Went here for lunch because I craved sushi SO BAD. They have quite an extensive menu and being an indecisive person that I am (esp when it comes to food because I want to try everything except my wallet and stomach won't allow), it took me a while to figure out what I want. Finally decided to fo with Chef Special Roll (spicy tuna, avocado, and tempura topped with escolar and flying fish roe) and Salmon Lover Roll (fresh salmon, scallion, tempura crunch, cucumber, toped with fresh salmon) with agedashi tofu on the side. The agedashi tofu came out different than expected because the agedashi tofu I know is silken tofu coated with stickier potato starch batter, fried, and served in the sauce. This is like cubed salt & pepper fried tofu with sauce on the side, but I still enjoyed it. Sushi portion are decent and I happily enjoyed my lunch. We absolutely love this sushi spot! So much so that it has become a staple in our weekly routine. We just moved to the area from California in the last year so we had some pretty high standards when it came to looking for a place to get our sushi fix. The sushi here is always incredibly fresh and they have some of the most delicious tuna we have ever had. The staff is always beyond friendly and respectful and the owner Mikey is simply the best! He and his wife always make us feel at home when we come in. The restaurant is hidden behind the imagine theatre in downtown Birmingham and doesn't offer much for parking but being familiar with the area I understand this isn't the restaurant's issue. I believe they would do well if the had a better location though. The restaurant was clean and the menu choices were plenty so I was impressed. The kitchen was open to the restaurant so it was a treat watching them make our food. Fresh sushi and a bowl of there spicy tofu soup hit the spot. Prices are really reasonable and the staff all had big smiles on there faces which made the place warm and inviting. Great design in the traditional sushi restaurant theme. The specials and menu favorites were discussed with us by our server and she sat with us and taught a proper sushi education from how to mix the sauces to how to use the chop stix. Posh without being pretentious is a good way to describe the decor of this newish addition to Hamilton Row. The artwork is pretty and the wood beams and hanging paper lanterns gives this place a cozy feel. The booths are somewhat private too. The food is fantastic. This may not be the cheapest place to get your sushi fix, but the food here is very fresh. We started with a seafood pancake ($7.00) for an appetizer. It was much like okonomiyaki, a Korean pancake, but with shrimp, scallops and mussels. It was delicious. It was about the size of a salad plate so it made for a great starter for two. The mixed greens house salad had a slightly spicy ginger dressing. The shrimp and veggies tempura was attractively presented and the tempura batter was perfectly crisp. My meal, the Salmon on the Fire maki roll was very flavorful and had a bit of a bite to it. I don't recall all the fillings, but it had cream cheese, crabmeat, avocado, asparagus, a spicy mayo and was topped with a thin slice of salmon. It was then topped with panko bread crumbs and baked. Not the cheapest maki at $13.00, but worth the indulgence. Some of their entrees are as high as $37.00 for Kobe Beef or $24 for Chilean Sea Bass. However, you can stop by after a movie at the Palladium and partake in an Avocado roll for only $3.50 and a mug (no little cups here) of Stash green tea ($1.50). They have over 50 maki rolls to choose from. I wish this place well. The service was pleasant and quick. It is right around the corner from the big parking garage behind the movie place and with two hours of free parking you can take your time to savor some of the freshest sushi in town. read more

Busy and fairly full and very short staffed, not surprised considering it is Christmas today. At least it was opened despite many other restaurants being closed today. This place has kept me from going hungry many Christmas eves and many Christmas days over the years. Was complicated with tensions rising as people coming from the rear entrance were being seated before the folks waiting from the front door. Was seated and took a minute or so to get our menu and 9 minutes to get in our order after finally asking a waitress if she could take the couple seated next to us and then ours before the 7 top table. The male waiter took the couples order and then ours. We ordered miso soup, 2 ginger salad, edamame, 2 Cali rolls with cream cheese and green onion added and chicken bibimbap. 6 minutes later and we have our soup and our salads, not bad. The Cali special rolls with the add-in cream cheese and green onions took the hunger edge off for us and despite Sichuan Chinese being our initial intended meal, we were both satiated by our meals here tonight. I always tend to like the korean owned sushi/korean restaurants for more options. The service didn't end up being too bad despite there only being 2 wait staff here to serve us and the sushi chefs and kitchen staff did well to keep up with the food demands. I even saw a sushi chef help out and run food out to tables. Kudos to the staff and going the extra mile to help each other out. read more

Fire cracker is the only one has shrimp tempura in the roll. We also ordered California and salmon avocado sushi, but the sushi rice of the California rolls is not so chewy. We finished with Mochi ice cream. I don't like my green tea mochi ice cream. I cannot taste the green tea flavor. Overall I'm amazed by the baked special sushi. I got a tempura broccoli and carrot roll (forgot the name) it's pretty good but the breading takes up a lot of the roll. The chicken teriyaki roll was pretty good however I felt the teriyaki drizzle needed to be heavier or maybe and extra side would have been appreciated, the roll felt a little dry and dipping in the soy made it kind of salty. The kind crab roll was good to me as well needed a little bit of spicy with it though and we weren't given any wasabi it only came with ginger. This place is definitely nothing to rave about. Service: there was no greeting. Right when I sat down, I wasn't given a menu. They just came to me and said "what you want to order?" When we had told them that we just sat (no beverages served yet) and we had no menus, they left and grabbed some. No apologies. That service was the same throughout the entire time we were there. Food: not bad. I'd prefer to go to Kazoku in Troy or Mon Jin Lau. There was nothing special about this place. But the thing that really turned me off was the chef. The chef went to seat people (wearing gloves) and came back and kept working on the rest of the order. After touching menus, tables and chairs I was a little turned off by that. The prettiest and tastiest sushi I've ever had. Varied food selection if you're not into sushi, but I highly recommend trying as many rolls as possible. Aside from the sushi, the service was glaringly lackluster. Our server rarely came by and never took our empty plates. There's an odd "one drink per customer" warning on the menu. Also, the wine comes in those little onesie bottles you can buy at Kroger for cheap. I don't recommend this spot for drinks at all. For sushi fans, FYI - it is made with fresh ingredients that are incredibly tasty. The price is unbelievable cheap, a true bargain for the quantity and quality of food you are getting. My favorite is the BEEF HOT STONE BIM BOP!!! Bim bop is sautéed meat, vegetables served on a bed of rice and topped with a fried egg. This dish is a must have. I look forward to devouring another Bim Bop soon :) The staff are friendly and efficient. We tried a carryout order from Birmingham Sushi Cafe a couple weeks ago and it was a mediocre experience. We ordered a dragon roll, a good veggie roll, a spicy tuna roll, and an asparagus roll. The ingredients in the dragon roll tasted old and it had a texture like it was warmed up in a microwave. The rest of the rolls were okay-we liked the good veggie roll and the spicy tuna roll. I've been eating at Birmingham Sushi Cafe since it opened a number of years ago, while not my favorite place for sushi, it was the best Birmingham had to offer. Now with new ownership there is definitely a higher quality being set and great new sushi options they are starting to roll out. I was told the menu will be going through an overhaul which I'm really excited about. The head chef who was originally at Shiro in Novi (my favorite place for sushi in Michigan) has made the move over here to bring the flavors I originally fell in love with dining at Shiro.
