Definitely cash only (there's an ATM oddly placed in the middle of the restaurant). Definitely a place that serves breakfast. I ordered an all meat omelette with toast and hash browns. The food was decent, needed seasonings (but nothing some salt and pepper couldn't fix). The service was pretty good, even though it was pretty crowded. Overall 3 out 5. This is the first time we have ever had biscuits and gravy that the gravy was bright white, totally meatless, and totally bland and tasteless. Of the three of us that ordered biscuits and gravy we were all totally amazed at how bad they were and none of us ate more than a couple bites. The small sausage links, hash browns and small fried eggs were ok, but average at best. Then when you add cash only, no credit cards you really wish you hadn't stopped to eat there. Billy's Cafe was just ok. I wanted it to be so much better especially because I am a small town girl who sometimes just wants a little small town cooking and friendliness but that is not what greeted us at Billy's Cafe. It doesn't help that the options in Gretna are slim to none but given it's proximity to Omaha I guess it's understandable. The food was ok. Our table of four adults and two kids had a mix of tenderloins and fish and chips. I was impressed that the tenderloin was actually a tenderloin and not a pork fritter but as far as flavor and size it was bland and average. Nothing out of this world, but not inedible either. The meal was simple, no bells and whistles, which was just fine. We were just hungry and wanted something tasty and familiar. We showed up closer to 2 on Saturday, which is close to closing time and our welcome was well, not very welcome. The waitress eventually warmed up to us but I'd already gotten a bad taste in my mouth while we waited for her to take our order. There was also very little ambiance. I mean it looks like they tried with all the nostalgic decor and the racing gear and matching coffee cups but it was painfully quiet, the old vinyl seats were cracked, the tables had seen better days and while we waited to be served, my three year old niece had a meltdown (of her own accord, nothing to do with the place). I'm used to these but given the super super quiet space, it was just a little bit harder to bare. Playing some music could have helped tremendously. Just a note to anyone who does choose to come here - it is cash only. I won't be back. read more

Billy's Gretna Cafe has been one of our favorites for breakfast food for many years. However, the past two visits have been down right terrible. This morning I ordered the French toast and two eggs over easy. My husband ordered scrambled eggs, pancakes and bacon. Both orders arrived at our table and while they "looked" appealing, they were far from it. Everything was cold to the touch. We should have sent it back I suppose, but we were starving and our waitress wasn't in the best of moods to begin with. We were never asked if we wanted a coffee or a water refill and we actually never saw her again until the bill came. Here's hoping maybe these were just one-offs and things get better so we can try again soon! read more

The food is always good, but the best part about Billy's is the people. The service is always friendly and there is a feeling of being at home with family when you are there. Make sure you have cash though. They don't take cards. I think they have an ATM there, and there is a First National ATM next door. Some people might be annoyed, but I get it. We love it when wanting the traditional breakfast staples & they do a great job keeping your coffee cup warm/full. Kids are always excited to go here. Stopped in for some vittles after reading reviews on google. I had the biscuits and gravy while my wife had a patty melt with fries. I'll say that the menu did say biscuits and gravy, there was barely any sausage in the gravy. I imagine the gravy wAs store bought as it sure didn't appear home made. Billy's is an excellent hometown diner kind of joint. There are a few rough edges but overall a perfect hometown joint. I don't expect or want the spit-and-polish of a big chain with tons of business and money. It is clean, well cared for, and just what I expect of a homey diner. I have been several time and received friendly excellent service. It is not always the fastest at peak times but it's hard to staff servers for the peak and expect them to stand around when not peak - no money in serving when it's slow. Also not worth coming in for 2 hours of work - can't even pay for gas to get there that way. I always get breakfast which they know how to cook. Eggs are right, meat cooked well and not dried out, and they have the best pancake around (that or toast with breakfast plate). I recommend this diner with no reservations but don't expect a super polished high end diner such as Buckhead Diner in Atlanta. read more
