The first thing that strikes me as odd is that, even though this restaurant has over 600 reviews and an average of 4 stars, there are only about 100 pictures. What is the meaning of this. Do Los Angeleans not like taking pictures of their food? Yelpers will know that pictures do aid us in deciding what to order. Maybe because it's pretty dark inside?? Anyway, we found this spot after a failed attempt at visting the observatory. Since it had good yelp reviews and the highlights sounded tasty, we were quite excited. First off, I had a sorbet spritzer (alcoholic drink) while waiting for our table. It tasted like medicine. Then,all of a sudden, a big group came in and just sat down at the table that was being cleaned for us. My hunky man was about to go beat up on them, but I pleaded for him to refrain, as I thought that they were on the list before us. Well, the host came back to the host table and said that they were not in fact on the list, and that it was "his mistake." So note to yourself: you gotta be proactive in staking your seat because the hosts don't help you with that. And now to the worst part--the food. Do not get the white chicken. It is dry. However, the dark chicken is moist. At any rate you can get comparable chicken at the hot food section of Costco for a better value. The chicken itself was nothing short of un-amazing. We got the chipotle dipping sauce, which also came with the big stack of onion rings that we shared among three people. The onion ring appetizer was huge, and probably the only decent thing we ate. The chipotle dipping sauce that came with our chicken tasted different from the chipotle dipping sauce that came with our onion rings. The former tasted strongly of mayonnaise (GAHHHH!!!) and the latter was quite spicy. CONSISTENCY. Is not what this establishment has. Oh god but the sides, THE SIDES!!! Disgusting. The mac and cheese looked and tasted like it came straight out of a Kraft box--dry, hard, and stuck together with low grade fake cheese...ugh, I shudder at the memory. And the garlic mashed potatoes likewise tasted as if the kitchen had merely opened up a packet and "just add water"-ed it. We couldn't even tolerate to finish it (and we usually do our best to finish our food). The BBQ dipping sauce is good but don't think it was some special house recipe-- we saw big jugs of KC Masterpiece on top of the fridge. To top it off, our server charged the wrong amount to my bro's credit card. So please keep your receipts until the charge clears. He will be filing a claim with his credit card company. This place is what you fear most: a waste of calories and a waste of money. If you need a place to hang out before the comedy show next door, have some beer. This little strip of Franklin is probably one of the busiest blocks in the city. There's multiple restaurants as well as the UCB along with a cafe and book store. The traffic is always backed up and the valet has a long line usually waiting. And street parking, forget about it. On nights the UCB has a show there's a huge line filling the sidewalk and stretching down the block. Birds is located near the corner in a bright red building with an even brighter awning stretching over the sidewalk. I've driven by a million times on my way to the 101 and I usually get trapped behind traffic and I get to sit and stare at this block of restaurants for several minutes. I like the idea of a restaurant that serves just chicken and, rightfully so, is called Birds. I finally came here with a friend for dinner one Friday night around 10pm. By some act of god I was able to find street parking a couple blocks away up in the hills. The place was completely packed but the weather was perfect so we opted to sit outside. We were given a tiny table right against the railing before the sidewalk. Of course, there was a show at the UCB next door so the sidewalk was completely filled. But we were just happy to have a table (it was the last one table left). The menu has, surprise surprise, a bunch of chicken dishes but to start out I went with the mozzarella sticks and marinara. The strips were thick and fried perfectly without loosing the cheesy goodness on the inside. The marinara was great too! For my entree I got the crispy chicken tender sandwich (with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, dill pickle, and fries). It would have seemed criminal to go to a place called BIRDS and not have chicken. The sandwich was huge and the serving of fries was as well. The chicken was juicy and delicious and the crispy outside gave just the right amount of crunch. Birds has a really fun vibe and reminds me a lot of old Hollywood. The inside dining room is dimly lit with red Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling, red walls, and a fully loaded bar. And, of course, the place wouldn't be complete without a handful of Hitchcock paintings with ravens scattered around! read more

If you like Rotisserie Chicken, this is the place to check out. They are known for their rotisserie chicken. You can choose what part of the chicken that comes with tortilla: white meat, dark meat, whole chicken, and half chicken. You can choose one side dish: salad, french fries, sauteed vegetables, mash potatoes, etc. Last and most importantly is the dipping sauce that comes with the chicken: chipotle, garlic aioli, ranch, bbq, etc. I ordered the half dark meat for only $11. The food portion that comes out was a good side. The chicken was cooked moist enough so that it is easy to pull. But I just wish it had more seasoning like salt or pepper and it was served hot. I'm glad the dish does come with a dipping sauce or I would be very disappointed. The ambience is colorful and a great place to sit outside on a nice warm day. So, I lived in this Hollywood area way back in the day, around 14 years ago - 2004. I would eat at Birds religiously - specifically their rotisserie chicken and the Onion Rings. Here it is, 2018, and I'm in the area visiting. I HAVE to go back as I can almost TASTE the Onion rings in my mouth even after all this time. I go back in and order the half chicken with the artichoke aoli dip and the Onion Rings with the (whatever dip, can't remember...its orange colored). Get back home to Burbank...heat it up a little (in the oven, cant microwave Onion Rings...cmon now)...and BAM! Same amazing taste! Same quality. I love you Birds. I really do. I really can appreciate any place of business that doesn't fall off over time. You can just depend on it to deliver. Awesome. read more

Came on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm. It was a gorgeous day so we sat outside. Great place to bring your dog and for people watching. The Service --- Service was great. Sometimes when you sit outside, your server is less attentive. Not the case here! Our server was friendly and took good care of us. The Food --- Unfortunately, the food was average. The exception was the onion rings. They were pretty amazing. Great texture and flavor and not too greasy. Probably the best onion rings I've had! Got the ranch, bbq and garlic artichoke sauces with the rings. I liked the ranch best with it. We also got the 1/2 rotisserie chicken with baked beans and chipotle mayo. Chipotle mayo was good as were the baked beans. The beans had a good flavor. The chicken was just okay. Nothing spectacular. Not really all that juicy, but not super dry. Taste was okay. We also got the crispy chicken caesar wrap with curly fries. Wish they had put some seasoning on the fries. The sauces helped. The chicken in the wrap was good but there wasn't enough dressing on it. Could barely taste it. The Prices --- Prices were okay. Beers are cheap. Coronas for $4 and Bud Lights for $3. Foot of onion rings were $8 (totally worth it), 1/2 chicken with baked beans was $11 and the wrap was $10 plus $.75 for the fries. LOVE LOVE LOVE this little restaurant/bar. When first moving to LA this was my favorite neighborhood hang out. The food is good, service is always friendly and there is always a hoppin crowd. I especially want to give a shout out to the bartenders. They have all been working here for a while and always seem to be in great moods when I'm there. Thanks for the service with a smile guys! After taking in a Kimmel taping I was looking for a place to get my grub on. Didn't want to drive too far and wasn't looking for something too exotic and remembered about Birds. Just a hop skip and a jump from Hollywood and Highland I almost drove past the place as I didn't see any signs as they were either not turned on or wasn't working. Parking was a pain as it was late and there really was no street parking, so I just parked at the market nearby and bought a pack of gum. As we walked in the place was smaller than I thought, but in a cozy way. Decor was loud but mellow and the music was blazing with classic, punk and contemporary rock... nice, I like it. The waitress was helpful, accommodating and took care of everything we needed. The menu has pretty decent variety for a chicken place with the usual appetizers and sides (onion rings, mozzarella sticks, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes). The signature rotisserie was surprisingly good and moist and comes with your choice of dipping sauce. I recommend the chipotle mayo and the artichoke-garlic mayo they go great with the onion rings, hmmmm. Overall this place has a great feel and some pretty decent food. I'd recommend happy hour Wednesday and Thursday nights as all libations are half off. Its right next door to the UCB and makes a good pre or post food stop. read more

Every time I have driven past Birds, I always noticed a crowd outside of the place. It always seemed poppin, so it piqued my curiosity, which led me to do my Yelp research. It turns out, Birds is a fun, sociable bar that offers above par bar food and juicy rotisserie chicken at affordable prices. Ambiance/Decor: If you're looking for a quiet, intimate setting at night, then Birds is not your best option. It's casual and loud. Sometimes it may even be difficult to hear the person next to you. I actually had a sore throat by the end of my meal. Food: 4 stars**** 1) Appetizer Sampler - onion rings, fried mozzarella, poppers, chicken strips, 3 dipping sauces. Standard appetizer sampler. My favorites were the onion rings and the poppers. 2) Rotisserie Chicken was juicy and flavorful! It's definitely worth the price. It was the only non heavy item I ate here. Sides: 1) BBQ Baked beans were surprisingly good! I had no expectations because I've been disappointed so many times. It had a good balance of savory and sweet. 2) Coleslaw was pretty good. Love this place!!! So cozy and friendly - like a neighborhood hideaway you could come every Thursday. I don't even like chicken on the bone but the dark meat chicken here is absolutely delicious!!! The 1/4 chicken with two sides is $9.00. I got the mac n'cheese and baked beans. The M n' C was a bit dry/non-creamy/separated but the baked beans were lovely! FOOD: For appetizers we had the tower of onion rings. They came perfectly cooked, not too hot, and melted in your mouth. I have eaten at Birds a lot over the past few years as it seems to be a favorite among friends. I have tried a wide range of their menu from salads to wraps but the best thing to order in my opinion, is the plain ole chicken. Whether you like white or dark meat or 1 side dish or 2 side dishes this is the perfect meal for me. The rotisserie chicken is juicy with a crispy/crunchy skin. Yummy! For a sit down restaurant the atmosphere is more hip and interesting than a California Chicken Cafe. I would have to rate their chicken a smidge behind the California Chicken Cafe's but if you are looking for ambience I would choose Birds over CCC. One thing you can do at Birds over the CCC is order beer and cocktails and THAT is a major plus! As far as the chicken meals go, I usually order the 1/4 white meat with one side. I have gotten 2 sides before and it was too much food for me. I usually alternate my visits by getting the yummy mac n cheese, a ceasar salad or a regular salad. The meal also comes with a pita type bread and oh, before I forget, the chicken comes with side sauces. They have a great selection of side sauces so don't forget to check those out before you place an order. The juicy chicken dunked in one of their sauces is just plain ole swell! Birds is usually a hopping place so it's more of a noisy dining situation but it's really great with friends cuz you can be as noisy as you want with friends! Wait staff is hit or miss. Now here comes the disclaimer about parking. That particular street is ALWAYS busy and it's always hard to find parking so basically all I can say to you, is good luck! I'm not sure how much it's changed, but the entire time I used to go at night, I never knew this place was actually a restaurant. FInally, I went during the day time and had the chicken there. If you love chicken, this is your place. They've mastered the art of chicken here. So many different options. I came for brunch and enjoyed the fried chicken and waffles. The chicken was the star. They have everything from fried chicken to rotisserie chicken. My boyfriend really enjoyed their fried chicken tenders tossed in buffalo sauce with a side of fries. They have great happy hour deals here. Mon-Fri 4-6, and then they have late night happy hour wed and thurs from 11pm-12am. Ladies night is Friday night. Street parking available. read more

AMBIANCE Mostly a Hollywood hipster crowd, but a very casual ambiance and vibe. They have this huge Jenga game that we ended up playing for about 3 hours straight! It was a lot of fun :) PRICES Decent and typical prices for drinks. They accept credit/debit cards. They have ladies night on Friday nights with special prices on drinks! As for cover, my fiance and I walked in around 10 PM on a Friday night and there was no cover. PARKING SUCKS! But I'm not surprised b/c it's located in the busy Hollywood Hills area. After circling the block a couple times, I came across some street parking. They also have valet parking for your convenience, but not sure what the price is. TO SUM THINGS UP I would come back, we definitely had a great time. We stayed until the very end and it didn't even feel like we were there for that long! This place was really nice all in all, we found this place after our hike at the cahuenga peak and the wisdom tree and also on our way to the Griffith Observatory. We were super hungry, and the food really satisfied our stomach. Food: the chicken reminds me of Sardis chicken back on the east coast in the DMV area, very tender and cooked just right (dark meat all around for me, I got half chicken with sour cream baked potatoes) unfortunately my phone died, so i couldn't take pictures of the heavenly chicken I had. Service: Our waiter was attentive and friendly (and he was a eye candy, lol) both me and my boyfriend agreed. He reminded us of our old roommate. Price: very reasonable, 10 dollar for the half chicken and one side. Atmosphere: Chill and relaxing, great for drinking and eating with friends, also have outdoor dining. Food was bad, but service was great. We came here for lunch while we dropped our dog off at the groomers. Not a mistake we will make again. I had the blandest bean salad ever made with hard lettuce. I asked for feta cheese to help add flavor and the cheese was hard- like I needed a knife to cut it. My boyfriend had the wings, which came undercooked, and very stale cold fries that had zero flavor. Honestly probably the worst fries either of us have ever had. I'm assuming they were just left in the cooker from the night before and then served to us without even heating them up. I mean at least throw some salt on them, put them in the microwave and pretend like you made them today. But seriously, our server was fantastic. A dark place, and quite cozy, with comfy booths and niches you can wedge yourself in for the duration, so that's a good thing, right? I've just never had a good time here, which is a total mystery to me, because Birds makes all the right moves. The food is passable to good, the curly fries are fun, and would make fashionable earrings if they weren't hot and likely to burn your neck; the desserts are sweet and satisfying. So that's all good. The specific problem for me, I've figured out, lies with the customers. Without customers, this would be one of my favorite local hang-outs. The crowd is noisy and youthful, mostly because the Upright Citizens Brigade theatre is close by and I guess people feel they need to be tanked up simply to get through one of their performances. The appeal of improv - another baffling mystery. However, drunkenness is not the issue. Birds is a restaurant-bar after all. But it's the kind of place where people feel exceedingly comfortable shouting and screaming, and to hell with everyone else. Last time I went in, a fairly benign-looking young guy was at the bar, sitting quietly. Suddenly, he began yelling so loudly at the TV that you'd think Katy Perry had just walked in, or an army helicopter was going overhead and he was trying to drown it out. I honestly had to leave. Many other times I've had problems enjoying my food simply because of customers yelling and laughing exaggeratedly, like animatronic clowns. Totally baffling. Who are these people? I wonder if I called ahead, whether they'd clear the place before I got there. Just for an hour or so. Then I could enjoy it in peace. I am torn about Birds. Actually I would give this place a 3.5. Don't get me wrong, I liked my dining experience here. It sits in a very cute area neighboring a bookstore, some other restaurants, and shops. The food was very enjoyable and I loved their menu options when it came to dipping sauces, sides, etc. It was a bit too noisy for my liking, as I generally walk the other way when it comes to crowded sports bars. The interior was nicely decorated. Parking may be a bit tough. You are limited to shelling out the money for valet, or just searching around for residential street parking. My brother, his girlfriend, my husband and I came here in the late afternoon for a small meal. It was pretty busy as it's next to the Upright Citizens Brigade theater and a show had just let out. Waitstaff was attentive, brought our orders out fast and comfortable seating in the booths made it easy for 4 ppl to talk amongst ourselves. I had their summer salad - a large bed of field greens, sundried tomatoes, sliced tomatoes, kalamata olives, other fresh veggies and feta cheese....A LOT of feta cheese. Had I known, I would have asked them to put the cheese on the side. Found myself navigating around the cheese to get to the other items in the salad. The vinaigrette was good, though I did ask for that on the side. My husband got chicken chili with sweet corn bread which he says was very good. It's listed as an appetizer, though is plenty for a hearty light meal. My brother got the tacos and his girlfriend got red potatoes which they shared. They both said their dishes were good, too. This place gets busy at night as the bar fills up with LA hipsters and the like. Parking can be tricky, too, but look for spaces up and around the corner near the houses. In this area frequently for business. Staying down the street. Went to get some late night grub. Place busy, but many open tables. Hostess says, How many? I respond, Just me. She looks around the restaurant, turns to me and says, It'll be a 10-15 minute wait. I step aside. Others coming in after me, parties of 3-4-5, get seated immediately. Hostess continues to ignore me, and i'm thinking, Does she want me to leave? Clearly i'm not hip enough. Just a working taxpayer. Definitely a friendly, fun place with a bustling crowd. We came after going to an improv show at upright citizens brigade for a drink. Everyone was happy with their drinks all around. I found my dirty martini to be a little salty but my friend found hers to be not salty enough. read more
