Cool place. Danish is light, fresh and flaky. It sorta makes up for my disappointment from hearing I couldn't order the soup and sandwich I had my heart set on from the pictures. They are opened until 5:30 but the kitchen closes at 2 pm per the young lady that waited on me. I had to pick from cookies or danishes. Cafe Mocha was delicious too. I really like Birmingham Breadworks. The food is always good. My go to is the Vulcan Veggie and the fruity good greens salad. Although the options are limited what they do have is good. I just wish they were open for dinner too. I have yet to try their breakfast but plan to do so. Their pastries are good as well- beware although good the chocolate cake is SUPER RICH. Every time I stop by Birmingham Breadworks, I literally want to eat all of the breads, cookies, and pastries in front of me. The scent of the storefront alone is intoxicating for gluten lovers. I'm also a fan of the yummy lunch and caffeinated offerings too. Their French baguette, cheese danish, and granola bar are three of my favorite baked goods! All of the soup, sandwich, salad, and pizza selections are yummy. They also generally have a few vegan or vegetarian options available too. I'm now stopping by at least once a week to get fresh bread and pastries to take home. The staff is always very helpful whenever I questions about menu specials and prompt with getting orders out to customers. Overall, I'm a big fan and highly recommend Birmingham Breadworks to people looking for a great lunch spot or fresh bread to take home. In my opinion, each visit is worth the trek. read more

Everytime I drop by, I leave more impressed. I was debating where to go for a lunch date and realized my SO had not been yet! I knew he just had to check it out! It was lunch, but no matter what I get the tomato soup. It's the best one I've ever had! I was debating between pizza and the Vulcan sandwich( both veggie) and went with the pizza. I have had their pizza before (thanks to a friend who used to work here), but today, it hit the spot! My pizza was perfect. Broccoli was cooked to perfection and wasn't super chewy! The roasted tomatoes' sweetness was divine. The soup was great, like always. Everything was perfect. I even asked for a slice of bread to dip in my soup. I love Birmingham Breadworks! It's basically better quality local Panera. I really love the Vulcan Veggie sandwich. It is a vegetarian option which I love, even though I'm not vegetarian. The grilled portabello and goat cheese is such a lovely combination. I also am obsessed with their ham and cheese croissants - so gooey, fresh, and savory! Breadworks has plenty of seating, free Wi-Fi, and an awesome selection of freshly baked goods to choose from. There is a little bit of parking in the back if you are going on a week day. I cannot believe that I have not written a review of BBW (no, that does not sound right) before today. Luckily for me, I work within walking distance of Breadworks and find it to be a great addition to the area and a spot for a quick healthy lunch. Whether I go with their standard soups, soup of the day, pizza (veggie or meat), or grab some bread to go, I have nearly always been 100% happy. I love that I can pair the fruity good greens with pizza or soup and it not cost an arm and a leg. The combination of strawberries, fantastic creamy blue cheese and candied pecans almost makes the salad seem unhealthy and while it may have some calories, I convince myself they are good calories. I also love to grab a loaf to take home and they are always willing to slice it up if asked. The pastries, cookies, etc. are always great too, my only issue is they are sometimes out of what I thought I wanted when I stop by but I can typically always find a great replacement (love the monkey bread and cookies). I have only ever had one hiccup there and it was instantly rectified by staff who frankly went a little beyond the required remedy. That is why you will find me eating lunch here when compared with other local establishments as they really seem to want to make you leave happy. read more

I'm obsessed with the cinnamon roll at Birmingham Breadwork! It is perfectly cooked, slightly flaky, lots of cinnamon, and a generous amount of icing on the top. It's also slightly larger then my fist which is a perfect size pastry in my opinion. Birmingham Breadworks is a bakery/sandwich shop that we first learned about at Pepper Place Market. Five of us visited on a Saturday afternoon. I had the orange and crimson sandwich which is toasted with pimento cheese, chipotle, lettuce and their delicious breadworks bread. We also had their creamy corn and basil soup and their Alabama Bird sandwich with Boar's Head roasted turkey, tomato, arugula and avocado. I have mixed feelings about BBW... but I'll break it down for ya into bullet points for easy-readin': THE GOOD * The smell- Ah-maz-ing. I mean, IT IS a bread shop. They ARE baking fresh bread constantly. It is heavenly just to walk in the door. * The bread- really, really good! They obviously know what they're doing. * The people here are very kind and easy to talk to. The guy taking our order was more excited about bread than anybody I've ever met. * The price (of the bread only) - you can get a loaf of really good, fresh-baked bread for a decent price THE OTHER STUFF * The decor is... homely. Not exciting. Not rustic. Not comfy. Just... existent. It looks like it's halfway through renovation or something. * The price (of the "meal" food)- you'll pay $8 for two slices of bread with avocado on them. Yes, they are good... but I'm not sure they are $8 good. All in all- our visit was pleasant and I now know where to go if I want some fresh bread- but I wouldn't go back for a "meal", per se. read more

What a great experience for one of our first restaurant visits post-vaccination. Well social-distanced, scratch food that was high quality - everything was tasty. We had monkey bread, salmon toast and pimiento toast. The amounts were plenty - couldn't eat it all (but others could probably!) but wanted to. If you are a coffee drinker I was SUPER happy to find they served french press standard & used real cream (I like a splash). Cool and quaint spot downtown that my wife and I stopped in before hitting the road for a quick weekend getaway. She ordered the Avocado toast and I ordered the PB & banana toast. Both were tasty and quite honestly, filling servings for breakfast. Not like waffle house, stuffed and want to get back in the bed filling. A healthy, energy-supplying, get my day started filling! I think Birmingham Breadworks has some of the best bread in the area and it is affordable too! Their pastries are wonderful and their cookies are so delicious it's upsetting. I have been there twice now: once for breakfast and lunch (I got caught up in a good book) and the second time just for lunch. Their pain au chocolat reminded me of the ones I had when I went to Europe and they offer to warm it (a service that you will not regret). Their Vulcan Veggie sandwich (I had it twice) is delicious and extremely reasonable in price. The only thing about the sandwich is they changed the breads from brioche to sourdough without letting the customers know. For the type of sandwich it was, the type of bread matters and I probably wouldn't have ordered the sandwich again if I had known. They offer coffee, but be warned, they make it very strong (with visible dregs at the bottom). When I ordered coffee the first time, I was informed that they would need to make some more. That wouldn't have bothered me if I hadn't seen one of the employees pour out the last of the coffee into his own mug 3 minutes previous. He then preceded to grab a cookie and eat it in front of the line of customers. They forgot that I had ordered coffee so I had to go back up to the register and remind them. When I ordered my sandwich (both times), the cashier never informed me, nor did the menu, that chips are included in the price of a lunch item. When my sandwich was delivered the first time, the man who delivered it did let me know, but the second time, no one told me. All that goes to say that the service is inconsistent and a bit confusing. read more

Great orange and crimson sandwich (chipotle pimento cheese) , egg salad sandwich. and my new favorite the Alabama Bird (the lemon aoili ) they put on it is a little tangy and really sets of all of the flavors and their bread - enough said. All of their cakes are wonderful, and they made me a delicious pecan tart for Thanksgiving! I want to try other things on the lunch menu, but love the ones I have tried so far, I just can't imagine their could be anything better. Heck yes! These folks know their way around some bread. This is mainly a bread and pastries bakery - as of now I don't imagine cupcakes and brownies are gonna be on the menu. They do have several tables to sit down at, and they offer coffee and tea. The pastry case is modest, but everything in it is equally tantalizing! So far I've tried the cinnamon bun, which was simple and delicious, and the ham and cheese croissant. They actually use proscuitto, a huge plus for this charcuterie fan, and a sharp white cheese. The outside in flaky while the inside is tender. Could have used a second or two in the microwave, but I won't fault them for that! My dude got a cream cheese danish and he said it was fantastic as well. The coffee is decent, though I might be a little preferential toward Octane's vanilla lattes. Supposedly they are extending their hours in the future - I'm hopeful that this means some soup and sandwiches offerings! So let me tell you about this place. If you have bread needs, you need to get yourself here. They have a lovely selection of hearty and fancy breads. They make lovely coffee, pastries, and even fresh juices. They also have some pizza and sandwiches as well as a homemade soup of the day. The only reason I am giving this place 4/5 stars is because unfortunately twice I have received undercooked pastries. First the monkey bread and then a ham and cheese croissant. There is literal raw dough in the middle. Now I have received some perfectly cooked ones as well so I don't want to slander them too much. All in all its a lovely place and well worth a visit. I've been eating their excellent croissants Saturdays at Pepper Place Market and it's good to see them inside, presenting a wider range of breads. They've just opened so I expect more of them soon. The sourdough is good, the croissants remain wonderful, and I do prefer the ham and cheese, good cheese and proscuitto are hard to beat. Their cinnamon rolls are perfect, to my taste at least. We bought a loaf of wheat bread today and it's good solid bread. They also have baguettes, multi-grain and rye bread, and several other types of pastries. There's parking off the alley in the rear with an entrance off the parking, good to know since the new VA clinic is still under construction and has fouled up most of the parking on that strip of seventh avenue. Breadworks is serving lunch 11:00 - 2:00. The menu varies daily, so check the website/facebook page for the current menu. Generally there are two soups, 2 sandwiches, two pizza by the slice. Each of these will be one with meat, one vegie, and there is always a good salad to be had. read more

Was happy to see a local bread business to move into Birmingham and was excited for lunch today but left in deep disappointment. For $11 I got two slices of bread, a piece of ham, a small side salad of greens tossed in vinaigrette, and a bag of Lays chips (which at a bakery I would home you could make your own but besides the point). I left very hungry. Never got a drink because I was never asked if I'd like one. Which leads to my second point. The service was super weak. With enough staff that could run a Waffle House, I expected a tiny bit of service. Thanks for bringing my plate and walking right past the silverware and napkins I need... Oh I do get a bag of chips.... I guess I'll get up and walk across the room for the forth time to get them myself. I'll bus my own table and refills. For $11 I could of had the exact same meal with 5 star table service at Chez Fonfon. I'm not kidding, see for your self --Croque Madame - French for "ham AND cheese" - 11.50. My final point. I would have liked to purchase some bread, your signature product. But after paying $11 for lunch and terrible service, forget about it. You should be giving lunch practically away for free and hope people buy the bread. Instead you rob the customer on lunch discouraging them to never come back again. I had hopes of buying more bread locally but for now I guess I'll stick with the store bought brand. I really hate to be that guy but I feel like it's the truth. This is what happens when you leave your customer hungry and with no money. I do realize this is a new business and may have some quirks to work out. I adore this place and often walk from the office for lunch. Co-workers love it too because I always return with amazing sweets to share. Just last week I had a slice of their hummingbird cake. Heavenly! The only thing I wish they had was a great cup of espresso to go with the baked treats. I also ADORE the space there.
