I am a huge fan of Billy's chowder house. Every time I go there, I get their delicious clam chowder and gobble it right up. My only complaint is that in the clam chowder, there is more potato than there is anything else. I am very sorry I wasted my money! The food was awful and I really wasn't sure what I was eating when I bit into the Baked Haddock Sandwich. It was like someone put a piece od haddock in a fryer without breaking and cooked it dry and slapped it on a bun. Lobster stew was just ok but overpriced and scallops wrapped in bacon were chewy! Cute place. Much bigger inside than it looks like from the outside! It was packed when I went with my friends. Note: the Lobster Mac is delicious and huge! Came here as a kid and always have loved it. This place is one of the reasons I love seafood. It's good food, right near the ocean, with good service, and a decent price. What more do you need? Unreal clam chowder, not thick and lumpy like a lot of chowders out there, this is buttery and delicious. I love the lobster rolls and fried clams as well. Parking can be a pain as part of the parking lot is used for valet. Valet is optional, I personally have never used it. They have a pretty good rum punch buckets which are fun and great happy hour deals. Located right on the marsh there are great views, incredible views of sunsets. Walking distance from a few different hotels and also within walking distance to the beach. I have come here many summers and have never been disappointed. I had heard some pretty good things about this place and so after a morning of fishing we ventured in expecting something good. What we encountered was service that was kind of slow and food that at best was a 3 out of 5. Price wasn't too bad for a small lobster as they had some special going, but definitely not a must visit as I had been told. Looks out on the flood plains not much to look at if you can see. The former owner I was later told opened a new place on the Wells harbor. Would be more inclined to visit that place than this place again. read more

Had a great time! First time in Maine and was looking for a nice no frills lobster spot after a grueling drive from Niagara Falls. Luckily this place was open a little later and we were able to not have to wait till the next day. It was perfect I got the twin lobster special and was very pleased how perfect everything tasted. Excellent food, atmosphere, and view. We were here at 5:30 on a Wednesday evening in mid-September. When we arrived they said it would be a 10 min wait but we'd just moved to the waiting area when they called out name, maybe a two min wait. Our waitress was very busy but always stopped by when we needed her. The food was excellent. The lobster Mac and Cheese was very flavorful and filled with lobster. The surf and turf was good as well. The shrimp we buttery and perfectly cooked. The filet was a bit salty and not quite as tender as I'd expect a glut to be but was still good overall. We ordered dessert, a piece of blueberry pie with ice cream and a blueberry shortcake sundae. They were able to package them to go for and we ate them looking out at the ice. Both were very good, 100% would order again. When we left around 6:30 the place was totally packed and lots of people were waiting. About 7:15 we drove back by, after dessert on the beach, and noticed the parking lot had more open spots and no one was waiting outside anymore. Great place, will be dining here again. read more

We must have caught Billy's on a bad night. Our party of 2 was seated quickly, but at a table 3 feet away from the barstools/bar. Very noisy. Husband got fish and chips and 3 oysters (they were $1 each as told by our server). I got fried clams (can't get fried clams in California). I was very excited. I got scallops as well. The scallops were delicious, but the clams were terrible - muddy tasting. I think I would have preferred a bit of sand in them. Server forgot the order of oysters, and when reminded acted as if she didn't believe we'd ordered them. When she confirmed we had, we told her never mind as we were almost done with our dinners. It was extremely expensive, and we were extremely disappointed. We won't go back. read more

Arrived on a Thursday afternoon around 4:30, scored a seat at the bar and about 20 minutes later a second seat for my husband. Bar staff attentive and efficient. Ordered onion rings and haddock bites. I asked to substitute lemon wedges for the tartar sauce with the haddock bites and cheerfully received an ample amount of lemons. My new favorite place in southern Maine! Went there because my wife remembered us eating there 25 years ago. I didn't. So I wasn't really into it, but after we looked at menu, I said ok, looks interesting. BEST Maine style clam chowder EVER! Onion rings perfectly cut, breaded, AND cooked! Wife ate her baked stuffed lobster. ALL of it! She never eats all of anything we get! And it was big! I had a fried clam/shrimp plate that was everything it should be! So much better than the same thing I had the nite before at that famous Diner on US1 just up the street. More food at about the same $$$, and I got the medium size. Then our awesome waitress Jessie brought me the most fantastic blueberry shortcake sundae for dessert! Yes, I was much happier leaving than when I went in! Spotted the Billy's Chowder House sign out on the main road and took a chance. We were looking for a fried food place that was on the water. Bingo. Got seated right away by a really pleasant man, waitress came right over. We had the lobster roll with melted butter, onion rings, fried whole belly clams with fried shrimp. All perfect. The batter was golden brown and delicious. Sides were fries and cole slaw. Both were great. Friendly, clean, great food. Being from Boston we loved the decor. Bruins, Celts, Sox and Pats! My family has been coming to BIlly's for decades. We live in Western Massachusetts and many times have driven to Maine just for the day after craving a Billy's lobster roll. It saddens me to have to say anything negative about this long-time establishment but... They have cut back considerably on the size of their "large" lobster roll over the years. Yesterday was the tipping point for this review. They have changed their roll to a very hardy roll instead of the light weight hot dog style roll. We're guessing the reasoning is that they have cut down so drastically on the amount of lobster in the roll that they're trying to make up for it with more bread. The price for a large lobster roll is $36.99. We get the fact that the price of lobster is high. However, to pay that price for such a small portion of lobster, fries and a pickle is over the top.
