I am not from Portland and I had been referred by another mechanic that I didn't know, so I knew I was rolling the dice. At first it seemed like he wouldnt be able to help us on the day, so we were looking at a hotel, but Bill helped us get a cheap rental car from Enterprise and within three hours, adjusted a couple carb houses and found a voltage drop that had been giving me fits. Great turnaround time! It was Friday morning, and I had to work at 4. I was in a pinch, and calling around everywhere I could to get my car looked at. Bill's was the only place that had a slot for me. They took it in, figured out what was wrong with it from my vague description, fixed it, and had me off to work by 3:30. They fixed issues I had had with other repairs, and topped off my oil too. The only gripe I have is that I didn't authorize the oil, which I was charged for since I hadn't had my oil changed there. As far as price goes, I've been through a few mechanics in the past couple years, and these guys are either the lowest, or second-to. Call me a customer. read more

I have had VWs all my life, and until a move to Las Vegas always relied on non-dealer mechanics. I never found one in Vegas, but after moving to Portland I asked around and Bill's was recommended to me by another VW owner. This was for my 50,000 mile check but I also wanted them to look at my upper strut mounts and bearings (since the dealer told me there was a problem and I needed a $550 repair job). Turns out that this was a bogus claim so the repair was not needed. Thanks, Bill. Also, the cost for the 50,000 standard service was reasonable and, of course, less than the dealer would have charged for that routine service. I highly recommend Bill's for VW owners (and those with other cars as well). It is great to once again find a local honest place to get my VW worked on. OH - one more thing. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the coffee shop, but if you are going to wait, just walk to the 6500 block of SE Foster and there is a cool coffee shop on the side of the street opposite from the side where Bill's is (with wifi). read more

They expeditiously diagnosed a peculiar malfunction I was experiencing with my car windows- they had the necessary components shipped to the shop from two different states (which only took a couple of days), and installed the parts in a matter of minutes once they arrived. The only reason I'm giving them two stars instead of one is that they're occasionally very good. Normally, they cost a lot, take forever, and aren't remotely thorough. I paid $100 for a comprehensive inspection after I bought a car, and they missed just about every problem I've found since then. They didn't even notice that one of the power windows didn't work right. When I had a tuneup, it "un-tuned" over the next six weeks. They mostly just raised my idle to cover up other problems, and charged me $150 to change spark plugs and cables. The cables were so bad that the boots pulled off of every single plug the next time I unplugged them. I can't figure these guys out. The owner seems to know cars pretty well, but the end result is just lousy. It's a gamble if you go. I'd give it 1/3 odds that you get great service, 1/3 that you get so-so, and 1/3 that you get really screwed like I did the last time I went. I'd like to give them just one star, but I have had a few genuinely good experiences with them. I'd especially stay away if you're not familiar enough with car tech to speak with them technically. They'll work with you real nicely, but you'll get screwed without even knowing it. read more

Beware of this shop. Repairs always take days, not hours. Craig, the guy in charge, makes stuff up as he goes along and works really hard to screw you over sufficiently. Even simple repairs here end up costing 3 times what seems reasonable. read more

Once again Bill's took great care of my F250 diesel. At 190k, he keeps it running as a solid vehicle for far less than the monthly payment on a new one. If you have an old car, this is the place to bring it. I have a 1998 Honda CRV, and had some problem with remote key door opener. I first took it to Beaverton Honda, and they replaced driver side door and found out that the wiring harness is broken, but the factory does not sell these parts any more, so they need to manufacture it and it will take at least $3,000. So I took Honda CRV to Bill's Quality Automotive, and they fixed all the electrical problems for just $360 in two days. They did not purchase or manufacture wiring harness. I am sure Bill doesn't need my endorsement, but i feel like people should know how great my experience has been with Bill. First, we've been going to Bill's, off and on, for around 10years. I say off and on because when we take a car in, he fixes it right the first time. Never had to bring anything in twice for the same issue. We've own a few used cars over the years and of course the used car problems that come with them. We've brought our Jetta and our Element to Bill and he's always been very thorough, straight forward, fair and even with my pretty good understanding of automotive repair and maintenance, Bill has been great with educating us. Case in point. The first car my wife and I purchased 13 years ago was a 1989 Jeep Grandwagoneer. I know, I know. It is pretty sweet. We started off taking it to a place out in Tualitan to get work done because the previous owner had taken it there and knew the car. We finally gave up on those guys after a few years and brought her to Bill. He had her purring like never before. Dreams of her restoration was on the horizon, then life (literally) stepped in. The Kids came and driving car that gets 9 - 12 MPG wasn't gonna work for the family. So the Jeep was garaged, only to be revived for a weekend, here and there. We broke her out recently (after 3 years of siting) until we get our next car. Bill, gave her a once over as he did the much needed oil/fluid/grease change. The V8 was once again on the road. Bill, helpful as always, provided a verbal report card, pointed out suggestions and adjusted the carburetor. We own much newer, low maintenance cars now and i am sure he can do these oil changes in his sleep. I really cant say enough about the quality and care that I received from Bill. This was my second time in and was no different from the first time. I was given excellent customer service, a reasonable quote and speedy service. I brought my 95 bronco in on Friday for 3 things; the door would not open from the inside, the back window was not working and steering issues. I knew they would not get to it until Monday so I wasn't worried. On schedule Bill called to tell me what the issue with the door and window were and got right to them. On Tuesday I got the call about the steering issues and was told it would be done by Wednesday. He wanted to get it back to me on Tuesday but they were waiting on parts. He felt so bad that he arranged to pick me up from work at my convenience. I picked up my rig and I have to say that it has never driven so well. These guys have plausibly saved me more money than I've spent at their shop. I live in Vancouver, so its a hassle to drive down to their shop, but its well worth it. How valuable is it to have a mechanic you can truly trust; trust their honesty, trust their ability and skill. Repeatedly I'd had a dealership or other shop tell me I needed to spend a fortune on repairs. They don't hesitate to tell me when I don't need to spend, by just doing a simple service instead that resolved my problem, given me an honest prioritization of what was important, and what was optional or less immediate, or like today, an alignment shop in Vancouver told me I needed $1K in repairs, and they discovered the diagnosis was complete BS, and even got a 2nd opinion confirming it with their own alignment shop. I've know these guys for a long time, and they are as straight shooters as you could ever dream finding, and when a repair really does need to be done, their work is absolutely excellent quality. My only hesitation recommending them is that everyone will learn what I already know, that Bill's is a GD diamond of a find. read more

Had the radiator replaced in my Subaru and 2 weeks later, I'm broke down on I-5 because they didn't mention the radiator hoses were bad. No, not a word they just put the thing back together instead of telling me they were bad and giving me the opportunity to replace them so my car was reliably repaired. I think they thought I would be back for another round of labor charges to replace the hoses. Bite me! I'm a girl but not a dumb girl!
