I want to give this place 5 stars....... This may be he best burger I have had in Austin so far (I've only lived here 6 months), and the fries were awesome! Will I be coming back here? Yes! If you like really great cheeseburgers, then this is the place to go, and its easy on your wallet. So why not the 5 star review? I was a little bugged by the bartender/order taker. First, the tables were filthy.... and he wasn't too busy, but the wet rag stayed over his shoulder the entire time. Also, he seemed really annoyed with me when I didn't tip him, and he gave me the "stink" eye the entire time. Am I missing something? Do I have to tip someone for taking my order? I didn't order a drink, just a burger.... He didn't bring it to me, he didn't clean my table. He typed it into the machine, and called my name when it was ready..... how exactly does that warrant a tip? Oh, well...... Sometimes I think our "tipping" society is out of control. We have to tip everyone now! The airport guys, the car wash people, hair dressers, bartenders, waiters, bell hops..... where does it end? People 'expect" tips.... I think tips should be earned, if people were earning tips instead of "expecting" tips we would have much better service. And YES, I was a former waiter! I worked hard for those tips! It was an overcast evening. I liked the burger here. It was good. I got very involved with it. It wasn't casual like wham-bam-thank-you-burger. It was like, let's plan a second date, or do you want to meet my friends, or what's your blood type? That's pretty involved. I was so involved that I was sitting outside and didn't even notice the tow truck take my car away from across the street just 20 yards behind me. Did I mention I had a pitcher of Fireman's 4? I'm on a mission to review the best places to take dogs (IMHO), and so I of course need to review Billy's. To echo what everyone else has said, Billy's is great, all around good food, and a killer, relaxed, pub atmosphere (someone once asked me if it was britsh or american pub...I guess american? not sure). I think the thing I like best about it, in addition to the fact that I can take my dogs there, is that there is very little on the menu that is neglected and the food is well above bar food average. Their veggie options are great: the veggie philly is one of the best vegeterian sandwiches I've had,and can easily be made vegan with the removal of cheese. Their vegan chili is really good too. Billy's veggies are fresh, and good, and when you get a salad you don't get a half a head of iceberg and a tomato that doesn't even deserve to be garnish: you get mixed greens, fresh tomatoes, and even a couple healthy looking black olives. My only complaint is that the fries are occasionally just mediocre. But they are usually pretty darn good, like everything else here. Particularly great spot for happy hour with friends.... It rates third on my list of dog places. read more

Came over here with friends last night, since it's just around the corner from their house. Honestly, the wings were about a 2 star experience for me. If you like saucy wings as I do, i would avoid them. The XXX wings were just to dry for me to really enjoy or order again. I also thought they were rather tiny. Now unlike my pal Gary K, I really liked the fries. The seasoning was excellent. The fried pickles spears were also tasty. Why am I giving 4 stars if I didn't like the wings? It's all about atmosphere. It's a very comfortable place to sit around with friends and chat and have a pitcher of beer or two or three. And I saw the burgers up close. I always look for the stand-outs in restaurants and obviously at Billy's it's the burgers. I just wasn't in much of a burger mood last night. They have an interesting system of ordering at the bar cash register. The line never got too long though. And we quickly got our Dos XX refill. The bartender was very friendly and on top of her game. Parking is difficult at peak times. We parked across the street. It's nice that Billy's has signs posted absolutely everywhere telling customers where NOT to park to avoid a tow. I carefully read the reviews already written to see if anyone had mentioned the following observation. No one has. So here goes: The Fries are Lethal. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the fries here, they're incredibly seasoned, but they do serious damage on my body. For the next 3 days, I'm puffy from the fries. My eyes are puffy for daaaaays. I have gone without fries, and just had a burger, and did not have this problem. It is the fries. Lots o' sodium. My solution? I did this once, and will continue -- I just ask for a half-order of fries. The burgers are quite big, and I'm drinking beer, so I don't really *need* a whole order of fries. It cuts down on the puffiness considerably. GRILL CLOSES AT 11.30p. PARKING: I park on Lynnwood, off of Hancock, just a quick walk down. I love, love, love this place. Love it. read more

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do something special for my 100th review, but special isn't my thing anyway. You know what is? Weird? Yes. Creepy? Duh. Special? Not my style, bro. So, reviewing Billy's while at Billy's seems a bit weird, and that's what I'm going to do. Rebecca is bartending right now and she's obviously awesome. I don't trust the guy with the ponytail in the north face jacket that just walked in, but I do enjoy the dude with the epic beard and black chuck taylors. Now that we've gotten the creepy part out of the way, I'll start writing a review of the bar or whatever. I like Billy's. I like it a lot. I mostly come here on Wednesdays for Geeks Who Drink (because duh), but I've been on a few random nights to have a Sputnik, beat a dude at pool, and have an awkward OKCupid meetup. While not all of the situations were ideal, the bar certainly was. They have a great beer selection (Sputnik, hellooooooo) and they have a lot of food that can be veganized. Granted, the only thing I ever get is the veggie frito pie sans cheese, but I'm sure the other veganizable things are just as tasty. I look forward to Wednesdays because it means I get a veggie frito pie. Guess what I'm eating RIGHT NOW? No seriously, I am eating the veggie frito pie right now. They have a lovely patio area with a bunch of picnic tables, which I'm kind of about. They have lots of TVs for watching the sportsin', and they've even been nice enough to put on an Iowa State game so I could watch my Cyclones crush someone at basketball (omg we're so good this season). And the best part of all of this? It's so darn cheap! I love my neighborhood bar, and I like to think they love me, too. The less good things about Billy's: -There's not much parking, which I guess sucks for some people (bicycles are for lovers). There is plenty of parking on side streets, so don't park in subway else you'll get towed, son. -Kids have been here at like 9 p.m. on a Friday night. This is less than ideal. Some 13 year olds were hogging the pool table for hours on a Friday night. Don't they have malls to loiter in or something? *grumble* -They have a note on one of their arcade games that says PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK. I'm not normally one to play arcade games, but I love a good risk. This risk-taking behavior has cost me MULTIPLE dollars. But really, go to Billy's. Get some veggie food because your body loves you more for that. Also, beer. Just know that if you come here to play on a Wednesday, my team will crush you. WITH LOVE. read more

I so miss living within bike riding distance of this place; as, I have many fond memories here. Great place for hanging out with friends outside on the patio (yes they are butt sniffer (dog) friendly) over drinks or inside playing old school arcade, pool or darts. And yeah they have some good food. I can highly recommend the fried stuff here: okra, pickles and fried green tomatoes. Don't forget to try these 3 things. I'm apparently the last one in town to discover Billy's, but I intend to make up for lost time. It's a great place to hang out and have bar food with free-flowing affordable beer out of the tap. And make sure to come hungry, because as the other reviewers have mentioned, the food here is way better than your average bar food. Me, I had the mushroom burger. The burgers here are , really, the best in town. They have about a dozen beers on tap...it is my local neighborhood bar, and I will be going more frequently. Kind of a hole in the wall, but a good hole it is. They have a jukebox, 2 pool tables, video games for the kids; yes it is a family establishment. Limited outdoor seating, cozy indoor seating. I think quite a bit of football is seen here, as the 3 flat screen TVs always have a game or 2 on when I'm there. Since there are two places to review this place for some reason, and I'm only one of two people on the other profile, I guess I'll just re-write it here. Or rather cut and paste it. So, if you've read it before, move along. Nothing to see here. ---------- Yeah, so if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm a vegetarian burger lover. It's a sad place to be. But I know a Happier place to be...Billy's! Granted, it's not as bright and shiny as Billy's (I can call him that. You can too when you see him there!) other restaurant enterprises. Namely the Crown and Anchor, the Dog and Duck (which I hear rumor will be closing?) and the dearly departed Waterloo Brewing Co. Still, it's got a nice little deck, good burgers with interesting toppings, an impressive draft beer selection, and one of those "Neo-Geo" video games that has all the old crappy ones we know and love. It also has one of the better veggie menus around for burger joints. You can get veggie burger replacing some of their more popular items like "The Ends" burger (named for the punk band), which sports spicy wing sauce and ridiculous amounts of bleu cheese. The typical "Vegetarian" burger is nothing to scoff at either, with melted muenster, avocado, tomato and sprouts. Yes, sprouts! It make you feel even healthier than that pesky lettuce that people still seem to be putting on burgers and salad and the like these days. What else? Well, veggies unite! We've also got veggie chili, veggie hot dogs, veggie cheese steaks (with jalps instead of those crappy bell peppers!), veggie chili dogs, frito pie, and an avocado reuben! Now, in all fairness, that one used to be better. Now, there's much more saurkraut than avocado. I prefer Magnolia's veggie reuben, but sometimes it's just what I want at Billy's. Great service with people who make an effort to remember your name. Also, the burgers are served on Kaiser rolls with mayo and not mustard (that's over by the condiments). It's a different style than some Southerner's are used to, so if that offends you, sorry. But they definitely make up for that with the array of sauces in the little table caddies. My fav of their condiments is Pickapeppa. I've used this sauce for years, and it never gets old. For those serious athletic types, there's also a pool table, darts, foosball, and that stupid golf video game that so many people love to play for some reason. WTF? Give me some real video games! Oh, and if you want something a little different from fries and onion rings, you don't have to suffer with a silly side salad. You can sub in fried okra, fried mushrooms or (ready for it?) fried green tomatoes! Which are actually green! If you read my review of Roux, you'd know how important that little detail is for me right now. And just in case you're feeling nostalgic for those great Jerk Chicken Wings that Shaggy's used to have down on the SoCo when it wasn't called that entirely gay name....they have Shaggy's Jerk Wings! Stop #4 on the Burnett dive-bar-tour, and also about the 4th best behind, Ginny's, Poodle Dog, and LaLa's (in that order). But its more than just the awkward step-cousin of the rightful Legends Of Burnett -- its a great Sunday retreat. Whereas the others aren't as accommodating with outdoor seating, good burgers/chili, and a couple of warped screens, Billy's makes sunday funday less scenester and more loungester. With a superb tap selection, sitting on the patio and smoking Camels seems like the right place at the right time, anytime. read more

I can't help but feel like a Draught House refugee whenever I am at Billy's. The Draught House is always crowded and with this place a little up the road, it is much nicer to hang out here and have the same neighborhood feel. They have a good beer selection, nice patio (with shade!), and the line never goes out the door. They also normally have a couple new beers on the specials board each week. The deck is a little crowded at times, but I can always find a place to sit. As for food, it is a vegetarian paradise. They will make any of the burgers with a veggie patty and also have veggie chili available. read more

Billy's has become my favorite neighborhood bar - even though I'm a bit removed from the immediate 'hood itself. I was introduced to Billy's by Mr. Brasil before he moved to his new swankienda downtown. Billy's has a great selection of beer but it's the food that keeps me coming back - especially the Frito Pie (gawd, I love FPs....). Their burgers are tasty and the prices are in line with similar joints. The owner (naturally named "Billy" - hey, this ain't no corporate-run, MBA 'metric' place with a fake Disneysque name...) is often there. That is a good sign. Dallas fans don't go there on Sundays during football season; it could be dangerous to your health. Yes, if you own any of the above items or similar paraphernalia you could be a Packer Backer! I know your pain; you hate Favre now I know I know! I would have loved to see him play at Minnesota. Glad you guys have your place to hover and eat and yell and beat on the table when a penalty is called on Green Bay, according to a Packer Backer I know he never thinks a Packer has committed a foul, only bad refs. Summing up: For those that live near by it may be great; but those of us that have to drive a long way it is just so-so. Food OK at best, beer is beer. Patrons are great! Lately Billy's on Burnet has been my go to for Sunday patio beers. Extensive beer selection and a menu that will/should accommodate all the picky eaters out there. I like that it has pool tables, jukebox, dart boards and several video games in the back. And it all fits into a building big enough for large groups or flying solo. This last Sunday I had the patty melt, which I have not had in a long time. It was soooo good, the way I was eating it you would think there would be Barry White or Marvin Gaye playing in the background.... Parking can be a pain since the parking lot holds maybe 10 cars, so you may have to hoof it's during lunch/dinner prime hours. Especially if you live in the area, it's a must to eat and drink. read more

I visited this place for the first time this afternoon/evening and am really surprised that Billy's on Burnet has an average of a 4-star rating. The cashier who took our order at the register was really terse, rude, and made it apparent that she did not value customer service. When we walked up to the register to place our order, another customer cut in front of us (this isn't the second grade!), and instead of kindly telling the customer that we were next to order, the cashier looked at us un-apologetically and proceeded to take the other customer's order. Not only were we immediately offered sub-par service when placing our order, one of the waiters spoke to us in his snarky, sarcastic, annoyed tone of voice when we asked for water. Instead of letting me speak, he cut me off mid-sentence as I was asking for the water jug to be refilled. Given this was a social outing to watch the Women's World Cup, I wanted to stick around. My friend had brought her dog so we ended up sitting outside on their patio. We asked both the waiter and cashier to switch the channel to the World Cup series at least THREE times over a span of 45 minutes and every time they gave us the same "it should be on that channel already" answer. Despite our efforts to convey that they were, in fact, wrong, they didn't even care enough to come outside to check. This is my first and last visit to Billy's on Burnet. read more

I would have given three stars but the burgers were great. I have to admit the parking is very limited. If there's no parking in their small lot, you have to use the side streets. It is a small place inside and there's a patio. I can't imagine during gameday when it's a Packers game how full this place is. I don't have an issue with Billy's being a Packers bar. I ordered the Quarter Pounder Basic American Cheeseburger with fries. And I must say it's pretty good portion. Again the burgers here are great. Everything about it was was just amazing - the garden patty had a great texture and it was topped with tons of avocado, a slice of brie, and plenty of other goodness. I wanted to love it. I tried and tried and tried. I brought my boss, my rugby team, my UT fan friends. Rarely has someone given so much benefit of the doubt to such an ultimately disappointing place. The third star is for Billy, because I love his other ventures, past and present (bring back Shaggy's!). He hangs out and takes a seemingly vested interest in his customers. Seemingly. And their prices on certain pitchers are incredible (Shiner Blonde is a cheap domestic... yay!). But here are my problems (and maybe they're just *my* problems): The place is a refrigerator and my boss always has to bring a sweater. The food is rather overpriced. Sure, the Ends Burger has flavor, but that little patty should be much cheaper than $7. And the specials, such as chicken fried steak or french dip or meatball sub are worse than some institutional cafetierias I've eaten in (no...not that kind of institution...haha). Oddly, the salads are good here. Very fresh and thoughtfully done. The Billy beans are good too. I know the staff are probably really gentle souls, but they seem to be cranky and hungover or tired from last night's gig (rawkin' musicians, I'm guessing). They never smile. They sometimes throw a vibe as if I had no business ordering what I ordered, or bothering them period. It pains me to say it, as I'm sure they're misunderstood the way many artists are misunderstood by the consuming masses. Still, this is a meal and I cherish mealtime. I'll go back plenty. I don't know why. Funny how the dude with the mohawk complains about the punky Allandale bar/grill, but his 60-something boss lady loves it. Oh well. Pass the pitcher, please! EDIT 7/2/09: I've been going back lately. I cannot seem to hate on this place. I've started getting the #1/3 burgers instead of the #1/4 ones. While they are still a tad pricey for their size (about $8.50), the extra meat is satisfying, as well as the fries. And the house salad with chicken is still very good. The staff is just fine. Still a bit down in the mouth at times, but sweet enough, and they remember you. They could use some plants on the patio. Otherwise you're basically eating and drinking in a parking lot at the corner of an intersection. This place seems to attract an older-than-average-bar-crowd. I've been here a couple of times and is now on my rotation of places to go. They have their usual bar food usuals burgers and fried food. My husband and I always enjoy their burgers there. I've had The Shults which is amazing! If you love bacon on your burger and can appreciate lots of crispy bacon then this is up your alley. I recently have been watching/balance my meat intake or you can say I'm like a part time vegetarian/pescatarian. One time I was there I was needed a vegetarian option and was happy to see that I had lots of choices to choose from. I got the Veggie Burger with fried zucchini and chipotle ranch. Yum! It was delightful. On another visit I got the friend pickles with the chipotle ranch and was surprised. They were spears with a different breading than I was used to. It was great because the batter was lighter and it all stayed together when you ate it. You know how sometimes the pickles and the breading separate? This did not do that. There's a decent mix of local beer and affordable prices. It's especially great during happy hour. There'a different special every day. If you're into trivia they do it on Wednesday. It seems every time i got it's trivia. I'm not there to play so it seems awkward that we're never playing. This place is small and cozy. There's seating inside and a patio outside which is dog friendly. I haven't had issues with seating but I'm sure as we move on to summer and if you go at peak time it will get crowded. read more

Billy's is fantastic, its the first stop on our annual Burnet road pub crawl. For the food, I like just about everything, especially the burgers and the peach fried pie (a la mode, of course) but I'm not really a fan of the nachos. They also have great lunch specials. Billy's is the perfect spot when half of your group wants to go to dinner and the other half just wants to booze it up. The other thing I love about Billy's is the arcade video games, there's Ms. Pacman, Galaga, a flying/shooting game (maybe its called 1942?) and a machine with a mix of about 30 streetfighter-esque and platform level games like ghosts and goblins. On the whole, Billy's is a great place to chill out, drink and eat great food. A special shout-out goes to the guys that gave us their table, chivalry still exists at Billy's! read more

The Billy Burger is legendary. It is, in my opinion, one of the single greatest burgers you'll have in Austin. I had a Billy Burger this past weekend with a group of friends and one of them commented that the Billy Burger is everything you want from a burger. No more. No less. Which is true. The meat is fantastic. The onions are fresh. The bun is soft. The fries are good. The onion rings are amazing. Seriously, it's a must-try burger. The bar itself is nice enough. So, why didn't Billy's make my Top Five Burger List? Well, it's not only about the burger. It's about the environment, and sadly that's where Billy's is a bit lacking on two major fronts; parking and beverages. The parking is a bit cramped. The entire establishment has but a few spaces and then you're left to hoof it from wherever you can find street parking. The soft drinks are in a can and served warm with a glass of ice. I might sound like a snob, but there's something about crushed ice and fountain beverages that really complete a burger experience. read more

Two words: HAPPIEST HOUR. From 4-5pm, they serve the lowest priced premium pints around. Normal happy hour lasts until 7pm, during which you can order some awesome appetizers (I am particularly fond of the fried okra -- it's super cheap and a big enough quantity to share with a friend or two. Plus it comes out piping hot and delicious and I'm a sucker for anything you can dip in ranch dressing). The patio is dog friendly and fills up quickly. It goes from empty to packed in record speeds (as does the parking lot). My only complaint here is that the parking is pretty inadequate for the popularity of this place, and that the awkward angles of the parking lot make car accidents a real probability. Despite the popularity, this place still very much feels like a hole-in-the-wall secret or like a second home. The crowd is never obnoxious and the staff is so small that it becomes easy to recognize familiar faces. Oh, and for a beer snob like me, the rotating weekly taps always give me something to look forward to. read more

I'm giving this place 4 stars because of their very good queso. And, their cheap beer. Though, to be honest, I still like Torchy's queso better because it has more of a kick. I like a spicy queso. I don't think I like the inside of this place at all. But the patio is not bad. I say not bad because it is also not completely good, either. The problem with the patio area, from my point of view, is that it is right on top of a major road with no trees or anything to serve as a buffer. So you can expect your evening to be filled with smells and sounds of the road. Not that I hate the smells and sounds of the road, but I just don't like them when trying to eat, drink or have a conversation. Honestly, what made this evening was the company I was keeping. I think you could hang out anywhere with Coleen L and consider it a 5 star experience. If not for her, poor Billy's would probably only get 3 stars from me. read more

I came to Billy's because online reviews said they had fried green tomatoes and a good vegetarian selection, especially for a pub. And because their outdoor patio is dog-friendly. And I got exactly that: some good fried green tomatoes, a very impressive vegetarian selection (for a pub) and a dog-friendly patio. Can't comment on the beer, as I didn't have any. The woman behind the register was a little spacy/impolite, but since you don't have to interact with her other than when you're ordering, this wasn't a big deal. It had been several years since I had been to Billy's. And I got exactly what I remembered and expected... an extremely relaxed and diverse crowd, decent food, and great variety reasonably priced beers on tap. Parking is often a bit of a challenge, but I lucked out this particular Friday happy hour and got a spot right out front. The parking gods were good to me. I must admit that I LOVE the fact that the kid's menu is for "Kids of All Ages." Especially nice since I have no kids. Phew. I was moderately excited to be trying Billy's as well as meeting up with the North Central Austin Church of Yelp Gatheration brotherhood. So as we locked up our car and as we approached the place I was stopped and told I had better not park there due to the A-holes next door to Billy's will tow simply out of spite...even though whatever business it is was closed. So off i go to re-park. So 1 star to the jerks next to Billy's. 5 stars to the fellow who warned me. After briefly greeting the Gatheration members we were off to the bar to order some goodies. I was craving a Land Shark but it wasn't to be. So I got a 512 and was completely satisfied. We ordered the Shaggy chicken wings but as soon as I saw Camron's hamburger I regretted that decision. The wings were very tasty but all I could think of was how good the burgers looked here...Note to self - Get a burger next time fool ! Although it's a bit pricey, their burgers are out of this world! The staff is very friendly. After I had a surgery that prevented me from cooking, my husband pick up orders to go about once a week. I recommend that you try it at least once. They have a good happy hour with a lively group of guests and a good selection of beers. read more

I work really close to Billy's but hadn't actually eaten here until yesterday. After having my heart broken numerous times by a Sandwich Joint that shall remain nameless...I was desperate for a turnaround: I got the burger lunch special (burger, fries and tea) for pretty cheap. Instead of fries I got the fried okra because I'm female AND southern. The meal was delicious. I heard all the hype around this place and I was skeptical...but after my meal I knew that all those afternoons spent longingly looking out the door at Billy's was not in vain. Ah Billy's, I love you so. This place is incredible. We were fortunate enough to move into the neighborhood and have become regulars. Where to begin? The food is great, I've never been disappointed. There are plenty of vegetarian options including veggie chili, veggie hot dog, a avocado rueben and a veggie phillie cheese-steak. I must admit, I got the vegetarian burger the first time I went to Billy's and I can't bring myself to try anything else. It is so delicious. You can sub okra, fried green tomatoes, onion rings, billy beans, and some other things instead of fries if you're feeling adventurous. All are lovely. There is a pool table, dart boards, and old school arcade games. There is a patio that allows smoking and dogs. There is a great jukebox. There is also a great selection of beers. Be sure to hit it up during the "happiest hour" from 4-5 for great prices on the brews. We visit the Billy's at least twice a week and have never been let down. Billy himself is usually at the bar and this proves for great quality control. Yum, it's so good here. Come on out and bring your dog. Be sure to try the fried pie for me, I've never made it that far, but the word on the street is it takes two people to eat one. read more
