I frequent this bakery about once a month to treat myself to coffee and a pastry, but I met a friend here for lunch last week. We had such a nice time, and the wait staff were so friendly! I got the pizza slice of the day, which was actually 2 slices, a latte, and a cream cheese danish! Everything was so fresh and well-made. The two women that helped me and were so kind were Savannah and a shorter, blonde woman with bangs whose name I didn't catch. Pretty neat place that's a good spot for a low key quiet lunch. I got the Magic City Ranch salad for my wife and I to split. Not too much to it but a good value for under $5. We also got the Bham sandwiches and that was my favorite part of the meal. The spicy beer mustard really has a kick to it and complemented the ham and cheese nicely. Bread tasted very fresh and made it a good sandwich. My only downfall was the sides. I was thinking sandwiches would come with chips or pasta salad or something but it's just popcorn. A nice local bakery. I have gone by twice now to buy a whole loaf of sourdough bread for only $8! It is fresh and delicious. The reason I gave 4/5 stars is because today I tried their 'Meat' pizza. I was terribly disappointed. The crust was too thin and crunchy. There were hardly any toppings at all. However, they do give you 2 slices in the deal. I will return to buy more bread and to try their pastries, but I will not be purchasing any meals. read more

I really enjoy the bread, but I think they have some work to do on their customer service. The bread is quite sophisticated and I'm a sophisticated bread eater. I like to ask questions. The people running the register have been disinterested in the bread altogether. Additionally, the coffee is toasted on-site. When I've asked about the coffee, I've been told, " I don't drink coffee. " Well, you sell coffee roasted in your facility so bone up on the details. Decided to try Birmingham Breadworks today for lunch. I am extremely impressed but angry at myself that I have not tried this place until now. I tried the Bacon Gouda and Rosemary Pizza slice and tomato soup. Both very tasty. I was also extremely tempted to try one of the daily pastries however I resisted (maybe next time). Cute little bread shop located downtown in the heart of Southside. There's ample seating and the atmosphere is usually pretty quiet, which is really nice. I haven't had much from here besides the Cinnamon roll and the Almond croissant/frangipane. However, I do want to say, the Almond croissant/frangipane here is phenomenal. I don't think I've ever had anything similar from anywhere else that compares and I'm from the west coast where the options are endless. I have been here once for lunch and a few more times for a desert to go. My lunch was good and I will return again for lunch but the five stars is all about that cake bout that cake bout the cake! Chocolate cake, hummingbird cake, carrot cake! If you can make a cake out of it then this place has done it and done it very well! While all of those were good, I think my favorite was the hummingbird. People say the monkey bread is awesome, especially early in the morning when still warm. Call ahead the day before to make sure of availability. The service is superb, really friendly, helpful, and attentive. When I had lunch they noticed I was done with my pizza and brought my cake out to me. I thought I was going to have to go back to the counter to get it (due to the set up) but they were taking care of me, even during busy lunch time. read more

So....I just don't know about this. Uuumm....well. Anyways. We decided to try Birmingham Breadworks after a Dr. appointment. Initially we came here for a Reuben because their website says one of the Breads of the Day is Pumpernickel Rye...which is our favorite to have a Reuben on. Get there and they no longer have Reuben sandwiches or dark rye bread. So then we decided since we hadn't eaten today to go ahead and get today's special...The Roast Beef of Farmhouse Sourdough. Upon arrival of our food to the table, there were not any chips on the plate, but popcorn. Uuuumm...okay. I looked around and noticed everyone had popcorn with their sandwiches. The sandwich would've been better had the crust on the bread not been so hard, but it is a sourdough, so that'd be expected, especially since it's paninni pressed. Next there was very little meat on there. So, I get it....roast beef is a bit more expensive. Now, the main complaint....the popcorn was good...if it were by itself as a snack, not served with a sandwich. It was off-putting for sure. Trying to navigate the sandwich without popcorn kernels sticking to the sandwich as you take bites...oh good grief! Then whilst chewing biting down on that....could've broken a tooth. Imagine trying to fish that outta your mouth full of sandwich. So, off the personal pan pizza tray it was served on the popcorn kernels had to go. Didn't like having to pick out kernels so I gave up the popcorn to the hubby (he was equally confused, but ate the popcorn after his sandwich. The sandwich was a 5 out of 10...maybe. I've bought better tasting meat from Wal-Mart pre-packaged Hillshire Farms. Onions on it were pickled and just okay. I had them put regular onions on mine. Nonetheless, the whole experience was just as strange as the other peoplein there who didnt seem too effected by the popcorn. I did notice most people throwing away the popcorn. I'll visit another sandwich establishment next time. OH! I wanted a refill of tea before leaving and in to-go cups. They said they had to charge for refills and drinks to go. The drinks ($2.50 each)came in a very small glass overfilled with ice. The tea was mint flavored btw. 5 sips and it was gone. Didn't have enough to get through half of the sandwich! Luckily they had a cold water dispenser there and we got water to finish off with. The hubby gave me his tea as he despises anything mint flavored unless its gum or a peppermint. Surprisingly they didn't charge for water. I'm sure their breads and pastries are very good, but maybe they should stick to just being a bakery or something. The cost was $29 before tax. Monkey Bread so full of calories but also so full of yummy goodness here. The lunch option was a bit mystifying for me as I ordered soup and sandwich but was not given an option to choose my type of bread, and then total didn't add up to what I expected to pay - but it was $1-2 difference so whatever. The chicken salad sandwich was really quite good and tomato soup bisque was on point. Right across from the VA clinic. Can get busy during prime lunch hour. Birmingham Breadworks is a top-notch bakery, offering pastries, pizza, breads, sandwiches and soups. We always come here for breakfast when we're in the area. They have excellent biscuits, croissants, and avocado toast. The coffee here is also very good -- I recommend the caramel macchiato. They have a large indoor area for seating and some tables outside. Bham Breadworks has quickly become one of my favorite local spots. Their baked goods are delicious and sell out pretty quickly in the mornings, rightfully so. I love their breads whether it's served as their avocado toast, or I'm taking a loaf home for myself. Do yourself a favor and try the pepper Parmesan loaf, cheesy nutty delicious game changer. Rosalie's in Las Vegas, is as good for most things but the ham and cheese Croissant at Birmingham Breadworks is the best we have ever had. Thank God they are an hour away. I've always driven past this place, but never stopped by until today. We decided to go on a whim after stopping by Pepper Place. We were there for lunch and ordered some lunch special sandwiches, I had "the bham" along with an order of their New Orleans red beans and rice. Their sandwiches were awesome! I really enjoyed them and would suggest getting "the bham" if you're unsure what to get (seems like their most vanilla one). I noticed they had a lot of cool side orders like avocado toast, I didn't try them this time but will definitely be back to try some of them next time. The red beans and rice were very normal to me, I thought it was a little bland for my taste but overall not terrible. The prices felt like everything was priced a dollar too high, but not overly excessive. Service-wise, the employees were all very nice. They even gifted my friend a bag of chips. The place seems like a great place to study with a lot of space and quiet (with some white noise) atmosphere. Basic. I came in and ordered the Alabama Bird sandwich. It has deli sliced turkey and avocado. It's your standard turkey sandwich with hard bread. The bread has a good taste it's just kind of tough to chew. I might would try a pastry here for breakfast sometime, but I'd skip it for lunch going forward. Just too plain jane for me. We were looking for a place to get a quick bite for lunch. I am glad I don't live in this city or I would be in a carb coma from going here too much. We shared a plain croissant which was flaky deliciousness and a B'Ham panini. So good. It's simple (ham, melted cheese, and german style mustard) but the good things in life are simple. You can tell the ingredients they use are high quality and it's just good stuff. They also had a ton of desserts that looked amazing but will have to wait till next time. When we went the place was rather empty and there was tons of space if people want to stay a while and do work/hang out. The pizza slice of the day (which was actually 2 nice sized slices) were delicious. There were two choices & I picked the pepperoni. The crust was so crisp and flavorful. The pepperoni was in small chunks and so good. The fruity good greens salad was topped with candied pecans and strawberry slices. I do feel like the salad portion could have been more generous for $4.25, but hard to complain when it was so tasty. The atmosphere of BB was inviting. There were people meeting for lunch and people working alone. I was reading while eating lunch and enjoyed all of the natural lighting. The glass case with tasty treats looked amazing. FINALLY!! Good things come to those that wait. And this was so worth the wait. Cory's breads and pastries have always been some of the best around and they are all here and now available everyday. He just started serving lunch and all I can say is wow! We had the pizza and soup special with cauliflower pesto and pastachio pizza and carrot curry soup. Soup was rustic style with little bits of carrot still floating around and topped with creame freche. So wonderful. Pizza was off the chain good. I love this spot. It is delicious. They have so many pastry varieties and quite frankly you can't go wrong with any of them. The staff are super friendly and they sell pastry by the boxes so you can go in and pick from a lovely assortment of danishes, croissants and cinnamon rolls among other delectable things as well should you happen to want to share. They also have freshly baked breads and make sandwiches with these breads which is just delicious. The freshly baked options are varied and worth the visit. I like to grab pastries and go to my moms to share with the folks on the weekend sometimes and I love that it's downtown and is close to me. I do recommend going in the morning as the options dwindle as the day goes on. read more

I am a frequent visitor to this place. I noticed only recently that there are hidden charges that they don't mention anywhere. The menu showed that avocado toast was $6.50 only later did I realize that they charged $6.50 for the toast plus $2.00 for avocado spread. I think it is ridiculous to pay $8.50 for two little pieces of toast with a little spread of avocado. They also charged an extra $1.00 for the oat milk in cappuccino that I ordered which some stores do, but they tell you beforehand so you know what to expect. I placed a 'to go' order of two pastries and was charged an additional $0.35 each for the paper they were wrapped in. Yes, it does not look like much, but it adds up. It also irritates me because the business we need to support wants to nickel and dime customers with hidden charges. If they are only interested in making money, I suggest charging a door fee of $0.50 for using their door, a service fee of $2.00 per item for taking customers order, a table usage fee of $1.00 per person and don't forget additional fee for any utensils or napkins used. read more

Birmingham Breadworks is a great place for breakfast or lunch. Conveniently located near the interstate, there is plenty of parking outside and lots of comfortable seating inside. The menu options are unique and diverse. We enjoyed sharing an order of the avocado toast and pimiento cheese toast (that bread/yummm!), and the coffee and kambucha were terrific as well. I was loyal to another local bakery and didn't give Birmingham Breadworks the credit it deserves but man, does it deserve it. It's a simple bakery that doesn't offer a ton of variety but in that lies their strength. It's like they're able to focus on perfecting what they do which is why I enjoy their pastries and bread so much. This is a really cute bakery with pretty good food. I got the Alabama bird and the ingredients were pretty fresh. Their menu looks really great and I want to try their pizza and breakfast options! It's slightly pricy, about $9 a sandwich and $4.50 a slice but it's very good and you get a pretty large sandwich. The atmosphere is really laid back. It seems like a good place to eat, study or just talk. The location is good, kind of on the edge of downtown Birmingham. I will definitely be back! read more
