It happens to me every time I go to Sam's (which really isn't often enough). They have a fantastic selection of imports and microbrews. The wine and liquor selections are outstanding as well. The first time I made the trip to Sam's I was there for 3 hours...and they used to have a sale in Fall and Spring -- and things were so cheap I would order 3-4 cases of stuff. I like Sam's enough to drive into the heart of the Clyborn corridor during holiday shopping season. What more can I say??? I'll say more anyway. Sam's has the most unbelievable selection of wines, beers, liquors, and deli-type products. Sometimes, it's even a little overwhelming. But, the staff really knows their stuff. If you're lost, undecided, or panicked from the sheer number of choices, they can help. There are deals to be had too - Sam's stock ranges from cheap and good to expensive and amazing. I also love how the store is organized - by country, varietal, and producer. Once you get the system down, it's really easy. But, there are a few problems (neither of which deems the loss of a star). First, getting there can be a pain in the ass. The area is set up so you almost have to drive - so there will be traffic. Second, because Sam's is so awesome people come in droves. Seriously. I was there last weekend when a "shopping tour bus" from someplace like Rockford unloaded one hundred middle-aged women for a wine shopping-spree. It was soccer mom madness. read more

I was indifferent about Sam's. They frequently carried beers I had a hard time finding anywhere else, but I felt the staff sucked. The first time I came to this Binny's was on NYE. Despite how crazy the parking lot was, they had people directing traffic and I found a spot instantly. Inside it was a madhouse, obviously. I came across a few people that were great and really helpful. I also came across a few people that were clearly ready for the store to be closed. Came in here the other day for a bottle of wine and ended up with two! The guy who was helping me was actually one of the guys who helped me the first time. He was informative without being condescending, he had no problem walking all around the wine department with me and recommended two wines, one of which I tried and really enjoyed. This is also the only Binny's (and only store in general) where I've been able to find Pearl Plum vodka! They carry all four types of Pearl vodka, but OHMYGOD how I love the Pearl Plum! Also, my favorite thing thus far about this Binny's? THE CASHIERS! I hate when cashiers are rude (anywhere) and find it seems to be a rule in Binny's...but the cashiers here were really nice, even when I kept giving them the wrong zip code for my Binny's card that I was too lazy to get from my car. As a Cali beer head, I think I had a mild stroke when I walked in this place and saw shelf after shelf of so many delicious East coast beers!! But Binny's is truly amazing because of the customer service I experienced by a single employee at the store. We were running late for our flight back home and I still had bottles of beer I need to package properly to check in, and was freaking out about the limited time I had, in addition to the thought of having to go elsewhere to find bubble wrap and tape. As I was purchasing the shipping box for my beers, I mentioned my dilemma to the check out girl, and she offered to pack up my beers for me! Who the hell seriously goes out of their way to assist a customer in such way??? I brought her my bottles, and 10 minutes later, she came back out with a bottles all packaged up and ready to go. I couldn't leave without hugging her for being so awesome! I wish I could remember her name! Needless to say, my bottles made it safely home due to careful packaging. Binnys is the highlight of every trip to chicago for me. There's nothing like it in Pennsylvania or for that matter any place I've been. There used to be a place called the Liquor Barn in California which came close but Binnys blows away all others. The wine selection is spectacular and the pricing, especially the weekly club specials is fabulous. With knowledgeable staff, huge selection, and terrific service, Binny's is the standard against which all others should be measured. The Lincoln Park store is a wine and beer lovers paradise. I could spend hours there with my shopping cart and a wish list. Love it. read more

My family goes to Binny's over other places because of their unparalleled selection. They've got it all, and handle holiday rushes like pros. But I don't buy here anymore. The 3 stars comes from a bizarre experience back in February involving pair of sarcastic cashiers at this location who could barely pause their deep discussion about which club they were going to "get their drink on" at after work to make fun of me (imagine any pun you can about the word "nuts") and tell me that they've never heard of the Bees Knees peanut products Binny's normally carries, and to "go to a gas station" if I want to get nuts. The customer service desk sent me on a wild goose chase to the food department (the nuts used to be located by the registers) and refused to look up if the product actually existed. The only people actually willing to pause their personal conversations to help me were the guys by the wine department and the really considerate lady by the cheese department. This place is like disney land for adults who like a little drinky drinky. I'm not saying you have to be an alcoholic to enjoy it here, not at all. I myself am not an alcoholic, but I do dearly enjoy a little drinky drinky. Once in awhile a lot of drinky drinky, okay lets move on to what's important. One great thing is that they always have tastings. Wine tastings, booze of all kinds, beer once in awhile. I tried Absinthe here for the first time in my 27 years of life and thoroughly enjoyed it! I would have never purchased the stuff without first tasting it, and thanks to Binny's I can buy even more types of liquor and spend even more money because of the great sampling they share with us. Best Binny's in chicago area hands down bar none. It must be the mangament philosphy at this location, they are a cut above other stores in terms of customer service and friendliness. Any Binny's has an incredible beer selection whether it be bottles, cans or kegs, in additional to the full spectrum of wine and hard liquor (which is always quicker for a trip to buzzville). Accessories for any home bar are in stock and reasonably price as well. All in all bottom line is drive the extra few miles and go to this location for excellent customer service and always a smile. read more

Cheese rating, not booze... Sam's had the best cheese counter in the city. Now it's Binny's, and their cheese department has PARTTIME HOURS! What nonsense. All the cheeses are there, the staff is there in the back room, but they don't open the "Gourmet Food" section but for part of the time the store is open. I talked to a manager about it. "Limited staffing" was his excuse. What crap! Cover the cheese counter and you'll quickly pay for the added labor cost. I was there half an hour before the limited hours start and its tough luck - I guess they never heard of customer service. That's what drove customers away when Sam's became the "new" Sam's a few years ago. Did they keep the same dimwits in management after the acquisition? I would have loved to buy their Spanish Zamarano at $18 a pound, but instead bought it a few blocks south at Whole Foods for $22 a pound. I made a $70 cheese purchase, and the lady standing behind me at Binny's, who also didn't get waited on, also wanted an assortment of cheeses. With the markup on cheeses, we would have well covered the labor costs to take care of us and more. So their cheese selection is still good, but their attitude knocks them back to four stars. Ok, if you like beer, or wine, or any alcohol really, you will love this place. My husband and I were like kids in a candy store. The beer selection is AMAZING. I feel like a lot of places play down their beer selection but oh man, Binnys totally blew away my expectations. So many beers. SO MANY. OHMAHGOD. Rows and rows of them. The employees were super helpful in helping us find some good selections, because, really, like I said.... the selection is completely overwhelming. Too bad they don't have the beer that I tasted in Belgium...but I think I can rest easy now, because if Binny's doesn't have it it's likely it's not even sold in our state. I can stop looking. I actually like the spooky old beaten up original Sam's at the corner of Halsted and North better but hey I'm a sucker for nostalgia. Sam's has an outstanding, world class selection with pricing that is often less than what it wholesales for. Yes. They buy in such large quantities that they get the best pricing in the country and happily pass it on to the consumer. Their staff is extremely knowledgeable in their various departments and its a great place to ask questions! They are more than happy to share their extensive training with you when you want to know what to serve with pot roast or potato chips. I should take one star off for the Beaujolais sampling lady asking if I was Brett's mom (not possible but I did have goofy old lady glasses with rhinestones on them on that day), But I won't because she let us taste six wines before buying them! read more

I went here recently for an event and this is hands down my favorite Binnys location. First off it's massive! You feel like a kid in a candy store when you enter. I was here for a tasting event and the room was beautiful and airy. The staff was helpful and I was able to find a few new wines that I like. When I needed wedding alcohol, there was only one place to go. I already shop here when I need something I can't get at the corner store (and it is my chief Malört supplier), so I figured it was a good wedding supplier too. Worked with Jeff, and he helped us with recommendations and quantities for our reception. We got a good variety of beer, wine, and liquor at good prices. Their wine person also made a recommendation on wine we could save as a keepsake. The return process was quick and painless - they oversell you on the original order, but you can take back unopened cases and liquor, so we got about 25% of our order refunded. The only warning - make sure you order stuff you like, because they can't take back open cases of the cheap beer. We'll be trying to get rid of Miller Lite for a while... :) read more

I love this store mostly because it has everything you need. I need to call out one of the wine managers though. They have two of them. One is shorter and has a beard, or used to. He's amazing. Nice guy. Honest, makes good recommendations, knows how to work retail, and knows when he is needed and when patrons need more time on their own. He's great. I think his name is Mark. Then there is the other guy. Taller, never smiles, has a distinct air of entitlement. If the other guy isn't there I'll ask him stuff (but not again). He's rude, arrogant always wants to upsell you. He scoffs at you if in your cart you don't have expensive stuff ( which is downright funny because most times I'm shuffling around for the harder to find stuff). The most recent occasion, which finally pushed me to write this, he looked into my cart (full of Sauternes, Rioja, some mid priced cru( 50$) Bordeaux, that I found in sale for $35, and some great beers. Admittedly, I'm in my early thirties, but more knowledgeable, by accreditation than most of these retail folks as I'm educated in wine professionally. I look young, and hate being treated like a kid. This guy was so condescending about my purchases as all my wine was sale stuff (and none of it was below $27 on sale btw) and said he'd just point me to the sale stuff as that must be all I'm looking for anyways. What a crappy thing to say. Sorry I didn't come to buy Grand Cru Burgundy today. Sorry I didn't choose to spend $750 on that magnum of Premier Cru Bordeaux that day. I can tell you next time I do, and trust me, I will, it won't be for you. My Bordeaux futures ship soon btw buddy. Thanks for alienating a good customer. Crazy parking on the weekend. Be careful of the SUV driving moms getting booze for that dinner party and the frat boys and sorority girls getting kegs after going to the gym, but there is a reason the lot is full - this place has an amazing selection of booze, talented and knowledgeable staff, and good prices on often hard to find stuff. These guys are great at what they do. I watched as one of the wine guys helped a guy who I think plays for the Cubs pick out a bottle of wine. His wife was pretty but not too smart (hey, who knows - carrying a giant diamond ring is work right?) and the wine guy was very friendly and helpful to them - and eventually convinced her that the cheaper wine was better and that people would enjoy it more than if she had just grabbed the most expensive wine in the category as she was going to do on impulse. Now, that is a cool dude, who loves wine and wants people to enjoy their drinks more than make a sale. Hat's off to Binny's for being my favorite place to get booze for over 15 years! read more

Have you ever been to a liquor warehouse? Well then, you must go... it's amazing. This store has everything. Each department has very helpful staff members to navigate you through the many wines, spirits and beers. I don't know very much about wine, so it's nice to be able to ask someone what I'd like and take suggestions. The beer section is great - they have anything you can think of and it's all pretty reasonably priced. The spirits are endless and it's almost impossible to know everything they have at one time. There is such a huge selection that it's impossible not to find what you need here. All in all, I've always had a great experience here. Good specialty foods for parties (olives, cheese, crackers, etc.) and great liquor. read more

Went to this place for the first time and just thought, wow! You don't really realize how many variations of wine there are until you go to a place that has it all in one warehouse. We went there specifically for a bottle of Dom (for a work function) and all I could think about was I need to drink more wine and get more into this. Sam's Service is unbeatable. They are fabulous for special orders and incredibly helpful to the novice wine and spirit drinker. Around Christmas I had remembered a bottle of tequila in a cute bottle that was given to me as a gift. I decided that I wanted to get a case of it to give to friends & coworkers. I had called around and no one had it in stock. They gave me a quote right away and had it delivered within a few days. The quote was well below the regular retail price but they still honored the quote. Thank you Sam's! You made my friends and coworkers very happy. This review is completely unnecessary since everyone who's ever been to Chicago knows how awesome Binny's is, but I had to share how wonderful their customer service is! I've been to both the Clark Street and North Av Binny's locations and am just always so impressed with how friendly and nice the staff is. From the cashiers to the managers, you get the impression that the employees are treated well and genuinely want to help you. I had an issue with a pretty expensive bottle of bourbon recently and the manager was cool enough to let me come in and replace it...I was in shock! I've heard equally awesome stories about people being allowed to replace beer that tasted off. Also...free tastings and now a bad ass tasting room give me even more incentive to go to Binny's. If you haven't checked out the tasting room, definitely make it a point to go! The bartender was great! read more

Have shopped here twice while helping friends stock up for big parties. Great selection, found everything we wanted. And we wanted A LOT. Spent $700 on the most recent trip. Prices on hard liquor are excellent, wine prices are good, beer prices are only par. Wine selection not the widest I've seen (I've lived in California for 10+ years) but I did find some older vintages of excellent wines. My one dislike is that the wine bottles are in baskets, not on shelves, which makes them harder to browse. Part of the reason I mentioned $700: no snide comments or questions from the staff about the size of our purchase. I've gotten crap at other places on much smaller purchases. At Binny's we simply got help boxing it up and carrying it to the car. read more

Not sure why this place has such good ratings. They don't allow well trained pets in the store - meanwhile I saw multiple children roaming around at almost 9 at night. Not even a greeting when we entered - literally within a second we got "is that a service animal?" It's the way it was presented and the nonchalant response that really ticked me off. There are better ways and tones in which to tell someone your store policy (as a business owner myself, I know this). We didn't even argue, we just left - the other Binny's stores we have been to in the downtown area ALL are pet friendly. Just a silly, inconsistent, short-sighted decision by the owners. If you allow pets, allow them in every store to avoid confusing people, or don't allow them at all so I can take my business somewhere that I'm valued. read more

This place is HUGE and has a great selection. It's the largest Binny's i've been to - and i've been to a lot, if I do say so myself. Craft beer selection is similar to the other locations, but this place has way more wines, champagnes, liquors, and what have you. Would I go back here? Yes. But i'd only try the tasting room one more time. The tasting room is beautiful, but I really expected a bigger beer selection - maybe beer flights? I don't know if the bartender just had permanent RBF, or if he was just in a delightfully bad mood that day - but holy crap, man! Every weekend, Binny's is my second stop after Whole Foods. They have an amazing deli with a huge selection of Raw cheeses and a very affordable Speck and Prosciutto. I actually don't even look at the WH deli, as I know that Binny's little corner cheese&meat counter will be not only line-free, but also staffed by someone so far from the Hipster-attitude that it is always a pleasure to spend 20 minutes selecting your cheeses for the weekend. The alcohol selection is incredible - $14k Cognac, anyone? The variety of every kind of red wine imaginable, which goes very well with that raw cheese, is the second selling point for me. No overpriced WH wine for me, no sir. I also really enjoy the booze tastings that seem to happen every time I'm in the store. read more

My wife and I were going back and forth with alcohol vendors for our do-it-yourself wedding at Stan Mansion. At first, I was concerned with pricing and getting the best bang for the buck. After meeting with Jeff C at Binny's (Lincoln Park location), I not only knew we were getting the best deal, but that we would also get the best service. Binny's is EXTREMELY FORTUNATE to have Jeff C. He is dedicated only to planning and coordinate big events and he only works out of the Lincoln Park store. We walked into the store, told him our favorite wines, types of drinks we wanted, and he did the rest. He knows his stuff. I thought I was being a wine snob since I have a picky pallet with wines, but he knew what I wanted. Everyone has a budget in mind and Jeff C won't try to take advantage just to hit that dollar amount - he will tell you how high or low you can go with your drink options and which wines you can afford within your budget. All we had to do was tell Jeff C our total head count and he broke down how many bottles of wine, champagne, and mixed drinks our guests would have. Amazing! We were in and out of Binny's within 60 minutes and payment was not due until a week before the wedding. I'm on Binny's mailing list and 2 of our wines went on sale so Jeff C was really flexible and went back to update our estimate with the sale price. The final win/win relates to Binny's policy of returning any unopened alcohol. We ended up getting $300 back with the unused wine we returned. Win/Win! Jeff C - if I could give you a million stars I would. You were one of the most fun and humureous vendors and it was a pleasure to work with you. The holy grail of alcohol. This store has literally anything and everything you could want in a liquor store, and even better, they have prices you can't beat! I know this for a fact since I went with a friend who works in the industry and confirmed that Binnys really does have unbeatable bang for your buck. Their wine selection is out of this world boasting of high quality brands at affordable prices. Furthermore they have an outstanding champagne / tasting room which is unlike any other liquor stores I have ever seen. Such a luxury it is to be able to drink while you shop! They also have samples around the store and incredibly knowledgeable workers who can tell you exactly what's in stock as well as information on certain brands or suggestions based on your personal preferences. Their beer selection should not be overlooked either. Amazing amount of craft beer, especially of the more local/Chicago breweries in 6 or 12 packs, as well as create your own option to choose a sampler pack.
