Excellent little store off the beaten path in San Carlos. I wish I had known about this place with my first two. Great selection of clothing, toys, maternity wear , dance gear (ballet tap etc). This review is for their maternity items. Everything was in good to like-new condition and were timeless or current styles. Most maternity clothing seemed to be priced $10-16, which can't be beat for the great condition they were in. I found cute tops, dresses, and they had med-dark wash skinny jeans. For maternity wear, this place is way way better than Lovely Bump in San Bruno at equal or better prices and very clearly organized. Love this neighborhood shop! Make sure you bring in seasonal items that are cleaned without stains. They are a business so they need to be able to make money reselling it. Expect to get about 25% of the value as they sell it for 50% of retail cost. They usually only take about 20-30% of the stuff I bring in but get about $50-60 in store credit. You can pass down or donate the rest. They have brand new stuff here too with the tags still on! I got a hat this summer and a pumping bra for my gf w the tags still on them. My review is specifically from my experience as a seller. I spoke with one of the ladies about the type of clothes I wanted to sell (3 shopping bags worth of newborn to 6 months - mostly girl and some boy and gender neutral). She said that is perfect since they were running low in that specific type of inventory. I brought them in and they sorted through them rather quickly. I came in the next day and she took only about 1/4 of one of the bags. I felt mislead. If I would have known that she wanted a more specific type of clothing, I would have brought in less - it's quite the hassle to bring in all those clothes along with my 6 month old baby into the shop. At the same time, another customer came in and picked her remaining items and was offered about 4 times the amount of store credit I was - not sure what she was selling but she only had a small amount of clothes returned to her. (I also look a lot younger than I am and wonder if they didn't take me seriously because of it) I wish there was more clarity into what they want when you are trying to sell things to them. I want to contribute to the idea of a children's consignment store and was very happy to have this one close to my home, but the customer service from the seller's perspective was a hassle and vague. A great small store packed with a well-curated selection of new and used clothing and toys for the 6 and under crowd (and pregnant moms-to-be). I am sure I was only able to see half of what's in there and I'll definitely go back as soon as my daughter grows an inch! Prices are reasonable too, considering the items are good quality and in very good condition. The play area for kids is awesome and safe, and there is a restroom with a change table. Adorable shop in the easy to park area of downtown San Carlos. Super cute inside with normal bedroom furniture serving as the clothing displays, which is quite pretty. I promised I would write an update when I went in with my consignment items. I did that today, so here it is! I love Bird In the Nest. I brought in a mix of things like my daughter's bourgeoise snow boots and mittens that she used only once when we went to Lake Tahoe in 2015. I had brought in some of my maternity clothes (I had so many kinds because I had to get a whole work wardrobe when I was pregnant!), a cute baby bag, and three fall/winter coats I had used when I was 6-9 months pregnant. I only have one little one and no plans for another, and so letting these items go takes a bit of sucking it up for me, but getting rid of things you no longer need is a good thing. It allows you to move on in life, so I find the concept of a baby and maternity consignment shop a very good thing. I looked at my winter coats when I pulled them from the closet today, and had memories of being 9 months pregnant in the dead of winter in New York City, and walking (very, very slowly, hahahaha) through the city streets in 3 degree weather with wind whipping on my face, which means it actually felt like minus 13 degrees. Good times. Those coats shielded me from that whipping cold and I looked stylish while I was at it (or that is what I told myself to make myself feel better, because every minute of every day you need to make yourself feel better at 9 months prego). Anyhow, it was an easy process. I dropped off what I brought in, they looked over everything while I ran an errand, and when I returned they gave me an option of collecting cash or getting an in-store credit, all of which I felt was fair. And, I love love love supporting a local business. I feel good that my barely used items will get a breath of new life. Cheers to new life, and cheers to Bird In the Nest. I'm a regular at Bird in the Nest, the ladies all know me and my daughter by name. They are always asking how she's doing and are so sweet. During Covid, they are open and still taking selling appointments. I am SO thankful that you can walk in and shop now, although they have started selling online as well. They generally carry a lot of my favorite brands, ZARA being one of them. Sometimes if you get lucky, you'll find a pair of freshly picked moccasins or vans crib crawlers. Was excited to come here because I heard great things, but my husband and I were disappointed by the customer service. The lady at the counter didn't even say hi when we came in nor when we walked right by her a couple times later. We weren't expecting a lot, but a simple "hi" or a smile would have been nice. There was only one other couple in the small store, so it's definitely not like she didn't notice us. I am trying to not think it had anything to do with us being Asian. Maternity clothes selection was just okay. Wanted to get a pair of jeans, but most of the items seemed to be a little outdated in terms of style--didn't see any skinny jeans, for example. It was a tiny bit cramped inside. Another customer had brought in their stroller, so that had made it a little hard to get around the store. There seemed to be a good selection of baby stuff, including a lot of clothes, toys, and carriers. Still a good store I guess in terms of what they sell and the fact that you can consign items, but we didn't feel welcome unfortunately and don't think we'd ever come back. read more

I have been shopping at Bird in the nest for the past 4+ years and I always found little treasures there! They have everything you need from newborn to big kid, from clothes to gears to toys (and maternity too!). If you don't see what you are looking for, don't be shy and ask, it might be hidden somewhere (it's a tiny place!) or they can put you on their wish list and you'll get a call as soon as your item gets in. I also sold many of my kids stuff there too, they go by appointment, so be sure to book one on time for your clothes's season as they are usually 4-6 weeks out on the calendar. read more

It's unfortunate that they don't make it easy to sell or donate. I spoke to someone on the phone that was kind enough to try to make an appointment for me to come in but due to my short timeline before my baby boy is due it didn't work out. I gave her descriptions of my high end girls clothing that wasn't worn more than once and she recommended me to come in if I had few items to see if they will take a walk in. When I came in I was turned away without my items being looked at. Was told that they aren't accepting anything that isn't seasonal. Found that quite interesting for a business model as I worked many senior roles in corporate retail for 8 years. However I left saying ok well maybe I'll see it it will work out after my son is born. I'm pregnant for the first time and starting to get enough of a bump that my regular clothes are uncomfortable! I live on the middle of the Peninsula and researched consignment stores for maternity clothes. My husband and I were not interested in paying full price for brand new items that I'll only wear for a short time! Bird in the Nest has a room dedicated to just maternity clothes. I went and found a good number of items that fit me and came out with a good dent in my new maternity wardrobe! Prices are around $6-10 for tops and around $40 for designer jeans. This was great for me because nothing broke the bank and because I'm very slim I normally have to buy designer jeans to get anything my size! In addition to a bunch of tops, I scored a beautiful pair of "like new" designer maternity jeans that fit like a glove! If you are in need of maternity clothes, definitely stop by Bird in the Nest! The only other two secondhand shops I visited that sold maternity clothes had hardly any selection. It's great to have choices from a whole room! And don't forget...if you take good care of your items you can just consign them right back at the end for trade credit to buy baby stuff there! Win win! read more

Well, if you are lucky enough to discover Bird in a nest you shout out "Hallelujah!" and attack their maternity section with glee. I came here about once a month during my pregnancy when I felt like nothing fit and I was tired of my meager wardrobe. sometimes all it takes is just one new shirt or pair of pants to make you feel like a person again and not just a baby making machine. My favorite thing that I bought here was a long, light brown sleeveless dress for $10. I paired it with a nice scarf and wore to my baby shower. Now I have lots of gorgeous photos that remind me of what a great deal I got on that dress! I was surprised that there are few, if any, negative remarks about this place, but I must comment on the poor salesmanship and manners of the lady at the counter--perhaps she is new? Yesterday, my wife and I attempted to sell a Halloween costume and a mobil. They were in pretty good condition (our kid was born in May) and to be honest, we really just wanted to donate them as we did not expect much money, but we thought we would ask. The lady had absolutely no interest in even listening to us. She was extremely dismissive and although not blatantly rude, her body language was arrogant. Mind you, I was wearing a sweatshirt and my wife some regular jeans--which may not be high end San Carlos style--but give me a break (and I apologize for going down to her level), you are a cashier at a used clothes store. There is nothing wrong with that job and its respectable, but you are not working at Neiman Marcus either. I hope the owner realizes that the store is great, but there is a poorly educated woman with terrible manners working at the cashier. read more

This is my new favorite baby store.. Is a small cozy store. It has a little bit of everything. And my favorite part of the store is the kids play area. I only been there 3 times and I don't worry when my little one wonders off.. Because I know where she's at. They have a section where is all new items. And all the used is on a separate area. It's so easy so find the size your looking for. Everything has labels and are marked. Everything is well organize. Good prices as well!! I can say I will return.. I'm glad I found this place. Love this sweet little boutique! San Carlos was really in need of a children's resale shop, so I was glad to see this open. They have become part of my new routine with updating my kids clothing, taking in what my youngest outgrows and trading it in for credit on the new size my older child needs. The selection is a little tight, but she's working on finding ways to fit more rack space. She keeps it to good quality and condition pre-loved clothing and I can generally always find enough that I'd like to purchase use up my trade-in value on the clothing I have to sell. They had used toys and brand new toys, maternity clothes, baby carriers, I have 2 boys a 5 year old and a infant, I can always find something I need for them. Super cute store, has a very nice boutique-y feel. For a consignment store, they actually don't have that large of a selection of clothing to choose from, mainly because they eat up a lot of their limited space with a play/coloring station for kids and some new boxed items in front. But the stuff that they did have were all great quality items and very reasonably priced. I was able to to snag some PJs for $2.99 and like new Crocs for $8.99 - prices comparable to Ebay or Craigslist. I haven't tried selling with them yet, but from what I understand it's 50% trade-in value towards items in the store or 30% cash (could be wrong, double check). There aren't many baby consignment stores in the area, so this is a great addition to the peninsula. read more
