was quite disappointed with everything from the pickles, the nachos to the fish. She did offer that they would make something else but I declined, stating I had lost my appetite. She apologized and removed my Fish and Chips plate that I had only taken a bite out of. She apologized and said they had a new chef that was still trying to get adjusted. She did come back afterwards and said the chef offered a complimentary dessert to which we declined. So she promptly dropped the bill on the table and sprinted away as fast as she could as if she was expecting an explosion from us. Well, when we saw the bill, we were quite insulted to see that they had charged me for the fish that I returned to the kitchen. The waitress passed by our table twice avoiding eye contact with us for the next 5 or 10 minutes and we could not get her attention so I had to get up out of my seat and walk over to the waitress station where she was chatting with another waitress to discuss the fish and chips she had charged me for. I told her I was quite insulted that they charged me for the inedible fish dinner that I only took one bite out of. She was speechless and shocked with no answers. I got the feeling the management told her to charge us for it anyways and she did not agree. In a moment of frustration, she just blurted out "then don't pay it" "Just leave then". That made me feel even more uncomfortable & a bad impression. I was really hoping the manager would come by as a gesture of good will but no sign of him/her.
