Attended a bridal shower at the Bird Bakery and everything was super good. The cupcakes was melt in your mouth good, just sensational they even had some gluten free cupcakes that taste good, and I don't really care for gluten free foods because most of it taste like dried cardboard but somehow they made their cupcakes taste good. Is hard to say what is my favorite but here it goes. the honey cheesecake it's fabulous, rich and creamy and you can share it amongst 4 people. The Cookie Monster cookie is HUGE and has so much chocolate, it goes great with black coffee or a cup of milk. The cupcakes.. oh the cupcakes... THEY ARE AMAZING! The carrot cake cupcake is so flavorful and soft, the decadent chocolate is equally delicious and my husband loves the Elvis it is banana and peanut butter. Have been a customer for at least 5 years but bird has gone downhill. The people aren't friendly and the cupcakes are hit or miss. Sometimes they're perfect others it's like they're old and super sweet no flavor. I went in for some yesterday and they all crumbled as soon as we took a bite. I forgot how good this place was! I always have a sweet tooth so I always come here for the cookies. However, the other day I got the strawberry and red velvet cupcakes and they are so good! Perfect consistency and the strawberry cupcake wasn't too sweet! However I wish they had more cream cheese in the red velvet frosting. Bird Bakery did absolutely beautiful cupcakes for our wedding, working with our design suggestions and their own style, all with outstanding flavor.  They were also very accommodating with gluten-free cupcakes, which the gluten-free folk said were amazing; the bakery also clearly but subtly marked these among the other cupcakes so it was clear which were gluten free but without shifting the design presentation too dramatically.  (The latter wasn't something critical to me, but it was just another example of Bird Bakery's attention to both little and big details.) The shop itself is nice and bright, filled with light-toned, rustic furnishings.  Large windows let in the daylight.  The staff is warm, friendly, and helpful.  The cases hold a range of very pretty cupcakes and cakes, as well as several types of cookies and other pastries.  The cupcakes have great flavor -- they did skirt being 'too sweet' for me, but stayed on the positive side of that. I'd come here again for dessert or to try the great-looking sandwiches, and I'd definitely recommend them for wedding cupcakes! read more

Wow! I called last Saturday in a panic needing a cake or cupcakes for my fiancé mother. It was very last minute but I knew that everything made at Bird Bakery is yummy! Young, high school group of girls just gossiping away in high pitches voices behind the checkout counter. You can tell they're probably smart girls, but not very accommodating or aware of anyone else but themselves...my quiche was served "cool" and the girl checking me out was just super pushy and bouncy. Been in a number of times and I'm quite the fan. I have been to a few cupcake shops here and nothing has won over Bird Bakery. They are a bit overpriced, but they are so charming, from the friendly employees, to the cute shop, to the over the top cute packaging, I don't quite care how overpriced they are. I will say, I came and got a breakfast sandwich and that was very lackluster. A shame, since some of my favorite breakfast sandwiches, were from bakeries similar to this. Oh well, stick with their baked goods. I need to come and give them a shot for lunch. I usually come quite early, right when they are putting out cupcakes at 9am. But when I have come at lunch, the place is packed. Perfect place for a little lunch date with girlfriends. The girls who work here are always really sweet and friendly. And it goes without saying, the adorable decor is the cherry on top. If you are cupcake fan and are in the mood to treat yo self, give this place a visit. Came here after work with my daughter. I wanted to try a particular cupcake because I was planning a retirement and the retiree requested a yellow cupcake with chocolate icing. So I wanted to see if it was worth ordering a couple dozen. I got the Nostalgic Yellow and my daughter got the Blue Vanilla. For the good part, her blue vanilla icing was good! Everything else...Ill pass on. Both cake were dry and hard. My chocolate icing tasted like it was gluten and sugar free. It left an awful after taste...so for those who love the desserts here...good for you!!! But I'll just stay with Nothing Bundt Cakes for special occasions. A friend suggested this place for lunch with the warning that it's "kinda hipster." She was absolutely right that there's a very clear small boutique bakery feel to the place, but I've been back many times since and I love it! I can't get over how great the simple California turkey sandwich is. I haven't tried their cupcakes yet, but they all look tantalizingly at you from behind the glass. Where to start... I love this place. I am there 2-3 times a week and it would be more, but I am trying to control myself. The sandwiches are amazing and I stayed away from them for a long time because I figured that a cupcake place wouldn't have good sandwiches. I usually stick to the california turkey that has a raspberry chipotle mayo that I was shocked to LOVE. My second go to sandwich is the egg salad. It is loaded with dill and so yummy, but if you don't like dill then save yourself the time and don't get it. On the other hand if you are an egg salad person you should get it because there is said to be a cult following behind this sandwich. As for their coffee drinks... I can't have caffeine, but I have had taste of many of the drinks. The sea salt caramel latte is really yummy and I am sad that I can't get it. I usually stick to my decaf when I go and it is yummy. I guess now I should talk about the cupcakes. They do seasonal ones and I have fallen in love with all of them. I barely get the regular ones which are also great, but I have to savor the seasonal ones as much as possible. The sea salt caramel is probably my favorite though... I know I like sea salt a lot. I think I have tried every cupcake they have and honestly you can't go wrong... it's all up to what you like. For those who like oatmeal cookies, get the monster cookie. I hate oatmeal cookies, although I liked their holiday cookie with oatmeal, white chocolate, and cranberries... anyways back to my point. I have been enjoying dinner at Bird many times and seen multiple people come in just for the cookie. These monster cookies sell out probably every night. I usually get the chocolate chip with walnuts...yum! As for the atmosphere, honestly I would rather hang out at Bird then my own home. I would get this every time Carrot Cake - I am usually not a carrot cake person but this was freaking delicious! Yellow Cake w/ Chocolate Frosting - Definitely not my favorite but its still really really good. Fudgey Brownie- Like the name, fudgey and chewy and yummy and just ridiculously addicting. I've been a fan of cupcakes since, well, ever since I can remember actually. And I'm guessing I'll be a fan until my dying day. After all, it's like having your own personal cake and you don't even need a fork! Who wouldn't like that? And even though it would take something really severe for me to find a cupcake I didn't like, there is a huge difference between a cupcake that is just a'ight and a cupcake that makes you dream of sweet nothings and crave them for days after consumption. Bird Bakery's cupcakes fall into the latter camp for me. The cake is soft and moist and the frosting! It's the right mix of rich, creamy, and sugary without being too sweet in my opinion. Taste is one side of things (and probably the most important), but these people also do presentation really well. For example, my six pack of mini cupcakes came in a half egg carton. I never anticipated writing a review about a cup-cakery but here we go: The Bird is the word! My wife pulled me into Bird promising we would just take a look. This, I found out, is similar to just 'looking' at the four-week-old puppies. It was fair to say that the red velvet cupcake is the starter-drug. After enjoying the wonderfully moist and sweet cake, I felt all my surroundings simply fade away. Not normally an icing person, the icing on this cupcake was pretty good. But I can't put my finger one why it was so good (perhaps drugs). Kidding. Maybe. Needless to say we have been visiting Bird ever since. There are a number of other things they do well. Lunch is pretty good if you're into sandwiches and chips. Highly recommend the crunchy peanut butter and jalapeno jelly and the California club. Not sure if they bake/make their own bread but it is solid. I won't go on-and-on about the cupcakes but I did order a 12" red velvet cake for my wife's birthday and it was worth every penny. Pros: Bird Bakery features fresh-baked specialty breads, cakes, pies, and pastries. This is a nice place to sit and enjoy breakfast or a pastry with coffee. Cons: Bird Bakery really pulls in the Alamo Heights crowd and it can get busy during lunch hour and on weekends. While the sandwich I had was nice, it was not quite as memorable as, say, Madhatters. Vegetarians: Pimento cheese, nostalgic grilled cheese, egg salad, Nutella, and PBJ sandwiches are the lunch choices that vegetarians have. I am sorry to say that vegans are out of luck here. The second I walked into fashionable little Bird Bakery, my testosterone level plummeted. In fact, it may have even dipped lower than my estrogen level (yes, men do have estrogen). I was strangely relaxed, yet chatty, and, all of the sudden, I had a mean craving for cupcakes. Not just for one or two, but like a whole plate full. The colors were so pretty and coordinated and there were like little twittery birds everywhere! I had found Cupcake Heaven, and I was shocked that it secretly existed in San Antonio. In all seriousness, Bird Bakery is a charming bakery with trendy and rustic touches... kind of the heirloom chic decorating trend. It is a welcoming little space separate from the crazy hustle-bustle of the busy, workaday world, except when the bakery itself is busy. I recommend visiting at a time other than the weekday lunch hour or weekend brunch. Coming by at an off hour will allow you to take in the entire colorful, sweetastic panorama of cakes, cookies, pies, cupcakes, and brownies. You will need a few unrushed minutes to view all the offerings. On my visit, I tried the tarragon chicken salad and black iced tea. I was curious about a special iced cherry blossom green tea that was featured. When I inquired, the server behind the pastry counter gladly offered me a little sample. It was nice, but I chose to go with the straight, black iced tea. And, as it turns out, I LOVE chicken salad and I LOVE tarragon. Consequently, when I see a tarragon chicken salad on a menu, I am under serious personal obligation to try it. My girlfriend chose the egg salad. Both sandwiches are served on wheat and sunflower seed bread, but it can be substituted for regular wheat or white bread. I am under the impression that Bird Bakery bakes all their own breads. We found a table and waited about ten minutes for our fresh food. The presentation was nice: a whole sandwich with a side of ruffled potato chips and a pickle spear. I tried mine and thought it was nice, though maybe a bit salty. It seems to me that the saltiness came from the mustard. Combined with the little bit of salt in the chicken salad and the little bit in the Havarti cheese, it added up to a little bit too much. The chicken salad was alright, but I think it lacked a little something extra. Comparatively, the tarragon chicken salad at Central Market is superb, as is the chicken salad from Whole Foods and the pineapple chicken salad from Jason's Deli. I tried a bit of my girlfriend's egg salad and, although I am by no means a connoisseur of egg salad, I thought it was decent. But, it doesn't matter; my girlfriend enjoyed it and thought it was good. I must point out that if you do go to Bird Bakery, you would commit a very serious injustice if you do not indulge in a baked good. The cakes, cupcakes, pies, and cookies are the piece de resistance and one of the better baked goods finds in the city. I am partial to the cupcakes. Pick the flavors you like and, trust me, you will not be sorry. The service at Bird Bakery is very good. On our visit, our server behind the pastry counter was cheerful, very friendly, and patient with us. I couldn't ask for anything more, especially since I am of the impression that customer service is every bit as important as the taste and quality of the food. read more

This is one of my favorite new spots for lunch, just across from Bike World and Local Coffee, two of my other favorite AH places. Bird Bakery is more of a cafe than a bakery. And the interior could be photographed for the Anthropologie catalogue. I love that their sandwiches aren't overthought--no paninis that are trying too hard. The menu includes traditional turkey, egg salad, nostalgic grilled cheese, and PBJ, as well as a few others. Similarly, the cupcakes are not overadorned. Who really wants three inches of nasty dyed icing? Not me. Bird Bakery keeps it real with just the right amount and no day-glo colors. But if you're over cupcakes, the cookies here are great, and the pumpkin muffin will kick the ass of any other pumpkin muffin. Service is ALWAYS friendly and the food is classic, fresh, and tasty. I do find myself wishing they'd add a soup to the menu. I probably feel this way because the sandwiches are so good. And it's true, it all adds up. Long review, quick thoughts: We definitely will not be back. The only part of the experience I liked was my pickle, and that's not an exaggeration. I think the fact that this is one of San Antonio's best rated bakeries says more to the low expectations of the city than it does for the quality of food. I was disappointed in the food, the ease of ordering was not good, I was bothered throughout the whole meal thinking about how inaccessible the restaurant was for anyone with a disability (especially for users of mobility devices), and it was annoying to have to drink water from a tiny plastic cup that I would have to make another guest uncomfortable to refill. Our lunch here started out rough when we found no prices listed anywhere, you have no idea how much you're going to pay until you're checking out. That's just silly to me, I can't think of any reason to do that. No prices on the menu, on the display cases, on the wall, etc. Our meals were about $9 each and the desserts around $4 each. Not bad, but not sure why they don't just list them. The other big issue that I have with their set up was that it screamed inaccessible to me. As someone with a disability that usually uses a service dog, the restaurant was set up weird and crammed so it would've been really hard to navigate if I was using my service dog today. I can't imagine being in there in a wheelchair, there's technically enough of an isle to get to the counter and 2 of the tables but getting water in a wheelchair wouldn't be possible and it was too crammed to really be functional in one. If one of the 2 tables that seemed like they could be used by a wheelchair user if someone else moved the extra chairs was taken, they wouldn't be able to get to the other tables because of how crammed they were. Someone in a wheelchair also couldn't have gotten themselves a menu, seen most of their options on the wall, and ordering would be difficult as well. I get that it's a small shop, but I would be embarrassed if I was the owner and someone was in a wheelchair in there because of how hard it would be to navigate. Accessibility really does matter. Maybe if it was empty it'd be okay, but it seems to be always at least a bit busy. Getting water was annoying because it was directly behind a table so you have to squeeze behind them, it's weird for everyone involved. The plastic water cups are tiny, I had to get up to refill my cup 3 times during our 20 minute lunch. Not sure why they don't just use normal sized cups that are reusable or have it somewhere easier to see. We started with our desserts while we waited for the food, my cupcake was stale and weak, definitely a stark comparison from the reviews I saw here. Literally nothing notable about it, other than an odd crunch. My boyfriend liked his brownie, because he likes crunchy brownies. It just seemed stale to me though. I really wanted to like it, I was really excited about our trip here, but it just was nothing I couldnt have gotten from H-E-B. I also really did not like the wood fork they served it with, but saw no normal silverware. The spinach and artichoke grilled cheese was fine, no complaints there. The chips weren't my favorite, they were pepper and maybe vinegar chips? I only had a few, not worth it. Only part of my meal that I actually enjoyed was the pickle that came with my sandwich, which is pretty telling. Boyfriend said his egg salad sandwich wasn't good, very dry and bread was stale. He liked the soup though. Other notable thing, they had a sign on their register that said something along the lines of "no refunds, complaints must be made within 24 hours" which seemed tacky to me, and also put the thought into my mind that they must get a lot of complaints. This bakery is the cutest establishment I have ever seen! Whimsical, rustic, & clean. I love the bird details, wire and wooden tables, & chalkboard quotes! This would definitely be a perfect place to hang out & catch up with an old friend. +1 extra star just for the ambiance. Their customer service is the best! The red velvet cake was rich and moist, & actually delicious, but it was overloaded with frosting that was much too sweet. I had a stomach ache after eating it. The apple pie looked good, with a thick caramelized sauce on top with the apples, but the sauce had too much spice to it, & even after I baked it in the oven to warm- the crust stayed soggy & gooey. The tomato pie was not any better- it was SOOOOO oily!!! I lifted it from the pan & oil was sitting on the bottom, & a squeeze down of my fork caused oil to ooze and pool. Really, do not waste your time. I went in for a few cupcakes. I decided on the yellow with chocolate frosting first. One cupcake was labeled "seasonal" so I asked the counter person what flavor it was and he responded "it's our seasonal". Really now? I then asked what the SEASONAL flavor is and he said "St. Germain" and walked away. Another young lady noticed me and helped me with the rest of my order. Once I got home, I noticed that both the cupcakes were incredibly firm to the touch and the frosting totally crusted over. I tried the St. Germain first. Just as I expected; dry and dense. The flavor was also incredibly bitter and the frosting crumbled off as I bit into the cake. The yellow with chocolate frosting wasn't much better. The cake portion is SO dry. It tasted at least a day old. I know the owner harps on and on about how they bake fresh every day so maybe it's just their recipes that are terrible or the cakes are being overbaked. Really regret putting so much hype on my expectation of a decadent 'ngc' as it fell flat with hard crunch, no flavor (?butter?) and lukewarm 'hard' cheese, - Was it sitting out? I dunno - but between that and a crunchy top/sides layer of brownie with a gooey inside, I couldn't finish it. This is a sweet story that needs to be told. My son-in-law, a young officer in the USAF, has been in San Antonio taking classes for the past several months. My daughter flew out to celebrate his 30th birthday. I felt badly there would be no significant celebration so I checked Yelp to find bakeries in the area. Finding Bird Bakery was a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE and NICOLE had everything to do with it! I messaged the bakery one evening and Nicole was in touch with me that night (and there's two hours difference - I live in CA)! Long story short, I coordinated a bakery pickup for my son-in-law's birthday. He had NO idea but my daughter did. They both were so happy and my daughter kept telling me, via text, "Mom, this place is SO cute!" Her husband has a big sweet tooth and loved the bakery goods and the thought!
