Billy Combo - Waffle, Over Easy Eggs and 1/2 Ham Add 1 Egg and English Muffin
    Keaton S.

Went here for brunch with my grandma at her recommendation. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It had a small town diner vibe and it was amazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The server was friendly and got our order in and brought the food out incredibly fast. Everything was clearly homemade. The waffle was fluffy and slightly sweet but not too much. Definitely not a hotel waffle. The eggs were incredibly dunky but did need some seasoning. English muffin was exactly what you expect with an English muffin

Great food, service, and fair prices. This is the spot to get a good breakfast in Gretna. Can see coming back next time we're in the area.

Billy's Cafe was just ok. I wanted it to be so much better especially because I am a small town girl who sometimes just wants a little small town cooking and friendliness but that is not what greeted us at Billy's Cafe. It doesn't help that the options in Gretna are slim to none but given it's proximity to Omaha I guess it's understandable. The food was ok. Our table of four adults and two kids had a mix of tenderloins and fish and chips. I was impressed that the tenderloin was actually a tenderloin and not a pork fritter but as far as flavor and size it was bland and average. Nothing out of this world, but not inedible either. The meal was simple, no bells and whistles, which was just fine. We were just hungry and wanted something tasty and familiar. We showed up closer to 2 on Saturday, which is close to closing time and our welcome was well, not very welcome. The waitress eventually warmed up to us but I'd already gotten a bad taste in my mouth while we waited for her to take our order. There was also very little ambiance. I mean it looks like they tried with all the nostalgic decor and the racing gear and matching coffee cups but it was painfully quiet, the old vinyl seats were cracked, the tables had seen better days and while we waited to be served, my three year old niece had a meltdown (of her own accord, nothing to do with the place). I'm used to these but given the super super quiet space, it was just a little bit harder to bare. Playing some music could have helped tremendously. Just a note to anyone who does choose to come here - it is cash only. I won't be back.

Food comes fast and is exceptional. Beware of the flatware and cups. They look dirty but are just old and stained.

We started with the biscuits, which came out hot and fresh. These were so delicious and buttery, and the peach and blueberry jam took them to the next level. My husband and I both had the mountain morning bowl. To me, this is a perfect breakfast! Goat cheese grits, crispy potatoes, egg, a little spice...YUM. The other members of our party also loved their meals. I can't wait to come back and try more!

Ok the other hand, the service is rather iffy & unpredictable. The chicken & waffles is my go-to for each visit, and they have many types of delicious sides to choose from, with my favorites being the biscuits & berries, goat cheese grits, and also the fried green tomatoes. I have zero problems with the food that they serve here, they always do an excellent job at preparing whatever they need to prepare & the portions are always satisfactory. As for the service, there are days where you will receive perfect service while on others the service is not so great. Some days you will be attended to in a timely manner, while there is other days where there isn't anyone available or willing to seat you somewhere. I've also experienced instances where they didn't attend to our table to take orders until I made a complaint. Most of these instances were during days where the place was virtually empty so it's not because of the place being busy. I've also ordered take out from here before, again some instances are perfect and there's other instances where they don't tell you if a certain food is out of stock via text or call so if you ordered something that isn't in stock, you're forced to wait for them to prepare something else once you arrive to pick up your order. They also don't always include syrup or butter in the takeout bags for chicken & waffles. One minor thing I'm also disappointed about is how the portion of grits has lessened over time, going from being served in a bowl to instead being served in a small cup/mug. Overall, I certainly don't return for the service because you never really know if it's going to be a good day or a bad day for that. It's always the food that brings me back. I do want to like this place, and I do to an extent but again the service is always unpredictable. I'd still say the food is worth coming here to see how it goes.

This place taught me a thing or two about vegetables, which delighted all of our senses, and I highly recommend trying a variety of their small plates. This is worth a few minute detour. If you live here, well then, lucky you! Our servers carefully detailed the menu and let us taste a new wine prior to ordering. The dinner service manager is knowledgeable and passionate about the dining experience. When we ordered the radicchio salad, I was skeptical that it would be bitter, but was curious to try it. My husband and I could have fought over it--it was that good! The cauliflower was roasted perfectly, and sat upon a sweet and spice infused puree called mahummara with crunchy pine nuts. The complexity of spices compelled us to try another bite, and then another... Roasted carrots are tender and sweet. Paired with cool yogurt and chili crunch, they ascend into another level of deliciousness. A tear of fresh bread across bits of remaining sauce, and then (not a minute sooner) "we are satiated, thank you!" and the server can take the plate. The restaurant is adjacent to a theater that shows unique offerings and they will sometimes coordinate events with menus. We liked the simple cafe style tables and openness. Before Covid timber's restaurant was the best. They had a great buffet, and their meals, even though expensive were worth it. My family and I and our adult kids all went over July 4 weekend. We had a terrific time except for the Timber's restaurant. The food was terrible.. there were 12 of us, and although the service was five stars, we couldn't believe the quality of the food. Not one of us had a good meal, which I know seems hard to believe. I will give one example... Two eggs, potatoes, and bacon. $22. We asked for the eggs over medium and they came over hard. They apologized and brought us two more eggs, both over hard again. Should be simple to make eggs... And why $22? At dinner a couple of my boys ordered steaks medium rare. They were delivered medium well... both of their steaks were overcooked. It was $35 for a piece of meat that was overcooked and the sides were extra. For what they charge at Timbers, you would think you were getting a great meal, but that's not the case. We couldn't eat our deviled eggs; it tasted like an ingredient had expired? We never return food, but we had to send this back. I'm not sure what happened, but five years ago, the restaurant was great. Now it is honestly terrible and overpriced. Timber's, seriously, you need to look at your menu, hire better cooks, and charge a fair price. The Lied Lodge is so great and your staff is terrific, but your restaurant can be better.
