I was honestly a little sad coming in and not seeing my usual barista. You get used to people, especially somewhere you go all the time. But it ended up being a really easy transition because of Amina and the rest of the team ,they're warm, they remember you, and it still feels like the same place. The coffee this week has been really good. I usually go for the single origin, but the blend they're serving right now is actually so good. Smooth, balanced, and just hits right. The music is still good (which I care about more than I probably should), and the new barista has that same energy the old baristas had really into coffee, kind of geeking out about it, which makes the whole experience feel nostalgic. Maybe my fault for getting the matcha latte when you should probably be getting a coffee but guys it literally tasted like a cup of oat milk with very oxidized matcha that's been sitting pre made for the longest time. I placed an order via TooGoodToGo to pick up a surprise bag from Bird Rock Coffee Roasters and here's what I scored... THE FOOD. - Raspberry Pop Tart. A grown-up take on a childhood classic. The buttery shortcrust was tender with a pleasant snap at the edges, cradling a tangy raspberry jam with a berry-forward taste. - Butter Croissant. Shatteringly crisp flakey layers giving way to an airy interior. The flavor is undeniably buttery. - Shortbread Cookie. Thick and pale gold, the cookie had a semi-firm bite with notes of vanilla that came through. This UCSD location near the Epstein Family Amphitheater this is convenient for students, staff, and visitors. It's like an open big concept/kiosk with ample seating nearby with umbrellas that offer shade on warmer days. I love the Sandpiper and Left Coast and all of their lattes are on point with yummy espresso! They also have assorted pastries perfect for pairing. They have friendly service and I highly recommend this Bird Rock when in the area. read more

I love that this location offers soy milk! Their Honey B Latte has quickly become my new obsession. Despite the sweet-sounding name, it's actually not too sweet, which is exactly what I prefer. I ended up routing to the next nearest Bird Rock and found the The Village location and passed by a visitor parking structure off Gilman and Russell. Bird Rock is one of my favorite coffee spots in San Diego. However, this location really is subpar as compared to the Del Mar location, as it is in a relatively closed off area with no views like the Del Mar location has. Speaking to the quality of the drinks, their lattes are amazing and quite strong. I had an iced latte with regular milk, and I nursed that drink for quite a while. They have ample room for working, as lots of students come here. There is also really easy access to other food destinations, which gives it an edge on some of the other, farther locations. read more

I've had their iced white mochas before and they were decent but this time I tried their iced vanilla bean latte and I liked it! It was pretty sweet and good and you can really taste the vanilla and it's not artificial tasting. The coffee is smooth and a good strength. I like how oat milk isn't an extra cost. Wow there's a bird rock on campus now?! Campus has gotten so nice the last few years. Their coffee is good but not sure if it's $7 good. I didn't make any modifications to my iced Honey B latte and it was $6.99. I used to go to their Torrey Pines location but don't remember it being $7. Maybe it's a good thing this wasn't here when I was a student because I'd spend so much. Honey B latte - prefect balance of cinnamon and honey. I don't normally need to mix the honey but this time it was a layer at the bottom so had to get a wooden mixer to stir it up. read more

Consistently the worst customer service every time. I am not usually one to leave a bad review or even to speak up in person about bad service but I have only had bad experiences here. I try to be as nice as I can to the service staff but today when the barista did not call out my order at all when it was ready I asked them to double check if the coffee at the counter was my order, to make sure i did not take someone else's identical order. The barista just stared at me then proceeded to laugh in my face. I should mention that the barista failed to call out my order because they were talking with the other barista about how the other barista wanted to quit this current job and complaining about drama with the management in front of the customers, loud enough for everyone to hear, which is not professional at all. read more

Let me start up by saying I am a huge bird rock coffee roasters fan. However, this location on campus is run so poorly that it gives bird rock a really bad name. Cleanliness: The open concept provides a full view of the entire bar and kitchen, and oh my gosh, the disarray of items, monster cans, and all kinds of gross stuffing laying around makes you feel like it's incredibly dirty. It looks like a teenagers dorm room, not a coffee shop. I've been to every Birdrock location and none of them look like this. It's pretty unprofessional. Staff: agree with some of the other comments, the staff here is really not welcoming or engaging. I assume their student workers, and is clear. They have zero commitment to going the extra inch to provide you good service. Again, the complete opposite feel experience compared to the other locations. Product: I typically always get a cold brew when I go to any Birdrock location. And of course, this UCSD campus had an issue with the cold brew taps that day so no cold brew. I settled with an Americano, which had zero ice by the time I got it...just watered down coffee water. Again really damaging to the bird rock brand, which strives for quality at its core. This is not quality product. I write this post to hopefully bring awareness to the management team who supports Birdrock. There needs to be a lot more attention on how this location is run. My go to coffee spot, consistent and friendly and pricing is on the higher end but worth it to me. One downside is the food is just okay.

Loved the vibe. The service was friendly. My partner got a hibiscus watermelon tea I was so shocked how delicious it was. I got an iced vanilla latte. The coffee was good. I liked their commitment to sustainability and pictures of where they source their coffee. Also the Kiswahili sign in the bathroom. read more

The coffee and pastries don't disappoint either -- I usually stick to classic espresso drinks, but I'd highly recommend their seasonal specials. Bird Rock recently opened another one of their locations right here on the UCSD campus. It's a little stand in between the Design and Innovation Building (DIB) and the Epstein Family Amphitheatre. It's next to the UCSD Central Campus trolley station, so there's plenty of parking at the Gilman Parking Structure and the parking structures along the Blue Line Extension (this is me telling you to take the blue line). I've noticed them open for quite a while, but decided to stop by this morning for a Left Coast Latte. It's a beautiful little stand and there's outdoor seating! It's a great place to work, as some of my classes have held office hours here, but do keep in mind that it gets quite cold and there's no outlets. I ordered my Left Coast Latte (salted caramel vibes) for about $6, and it came out in around 5 minutes. Are these prices sustainable for the student population though? The taste was really good, and on-par with Bird Rock's other locations! Extra points for the cute latte art :) Overall, my experience was great. The layout of the store was perfectly fit for this campus and conveniently located for students, staff, and visitors alike. Let's build more walkable cafes and make use of the MTS Blue Line extension. read more

A staple to go to for the morning coffee while on campus as most others coffee carts overcharge and the quality does not match up. Yet at bird rock you can get the quality and friendliness that is expected of their chain. As it's in an open area it can be a little chilly on a cold day or hot on a sunny day. read more

I'll start by saying I never leave reviews, just not my jam typically. But I really appreciated the barista checking in as he was making my half caf americano. I cut down the caffeine intake as it gets later in the day and he let me know their version would still be equivalent to a full at most other cafes, then offered to customize it unprompted. alright so i ordered the iced matcha latte and it was pretty good. but it was different from all of the other matcha lattes i've ever had because this used oat milk. i rly liked it though because it gave it a nice nutty flavor. (first time having oak milk too). o and the matcha flavor was really nice too. didn't taste like pure milk, but you can really taste that matcha "bitterness" if yk what i mean. and the drink does come with two things of syrup, but i probably could've went for another since it wasn't sweet enough to my liking. but if u don't like sweetness like that, the regular sweetness is prob enough for u. but a guy like me just has a sweet tooth. but yeah i'll think the matcha enthusiasts would like this, ESPECIALLY if u like oat milk since it's a pretty prominent flavor in this. but if you don't like oat milk, just ask for a replacement and i'm sure you'll still like this. oh and i gotta say man, it didn't have that gritty and powdery feel that most matches have. they really doin it right here bruh. and i also gotta say the service here was really good too. the girl who took my order was very nice. nicely greeted me and was happy to answer my questions about the drink. also saw her make it right in front of me since it's an open view type thing. it only took like a minute or two for it to come out, despite it being pretty packed when i went, so yeah overall service was impeccable man. but ya solid matcha. read more

I've literally never had a bad interaction with the folks here! The baristas are excellent and always deliver quality coffee. Their espresso is always perfectly dialed in and the milk drinks are always done well. The prices are on the higher side, but they're using excellent coffee and dairy (Straus), and they take their time making sure the results in the cup are worth the price. Sometimes this means waiting while they re-dial their espresso but I am always OK with this. If you're in a rush, their batch brewed drop coffee is always excellent, fast, and reasonably priced. Overall this place has been a great addition to the UCSD coffee landscape. read more

Honestly after my last experience here I will not be coming back here which is really sad to me because it's so convenient to where my classes are. First the coffee is good but in my opinion it's not worth the money. I got an almond latte here a little while ago and it was eight dollars for a really small size. Second the customer service here is horrible. I have never had a positive experience with a worker at this location. One time I asked a worker here what they suggest and they literally said to me "how would I know what you want?"I thought that was a pretty rude response and usually when I go to other coffee places they suggest me what's popular on the menu or what they the workers personally like. When I went to get an almond croissant the other day the person working at the counter pressured me to tip her. When I didn't she gave me a dirty look and huffed under her breath because I didn't tip her. While I like their almond croissants here it's not worth it to go here where I am always treated with no respect. read more

Reviewing as a daily visitor of Bird Rock coffee roasters at this location. Every single employee here is friendly, helpful, and dedicated to their patrons. I see many people commenting about expense. Unlike most things in life, at Bird Rock you get what you pay for. The espresso is sweet, rich, and creamy with a depth of coffee flavor. The fantastic coffee taste is what makes Bird Rock the best coffee roaster in SD. In this particular location, the employees try to make your coffee exactly how you expect it to taste. I have personally witnessed three of the baristas "re-pulling" shots of espresso when the espresso doesn't come out perfectly, which is more than you can say about most baristas around (especially compared to the pop-up coffee stands around campus providing coffee-flavored water). I also see people commenting negatively about the customer service. I have never seen any of the baristas acting poorly to anyone, and I believe that some people truly create their own misery. My only complaint about this location is that it isn't open on the weekends. read more
